Title: Playmofriends Jousting Tournament in Winterhaven!
Post by: Gis on September 23, 2010, 08:14:31
I have been planning to make a photo story of a jousting event for a while. But after thinking it over, i figured it would be a great opportunity to have my playmofriends be part of the fun. I already did an announcement about it in the thread over here. (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=5780.0) but I hope this post is more clear in what is exactly going on.

The idea is that everyone here at playmofriends can choose a knight which will then be their champion in the jousting tournament. The availability of the knight of course depends solely on my collection, which in my opinion is quite decent at this point.

Any knight can be chosen, however the knights on a caparisoned horse are of course what people have been choosing so far. Tiermann has made a wonderful chart with all caparisons, which you can find in this thread. (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=5831.0)

I hope it’s ok with Tiermann as I used (abused) his charts below to show which Caparisons are still available and which aren’t (Tim please let me know if this bothers you and I will find another way to represent this). If there is “Red Cross” through one of the pictures it means that that specific caparison is not available in my collection. If there is a “playmofriends user name” written on top of the picture it means that knight has already been selected by said member (Caparison 1 (Red Pleated) could of course still be used as I feel it is very generic, although I must admit I don’t have the shields/banners from 3265).

I am hoping to get at least 32 people participating (currently have 10), so please don’t be shy, the only thing you have to do is tell me which one you want me to use as YOUR champion. There is more opportunity to participate, but if you don’t want to participate any further, apart from your choice of knight, that’s fine as well. If you have any question, don't hesitate and ask them here or shoot me a PM!

Thanks for reading  :)

shirona, Just to be 100% clear does that mean you would like number 23 to be your champion in this jousting tournament? or were you just voicing your opinion?

Do I need to have the knight myself?

If not, so I would like him to be my champ! ;)

"The availability of the knight of course depends solely on my collection, which in my opinion is quite decent at this point."

Nope you don't have to own him yourself. So he will now be your champion in the Tournament.

Thank you for joining :-)

Good, maybe you meant we both should have it. Now it's clear! ;)

People like to short my name into "Shiri". That's okay for me! :D

Gis, Junior said he would like to take part but didn;t know which were available.
He's at school at the moment ( :yippee: hurray!  :-[ ) so can I put in his choice please.
His preference was for number 15 the green dragon, but as that isn't available could be have number 12 green diamond. (green is his favourite colour!)
(He did want a skeleton as his knight but I told him I didn't think that would be allowed )

YAY!!!! Great to have Junior join as well!

Even though the king has stated that all feuds will be on hold, I think he is not willing to extend this to undead. Have him contact me through PM and we'll discuss his figure :-)

Thanks Gis.
BTW I have the caparison for number 7 - the black with red and white checks one. I don't need it.
If you would like it pm me your address amd it's yours! (don't have the head cover though!)

Elaine (http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/mgqueen.gif)

Edit - have the shield too.

The Checkered one, number 7,
Does not actually go with that shield.
It goes with the Checkered Shield. (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-63-3280)

The Black Lion Shield doesn't actually have a caparison. :-\

If it is not too late, & you have it still available, I am interested in knight 17 :-\, although I am not a medieval collector or specialist :knight:, your new competition has sparked my interests to where I would like to be involved :yippee:!

YAY great news Bill  :yippee: :yippee:!!!

I will reserve that one for you right away!

If I have responded in this thread the pictures in the first post should be updated soon after so they should almost always reflect what is currently reserved and available :-)

There was a small change. WarriorOfToys just claimed Caparison 11 (like Tim predicted he would *grin*) I am unsure yet which shield he will be using with that.

Elaine will be kindly sending me number 7 but I will only make it available to choose when I have the physical object in my hands!!

