Victorian Summertime Vacations
-------A play in 4 acts, by tonguello------
Act one
The almost perfect plan
(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/Victorian%20Summertime%20Vacations/1.jpg)
That would be all then. Please go and talk to Robert and Mathew about my plans, they would need to get ready for the road, check the engines and tires and all that. I will talk to Mrs. Tuttle myself.
-Mr Perkins, is everything understood?
-Yes Ma’am
(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/Victorian%20Summertime%20Vacations/4.jpg)
-Now…I need you to take this message to my daughters at once. Read it aloud and don’t wait for an answer. I already know what they will say…. and I couldn’t care less about it.
-Right away Ma’am
-Mr. Perkins, you may take the town car, Mathew is already waiting.
-Of course Ma’am.
As Mr Perkins leaves, Mrs. Van der Hess continues with the writting of her journal.
A minute later Lucy enters the room.
-Excuse me. Did you call for me Ma’am?
-Yes Lucy. I need you to arrange everything for a short vacation.
-Yes, of course Ma’am. Would you be going to the Countryside for the weekend?
-No dear. The whole family will go to the beach house for a week.
Lucy’s heart skipped more than one bit. As the blood seemed to run out of her face Mrs. Van der Hess asked her.
-Are you all right Lucy? You seem a little… erhmm… pale…
-Yes I'm all right Ma’am, sorry. Who of us will be serving Ma’am? ... If I may ask – She added.
-You are pretty new in this house Lucy but you should know the beach house has its own staff.
-Yes Ma’am. I’m sorry.
-Oh never mind dear-. The Countess said in an understanding sort of tone. -The house is very well prepared for our arrival at any time of the year. The staff already knows we are going. I will only take Mr. Perkins, Robert and Mathew; and of course Mrs. Tuttle for my personal attention. You see? ... It’s been a long time since the whole family took a vacation together, so I want this to be perfect. We will take strictly the necessary. We leave tomorrow at dawn. You better go start packing my dear.
Mrs. Van der Hess was to continue to her writing when she noticed that Lucy was not leaving. Lucy stood there, blinking uncontrollably and looking bewildered, her upper lip frozen in a weird jest; as if her brain was trying to solve an impossible mathematical theorem.
Oh dear you know me! I mean we’ll be taking EVERYTHING!!! GO START PACKING AT ONCE!
Lucy’s mind was a mess. She went from ”her heart skipping a bit” to “her feet skipping several stair steps”, so to get the quickest to the kitchen where the rest of the personal was working, already suspecting that something out of the ordinary was going on, but ignoring completely the hard work of the next few hectic hours preparing the Countess's departure and the near-future-happy-days that would follow after!
Once more Mrs. Van der Hess was about to resume her work when something caught her attention.
She heard the town car’s motor running and watched from the window as Mathew and Mr Perkins left. She felt suddenly unnerved.
She couldn’t say what was wrong but she felt something was. It felt as if she had forgotten something...or that something was not clear enough.
When she was leaving the window to go back to her desk, she suddenly realised her mistake. ”She hadn’t been clear enough”, that was IT!
She run and burst opened the window and with half her body out of it, hanging two stories above the ground, she witnessed the car disappear beyond the gates.
She called out for Mr. Perkins and Mathew but, though her desperate cry knocked over a couple of songbirds from the nearest tree, it never reached the men’s ears. Could these vacations have started THIS bad? She thought, frozen on the windowsill.
At that time she couldn’t possibly imagine how much worse those vacations were going to become.
A while later…
(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/Victorian%20Summertime%20Vacations/24.jpg)
-I can’t believe this crazy woman.
-As if I hadn’t enough with what the cat drags in!
End of act one
-
 Can't wait to see more. Very well photographed. Loved the birds on the balcony.
-
Ah, this is beautiful Gaston!! Great pics!!! I wonder what the countess forgot...
Can't recall if the wallpaper pattern is original... :lens: But I think its not, is it?
-
Thank you guys!
What she "forgot" is a mystery that will be solved in chapter.....well... that's a mastery too ;) ;) ;)
The wallpaper is a custom. I tried several things but all the patterns were too big, (there're no doll house stores around here) until I found this paper at a shop specialized in stationary and such.
-
Ooooh, a new story with the Countess van der Hess!
I love this Lady!
Can´t wait to read more! :D
Daniela
-
Oh excellent, I've been waiting for a new Victorian story.
Just taking the absolutely necessary - only 4 servants! :D

