Well guys, if you read the original thread about our ancient travellers, you'll know it's not just what I have in store, but what we all have in store!

Maisie and Fred won't have very many adventures if it's just up to me, but I know Lars, Heather and Sylvia are all joining in, and hopefully others will too.

If anyone wants to contribute to the fun but can't get hold of the 7935 Grandparents accessories set because it's not sold in their country, let me know and I'll see what can be done!

Hello, World Travelers ...

I just saw the "First Installment" of Maisie and Fred's Excellent Adventure (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=2130.0) ...   :)9 (Nice story-line with some great photos!)

They're in Denmark with LHAAP! And, they're lost ...  8} (Too bad Gordon's rescue equipment is so far away.)

Is the intent to make ALL of our comments here and just keep the other thread (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=2130.0) just for Maisie and Fred's travel photos?

This looks like it's going to be a lot of fun! ... :yup:

All the best,
Richard

Great photos, LHAAP! :D

Nice to get a glimpse of your garden. The confused couple in the grass made me laugh. ;D

Hmm... I wonder how puzzled they will become when they start flitting rapidly from one country to another across the globe. :P

I hope they are fit enough for the journey. Fred worries me slightly with the walking stick...  but perhaps he doesn't really need it to rest on? :hmm:  I suspect it has a secret compartment in the handle containing a miniature flask of whisky or rum. ;)

I think that'll be tidier.

I took some shots on our local park on Sunday but haven't uploaded yet.

We're off to Oxford in a couple of weeks and then Wales before the month is out, so I hope to get some good M&F shots then.

Are we assuming that Fred and Maisie have been travelling for some time and so shots in different places can appear at the same time, or is it better to wait for someone running a story to say, "Right, that's it, they are off elsewhere now", which is the signal for the next person to dive in with a post.  (Could be interesting - who will get in first?)

I think the best and funniest (more pictures to enjoy) solution is to upload when you have pictures to upload = don't wait for others to finish their story.

Maybe I'm wrong ???

Reply to "Maisie & Fred hit Oxford UK":
Very interesting tour pictures from Oxford, Maisie, Fred and Martin ;) I'm already looking forward to seeing more pictures from the UK.

Maisie and Fred have reported to me that they are ready for a new tour in Denmark. Maybe they'll go out and take a look on the North Zealand (http://weecheng.com/europe/denmark/zealand/map-sealand.gif) countryside and sights in the coming week.

Update, 20 April 2008: Maisie and Fred didn't reach to make a trip in the North Zealand countryside and a sightseeing in Ølstykke (http://www.bedandbreakfast.dk/minimaps/358/KortOelstykke.jpg), but they'll be ready for a trip next week (hopefully)

Hello. Martin ...

Wonderful, wonderful photos !!!

I love your Oxford Adventure (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=2130.msg23736) with Maisie and Fred !!!

The little Smart Car looks perfect for the world traveling couple ... ;)

And, thank you for the explanation of Maisie's "sighing" ... :)
I always wondered what it meant when Susan (my wife) "sighed" ...

This is a great idea !!!

Looking forward to further adventures.

All the best,
Richard

Martin,

Thank you for your wonderful photos and captions, did you do any performing at the folk festival in Oxford?

I assume 'easy on the wedge' is similar to our 'easy on the pocketbook'?

Thanks for the comments guys!

Gepetto - yes, wedge = folding money. :)

I have never "performed" at the Oxford Folk Festival, though I have played along in music sessions there a few times. Our Morris team are based in Kingston-on-Thames, about 2 hours away by train, so I don't think we'd ever perform here as a team, but I enjoy seeing the other teams, recognising the dances and tunes, and stealing ideas.

Our Morris team starts the season next week "dancing out" in the New Forest, and then we have something most weeks till mid-June when I'm off to Ireland for a fortnight's holiday.

