For years this project its been around my head, specially when i haven't seen any like it. now turns out i do have time and some space, but above all most of my pieces together. Little by little ill be working on it, and trying to do as "realistic" as possible, this may be hard when the real motte and bailey models i found are just and idea. ill be posting pictures of almost every building and its variations, just trying to get a more accurate and practical idea.
this kind of fortifications was used during medieval times, and where used widely in norther europe, with its variants but with the same idea, a keep in a hill surrounded by a paladize and a ditch, the lower part, with all the quarters, also surrounden by a paladize and a ditch. its is say that was the secret weapon that help william the conqueror took over the channel and build an empire in england... this contructions usually was build in a few days, a castle build of wood. sometimes only the gate and the lower part of some buildings where made of stone.
here some examples...
-
back, im intending to use the old fort walls and the steck houses, the zoo conectors to attach the fort to the steck...
Im starting with the gate... double heigh, with the western fort wood gate, but with a kind of gate house but where it can be defended, now windows or no windows?? ideas so far:
1: no windows, plain wall with a open top to defend the gate
2: windows, open on top to defend the gate.
3: windows and roof, kind of gatehouse seen in some fortifications...
-
The keep:
this part its been really hard and keeps me busy, with different ideas and solutions... but lets break it down...
1:its the residence of the noble.
2:has to be made of plain steck house wall
3:dimensions... my ideal should be of 4x4 steck or 2x2 house wall, by triple heigh but when it comes down to size it comes to big... so decided to make it only 1x1x3
base, i dont know if should be stone, 'cos will change the idea of wooden fortification, or the 7400 bridge pieces as a base. or the western house wall as a base...
here what i have so far...

...
the last one its my favorite one.

Love it... I have 3 old forts that I keep around just to throw up a wooden palisade wall from time to time... for interior buildings I usually use the cabins and horse sheds. ;D

Oh, this looks like it's going to be an awesome project! Can't wait to see it progress!

Awesome work!!!I recall several of our members discussing about the prospect of creating a motte and bailey castle a couple of years ago... Your project brings that discussion to fruition!!! :wow: :wow: :wow:

Your project is very interesting. :)9 :)9 :)9
I can't wait to see more. ;)

the two towers,
im between deciding for one or the other:
-
They both look great, but I do like the first one a bit more.
-
I like the second one better, but it may look better without the smaller part on top. Especially the slanted roof looks a bit odd to me.
-
I like the last one better, but without the upper structure. It's a pity PM doesn't make Norman's long shield, a few knight with those and full body chainmail would fit perfectly in such a castle. A.
-
Some of the viking shields might work for it, along with the cone shaped helmets. Some of the 90's soldiers might be suiteable to use as knights.
-
What a great project. The motte and bailey was an interesting castle design that you seem to capture quite well with your tests.
After seeing your buildings it brings up the thought that Geobra needs to re-release the western stecks and steck building foundations more than ever ;D To me they are even more versitile than steck castle pieces in regards to how and who can use them.

Very cool project! It looks great. :)9

I really like the motte and bailey idea. Great job!

This too is something I have long coveted...
Maybe after I see how you make it I can start my own.
Absolutely incredible so far! :wow:
I like the first choice.

new idea!
I love it!
I would definitely use this!

Nice new design, Amd! ;)
-
Love it too! Did you try with a brick and mortar base? Will you have enough wooden walls for the fence??

I've always wanted a Playmobil motte and bailey, but never bothered to try making one, as I couldn't think of a satisfactory way to create one. Considering what you have to work with, I think you're on the right track and some of your ideas look good. Please continue to update us on how it's coming and your newest ideas.
I hope that for the next generation of the Knight theme, Playmobil will create a Norman theme, perhaps with both a motte and bailey and a Norman keep. This would be a nice change from what they usually do with the Knight theme.