Thanks a lot Tim a dear Daniela!!!
-
Excellent story, Gaston! It's like seeing a movie, only with Klicky's ! I look forward to seeing the next chapter!
-
Thanks a lot Bill! That's quite a compliment!

Act 2
The postman sometimes rings thrice
(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/Victorian%20Summertime%20Vacations/segundo%20acto/1.jpg)
-Here’s our first stop. Keep the motor running Mathew, it won’t take long.
DING DONG!
- Bonjour Monsieur Perkins.
-Bonjour Charlotte. We came looking for Lady Rosedale, is she home?
-Oh no Monsieur. She’s at ze park right now. She went for a stroll.-The maid said with a strong French accent
-What park is it Charlotte? I have an urgent message from Lady Kristine.
-The Rosedale Park Monsieur, of course.
- I’ll try t find her there, it’s very important. Merci Charlotte.
-De rien Monsieur Perkins, au revoir.
A few minutes later Mr. Perkins found Lady Rosedale at Rosedale’s Park.
-Good morning Milady.
-Oh Perkins!! Good morning… What are you doing here? What is the matter? Is something wrong?
-Oh! No Milady, nothing wrong. I must give you a message from your Mother.
-It must be very important if you had to find me here. All right, where is that message? Give it to me.
-I must read it to you Ma’am.
-OK! Read it then.
He opened the envelope and cleared his voice. Then he read aloud.
“I have decided to take my family on vacations for a week to the beach house. Your luggage must be sent today to Robert Robertson at Hessenhall Manor for its managing. Be tomorrow morning, 7 o’clock, at Hessenahll’s south gate. None of this is optional. With love; Mommy. PS: NO HUSBANDS. ”
Lady Rosedale didn’t hear a thing after the words “none of this is optional”, just because she wasn’t there. Mr. Perkins never knew what happened but he found he was on the floor, message in hand, and Lady Rosedale’s new maid glued in her spot, mouth opened trying to figure out what has just happened and not knowing what to do.
Finally he said.
-That did not go well I think.
-You think? – was her only replay before she went running after her employer muttering the mantra “I love my job, I love my job”
----------------------------------
Back in the car Mr. Perkins told Mathew everything that had happened.
-Oooh! Mr. Perkins you’ll be in trouble! It seems that the “P.S.” was the most important part of the message. And she missed it! – He said amused.
-Thank you very much for your kind analysis of the situation Mathew, you should be writing books about politics, not driving cars!
-Don’t be mean Mr. Perkins. It can’t be that bad.
-Anyway, forget it. We are entering Houdon’s State. This one is bigger than the Countess’s. The Houdons are richer in fact, so you might say Lady Houdon is richer than her own mother… unfortunately you would be wrong. Lord Houdon is the cheapest man on earth and when they got married they signed a kind of contract in which it is written than she can make use of his money only when he dies. And she won’t have a penny from his mother until Mrs. Van der Hess is in her grave … and very well dead! So she is extremely rich in theory but penny-less really. Do you get the irony in all this Mathew?
-What I get is that it is you who should be writing books Perkins.
-Look! There is Mr. Pot. He is the only gardener and game keeper in this huge place. Stop for a minute would you?
-Hello Mr. Pot. Good morning, how are you doing? - He said from the car.
-Good morning Mr. Perkins. Here you find me… working as always.
-The park grew wild Mr. Pot. You should ask Lord Houdon to get some more help.
-Lord Houdon says I should hire my own help if I want to. – He said sadly. - Are you looking for Your Lordship, Perkins?
-No. It is Your Ladyship the one I’m after. I have an urgent message from her Mother.
-You’ll find her and the East wall, by the pond. She is having a portrait done. Follow that road and turn right at the fork. You’ll find her there.
-Thank you Mr. Pot. Have a good day!