Really enjoyed your tour, Martin!  :D

I've never been to Oxford so it was fun to see it through Fred and Maisie's eyes. 8-)

Maisie's reminiscences of Fred were the high points in the story for me. ;) Very witty! ;D

Nice Pictures, Gordon! Our cat is about as sleepy, but all black.

I'm excited to hear about your Hadrian's Wall Walk - one I hope to do myself someday.

Be sure to take a Roman Legionary or two with you as well. If I was in charge of one of the shops at the various Roman sites along the wall, I'd have a load of Playmobil stocked up, and plenty of DS packs of legionaries too.

Responding to Gordon's Post (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=2130.msg25590#msg25590):

Here are Maisie and Fred making a brief visit to North Yorkshire.  The last photo shows them surveying my planned walking holiday next year from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway along the line of Hadrian's Wall to mark my 65th birthday.  Maisie and Fred will be accompanying me.

Loved the trip to North Yorkshire, Gordon ... Thank you!

And especially love your cat ...

I totally agree with Martin's comment about your proposed trip to Hadrian's Wall.

Hello Martin and Richard,

Our cat is now 14 and this year he's begun to show he can't take the nights out!  Today, he came in about 0700 and, after a bit of socialising and breakfast, was asleep by 0800, getting up at 1500.  He then had a couple of hours out and has been in now for about 90 minutes asleep.  His record for sleeping is something like 15 hours, not non-stop if I remember rightly as he got up to eat at one point and then went back to bed straightaway, so maybe only 14 and threequarter hours asleep!

I'm doing the Hadrian's Wall Walk using Contours who specialise in walking holidays.  You say what walk you want to do (or get them to create a custom walk for you), and they arrange accommodation so all you have to do is walk (even your luggage is taken on for you).  Diane and I tried them out on our first (and so far with house moving plans only) walking holiday when we walked from Berwick to Warkworth (the Northumberland Coastal Castles Walk) in 2006 and found them very good, as has a friend of ours on a number of holidays.

With my planned walk I'm including a couple of non-walking days at major sites and walking about 14 miles a day.  That doesn't seem a lot in time if you think that the average walking speed is about 4 mph, but on a walk like this you actually average about two to two and a half miles an hour when you take account of stopping to admire the view, take photos, check the map and so on.  I didn't believe this when a friend who has walked in the Himalayas, South America and, this year, South Africa told me this, but she was spot-on!

I had thought of taking the a Roman figure or two as well as Maisie and Fred, and I'm pretty certain I will.   I'm still thinking about whether to make it a sponsored walk (I am an Assessor for Kirkleatham Hall School for severely handicapped children and young adults in Cleveland and also support Gedes School in Kenya which is a similar Kenyan school, so these would be the target for the sponsor money) and also whether to do a blog as I go.  We'll see on both counts nearer the time.

Hello, Gordon ...

Perhaps your cat (at his advanced age) should think seriously about a career change.
He might want to explore the possibilities of "consulting" ...  :klickywink:

Richard

LOL!  I'm not going to put idea into his head as I'd end up doing the work!  As it is, if another cat has been in the garden I am dragged out for a tour with him while he points out every place the other cat has been to!

14 miles a day is quite reasonable. A few years ago I did a lot of long distance walks, Ridgeway, Cotswold Way, North Downs Way, South Downs Way and Wesses Ridgeway, and I don't think I ever did a day with less than 12 miles, but it's nasty slogging those last 3-4 miles after your feet get really sore.

You've got me interested, I've got a week's holiday to use sometime this Autumn, and might look at one of these walks - I've bookmarked the Contour website.  I liek the idea of someone else carrying my bag!

I can recommend Contours, Martin.  They take the money off your credit card sharp, but their service is good.  On our walk there was only one place where the b+b accommodation was disappointing, being on the small side and there was no one there to meet us when we arrived.  Everywhere else was top notch with one place even having complimentary port and sherry in a separate lounge and another having complimentary bottles of water, pots of fruit yoghurt and fresh fruit on the sideboard for you to take with you for the day's walk.

