Title: Suggestion for new DS release for trains!
Post by: Knight Train on February 27, 2012, 20:07:50
Having just rebuilt a couple of old train engines, they all are missing some parts.  It would be fantastic if PM could release train packs.   Like 3 of them.  They would contain commonly missing parts for the old engines.

My suggestion would be the 4051 engine part pack.  It would contain the roof, smokestack, tools, controls from inside the cab, the light housing, the horn, the connecting rods and pins, the buffers, and the side stuff that mounts to the boiler.  Charge $20.

Then make a smaller set for the diesel engines - just roof, horn, light housing and tools.  Charge $15.

And lastly a more expensive set that encompasses the 4052 and 4054 engines and coal cars.  Charge $30.

Just the plastics, not the engine rebuild stuff, so it would be parts playmobil has the molds and control over.

Spare parts for the locos are certainly an excellent idea, Knight Train, but I think they need to be smaller.  If I need, say, a funnel for a loco and I'm going to have to pay $20 for a pack with a lot of items I don't need, then I wouldn't buy it as I could just buy what I wanted more cheaply on eBay.  So I say, "Yes" to the idea, but with the parts either individually available or in smaller packs, e.g. funnel and cab roof, tools, interior controls.

I'd go for that too, but small quanities are more of a "direct order parts thing" and they train parts have been discontinued for quite a while.  I'm just trying to see if there's a model where they can re-supply parts that are discontinued.

I think my idea would have the same result - they would supply them through the DS catalogue and not through DS parts.

You can get most of the diesel engine parts at the DS (Germany), cause the set 4085 [look here] (http://www.playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4085&pics=on) is from 2008 (not 4 years after sale).

I got a better idea. Why doesn't playmobil simply re-release all locomotives (under new RC tech). Then all parts will be available. Here is hoping that the western train will make geobra's shortlist for this years DS items!

It would be good if Playmobil did a loco like this:

with suitable rolling stock, passenger and freight.

I would be happy if the Geobra engineers made it easily possible to remove the new RC units and if they or Marklin could provide a replacement engine with track pick-ups. The engine replacements were in the add-ons at one time but didn't LGB make that part and Geobra made the shell?

No, only the rails were made by LGB.

I must disagree about track pickups, too.  Firstly, health and safety rules in Europe would limit sales of these as mains powered train sets are seen as for the 14+ age group.  Whether you agree with this or not, that's the way it is.

Secondly, power through the track is too unreliable, especially if sets are used outdoors (and with the size of G gauge, this is where they tend to be used).  I'm on a forum called gscalecentral and I often read about the problems with bad connections, dirt on the track and stuck switches, which make me very glad that I use batteries and RC.

Yes the safty rules will not allow an electric track toy for that age group but being able to switch it
would keep collectors happy seeing as so many of them like metal tracks

If installed correctly I have not had major problems. My layouts are indoors on level ground though. I play with my trains for hours so switching batteries gets tiresome and with a loaded train they do not last long. Next I want to go all digital with the controls as this gives so much more possibilities.

The nice thing for me is I have both so the RC trains can go on my LGB track layout also

toy trains..... what a deep pit

Yes, but only if cheaper!

Yes, but only if cheaper!

no kidding, I wonder how hard it is to build? If the electrics have to carry through the rotation it would make it more challenging. I have saved an expensive lazy-suzan mechanism for one, that is after I invent the 30 hour day  ;)

More ammo for your RC argument