-Goodbye Mr. Perkins! – I hope you fall in the pond and drown before you come back to talk about my work again – He said not loud enough for them to hear.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
A moment later they got to the pond at the East wall and found Lady Houdon posing with her dog.
-Excuse me Milady, but I have an urgent message from your Mother.
-No, no! She can’t talk nor move. Please go away and don’t disturb us. The light will soon change and my portrait will be ruined. – The painter said in a cocky way with a foreign weird accent.
-Ma’am you don’t need to move. Just to listen. I am very sorry to disturb but I must follow your mother’s orders.
At those words she turned her head around, and a scream from behind her that sounded too much like a curse in a weird language, made the water surface ripple and a couple of ducks take fly.
With Lady Houdon’s attention, Mr. Perkins read:
“I have decided to take my family on vacations for a week to the beach house. Your luggage must be sent today to Robert Robertson at Hessenhall Manor for its managing. Be tomorrow morning, 7 o’clock, at Hessenahll’s south gate. None of this is optional. With….”
Again his reading was interrupted by a force that almost threw him into the pond, butt first. This time he shouted watching her run “P.S.: NO HUSBANDS”!!! , trying to make the words get her but it was too late.
He looked at the painter looking back at him with the ultimate look of loathing in his eyes, his hands squeezing the tubes of paint, the brush broken in half. When Perkins finally found his words he started walking backwards and he said:
-At least the dog is standing still. Is it trained?
-No. It is stuffed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again at the car Mr. Perkins told all to Mathew, who didn’t lift his spirit this time either with his situational analysis.
-You’ll come with me this time.
-Where are we going now?
-We have one more place to go.
An hour later after getting lost a couple of times they finally got to their destination.
-Are you sure it is here? It looks so…. small! – Mathew wondered.
-Yes it is here. Come, let’s get this over with.
DING DONG!
A coloured man in colourful clothes opened the door.
-Hey! What’s up bro? – He said.
-Ehmm, Hello, thank you. “Wasupbro” to you too!
The man stood still staring at them.
-Is Your Ladyship home? I have an urgent message from her Mother.
-O’course man. She’s at swimming pool at back yard. Come on in you!
Both men entered the house a little scared. If this was not 1919 they would have hold their hands but social convention determined it was not allowed, nor convenient to do so in the presence of other … people.
When they reached the back yard they could not believe what they saw.
-Miss Mary, two men to see you with letter from your Mommy.
-What a delightful surprise! Come Ule, help me get my towel.
Not until she was wrapped in her towel Mr. Perkins dared to speak.
-It is a pleasure to meet you Miss Mary. I’m Mr. Perkins and he is Mathew Holly, we work for Lady Van der Hess.
-All right. Hello.
She just stared at them waiting for the news.
Confused Mr. Perkins said. - You have a … lovely home Miss Mary. Allow me to tell you that that sculpture is fantastic! Exquisite! Is it a Rodin by any chance?
-This one right here? Oh no! He is not Rodin, he is Panos! You are so funny Perkins! And he is not a statue he’s my bodyguard, from Greece.
-Grrrrrr.
-Oh… O… K. I bring words from your mother. - He said changing the subject.
As he started reading the message, Mathew whispered in his ear.
-Is that the bathroom tub… what she uses as a swimming pool? And that “bodyguard” is in a rusty suit of armour? Do you know what I think Mr. Perkins? I think it is both of us who should writing books… about this.
End of act 2.

Act 3
The chairs game
Several hours of hard work and labour were getting close to their end when the last pieces of luggage were being brought to the truck for loading. Mr. Perkins was giving instructions and running from one place to the next checking and double-checking every single little detail while everyone else was doing their own chores.