How the collar is worn depends on the denomination of the clergyman, although things in the UK are changing.

The picture from LHAAP shows a minister in the Protestant denomination; priests in the Roman Catholic church would wear the "back to front" collar.  In the UK, Church of England and Roman Catholic clergy wear the "back to front" collar, and increasingly ministers in the Dissenting denominations (Baptists, Methodists, United Reformed) do too, although the older ministers often prefer to stick to wearing the traditional "bands" of these denominations, i.e. like the German  minister in LHAAP's picture.

Martin!: by this time you SHOULD know Masie & Fred's neighbour's brother-in-law, who happened to be married with Masie's niece (daughter of her much older sister), and divorced, and now (he) married to the second cousin of the vicar's sister-in-law's ex-husband! ... :hmm:

Yes, Maisie got a bit carried away with celebrating!

Diane and I have been to four weddings in the last 15 months and this was the first one where one or other or both of us haven't had some function, e.g. taking the photos or leading the congregation in a psalm (me), playing the organ or doing a reading (Diane), so for once we could just relax and enjoy ourselves, as did Maisie and Fred.

But it's Masie: she wouldn't ... (...) :hmm:

No doubt, Gordon! There's more sun than rain in this town, no doubt. We Cariocas have a strange superstition that, when someone comes to Rio from a rainy place (at least for the first time), they "bring rain" with them ... Are Masie & Fred from England? Or New York, maybe? ... (Ontario, god-knows ...): anyway, maybe the superstition worked out :hmm: Or maybe they only planned badly this time, and came on Winter days ;D

Next time, they'll come on Summer, as good first-time tourists -- even though in the second Masie & Fred visit to Rio ;)

MAISIE AND FRED ARRIVE IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS

After a long trip from Martin's London home, our world travellers wait patiently to be greeted at Crown Bay Marina.

They seem to be cooling their shoes. Apparently the pavement was a bit too warm on their feet ...  :klickywink:

After they have had an opportunity to rest up, we'll show them some of the island's highlights.

However, their journey has just really begun. Next week, we leave for Denver, Colorado. Then it's off to Houston, Texas for a few days before we drive to Fort Lauderdale.

So, Masie and Fred will get to see some of the Rocky Mountains, most of the Gulf coast and the best of south Florida before we head back to the Virgin Islands.

Thanks, Martin!

All the best from F&M and me.

see attachment

Hello Richard!

It seems that they got a bit more lucky in the sunny Virgin Islands than in the quick visit to Rio on the Winter ...

When "they're back", on Summer, you'll all have some better photos of sunny Rio ... It may be increadible, but we do have winter days here, from June to August, with rains, even a few days of cold (22 C degrees, don't know Fahrenheit correspondence ...).

Tom Jobim, a famous composer and musician of my father's (& yours Richard, and (late) F. Sinatra Senior) wrote a (bossa nova) song (he was actually one of the creators of the style ...), named "Águas de março", which means "March waters", a reference to the rain waters that begin to drop, late on the month of March ... It's, the beginning of cold winds (and ocean waters), coming from the south, from Antartida, from[through] Patagonia (region in Argentina).

I'm glad Fred & Masie "are in a warmer place" now ;) ... It's good for them to take some Summer sun ;D, specially, told me Masie, because of Fred's bones! :yup:

Good trip!

Gus
:blackhair:

Ps. By the way, do they have a travel schedule? ... ;D If we don't pay attention, they'll be in two places at the same time  / G.

What an excellent adventure! That looked like a very nice day trip and also very educational ( not to mention nutritionally sound!). I always like to see pictures of follys (even the grotesque ones, because someone had the moxie to build something they wanted regardless of what anyone else thought).

Good to see Fred can still get up all those stairs even with his worn-out knees.

