Title: Best Sellers?
Post by: GARY on February 13, 2012, 07:20:11
Hello

Back in July Robbie said he thought the latest circus sets had been a flop. Is this true? How do we know which sets have sold well? Do Playmobil publish figures?

Just a thought.

Best Wishes
Gary

Sorry, the latest circus theme did not do very well in my country. Many sets were left on toy store shelves for a long time. I guess visiting toy stores and seeing how quickly sets are sold is the best way to know which series did well. After a while you get a feeling whic ones will do great, and which wont. Another sign will be if the whole theme is discontinued abruptly and make its way to the DS catalogue sooner than expected...

Playmobil doesn't post sales figures of individual sets or themes so there's no real way of knowing, although some people who claim to have inside information have reported that certain themes have not done well.  I, for one, was surprised to read that the Roman theme did not do well and still have my doubts about this since the Egyptian theme, which is in a similar vein, came out after it and some Roman sets are still available as Add Ons.  I also recall someone claiming that the dinosaur theme did poorly (I thought it would have been very successful) and yet Playmobil is releasing new dinosaur sets, which doesn't really make sense either.  As for the circus theme, these sets seemed to languish on the shelves in my local Toys 'R Us and I recently saw most of the sets on clearance at Tuesday Morning.

The Roman theme and the Dino theme did poorly at Toys R US, but from what I understand performed just fine elsewhere... the Egyptian them initially had good sales at TRU but the second batch of stock that TRU ordered didn't sell well at all... so I think the "sales figures" that indicate a theme did poorly are mostly the TRU figures and also the big indicator of what ends up at second run stores like TJ Maxx and Tuesday Morning.

My toys r us has DOZENS of circus bigtops that have not sold, stacked up on shelves, overflowing into aisles besides the playmobil one. I take that as a bad sign. I don't know why, though. It's such a great set, and they had wonderful displays set up in the center aisles of this theme, with one set up in a showcase and all. I don't know why it didn't sell.

My belief is it is true to real life perceptions about circuses. People don't endorse them in real life as they did in the past, so there isn't a desire to spend money on buying a toy one.

Yes, this is probably true.

Hmmn

Thanks for all that.

The 'animal' circus remains hugely popular in Germany. Perhaps this accounts for why the circus sets are produced - where does Playmobil sell the most? - Germany, I guess.

Personally speaking, I love the circus and the Playmobil circus sets.

Best Wishes

Problem with the circus theme might be that its a one trick pony. You can't really use it for much else than circus performances.

It's beautifull, but it has a far more limited range of play possibilities compared to a house, castle or pirate ship for example.

My gues would be that the firemen theme is not a big seller either, again due to limited possibilities.

Historic themes probably depend on each batch.. Pirates are probably doing well in each batch, might be one of the most popular playmobil themes. I'd gues its outselling the medieval theme in recent years ever since medieval limits itself to just castles and soldiers.

With various ships, islands, rafts, hidden treasures, etc the pirate theme simply seems to have more possibilities these days.
My hopes arent too high for the newest cowboy batch though.. it lacks structures. Might have been good if they skipped the fort for once in favor of something else. Like a ranch, or train.

I'd have to check. When the old TRU was closing, they got down really cheap, like $30. :o
