Title: Greeks & Romans
Post by: PMatt on September 10, 2019, 12:20:14
Let's get the ball rolling on antiquity customs.

First off, an attempt at Commodus. Sources describe him as blonde; still, I thought it best to go with dark hair so as to take advantage of the mustache/beard combo.

I'm not too satisfied with the hair. An afro perm might be the closest match with Commodus's most famous depiction, though I'm afraid it'd look ridiculous in Playmo-form.

Next is something a bit more original – I hope.

Here's my take on Dionysus. I tried to capture an ephebic, youthful look. Wouldn't mind erasing the print from the skirt as it doesn't really match, but couldn't bring myself to do so yet.

I'm a bit bummed Dionysus wasn't given a plastic form together with the other Olympians, I'm really curious as to how PM would have represented him.

Really great work there.
Title: Quo Vadis
Post by: PMatt on October 17, 2019, 15:55:18
It really made my day you liked my previous customs!

Now, for something a bit more substantial. Quo Vadis stuck with me for quite some time after I read it, so I endeavoured to give a plastic form to a couple of the book characters.

First comes Nero (v.1), which you have already seen as my avatar. Suetonius describes him as subflauus, which is to say, with some degree of approximation, blonde. He dons a laurel wreath (rather than the omnipresent golden one), as is typical of poets, which he fancied himself to be.

What would Nero do without a trusted arbiter elegantiae by his side? Here's Petronius. Now I know there's really nothing to identify the klicky as such, so it might as well be anyone else – but hey, that's Petronius to me, not much more I can do.

Now, Petronius is the ultimate authority when it comes to saying what's cool and what's not, but an emperor as... straight-laced as Nero also needs someone to keep him safe.

Here comes Tigellinus, praetorian prefect, with the full might of the cohortes praetorianae. Well, not the full might really, more like a centurion and two legionnaires. An "evil" head would arguably suit Tigellinus more, but apparently I have none around at the moment.

There's not much in the way of customizing really, but the end result kinda makes me happy.

Where are the legionnaires' legs from?

I'm always glad to hear that!

They look great (thought I didn't read the book)...

The pages narrating Petronius's death are among the most moving I've ever read. I can't say I cared too much for the main plot, but the way that character was crafted, one couldn't help growing fond of him.

Where are the legionnaires' legs from?

Actually, I only changed the heads and hair; the rest is the Roman soldier (http://www.playkingdoms.com/pk2/library/articles/themovie/figs1/sms1p2.aspx#p07) from the Movie Series 1.
Title: Artemis
Post by: PMatt on October 26, 2019, 16:31:50
Not unlike most Playmobil fans, I was delighted by the Greek gods series. A couple of them, though, turned out not quite as good as the others in my opinion.

Here's a different – if pretty basic – take on Artemis.

She's great!

And you are right, a couple of them are really REALLY lame (and lazy) - though a great step in the right direction, and I was also delighted about them!

Nice! I also very much like the dusk setting in your pictures. But I am shocked :o to see a bow mangled!

I recognise the feeling, though didn't find 9525 Artemis all that bad (yours is looking much better, though). It is 70213 Aphrodite who really puts me off. So much that she is the only Greek god whom I did not obtain for my collection. Did you improve her as well?

Best wishes
StJohn

Much better than the pink version of Playmobil! She was one of the least intriguing Playmobil gods. Nice try to correct it!

I'm glad it was well-received! Thanks to fellow Playmofriend JLMatterer for showing me how filters can drastically improve a photo.

But I am shocked :o to see a bow mangled!

Guilty as charged! I liked the look enough to sacrifice a bow in order to achieve it.  0)

It very much depends on one's own idea of the character, I reckon. My mental image of Greek gods is mostly flowing robes, tunics and skirts – illustrations by Libico Maraja shaped it this way when I was a child. Magenta Artemis looked... outlandish? to me.

I'm sorry to say no, I haven't tried to tackle Aphrodite: I wouldn't know where to start with her, I'm afraid.

Excellent correction of Artemis. She was a weak klicky, I especially don't like the "vine" print on her torso. Looks tacky. My best guess is they were trying to break up the monotony of all white robes - wasn't monotonous to me though! Anyway excellent work as usuall.

They could have done that with Poseido, right?  It was ridiculous.

(I would still love to find that purple klicky in numbers, cheap. Or the legs. Can you say "purple legion"?  )

Out at night dressed like that? She will catch her death. She should put a vest on. And some boots.

Yeah, Poseidon was kinda cheap. At least he didn't have a fish tail, though.

Mind you, she's an Olympian! It's not like she's gonna stub her toe on a branch.  ;)

That was well-played!

THAT was my problem with him.  Well, and being a repeat of Zeus.

Meaning you would have rather had a fish-tailed Poseidon? That'd have made for a good Triton too if one were to expand their pantheon.

YES! A gorgeous greenish (NOT pink or blue!) mertail!

He would be awesome. Like this (though a pretty klicky), he's just a shameless copy of Zeus. :(
Title: Saint George
Post by: PMatt on November 09, 2019, 12:10:11
Inspired by this (https://i.imgur.com/bmapxP5.jpg) illustration by Peter Dennis, I decided to create a custom Saint George as a III-IV century Roman soldier, rather than the stereotypical armoured knight depiction. (All external links lead to imgur; click pictures to enlarge them)

This version of St George dons a lorica squamata (https://i.imgur.com/OtFXgfh.jpg), puttees (https://i.imgur.com/KvET4V4.jpg), and a ridge helmet (https://i.imgur.com/pOwYleJ.jpg).

Since I could not seem to find any alligator to pit against him, the clichéd dragon will have to do.