I took F&M with me to the British Museum yesterday, but was too shy to get them out for a photo in front of the huge crowds. I must remember to caryy them everyerywhere in case a good photo opportunity presents itself.

Hello, Gordon ...

Hi Richard, they're certainly seeing the world and a range of weather.  With all the travelling they're doing, it's a pity they don't get AirMiles.

Now I know why Maisie and Fred were so exhausted when we picked them up at Crown Bay.

Climbing lighthouses and cliffs ... at their age ...  :klickywink:
(Great photos, Gordon!)

After they've had a couple days rest here, we'll put them on a plane with us to Fort Lauderdale where we'll spend the night. Then, the next day we fly to Denver, Colorado.

We'll be in Colorado through the weekend, then we fly to Houston, Texas. (I'm thinking that by the time we get to Houston, Maisie and Fred will be begging me to send them back to you for some more "restful" cliff climbing.) ...

We'll let them rest up in Houston for a few days before we begin our three day drive along the Gulf Coast to Fort Lauderdale. We'll be in Fort Lauderdale for a few weeks before we fly back to the Virgin Islands.

Gus seemed somewhat concerned about Maisie and Fred being in several places almost at the same time. Since they obviously have an International First Class Pass, they're really only (at most) a day or just a few hours from any of us. So, we need to assure Gus that an itinerary is probably not necessary for our two jet setters ...  :klickywink:

Thanks again for another great adventure, Gordon, and hope to see more of Rio, Gus!

All the best,
Richard

Edit: For some reason I seen to keep misspelling "Maisie" ...  8}

SO DO I !!! ! (Very, VERY >:( with myself ...)

I should have taken them to church, today ... When those guys come from the States, someone in church wants to take them all around (as well as they, usually, want to go all around Rio ...). Well, today's guy did happen to go all around Rio, and there was room to me, because I was one of the only (two) available speaking English guys around, so, I had NEVER been to both the Corcovado mountain (where the Christ redeemer statue is, 700 m high) & to the Sugar Loaf (300 m high) ON THE SAME DAY!

I can't say I thought about Fred & Masie all the time, but I did think with myself ... "Blllllaast!!! I S H O U L D have brought Fred & Masie!!!". (Specially because these guys got a real & unusual luck: a sunny & warm day in the middle of the Winter ... Not that it doesn't happen of us having sunny days on Winter, but one week ago, as I went to Forte de Santa Cruz (two pictures I took of Fred there, one of'em with Masie), it was a luck that it didn't rain, but it was cloudy, and it was really cold! (About between 20-22 Celsium degrees ... Today, 37: Just like some Summer days!) (The guys were really (and unusually) VERY lucky!!!

But what happens here is that I'll NEVER, E V E R get out home without Fred & Masie packed in whatever pocket/bag I manage to take them with me!

-x-

Still, eventually I'll go back to these places, although it isn't in plans, not yet. Carioca daily life don't usually include going up these places, you know? ... Only when tourists (erm, friends, and not only from the States ... last time were from Sampaulo, Brasil) ... so, only when tourists come.

Even so, we come by these places rather frequently, so, many nice pictures can be taken, in moments of bonne chance ...

Replenish sounds like a good idea after that harrowing storm chase scenario, Richard. Glad you and Susan, and Maisie & Fred, are all OK and no damage done.

Your drive very nearly took you between two places dear to my heart - Houston where my dear in-laws live, and Miami Beach where Beth and I got married.

When we were in Miami in Feb 2006, there was still much evidence of damage from Hurricane Wilma, and one Hotel we had booked in the Everglades had to cancel our booking, because it was not longer suitable for guests.

We have another business trip scheduled this month. This time, Maisie and Fred will get to visit San Antono, Texas and San Francisco, California. Hopefully, this trip will be a bit calmer ...  :klickywink:

As you may already know, Susan is from Houston and still has her corporate office there.