Apart from the few mishaps from the day before, everything was going according to plan. Well…almost everything.
-Mr Perkins is all all-right and ready to go?
-It seems so Ma’am. We are just expecting the arrival of the rest of the family.
-Good. I’ll go in the car with Math…
(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/Victorian%20Summertime%20Vacations/capitulo%203/17.jpg)
-Hey K!- Lily shouted from the stone steps interrupting her grandmother.
-Don’t call me like that, Lillian! - She answered annoyed. -You know I don’t like it. - She added frowning.
-OK OK! Good morning Grandma! – Lily said with resignation.
-Good morning dear. How are you?
-I’m fine, Grandma, and very excited. Mom is a little stressed out though.
-Oh! It looks like you are ready! - She said changing the subject and giving a look of surprise to the truck with the luggage. –You didn’t forget anything, did you? Maybe the bathroom tiles…or the pond? -She asked in a sarcastic tone and rolling up her eyes to show her disapproval while asking a silent question to the Heavens above; “when did she go this coo-coo?” – Grandma, haven’t you heard of travelling light?
-Don’t be silly dear, of course I have heard of that! That’s exactly why I am not taking the tiles nor the pond.
Lily rolled up her eyes once more, this time her silent question was “are you kidding me?”
-If everything is ready the truck can leave Perkins. Make sure Robert gets to Villa Alina before the rest of us do.
-Yes Ma’am
Robert got in the truck and started driving away. Mr. Perkins signalled him and showed him the way out of the gates.

- I’m now only missing my own daughters- Mrs. Van der Hess said to no one in particular. -If they keep me waiting I’ll send them at the back of the truck like a common piece of luggage and … Oh! Here they are! My sweet ones!
-Good morning mother- They said together.
-Good AFTERNOON you might say. You are unfashionably late!
-I am sorry mother- Said Lady Caroline. -But I couldn’t make Constance pick up her outfit any faster. Thank goodness the men had already left!
-What ARE you wearing dearest? Where do you think we are going? – She asked Constance in the most condescending way.
-I wanted to look good to ride with you in the car Grandma. So people who sees me passing by, would want to wave goodbye and envy me! – She said dreamily. - I just can’t wait!
-Well dear you’ll have to … wait, WHAT?? What do you mean the men had already left Caroline? Where did they go?
-To the beach house of course.
-But they were not invited! I made that very clear in my note! WHERE IS PERKINS? – He was standing next to the maids but she was so blindly mad at him that he must have looked like a flowerpot to her. He did nothing to change that, and pretended to be a rosebush.
-This was going to be a Ladies-Only Vacation. – Mrs Van der Hess continued. -Why wasn’t I informed? Who invited them without my consent? Oh I am about to faint. Please someone grab me!!
Mr. Perkins appeared out of nowhere holding a chair and put it right under the Countess the instant she began to fall.
-Are you all right Ma’am?
-I would be better if you had chosen a more cushioned chair Perkins! I will deal with you later!
-Oh mother! Don’t be so dramatic! You invited the family, didn’t you?
-Dramatic? Dram…how can you say that to me? And to my face?!! You have stabbed a dagger right through my heart dearest Marianne. Dramatic! What a nerve! Realistic you must say!! I meant to invite MY family. That means my daughters and their children. The men are YOUR burden, not MINE.
-What about Geoffrey? He is your grandson too. – Constance pointed out.
-Yes… but he is a man already, and quite hairy, smelly and disgusting just like his father. Anyway…how did they go?
-They took Geoffrey’s new sports car.
- You let my poor sweet baby Geoffrey go with those APES in his new car? And Geoffrey was driving? Oh dear Lord! I swear: if Mr. Perkins had a more cushioned chair I would faint again. -She said watching Perkins with disapproval.
-Oh Grandma… Come on! Breath…we will all have fun! And the men can stay at the guest house.-Lily said.
-Come on Grandma, the car is so splendid that I can’t wait to get in it. -Said Constance excited.
-Well, I am sorry to tell you dear Constance, that for you get in that car, I must be six feet under.
-But…- She started to complain.
-How long will that take? Lily asked humorously.
-Enough girls! … I must say, I should have never encouraged your mothers to teach, you girls, to speak!
The girls looked at each other in an, it’s-not-important-what-we-say-but-what-we-think-of-you, sort of way.
- We must leave now girls. Come on, it is getting late!
-But Ma’am excuse me, we are still waiting for….
-Everyone’s here and that’s it. - She said raising her voice. -We leave now. Mathew will drive me and Mrs. Tuttle in the town car…. And you my dears will have to take the carriage.
-WHAT?!?!?!? Why the carriage? It will take us two days to get there- They all complained at the same time.
-If that’s so, the sooner you get in, the sooner you’ll get there!
-Can we at least use the Official one? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaase!!- Constance begged.
-Oh how did you grow up so snobbish, my dear? -
-You fostered me. - She joked.
-Oh! Constance! Yes, you’ll be driven in the Official one … but only with two horses … four would be just showing off…too much. She added. -Ta ta! See you later.
“See you later? All we must do to be in her WILL” They thought while they look in disbelief how she got into the car so carefree. Their faces turned into grimaces of disdain and resent, ignoring that eighteen hours later those feelings would go further south to turn into “pain and sore”.
As the last maids standing by the stairs run to the main house singing merrily “Now we are free, the old bat left, drink all the Whisky and leave the rest”, Perkins stood looking at the distant cars.
Mournfully he thought: “Wasn’t I supposed to be in one of those?” And then he just began to walk.

