Hi,
I noticed something when I wanted to post several pictures in one post: when I saw that post in the thread, only one picture showed up. I'm certain that the file size of the individual pics was well below the maximum, so what could be the cause?
-
I know this might sound like a daft question, but did you remember to click the [more attachments] link which opens the extra attachment fields?
When I first tried to post multiple pics, I completely forgot about this and kept using the same input field for each different pic. Took me a little while to work out what I was doing wrong. :-[
-
If you try to post a pic which by itself exceeds the limit or a number of pics which together exceed the limit, you get an error message and nothing, text or pics, posted. (Thus speaks the voice of experience! ::)
-
When I was uploading more pictures I did use the separate browsing fields, but only one picture showed up in the actual post. I could make a test post to see if it is still like this...

testing...

I did upload 3 pictures using the correct method (clicking the more attachments button), but again only one is visible >:( (only the first picture)

Hi MBL
Can you please tell me the file sizes of the other two pictures you tried to upload on the same post?
It seems very odd that it won't allow you to attach more than one at a time. :(
I've noticed one thing, but I don't think it's relevant to your problem...
Sometimes if you try to modify an existing post (eg. by adding extra pics where you only had a single one) it won't allow you to do this before you have deleted all of them and pressed "Save". You can then usually re-open the post and attach all the pics you want to, as long as they don't exceed the pre-set limits. I think it's because it doesn't register the sizes of the files attached to the post properly unless you delete them all and begin again. :hmm:

The size of picture 2 was around 76 kb and picture 3 was around 65 kb; pretty average I would say....
-
Sounds quite normal.
I'll look into it today and see if I can find out a possible cause for the problem.
-
I'm still stumped about this, MBL. :(
I searched the SMF forum to see if anyone had encountered this before and couldn't find anything. ???
Since no-one else has indicated they have the same problem, we have to try and look at why this happens to you but not them. Please tell me which browser you are using and whether you receive any error messages at all when trying to post the multiple attachments, and I will post a new topic at the SMF support forum to see if they can help provide a solution to this.

I use Internet Explorer; I don't receive any error messages. In fact, when I try to post more than 1 picture everything seems to go normal until I review the post.
-
I'll test it again, to see if anything has changed...
...and it hasn't :'(
-
This is really odd. Internet Explorer is what I have too, and probably the most common browser amongst the forum users. ???
Is it a recent version you have? I don't think that should really make a difference, but we probably should look at everything.
Please check the description by right-clicking the IE program icon (not the shortcut) and selecting Properties from the drop-down menu and then hitting the "Version" tab (That's if it looks the same to you. I have 6.0, so it may be different).
The more info I have, the better armed I am to get answers to this puzzle at the SMF forum. ;)
-
I have version 5.1.7 for Mac (so forget the right-clicking, as I have only 1 mouse button ;) ; with me it is located in the info-menu, but the result is the same).

How about switching to Safari as your browser?
Since we switched browsers (a while back) i have consistently used Safari with very little trouble at all.
Though it does not do well in Playkingdoms or J4K.
Which OS are you using?
We are all upgraded to Tiger, here.
-
I currently have OS9. I have no experience with Safari or other browsers except I.E. (it worked well enough for me so there was no reason to switch).
-
Well, I posted about it last night: Multiple Attachment Problem (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=58504.0)
All I can do now is wait and hope that someone has a clue how to fix it. :(
I did test the permissions thing since one person at SMF suggested that might be to blame. I put 'possum' into the same group as MBL (increased her post count by 100! :P) just to make sure this wasn't a problem related to his "Playmo Fanatic" posting status. Possum was able to attach 3 pics to a post (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=255.0), so I really doubt that this is being caused by the member groupings.
I don't think that MBL should have to switch browsers either. There must be an answer to this somewhere. ???

Just curious... what kind of problems do you have with pk and j4k when using Safari?
-
I just checked.
It DOES NOT happen at J4K, only at Playkingdoms. Please excuse my mistake.
At playkingdooms, the page doesnt format itself properly.
I get little black text disclaimer, and the if message about click here if you dont see the menu in the middle of every page that I open.
So it appears on pictures, text, links etc.
Tahra does state that the site works best with IE, and with IE the little black text appears at the bottom of the page, or so I believe.

No problem. ;) I just wanted to know in case there was something we could do to improve it.
I can pass on the info about your problem to Tahra, but I don't know if she can do anything to fix it. ??? Sounds like a major annoyance though. :(
I think the major difference between our 2 sites (not counting the use of .asp files) is the frames.
Pk uses frames, j4k doesn't... although sometimes I really wish I did - especially when I have to edit something in the navigation menu, for example. (Just recently I changed a link for j4k's guestbook which meant editing 160+ pages 8})

Hi MBL
A Support Specialist from SMF had a look around in the forum settings earlier today and couldn't find anything that was obviously wrong or that might have prevented you from being able to post multiple attachments.
He suggested increasing the size limits for attachments to see if that might make a difference. For the moment, they are set at 250kb per attachment. Please try once more to attach 3 or 4 pics to a post (nothing too large to begin with, just the size that you normally would be using).
If it still doesn't work, then I don't know what we can do. I think we'll have to assume that something in the SMF program is not compatible with the system you are using. :(
edit:
I know you're not keen to change browsers, but Mozilla is a very good alternative to IE. It's free, it's just as easy to use and only takes a few minutes to download and set up. I installed the Windows version yesterday for the very first time, and I find I prefer it to IE already... I'm seriously considering making it my default browser after 5 years of using nothing but IE. 8-)
Mozilla 1.2.1 is the only version available for Mac OS 9. You can find a link to download it and the bottom of this page (http://www.mozilla.org/download.html) if you're at all interested. Sorry I can't provide a more workable solution for you. :(
-
Ok, let's see:
-
I found out that when I go back to modify the post I can add only 1 picture per modification. So if I want to post a total of 3 pics I have to modify this post 2 times. :hmm: 8}
Maybe the Mozilla link will make a difference.....
-
I've downloaded Mozilla and it's currently running, so lets try:
-
It works!!!! :D :D :D
It is strange that IE won't do this.... I'll keep both browsers on my computer though, in case some site won't accept Mozilla.
-
So, to get this straight...
The multiple attachments did not work at all until you switched to Mozilla? If that is the case I will let the Support Team know so they can advise others who may come across this problem. ;)
I have reduced the attachment allowance back to 100kb per attachment, but increased the maximum to 400kb per post, where before it was only 300.
This means that from now on everyone should be able to post 4 attachments at no more than 100kb (each attachment) on each individual post. If, somehow, you receive an error message again, it will probably be because the file sizes are too close to the allowed limit.
I'm really glad that Mozilla is working for you, MBL, and that you weren't averse to testing it. Thanks for your patience. :D

It looks like that's the case. I have to get used to Mozilla, but I'm sure it will work out fine. And I can confirm that the multiple attachment works now for the maximum of 4 pictures... 8-)
-
Thanks for the clarification. :)
-
I am glad that things have been figured out.
Its a PITA when something as universal as IE doesnt quite work right.
MBL, if you do any systems programming you should look into OSX, Tiger version. My DH does that kind of lowlevel programming, and he is thrilled with Tiger.