Hurricane Wilma made quite a mess when it went through South Florida. I was just looking at the "projected path" of Hurricane Ike. Let's hope that the weather forecasters are wrong. Hurricane Ike is packing winds of 135 plus miles an hour. South Florida doesn't need that kind of visitor!

Thanks again, Martin, for getting me started with Maisie and Fred. After Tropical Storm Hanna clears out of the area, I'm sure that F&M will have some photos to share from Fort Lauderdale ...

Dangerous and exciting times, Richard.  Glad all four of you got through it safely.  A bit of R and R is what you all need now, and then some time to relax in the warmth of the sun.

No doubt Maisie and Fred will say whether they preferred Hadrian's Wall or their Gustav adventure after my planned Hadrian's Wall walk next year.  If the weather then is anything like what we have been having recently, their decision may be far from clear cut, sheer persistence and quantity of the rain making up for the force of Gustav.

You have plenty of hurricanes up there, on the North Atlantic ... :-\
South of the Equator line, all we have are cold winds, coming from the South Pole.

By the way ... Stars (and other astral pilgrims) are named after those who find them ...
How are hurricanes named, do you have any ideas? :hmm:

I am afraid there may be trouble for Maisie and Fred.
I found this article in the newspaper ("De Pers", friday the 12th of September 2008).

It's about a number of things, but including a small part about pensioners who might have over-the-top rates for their pensions and might be loosing out a lot.

I surely hope this doesn't effect Fred and Maisie too much though ...

Looking at the picture more closely, does the problem also affect Richard?

Neat use of a couple of different sets there, that other greybeard (not Richard) who is trying to steal Maisie away from Fred came in a hospital set.

I've been saving towards my pension since I was 26 and I still have no idea if it'll be enough when the time comes.

Hmmm ... Do you think that they're taking turns ... riding in the wheel chair?

I've been saving towards my pension since I was 26 and I still have no idea if it'll be enough when the time comes.

My advice to you, Martin ...

Saving (and investing) are good, but it's a good idea to have a job that you can do regardless of your age.

Unless you make so much money that you don't have to ever worry about money, you will need to continue working (at least part time) if you want to maintain the lifestyle that you had before you became a "pensioner".

There are some people who can "scale down" when they retire and live "comfortably" on their savings and/or pension. But, this is not always easy to do physically or mentally. Those that seem to be the happiest are the ones who continue working at something that they enjoy, and are also able to manage their own time and schedule. In other words ... the best "retirement plan" seems to be working at something you like, when you want to.

All the best,
Richard

But then, I have a couple of umbrellas that give me the taste ... (Pity it doens't rain so much in Rio, so I can't always keep using them. A coat & a hat is easier.)

Fascinating Gustavo, thanks for a wonderful photo-stroll with Fred! Hope he wasn't too hot in his red sweater.  ;D

It's interesting to see those factory buildings, very similar to many old factories, warehouses and mills we have in England, and even in London. Under the right conditions these have been converted into luxury apartments, but what are the right conditions? Primarily location, and I wonder if an entrepreneur bought up one of these delapidated buildings and converted them, whether people would buy or rent luxury holiday apartments in the old area of Rio? Maybe not in the current global economy, but in a few years time?

I love the shopping area with the hat shop and the confeitaria. I can just imagine strolling round there wearing a panama hat (to protect my bald noggin from that 25c sun). That's about as hot as we like it to get in London, anything more starts to get unpleasantly hot, but maybe just because we're not used to it.

You've inspired me to get my camera out and do some photo-walks round Ealing (the suburb where I live) and London. Thanks for reviving the F&M "day out" thread!

It'd be interesting to make of that place a residencial place for higher economical people, but quite a challenge (of faith) to the government ... But an interesting project to some NGOs, perhaps ... ::)

I could imagine you in a Panama ... hahaha!

How old are they?

