» Go to the Avatar Gallery (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/album/thumbnails.php?album=30) (PF Photo Album)
Some time ago I started to collect the avatar figures of this forum. Not all had been easy to obtain: some can be get simply "as is" from an official Playmobil set, others I have to customize, and a third category has been provided kindly from the owner of the avatar himself/herself. So here I want to present what I have so far. Idea of this project was also to show the complete figure, because most times it only can be seen partially. Additionally I want to show all in a homogeneous way, i.e. in the same environment, but with slight difference: the flags. Originally I started to display the flags of the residence, but after a short time I got feedback from different people who preferred other flags than suggested by myself, for reason of different nationality than the country they live in, they are living in more than one country, or just one's self-image w.r.t. the nationality. Anyway, the reasons are different and I decided to leave the choice to everybody himself/herself.
Because the avatar of a member is a very personal item for each of them (that's my point of view), I asked everybody for allowance before I post his or her photo. So if anybody changed his mind afterwards and wants his/her photo to be removed or changed, feel free to contact me via private message and I will remove the photo -- no excuses or explanations for reasons required.
Finally a small remark: there is no special order about the photos and they are posted nearly in random sequence. For some you can assume the order is the point in time I finished a certain figure, rechieved it or some missing parts/accessories/etc. needed for it. In general I started with those members' avatars which are most active on the board and going step by step forward to the other ones. But this is not a strictly rule, because some are easier to realize than others. -- Anyway: as I said, there is no special order about.
I'm a little bit uncertain how to display the photos best. Currently I have chosen the photo album (cf. HERE (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/album/thumbnails.php?album=30); please note that the photos will be displayed even in display mode smaller than the original 400 x 600 pixels, so if you want to see more details, please click on the photo again).
I also can imagine to start a single thread in which I post the photos directly (or even better referencing them via an img-tag so this will save storage on this site). -- What do you think? How would you like them to be displayed?
-
I like the present approach, Jochen. The photos look very smart and show the avatars and the flags off well. I especially like the fact that the figures are not posed square to the camera but are at varying angles; this makes them seem much more lifelike.
-
I agree, they are nicely done. I think the link to the existing gallery is enough. Thanks for sharing htis fun project. :yup:
-
They look GREAT, Jochen !!!
-
This must be the nicest way that I can think of to pay homage to your fellow members.
The idea and the presentation is just terrific, Jochen!
Thank you for all the time and trouble you have taken on this. :)9
Speaking of trouble... *ahem*... will I be in the 'bad books' if I decide to change my avatar in the next month or so? I'm beginning to think it might be nice to become a human klicky again instead of a buck-toothed, tail-twitching beaver. :-[
-
I like the idea very much!
But I guess that some of the Avatars will be hard to reproduce ;).
I wish you all the luck with the project (you're going to need it)
Bogro
PS - you have my approval before hand!! And as for banners - I would like to see the Dutch flag and the new Playmobil logo (pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaase ... )
-
Thank you for all your praise so far :D

No, for sure you wouldn't. :P (To be honest I would appreciate this because then I wouldn't need some helping materials like the boxes to set "you" in scene ;D). I'm really excited what it will be and what you're thinking on.
PS - you have my approval before hand!! And as for banners - I would like to see the Dutch flag and the new Playmobil logo (pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaase ... )
Oh yes, for sure. If you can provide me a larger photo on which I can see more details I can make a try (or if you can send me the complete figure this would be even better ;D). But keep in mind that I have nearly no medieval sets so this might become a difficult task for me searching on eBay for the desired parts (it looks like there are older parts used like the hat and the fur collar). -- Anyway, everybody is invited to participate. Just provide me some photos where I can see details and/or name me the sets from which the figure is made from and I can start (no garantuee given on how long it takes me to complete the figure)
-
I've changed mine especially!
Anyone know how I can make it larger?
-
Anyone know how I can make it larger?
The maximum size for avatars at PF is 80x80 pixels, so it's often difficult to get a clear pic at that size showing the whole body of your figure.
If you want to show a little more detail, you'll probably have to crop it more tightly - perhaps just show him from the waist up, instead of trying to show the whole body?
I'm afraid that means we won't be able to see all of the neat handiwork you performed on your avatar figure, but please feel free to post a new topic with bigger pics so everyone here can get a better look at him. :yup:
I've made a few examples of more tightly cropped avatar pics so you can get an idea of how it looks. :)
-
Thanks for putting the effort into this Jochen! The gallery looks terrific.
-
Hello Jochen
This is a great idea and you have my full support. Here are the pictures of the Nightmare Man that i promised you the other day. This is the very latest version and more than likely the last as i feel really happy with him now. Like i explained to you in the PM he does have a second head which has a minor change to an eye piece for the final stages of the 'story'. The head you see in the pictures is the one you will most likely see on him in the future. Hopefully one day i will be able to reveal a bit about his background and the sinister story that surrounds him ;D.
Kindest Regards Tim :)
-
... If you can provide me a larger photo on which I can see more details I can make a try ...
I've send you a building plan ;D - if there are any parts you need, just let me know. I might have some of them lying around ...