No problem with using the charts Gis, this is the sort of use I created them for. As long as the Animobil logo stays on so people can find me. I have had to start adding an Animobil watermark to all of my photos on my site. It's fine if people download them for their own use, but I've got merchants linking to them and using up my bandwidth without giving me any credit. So at least people will be able to see where the pictures are coming from.
I believe I have an extra #15 in the cupboard I can send you Gis. I think you are being a little too conservative about the timing. It would be nice to see it happen in November or so, if it stretches out too long interest may get lost.
I guarantee this wont be the only one of these. I have every intention of having a tourney myself in the spring or summer now that you've given me the idea.

Post by: Gis on September 23, 2010, 19:49:05
Thank you very much again for the use of your pictures I really think it will help ALOT!

In regards to the timing, I understand your sentiment. however I also need to look at my own schedule.

I only really have time to work on things Friday and Saturday night. October is extremely busy, so November is really optimistic. I have a lot of ideas and I don't want to compromise to much. I have taken it over christmas so I can use the week I have off there to do a lot of the photo shooting.

I fully understand your sentiment of people loosing interest I guess it's upto me to make sure there is enough happening in Winterhaven untill that time :)

I hope you understand where I am coming from.

In regards to that horse coat number 15!!

 :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

 :thanks: :thanks: :thanks:

I have been looking for that one for quite some time!!

I will send you a PM!

Not a bribe, but it would definitely have given my knight an advantage, but I was denied :P! I could picture it now,...my knight mounted upon his noble steed,..... fixing the crosshairs of the sight mounted upon the sniper rifle on to the challenging knight across the tourney field,.... ;D

Depending on the scoring system Gis settles on, it might just rule you out of any success. The object is to break your lance on the opponent, not to kill him. If you have no lance to break you can't score any points.  ;)

Sorry I havent been clear on that before. I managed to get a hold of the first two Caparisons without their respective knights. So for these two you would kind of need to supply your own design and then we'll see if I have it avail in my collection.

Giorginetto who choose number 1 OBVIOUSLY chose to go with a Nuremburg Knight which I have so that wasnt a problem. I am sure we'll find something for you that is according to your tastes Heronimus!

Hi Gis.
I would like to have a Champion for myself too. It's this one:

It's the Ritter Christopher with silver outfit instead of golden, and matching feather (clear blue). Can you make it? The harness for the horse comes from the 30th b-day Special I think, but a silver one will do if you can't spare this one.
How will you decide who wins the fights? Will you roll a 20-sided die like when we played D&D? ???

Hello Gis,

I ve been very busy making my custom.

See here:

I have made my own platemail and helmet.

Here is the equipment I intend to use as Ali Baba is kindly helping to demonstrate.

Not sure about the shield yet and Aziz will be getting some sort of chasuble over his armour with his colours on it. Not quite finished yet.

Now I have some questions.

Is the fight to the death? If so, I need to sharpen my lance and give it a steel tip. No problem, I would be happy to do that.

Is the sword admissable? I didn't put the platemail all the way to around the back. Do I need to do that?

Are the helmet and armour okay?

Are magic swors alowed? Because the king is giving away 3 magical items as a reward?

Do I need to bring more equipment? Tent, a couple of guards? Money? Incense? Mirre?

Does Aziz need to visit a church or attend some ungodly ritual?

I thought about that for a long time.

I used a sheet of white stickers, painted them silver. I have a small cutting machine for photo's. I used that to cut the plates individually and stuck them on a white body.

I really wanted a saracen look, but did't have a white platemail body.

I've put the original pics in my photoalbum, so you can enlarge the pics.

I did something similar with an Arab custom of mine...
But instead of cutting him,
I just secured the helmet on top of the turban.

I am still missing the "Ritter Christopher" but he is on my want list. He will just get re-prioritizes now!! I will try and get him soon!!

I have some ideas on how things will work but I still need some time to settle on things. I am discussing with some people.

Great to have you join!! Will update pictures and things tonight :-)

Hello Gis,

I ve been very busy making my custom.

Good to have you join and your custom is great, can't wait to see it IRL!!!

