Title: 5778 Skull Pirate Ship rarity
Post by: Luis on January 20, 2012, 19:23:29
Lately I've been crazy about pirates (I thought it'd be something temporary a few months ago ;D)

I'm particularly thrilled about 5778, which I guess was a US exclusive a few years ago (eventually available in Europe) and not so long discontinued? (please correct me if I'm wrong)

Anyway, I just feel the need to have a freaking pirate ship! (I only own the viking boat and the Schooner - those don't really count within this theme imo)

Is 5778 too hard to get? It's listed on ebay for an extremely high price - is it really that worth these days? 8}

 ???

PS: I used the search engine, but I'm still confused about the current rarity of this set.

Yes this listing is on ebay for a long time now Luis. I guess it is very rare as its almost the only listing of this ship on ebay :( Been checking again and again for it, as mine is not complete, and I was never able to find a good listing. This set apperead in greece for a few months and they never restocked it...

I don't know about the rarity, but blackboards ship is quite close to this one,
And you can get it from Playmobil.
It is black instead of blue, and the sails are all different, but I still quite like the set.

I've never even seen that set before. The colour scheme is interesting...not my cup of tea, though. :(
Anyways, this is the only listing on eBay that I've ever seen for that set, so I'm assuming that it is pretty rare. Good luck finding it!

Thanks everyone for the info.

Oddly I remember seeing this exact ship about 6 months ago for $50 as BIN :wall:

WoT, I have seen the other one but, like PM, I like the color scheme from 5778 best. :-\

are you in Europe, or USA?  If you're in USA, try craigslist.com.  I see them quite often for $20, though they vary in how complete they are.  I have one, but I customized it with the old 3050 sails and better decals.

It's a pity both this ship and the blackbeard ship lack spanker sails in the aft (unlike their 3050 predecessors).  For as much as this thing goes on ebay, you might as well spring for a classic 3050 if you ask me.  Cheaper. And better.

I paid $30 for mine new and it's probably my least favorite ship that I own.

Actually I didn't like the skull ship when I first bought it.  I couldn't reconcile the cheezy decals with the playskool coloured orange masts and poopdeck.  And it bugged me, as I said, that it lacked a spanker sail and real rigging.  And the sails it did have are so plain.

The good thing is that it comes with actual spars/yards that can hold sails, unlike the blackbeard ship which only comes with plastic fake furled sails and no spars whatsoever.  So you can customize it.  It's a good ship to have for the navy blue hull at best.  And the spars.  But the rest can only redeem itself if customized, IMO.  Otherwise just buy the 3050.

I have such a 5778 but I don't like the ship much, awful colours. It looks good on the box, but that's it.  It has some usefull parts though and 2 of the klickies are really nice & unique!
I'd go for a 3286 (EU 3940) ship, Luis, or the new 5135-version. Or if you prefer a 5778-hullshape, a 3750.