Aaaawwww, poor Mr. Perkins! Hilarious, Gaston! I loved her speech about how ridiculous it was to call her dramatic.   It's always the people who do absolutely nothing for themselves who have no concept of traveling light. I'm enjoying this story so much. All the poses are just perfect, everything so lifelike. Keep it up!

thanks Luis, yes please, read everything!
thank you Pynedor. there's no back stories. this is just and independent play, "theater-like".
The only character "playing herself" but still in character is the Countess (Lady Van der Hess).
You can see the beggining of her REAL story in "A Victorian Comeback" in the story-telling board. It will soon be continued.

Act 4
The naked truth
The first 4 days of the summer vacation in Villa Alina were a downpour, followed by 1 extremely windy day and finally on the 6th day the sun came out and the wind gave way to a fresh southern breeze, perfect to go to the beach.
To get into details of what happened during those first few days would take this story to be a 4 hours- long movie instead of a 4 acts-play. All you need to know is that tempers were very bad, moral was very low and murder-planning and death- wishes’ ratings had rose above the roof.
All that changed with a little bit of sun… Or so you’d think.
-I wouldn’t bother picking up wild flowers Susy.
-I thought a flower arrangement would lift everyone’s spirit.
-Well think again! She only likes roses, so you better get some or make them out of paper and paint them, but get her roses! - Mr. Perkins shouted. – I’m so sorry Susy – he said apologetically – All this is starting to get me. I might need a vacation after this week.
-We all will need one Mr. Perkins. This is the worst vacation ever! Don’t you worry. I’ll get some flowers… ROSES! – She corrected herself as soon as she realised her mistake in Mr. Perkins’ killer’s look.
A while later.
-Do you think this is the best spot Mathew?
-No…this does not look right. The sun is in the wrong angle, the crash of the waves is too loud, the clouds over there will bother her and not to mention that is full of sand wherever you look, and it is not far enough from the house!
Mr. Perkins could not believe what he was hearing. Mathew was being serious, and worst than that: he was right.
Mathew took three steps back still studying the surroundings.
-Now here is the perfect spot! Let’s go Perkins, I’ll help you before you have a nervous breakdown.
And so Mr. Perkins, Mathew and Susy started preparing everything for the family’s day at the beach. Of course it was not an easy task. It had to be something fit for a Countess…