In regards to your questions:

These are not fights to the Death. It is a friendly tournament organized to celebrate Winterhaven's first century!

It is only going to be a Jousting Tournament. Everybody will use the same standard Jousting Equipment and I am NOT going to give people certain bonusses depending on their equipment. I want to keep things as simple as possible so it will be fast paced, action with some details but not down to the nitty gritty.

In regards to the other equipment. Nothing is needed, however the more background story you provide the more detailed I can get into the charachters during the photo stories.

As other members have already expressed interrest in doing similar things it would be great to get to know all the participants better IMO so they can get some sort of reputation...who knows what this can grow into :-) So you are more then welcome to bring anything and everything you like.

There are no rituals are anything planned, there is a Temple of Avandra (Goddess of Luck and Change) in Winterhaven for those in need of such!

Thanks for your Questions :-)

Who decides when two knights fight, who the winner is? Sorry, if I didn't read it, if you already said that.

In german forums, we did some events, and found a way to find a winner.

There are chat's like this

http://server4.webkicks.de/diesammler/

you write    /wuerfel  means dice in english

When you write that there comes 1,2,3,4,5 or 6. The one with the most eyes is the winner. Very simple.  ;D

I am planning to use some die rolling, either by the person who's knight it is, or I will do so myself if that person is not interested.

The exact way how we will resolve these things is yet to be decided, as there are MANY options and I want to make sure people are having fun and it gives good story telling opportunities.

I will post final battle rules in this thread obviously!

What about an initial joust,
Then a foot fight for after someone has been knocked off.

2 points knocking someone off,
then 3 bouts, each worth one point. :)
Ties count as misses.

And there were other tournament events,
Like a grand Melee that we could recreate. ;D

I know that official tournaments had Grand Melees and such and that there are many options on how to score the jousting. I am already working on a point system but I do want to keep it to "just" jousting, to keep it simple.

Well I think Gis, that it is just you doing everything you have to keep it simple. Otherwise you will need 30 hours days!!!  Wot's idea and everybody else's suggestions are right but for just one is a lot of work. Other than that, for the tournament to be fair it just have to be a matter of "luck" so dices I think are the best option IMO.

Gis, thanks for the answers. There is lot's of story behind Aziz. He is one of my D&D characters. Played with him for years and years. When he is finished I probably tell a little more of him.

For now, he is a lawfull good paladin with a holy avenger sword (a gift from a dying crusader knight) and a bonded mount (not pictured). A prince with great charisma (movie star like), but a terrible bore sometimes. Bit of a don Quichotte.

I also think simple is best, for now. But great fun!!!

My Knight ( and apologies for not having posted a pic yet as my plamos are 80km away from where I live at the moment, will do very soon though ..) , he is the red knight from set 3265 but with the Nuremberg insignia on his rear armour and shield . My Nuremberg champion is as you understand a very experienced knight that has served with my Nurerberg guard since its very creation. He is the leader of the Nuremberg Horsed guard, the city guard reporting to the City Council , but also the champion of my King.

He is known to be merciless and fearsome equally effective mounted on his black horse ( nemesis) or on foot with his sword . He has lead the cavalry attack against the yellow dragon knights in a massive battle 10 years ago when the yellow and greek dragons formed an alliance with the viking and attached the king helped by the basilisk knight with their siege machines ... He killed 4 of them in the process. His light armour on him and his horse allow him to be lighting fast and very manoevrable , critical to close battle. He is looking forward to make some of these new knights eat some dust and realise that experince and speed are key in ajousting match . Beware of my King's Champion , he has never lost a jousting match .....

That moldy old toothpick you call a spear? It wouldn’t even pierce a slab of warm butter. I will delete the chainmail underpants from Aziz’s attire, as it is clear he is in no danger at all.

I suggest you start derusting your knight’s armour instead of keeping eyes at Aziz, as your knight apparantly hasn’t done anything knightly in 10 years (exept writing girly poems for the flee ridden hags that infest his country).