Great! :D
Yes, I need some parts :-[ (I've e-mailed you about)
-
Thanks Sylvia, greatly appreciated!
-
Hello Dan,
could you provide me some bigger close-up photos of your avatar and some instruction how you made it (e.g. color shades, which parts are painted, which are orginal, etc.). I want to include it into my avatar collection and with this into the avatar gallery (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/album/thumbnails.php?album=30) (if you don't mind).
-
Here are two versions of the picture I use. If you want pictures from other angles I have them.
The figure is the Playmo redcoated soldier painted green with red collar and cuffs and with new belts and catridge case added from paper and wood. The boots I cut away and made trouser legs from modelling putty (Milliput). His plume I had to make too because I did not have one in my box
The rifle is the standard Playmo one with about 1/2 a centimetre cut off the barrel (British Army rifles of the time were very short) and the sword bayonet is made from the Playmo rapier cut down.
He's a Private of the British Army's 60th Royal American Regt. of about 1810.
-
Opps!
Two copies of the same shot!
Sorry.
-
For what it's worth here's some more.
Thanks for adding it to the Gallery.
-
Ups :o
This might become difficult because you used quite individual parts (for sure, 'cause you made them by yourself ;D) and -- this is the real reason -- because I'm not good in modelling new parts :-\. So I'll see what I can do, but I hope you don't mind if I can't make it 100% looking the same ... :-[ We will see. I'll make my try and you can judge afterwards.
And I must admit, to do so will take some time.
Anyway, thank you very much for the very nice photos! :D They will be very helpful, especially those from different angles which makes a 360° view and with this gives a good impression of your proper soldier.
Kind regards
Jochen

Hi again Jochen
Just had a thought, if anyone decided to change their Avatar in the future they will have to make two so that they can send you an exact one.
Now with over 80 members that will add up to quite a collection
I think you are going to need a bigger display cabinet
Regards
Craig
-
:)
thank you jochen.
great gallery.
-
Just had a thought, if anyone decided to change their Avatar in the future they will have to make two so that they can send you an exact one.
This would be a perfect solution ;D But for some reason I do not believe this comes true so I still have to rely on my own skills.
Now with over 80 members that will add up to quite a collection
I think you are going to need a bigger display cabinet
Indeed, but some of the members do not have an avatar at all, some are no longer active or had been absent for quite a while (several months), so I'll not include them in the collection. With these considerations I will stay below of 80 avatars and the showcase will last some time (pst, not to mention: right to the one depicted (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=1039.msg12969#msg12969) hangs another one of the same size and nearly empty ;))
-
Because some people asked me to do so, from now I'll post here every update to the gallery.
Clicking on the photo will lead you to the gallery itself.

Beneath the sandals variant (cf. below) another variant for Richard's avatar, suggested by Richard itself ("I wear sandals, or half-boots with white socks" ;D).

You certainly give great attention to detail, Jochen. I think you may find you have a full time job here. :)

My initial variant, but now with the correct sandals size.

Richard, so by now your avatar is ready. Just have to find the time to make an avatar photo (firs and palms) for your usage here at the board, and find a suitable box to send the items undamaged to you.

THANK YOU, JOCHEN ...
I love them both !!! My favourite is the booted variant !!!
However, no one is going to see the half-boots or sandals in an avatar, which is very unfortunate ... :(
Thanks again and all the best,
Richard
-
What an awesome gallery, Jochen. Thanks so much for including my new avatar. It's so awesome that you are so detailed to include the state flags of the member's homelands.
-
thank you jochen.
it turned out a very beautiful gallery.
i just wish i could have a nicer avatar and multiple nationalities to have more flags.
a perfect work.
thank you again.