-I’m as nervous as the first day I started working for her. They should be here at any moment Susy, get ready. I don’t want anything going wrong. This has been the worst vacation of my life.
-I’m ready Mr. Perkins, and I have made some cold drinks. Alcohol might help them relax a bit. Oh! look, there they are.
-Oh what a glorious day! Mr. Perkins all this looks wonderful!
-Mother! I can’t believe you made poor Mathew and Mr. Perkins erect this huge tent under this burning sun!-said Lady Marianne.
-Who else? Would you have done it dear? – asked the Countess
-Not me, but our husbands and Geoffrey. That would have given them something to do – Marianne answered.
-Oh dearest sister. Do you truly think so? – Said Lady Caroline looking down at her sister. - Well … maybe my husband and Geoff could have. But your husband, I hear, hasn’t been good at “erecting” things, so I hardly think he could had helped putting this one up either .-
(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/Victorian%20Summertime%20Vacations/Acto%204/11-copia.jpg)
-Oh Caroline! Watch your mouth ……! Don’t be impertinent and stop it. We had enough of this for five days incarcerated in that house. I won’t allow anything to ruin this day. Not today. Now sit down, drink and shut up. – Ordered the Countess.
And so was done. But first:
-What? I was talking about tents! – Caroline said trying to bale herself out of it. The look her mother gave her back, told her she did not succeed.
-Take a sit Marianne and have a drink.
-I can’t. I am worried mother. The girls should be here by now.
-Don’t worry dear. There are no dangers around. They said they would change into their beach-wear and then join us here.
-Mr. Perkins, please put on a record. Opera NORMA, if you brought it, would be perfect for the day. I am already getting tired of listening to these two parrots.
-Of course Ma’am – he said, but really thinking “of course I brought it. That one, AND all the rest of the records”
-But Mother, how long can it take them to change clothes? They had 4 maids to help them.
-Well you know how girls are dear. They want to look good wherever they go, and they have many garments and undergarments to put on and tie up and lace and… - She stopped and looked at Caroline with her drink.
Lady Caroline’s eyes were fixed and opened wide as plates.
-Caroline, are you all right? You shouldn’t have drunk under the sun dear. You know how much it affects you. Are you already a bit tipsy? Well go lie down in the shadow and get better. I don’t want you to spoil our day. – Said the Countess going back to her own drink.
Caroline shook her head but still her eyes were fixed on something.
Marianne turned her head in the direction where her sister was looking and she saw it too.
-Oh no!!! – She exclaimed.
Constance and Lily had arrived. They were in their “beach-wear”, as they called it. But it was not quite what their mothers and grandmother have expected.
-Oooooooooooooooh! Dears! What happened!!! You are almost nude! – Said the Countess running to cover them, while Caroline and Marianne were glued with disbelief to their spots.
-I’ll cover your chest dear, don’t worry!
-Oh Granda! – Said Constance. – We are not nude. This is the last call of fashion for beach-wear. They are called swimsuits. Everyone is using them.
-What? So you are looking like this on purpose? O dear Lord! And what do you mean these are swimsuits? These are not suits at all, these are barely clothes!!!! Your chest is showing, your arms too….. AND YOU ARE BAREFOOTED!!!! Horror!!!
-Granda, always being so dramatic.
-Again with the “dramatic” thing? Are you two going to say or do anything? - The Countess asked her daughters while Lily and Constance lay down on the sand under the sun.
-Girls are you mad? What is this … new style you are referring to? It is indecent, outrageous …scandalous. –finally said Marianne.
-Thank you dear for your lovely depiction.-Said the Countess.
- Caroline are you dead or what’s the matter with you? Your daughter is naked on the sand, milky white and slim, a seagull might mistake her for a clam and steal her away…. Do something!!!!!
Still Lady Caroline was petrified in her chair. The girls giggly at all the commotion they have caused stayed on the sun.
-Come on girls please get under the gazebo, a well educated woman can’t lose the delicate whiteness of the skin … and ALL your skin is showing. – expressed the Countess worried.- This is the worst vacation ever! – She mumbled.
Marianne again knew that her sister’s stare was more than alcohol and too much sun exposure, so she turned once more in that direction. Finally she screamed - SEAMEN!!!!
-WHAT??? Asked the Countess confused and outraged.
-SAILORS!!!!- Marianne screamed
(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/Victorian%20Summertime%20Vacations/Acto%204/24-copia.jpg)
A group of sailors were walking towards them, attracted like flies to dead meat.
-Caroline!! React right now!
Caroline took her mother’s order as the breath of life and jumped off her chair crying… - Don’t look directly at them!!!
-Why not? - Asked the girls.