When Martin began this topic (over a year ago) he introduced Fred and Maisie to us as a couple in their "Autumn" years and told us that Fred said, "I've got a Panama hat that would look silly on anyone under 70 ... "

Martin also said that they were, "Sitting on a park bench on LHAAP's desk ... " and that they were a "retired couple ..."

Lars lives in Denmark and we know that Fred and Maisie were both probably born in Dietenhofen (or Malta). So, it might be safe to assume that Fred and Maisie may have moved to Denmark at a very young age and are now both Danish citizens.

The fact that they are Danish is probably confirmed by this statement from Maisie, "We need to travel; travel the world and see all those places we talked about back when we were courtin'." Why Danish? Because as almost everyone knows, the Danes really love to travel perhaps more than anyone else on the planet ... ;)

Since there only about 5 million people in Denmark (about the population of Houston, Texas), most Danish people also speak English (in addition to Danish).

And, Martin even gave Maisie a bit of an English (or American) speaking accent when she said, "courtin'" rather than courting.

So, I think Martin may have answered most of your questions, Gus ...  :yup:

Sitting on a park bench on LHAAP's desk, our retired couple have a brainwave.

Grandma: Fred, here we are in our Autumn years, you may still have a full head of hair, but everything else is dropping. We need to live our dream before Winter catches us up.

Grandpa:  I've got a Panama hat that would look silly on anyone under 70, and my artificial hip is aching again so there's rain in the air. What did you have in mind?

Gran: We need to travel; travel the world and see all those places we talked about back when we were courtin'.

Grandpa: Well Maisie, that was just to get you to sleep with me.

Gran: I knew that, Fred, but let's live a little more. Let's stick a pin in the Atlas and see where it leads us...

Grandpa: OK Maisie, you lead and I'll follow. (to self in a whisper) <probably get ourselves eaten by cannibals or something...>

Hi Gus, thank you for your tour of Rio with Fred, very interesting and enlightening.  The Confeitaria Colombo looks amazing, just the place for coffee and cakes!  (We have two favourite cafes in Malta, one in Valletta which is all gilt and wall and ceiling paintings and is probably from the same time as Confeitaria Colombo.  The other is in the old capital, Mdina, and is quite different, very old - built into the city walls and very simple, but excellent cakes and coffee at them both!)

The contrast between the different parts of Rio is extreme.  Maybe the old factories might be better used as a basis for conversion for housing for the general population than rich visitors.

Thanks for restarting Maisie and Fred's adventures.  I must admit I have astory dating back to last November which I have kept looking at and thinking of starting to edit the photos for PF, so now I'll get on with it.

What a splendid day for Fred and Maisie!

I love the photos.  You are a good photographer.   :wow:  I am especially impressed with the photos in the aquarium.  Since I did not see any reflections of a flash and I assume you did not take a tripod, I'm guessing you used a high enough ISO to allow for handholding the camera in a dark environment.  My favorite photo was of the baby ray while Fred and Maisie watched.

Take Fred and Maisie on more trips!

Thank you, Richard, for your very kind comments, they are much appreciated, and I'm glad you enjoyed Maisie and Fred's little holiday.

Diane and I have another holidy planned on the north Norfolk coast, a week walking from Hunstanton to Cromer and M and F will almost certainly come with us.  We've had a good few holidays on that coast or nearby (and in fact I'd like to move there but Diane doesn't really) and like the area very much.  I thought of posting some photos from previous times there in the Playmo-free zone for you, but then I remembered that they are in store and not easy to get at.

Lovely pictures Gordon, and great to see some of Norfolk again. When you reach Cromer you're a couple of miles north of Overstrand, a smaller seaside town that my family rented in four different years in the seventies, staying at a house called Cliff Cottage, which at that time was a holiday rental. I think it's now a B&B. Cromer was always the noisy town up the coast, though actually it's very quiet and respectful.

When you pass through Wells-next-the-Sea, think of me too, as I spent another 2 holidays there in the most comfortable holiday cottage we ever rented, which had a huge picture window overlooking the salt marshes to the east end of the town.

