Title: Discuss the new train set!
Post by: highlandcattle on January 27, 2012, 18:15:21
Finally after all these years a new train model! Yay! In the beginning I thought I looked like a cheap toy but the more pictures I see of it, the more I like it! People say it is small but if you read the dimensions on the website it seems big. Surely these can't be correct: Loc: Length 64 x width12 x Height 15 cm A shame that no extra wagons are for sale. A cool feature is that we finally have sound. I hope these will be realistic! I would have preferred a passenger train after all these years of the very ugly one playmobil had for sale. But I'll surely get this one!

So what are your opinions?

cool, it's double headed?  I think I like it.  Though I wish they'd bring back the old euro steam engine, though it seems they are developing around a modern theme.  Are there PM crane loaders (like in the horizon) too?

Yes, but it is a seperate set.

Surely these can't be correct: Loc: Length 64 x width12 x Height 15 cm
Length of the hole train (I think) are 64 cm, not only the loco.

Here is a link for the catalog 2012 from Playmobil (Anna Ermann). (http://www.klickywelt.de/viewtopic.php?f=85&t=47985) Please use it private and only in (Playmobil) forums!

Here you can see all new items.

For me the loco is too modern. I will make a train layout of 1920-30 (epoch IIa). And for using it digital on brass tracks it is not really suitable.

It kinda grows on you after looking at it for a while. Not my favorite version so far, but something is better than nothing, I just hope PM adds a whole new world of add on cars, & accessories to compliment this new contribution! Thank you for sharing this latest info with us, hlc!

 :lmao:

Sorry, but I really had to laugh when reading, though you surely didn't intend it the way I interpreted it almost automatically  :-[
It's just the shortest PM-train I've seen...

(yeah, the pirates' ships aren't really that big eather, I know I shouldn't laugh)

It is not the shortest train it is as short as the last two cargo trains. ;D

According to the catalog it needs 1 nine volt block and 6 AA batteries. It also clearly states that the loc is 64 cm not the whole train. found two more pictures on facebook.

It looks good to me and is nicely industrial for the cargo theme.

I really like that cargo crane in the picture, too! :)9 Another gotta have! BTW, surely PM will have addon cars for this train, it seems lacking with just an engine & 1 cargo car.

Hmmmmm,.....uses regular batteries?, That may mean the engine isn't strong enough to pull multiple cars, only one instead. :-\

It also clearly states that the loc is 64 cm not the whole train.

That is not possible, it must be the length of the loc with the wagon: a 3940 (US 3286) or 5135 pirates' ship is ca. 64 cm, the loc certainly can't be that long or you couldn't hold it in one hand  ???

According to the catalog it needs 1 nine volt block and 6 AA batteries.

So most likely it will be just as strong as the old R/C Locos.

I've got the battery powered RC locos, Bill, and they use 4 x 1.5 volt batteries and are strong enough to pull multiple wagons and coaches (and I run the rolling stock with the ballast weights fitted).

Here are a couple of links to photos of long trains:

Lovely pics gordon. So we will get at least the same power as the old RC? I don't have any all my trains are LGB models. Maybe the extra two batteries are just for the sound and lights.

I imagine that they're possibly going to be something other than alkaline or nic-cad rechargeables too.

the locomotive is not 64cm length, but about 32cm...on the picture in the first message, you can determine the length with the track as reference....the total length is about 64cm...

I've had only the rechargable battery Playmobil RC trains, how long do the 4 batteries in yours last with long & weighted cars?

No, that can't be!!

The car/wagon is ~30 cm long and the loco can't be twice as long as the wagon!
»Loco length« is a typing error, I think.
It must be: »train length = 64 cm«.

The 4010-loco is longer than this one (it has 4 axles!), but it had also only one (1) wagon/car.
But I think this loco is longer than the 4050-/4024-/4085-Diesel locomotive.

I must admit, Bill, I've never checked this out particularly as I usually run up to three or four wagons or carriages and with that load I can go most of a day at a display with one set of well charged batteries.

those are nice pics, Gordon

I'm not particularly thrilled about this train (i don't love the design and theme it's from, oh not to mention those ugly rc tracks) - I dare to say that if PM plans to re-introduce a train theme this was not the best start, oh well only time will tell....

I'm afraid that the days of Playmobil LGB electric trains are now forever gone. The new RC trains are what most toy manufacturers are going to, like Lego, & others. The retired metal tracks are expensive & take a lot of adult supervision & assistance for set up, connections, maintenance, etc., which the RC models nearly eliminate. I miss the old ones for nostalgic reasons of realism, not practicality.

Very true, Atto! I'm afraid if I get this new set I will be investing in 2 sets of rechargeable batteries with charging systems, but after they go coplewy, they will need to be given into a recycling place to comply with not sending them to landfills :-\.