-They will get you pregnant! - Their grandmother answered
(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/Victorian%20Summertime%20Vacations/Acto%204/27-copia.jpg)
The sailors understood pretty well the vicious looks on the grown women’s faces and just walked by, not a word said, nor a stolen glance they dared.
Not more than a few seconds after they passed Caroline’s scream shook everyone to the core, again.
-Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh! The men are also naked!!!
Right after that, a chorus of female “aaaaahh”’s and “ooooh”’s followed. Marianne covered her eyes with her fan and stood still waiting for them to disappear in thin air; Caroline fainted and fell on her chair, her skirt going over her head, Mrs. Van der Hess drop her umbrella and fan screaming “cover yourselves, cover yourselves” a countless number of times, and shaking both arms in the air above her head as if that could make things to happen faster.
-What’s wrong with you? Asked the older man, Sir James Rosedale, Caroline’s husband.
-You are naked! – Answered the still not unconscious women.
-Did you go mad Granda? – Asked Geoffrey. –We are wearing swimsuits!
-You too with that? Those are barely covering you! Everything is showing! And stop pointing at me Geoffrey!!!
-Grandma, don’t be so dramatic!
-I forbid everyone to call me that again! - She said warningly. – Oh! this is the worst vacation ever!
-We are going to some quieter beach, we don’t even want to think about what you will do when we come out of the sea with all our clothes soaking wet and stuck to our bodies. – Said the girls standing up and dusting off the sand from their clothes, ready to leave.
Thanks Goodness the Countess was too distracted by the men outrageousness to hear that. But Lady Marianne did hear them and she said – Oh no ladies! I am going with you! You are going directly to the house to change! Grandma is scandalized by your actions, young ladies!
-But mom/aunt! – Both girls complaint together.
-Grandma is from last century! – Constance added.
-Oh I heard THAT missy! And yes! I AM from last century!!
While all this was happening, Mr. Perkins and Susy run to disentangle Lady Caroline from her own skirt and bring her back to consciousness fanning her and trying to wake her slapping her face, a little bit too strongly at times. Mr. Perkins thought: “These are the best vacations ever!!!!”
Meanwhile the Countess was scolding the men as if they were little kids.
-And get out of my sight until you come back in a real suit, necktie, shiny shoes, spats and all!! – She finished.
The men went apart near the boat they had taken for a little fun and talked among themselves.
-So… I say we tie her up, get her in the boat, leave the boat drift away and hope a shark swallow it whole before she gets to Africa, comes back and hunts us down. How does that sound?
-Great!
-Great!
-Great! We all agree!
As the servants took Lady Caroline to the house for her recovery, Mrs. Van der Hess stayed alone and in peace, with her drink and umbrella as her only companions.
“This must be the worst vacation ever, no doubt” – she thought.
But peace was not to last.
-Oh no! Look at that! – She said aloud to herself. – That dreadful woman. Look at all that make up … and what is she wearing? That’s so ridiculous … ha! ... Wearing that at the beach! But I shouldn’t be surprise, that’s the typical “her”. Oh no! She is coming this way. Maybe if I look the other way she will not recognise me.
-Good morniiiiing! - The strange woman sung from behind the Countess.
-Hello? Good morniiing!! – She tried again, being ignored once more.
Mrs. Van der Hess thought: “How long can I pretend I don’t hear her or that her voice is the sound of the wind blowing through a hollow tree?”
-MOTHER!!!! Didn’t you hear me?
-Oh Mary!! What a lovely surprise my child!!! I didn’t see you… nor heard you! Come sit next to me dear, I have missed you so very much! Oh but you look lovely dear! You look beautiful, right out of a magazine! (“A forensic medicine magazine” she thought) What are you doing here? How did you find us? – She said and then thought: “yes, tell me how the heck you found us”.
-I followed the screams. I figured it would be you and the girls. You’ve always been so dramatic!
Mrs. Van der Hess ignored the comment. Not effortlessly.
Mary started to talk, trying to fill her mother in on everything that has happened since they last saw each other. She was so happy to be conversing with her mother. She was so excited and accelerated, and so joyful; trying to fill a gap of years in a matter of minutes.
Nothing that Mary said made sense to the Countess; not the Jamaican butler, not the pool at the back yard, nor the Greek bodyguard. At first it seemed like a cruel torture of fate that only she had to bear her rambling. At the beginning Mrs. Van der Hess prayed for it to end fast and painlessly.
Then, slowly but truthfully she started to feel the shadow of the certainty that she had missed that daughter of hers. That one, who was different to what she had planned; that one, who defied her on a daily basis; that one, who couldn’t be changed… that one … who…