That makes six holidays on the Norfolk coast, so I guess it's one of my favourite areas too!

There's no reason why you shouldn't take them to Lisbon, Miguel, and the figures were available from DS but are no lomnger available, which is a pity as no one expected them to be discontinued so quickly.

This was a set we imagined were going to be available for a while.
Also, we thought that, once they're retired, they would have thought to have enough time, now, to run around the world, and spend a little of their life savings ...

(These are the two main reasons I recall.)

Yup, that was it.

Rather than having one figure that we sent around the world to each other, with the difficult and expense involved and the risk of losing the figure, we thought it might be fun to select an cheap and easily acquired DS set that anyone interested could buy, and include them in some travel pictures.

Sadly it seems the set is no longer available, so there are a limited number of Maisie and Freds around.

Why an old couple? Old couples are inherently funny.

Thank you, Martin!   :(

When Richard reads that, I guess you won't get your club badge and goody bag.

Yes indeed, thank you Skypurr for a wonderful tour of the John Paul Jones Museum with Maisie & Fred. Very informative, and well photographed, and you captured the spirit of the M&F visit wonderfully! I regret not visiting this museum the time I holidayed with my parents in Kirkcudbright.

Marvelous job indeed Skypurr.

I would really love to take M&F out some time as well but they are not very easy to get a hold of these days I am afraid.

What owuld be the easiest way to get a hold of this lovely couple?

Thank you, Elaine, for an interesting and entertaining tour of the museum and cottage.       Maisie and Fred came across John Paul Jones briefly when they visited Flambrough Head with me and Diane in an earlier adventure which included going up the lighthouse.

Because Sandy was working at the museum I had to open our lighthouse today for a party of schoolchildren and was going to take Maisie and Fred with me but when I got to the top I realised I'd forgotten to pick them up!
I decided to wait for another time - My knees couldn't stand another trip up 66 stairs

Having a lighthouse of your own must keep you fit with all those stairs.

It must be very annoying if you get into bed and then find you have to go back to the top of the lighthouse because you've forgotten to turn the light off!

Sorry - it isn't actually our lighthouse as such, but it is privately owned and Sandy opens it for visitors at weekends and I get called upon to open it during the week if needed, so it feels like our lighthouse.
It is just across from our cottage and I can see it as I'm typing this.
Actually I hate going up - I trained in Outdoor Education at teacher training college and I used to go rockclimbing and had no fear of heights, but as I've got older I'm a real coward when it comes to heights - I even hate climbing ladders -perhaps if I had a rope attached I'd feel better  ;D
(Plus I have one replacement knee and arthritis starting  in the other so 66 steps is very daunting - that's my excuse anyway )

Oh Elaine, please let me strees once more that the location of your home is so great! I wish i was living in an area like yours.... Although the humidity must be awful for the knees (or knee)...

I'm sorry to read about the knee replacement and arthritis, Elaine - certainly not what you want with 66 steps to climb, even if it's not often.

It's funny how fear of heights changes over time.  As a teenager up to about 16 I didn't like heights.  In my twenties and beyond they didn't bother me, I'd sit on the second storey window sill and wash the windows with no problem and when I was a fire brigade photographer going up a ladder, even a 100ft turntable one, wasn't a problem.  Similarly with cliff edges and church towers.  Now, I'm not too happy with heights again, not always, but sometimes.

That is a wonderful story Elaine!

And I agree with Wold Knight,
If Maise and Fred were to visit my home... Well they would be very boared. ::)

Maybe if they visit the next time I go to DC, or maybe on our Europe trip next summer! :)

Wow!
Fred and Maisie have to be very famous world travelers by now. Y'all did a wonderful job of documenting their travels. Loved the stories and the photos!
Could we try this again soon? Maybe some warning as to which couple will be used so we can buy them before they disappear. Cheers, Pgal