I am rather new to playmo trains  0)  and just have one 4052 and two 4051 engines with 6 passenger wagons 1st and 2nd class and a full western train with most wagons twice . I hope any future trains can be converted to electrical trains as these are the real trains and sorry to say , personally i cant grow to like battery trains, they are njust not right to me .. i am really pleased a new train is out , these cranes look awesome , but i will stick to my LGB tracks and proper electric trains. of course analogue as i am  a weirdo and I  dont like digital very much

and that in turn will make the current prices of vintage LGB trains seem not so bad

I bought a mint 4051 about 4 months ago for less than 50euros . and it was mind and complete 100% . and has proper mechanics that last if you ask me

Sorry i am taking such a strong view on trains ( reminds me of my hardcore views on steck  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[    ) but with prices for LGB track being reasonable ( used tracks ) and the ebay prices for the old electric trains i really cant see the rational for these locos. i wonder though if its easy enough to replace the battery motor/unit with an old motor. These motors are available on ebay , i boughtx 3 MISB (!!) ones  last year and they cost me round 35 euros each which is not bad for a MISB motor !!!! i wonder if that replacement is possible

With a proper electric train on LGB trucks and digital controls the possibilities are endless and some very complex systems /sets can be set . ANd the LGB tracks look soooo much better than those black plastic ones that look like a chinese monoraul toy if you ask me ( sorry , a rather strong view again ...)

LGB was bought by Marklin some years ago and their new sets are awesome and new tracks with different lenghts and angles etc , really awesome . Its a shame Playmobil moved away from LGB....  ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

I don't understand your attitude ???. Battery trains are super fun. I only use LGB (and piko) track, but I still use battery trains. It is fun that you can really control them individually. Playmobil has been using this track for over 14 years. They are never going to switch back. I do hope they would sell their trains without track, that saves the trouble of selling it. I still think this train looks much better then the 4010/4011 which looked too cartoonish.

You are correct hlc. They are not going to retreat backwards & produce the LGB types anymore. Any strong thoughts & being strongly opinionated is not going to change their minds, so now it's time to move on & critic the newer models.

The R.C. chassis can be replaced by the old 7550 chassis as used in all the older locomotives that picked up power from the track.

I know, but the airvents were stickers making it a very flat and lifeless model. I honestly think that the Taurus is not a good locomotive for a toy model. It is already very smooth and Playmobil made it even more smoother. It just isn't very eye pleasing to me ;). Just a big red blob, I didn't buy one :)
Title: Re: Discuss the new train set!

I'd certainly agree about it's unexciting appearance. I must admit, I call it "the electric brick"!  Mine is more bricklike because it doens't have the vent stickers on; they were missing when I bought it and though I have spare stickers now from DS, I never got round to fitting them.

I think the 4011, ICE, is good though - really attractive.

I think that you can act also with the new locomotive 5258 (to go with transformer), but it looks like, as if the axes of the new locomotive are further apart (the locomotive seem to be longer than the older diesel locomotives).

The axels do look further apart than the old ones.  This has me thinking converting to an old motor block will look strange.

I've been measuring my old locomotives. And they are about 27/28 cm (from coupling to coupling). So this one could be a bit larger. Which is nice, because having every locomotive the same size is a bit silly no?

i have black plastic tracks too :(  I was thinking about spray painting the rails metalic rust or copper color, but then I'll have to go in aftwerwards and hand-paint the "wooden" ties a flat brown wood color, not to mention the rail spikes and clamps... that's a LOT of work for all those feet of track!  heck, that's a lot of work just for ONE piece of track!  :(

The very best in train world??? Big words for a nearly beginner in garden railroading... (http://www.schweinchenforum.de/images/ferkelmodern1024/smilies/schlingel.gif) Do you really know all of it? (http://www.schweinchenforum.de/images/ferkelmodern1024/smilies/watchyou1.gif)

I don't know all, but I think, with grit LGB tracks look even better!

Some of the garden railroaders say »Gardinenstange« (engl. »curtain rails«) to LGB tracks because they are rather ungainly and too high (in comparison to e.g. code 250 tracks).
In addition, there are better to be cleaned (less getting dirty) tracks than brass tracks, as for example high-grade steel tracks of Revalda or Lebu.

(But for me it is too expensive for a Playmobil toy train)

I think also that colored plastic tracks (wood = brown, steel = silver/grey, grit = grey) could look even better than the dark grey ones.

Yes, so you can write it! Your opinion (!) is always OK, also when it is different as mine or those of others.

Now I hear a difference to: »LGB track is [...] the very best there is in train world«. It sounded for me first in such a way, as if there was nothing better than LGB (tracks). In my opinion one cannot write this.

By the time the new set 5258 is available to export markets in 2013, someone will have tried the conversion in Germany and I will know what to do...

I don't think so, because Playmobil makes only modern trains (4010, 4011, 4016) in future, which you can see in reality too (last steam loco was 4017/4019/4021), maybe old items in DS (?)...

My Great Uncle was instrumental in starting this state park showing the logging industry during WWII utilizing the Shay steam Loco's. I remember riding on the rail cars during the summer to the top of the mountain, soot & all :o. It was a breath taking adventure.

I've ridden a train like that too when I was a kid.... I remember how UN fun it was, compared to what I was imagining beforehand, because I didn't realize all that black smoke would be going in my face!  (I was on an open flatbed with rails.....I don't even remember any seats on board...I was standing the whole time).  NOT fun for me!  I rather look at it than ride behind it!

During the switch backs going up the mountain, people had no idea to stay away from the first open flat car because it would really burn coal & the smoke was horrible bellowing around them. Everyone thought the picture would be so good, but the soot got all over their camera lens! ;) Plus the steam whistle was so loud it would nearly deafen you, if too close!