As Mary talked the Countess smiled and thought: Mary is the one who had been herself no matter what, the one who loves ME and not MY money, the only one who really and honestly wants to be with me… and she is the one I have neglected and left apart for being different, for being herself … and just now I see it. Finally she looked into Mary’s overly made-up eyes and interrupted her saying:
-You know Mary? These have been the most horrible vacations … until now. This, right here, right now is my favourite part.
-Your favourite part of the vacations…mom?
-My favourite part of the last 20 years my child.

And with not more than one smile, the gap was closed.
THE END

Thank you guys! I appreciate it very much!
It was so much fun to do this story and to discover how one idea for a custom led to another idea and then another one and then ended up in this 4 chapter story.
It was very interesting to me how it was developing along the way. Somehow I feel, unconsciously I had it in my head.
Also I must say that the original ending was totally different, but I asked for advice to some friends and we agreed it could be a little bit controversial (though it was was very funny ;D) so I dropped it.
After reading a very moving article I found in a friend's facebook page, I came up with this idea for this ending which I think made a really good difference and goes perfectly with the rest of the story.
Thank you everyone.

I came to read this last chapter again, and probably will do so again in the future.
I just love the way the men are plotting to get rid of their mother-in-law    But I guess it won't be happening... right? :( Too bad :evilplan:

Greek bodyguard? ha ha
thank god women are not like that nowdays :klickywink:
-
omg that last woman is creepy! wouldn't like to run into someone like her on the beach ;D
funny story, Gaston :) and beautiful scenery too - if i'd been there myself i honestly wouldn't have had time to think of making a photo story :o
-
The scenery is gorgeous. It's interesting how sand and waves have no scale. They look perfectly natural in that setting, and you don't notice them being tiny.
Was anyone watching you shoot that story?

Maybe I should make a behind the scenes thread 8-)

A true masterpiece, Gaston :wow: :wow:! It's like watching an old movie from actual Victorian times! The photo story grips are hilarious, & very entertaining for sure! Using the true outdoors for backgrounds was genius, & magnificent touch! You have captured the times when things were changing from old to new very effectively with your custom Klicky's & Klacky's! Well done, well done!

Thanks a lot Bill for your comments!
I think some of you will be amazed knowing WHERE I took the pics!

Great finish to the story Gaston!
I know what you mean about customizing, you set out do do one figure and next thing you know you have 3.

When I saw them at first, I figured it was in a sandbox or just a pile of sand you bought and packed into a little mound.

 It turned out great though! And this way you had more time and such to create the scenes.