Hello, Jochen ...
I wonder if we can talk Sylvia into making your beautiful avatar photos into postcards?
I also wonder if we can talk her into making the allowed avatar size bigger, so that everyone can use your graphics? ... ::) ... ;)
All the best,
Richard
-
I wonder if we can talk Sylvia into making your beautiful avatar photos into postcards?
Nice suggestion, but what would be the purpose behind this? Who would be using them? Just those people whose avatars are pictured or everybody? Anyone could save the images to their computer and print them out onto card with their own printers if they really wanted to, I guess. Hmmm.... maybe I will do just that! ;D
I also wonder if we can talk her into making the allowed avatar size bigger, so that everyone can use your graphics? ... ::) ... ;)
Not likely. I already thought long and hard about this when setting up the forum. ;)
I happen to think that avatar pics should be viewed more as an identifying mark, for fast and easy recognition of the post's author, rather than a main feature on a forum page. What people write and the photos they post are more important and I have found (from my experience of using other forums) that overly large avatars can detract from this. That's also why I'm very anti the use of images larger than smilies in the signature area, btw. It's in order to make the forum environment as user-friendly as possible for all members. :)

'Twas just a passing thought (or two), mon cher ... ;)

I agree with you there Richard. A very nice touch. Jochen continues to delight and amaze me as he works his way through the membership.

Queen Candy loves it too! :yup:
I showed her before she headed off for school this morning, and she really was delighted to see this special portrait of her avatar figure.
Thanks, Jochen! :)

When do we get to see what the rest of Sylvia's new avatar looks like?
(Or, have I missed something?) ... ;)

Hi, Richard! :)
The finishing touches are still being made to the figure, so I guess you could say I'm not fully dressed below the neckline. ;)
Should be ready to unveil my complete avatar reasonably soon. ;D

That is a very nice idea. But could someone announce me, what the third flag is for? I don't really understand it.
One flag for the board
One flag for the country of the user
One flag .....? a special flag with a logo of the User?
-
I think three flags are more impressive for presentation than just a single one :)
So I chose one for the board as common element (you recognized it correctly)
One for the country (which the user is affiliated most, i.e. most his/her nationality)
And the third one for the state: e.g. the US consists of several states (Florida, Texas, California, etc.), also like e.g. Germany (Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Hessen, Sachsen, etc.) ... or a flag a user feels also associated him-/herself (e.g. state of birth, European community, candiland :P) ... or in case the members does not prefer another country, just a dummy flag like the one above with the Playmobil logo.
-
Hey Jo , like this initiative
Nice Avatar collection

Wow, Jochen, you've certainly been busy! Five more excellent photos of avatars in the gallery, and a great behind the scenes shot. Great work!
Is that camera a new one by Playmobil or one of your customs, btw?

Wow, Jochen, you've certainly been busy!
Not really. These avatars had been standing around for quite a while, waiting to be set in scene :-[

Thank you for the praise. I'm still a little bit undecided about me new "studio lightning" and the quality of colors in the photos ... :hmm: :-\
Anyway, thank you for the praise :D
Is that camera a new one by Playmobil or one of your customs, btw?
It's the standard camera (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-08-1270) from Playmobil, just given an aluminium case (some paintings), so you can say it's a custom work, if you like. The cable release is also a custom work (30 03 4550 (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-03-4550)), although not that time consuming than the painting itself ;)
I already used this camera in my BBQ photo story (http://jr-x/playmobil/projekte/bbq.php?page=9&lang=en); there it is shown from the front.
-
Thank you for adding me to your collection ;)
and you took the sane version ;)

Thank you for the praise. I'm still a little bit undecided about me new "studio lightning" and the quality of colors in the photos ... :hmm: :-\
It seems to me like the sort of light you get on a cloudy day so the colours are strong but there are no shadows, although macgayver's pic does seem to have a little shadow.

Surely, though, you've made it into a digital camera - isn't that an LCD screen on the back, or is it just the end of the film box to remind you what film you are using?
-
All of the new additions to the gallery look great! :D 8-)
I think your 'mi-chi' looks much better than mine - definitely neater paintwork, that's for sure. ;)
Also lovin' the modern camera with preview screen and cable! Very neat little custom piece! 8-)
-
It seems to me like the sort of light you get on a cloudy day so the colours are strong but there are no shadows, although macgayver's pic does seem to have a little shadow.
Yes, I placed two 10.000 K neon lights above the scenery, so there will be almost now shadow due to the large lightning area. I wonder, if the 10.000 Kelvin is the "wrong" thing. For sure the colors are bright, but somethings disturbs me. Natural light is given with about 6.500 K, so maybe I should look after such a bulb.
Surely, though, you've made it into a digital camera - isn't that an LCD screen on the back, or is it just the end of the film box to remind you what film you are using?
 No, not the end of the film box, it's a display (although it's some digital art, putting Heather avatar pic electronically into the photo).

Excellent digital camera custom there, Jochen. Looks just the job. (I wonder if and when Playmobil will follow your lead?)