I was looking at the great chart of knights that has ben posted and couldnt help but notice the following

The latest horses especially when in armour gear and cloths, comparing to the old type and of course bearign in mind the klickie standard size,  they look so tiny almost as donkeys ..

The old type horse i always thought was a bit small ( think of scale measure ) but the new horse is bloody tiny, a pony i  would say..

.. The knights on these ponies should have theri own pony tournament and leave the real jousting to the real knights riding proper horses not ponies i say !!!!

I still need to start working lots of things including the exact details of how we will run this.

Because I know how much work this is bound to take I have stated that it will take place in January, so Arnaud the French post has nothing to do with it :-)

I will do more background stories soon :-) I think the sorting of our Playmoden is slowly coming to a halt...which means we almost know where everything is...had some nice surprises too!

Your Herald could say who is to go next,
Then whoever is next writes a speech for his champion. ;D

It is how we did it in SCA.
When our baron came onto the field,
He had a procession behind him,
and our local Herald called out a really cool speech. :)

One of the first parts of the Jousting Day was planned to be a procession leading past the Royal "boxes" which will be on BOTH sides of the "arena" it would be great to have a herald call out every one.

I could have the royal Herald do this or someone from the knights followers if they have these. It is however up to the people themselves to write a (very) small intro, because otherwise it will just be a name.

Btw there are still around 10 seats empty in the royal boxes, if any royalty wants to attend...first come first serve.

The Sultan???? Travel outside his realm to the land of the infidels? Eat their haraan dogfood? He might well be tempted to bring his army to teach them some civilization!

Besides, his entourage is a couple of 100 people. (That is with only a small travel harem of about 20 wives).

Winterhaven would be better off without Aziz's family. They are a bit demanding.

A mistery knight? That wouldn't be a black one, would it?

Anyway, I've hit two snags. Firstly my lance. I have 2, but none of them have a hand guard. The other day I saw a pic of a knight with such a lance, but it didn't have a handguard as well.

It is the lance my avatar is holding in the pic above. Is that original without handguard?

I haven't been able to find a loose on, so when needed I make one myself.

Onther snag is fabric. We have a bag with a perfect fabric for my knight. But my wife won't let me have it to cut up. Does anyone have some tips?

Un-chivalrous? But this is exactly the behaviour we have come to expect from your European Knights. Can you please explain where exactly we are failing in displaying the right customs? What is expected from us?

I am going to make a recommendation for the members that posted the negative words in their posts to change them or let me know what words can be replaced with more accepting ones.

Hi! I'm sorry to ask but as English is not my main language....is that word THAT serious? When I read that post I thought it was used in a sort of funny, cocky way to "scare" fellow knights in the tournament....maybe from the pint of view of our fellow member's clicky.... I didn't' think it was offensive.....  :-\
Why is THAT bad?
Title: Re: Playmofriends Jousting Tournament in Winterhaven!
Post by: Ali Baba on November 04, 2010, 22:23:57
That is exactly how it was meant, Tonguello. I was the only one that use the i-word. It was just a little character play, to get into the mood of the tournament, shall we say.

I thought the use of that word through and made sure it was used with regards to fictional characters and not to forum members.

Dear Georginetto, I'm sorry if I offended anyone. But I am very curious as to why you post this now. What triggered you to say this at this point? After all it was days ago that the i-word was used and you yourself referred to my knight as arabic kebab. Why the change of heart all of a sudden?
Title: Re: Playmofriends Jousting Tournament in Winterhaven!
Post by: bonniebeth on November 04, 2010, 23:08:16
yes, I looked back at the context where this word was used, and I personally didn't find it offensive. I didn't take it to mean that you were actually referring to anyone as infidels, but more that maybe your fictional klicky would view it that way. I guess it's just one of those subjects where you have to be careful because of current world events.

I think we all know that this has been playful banter, but the concern maybe is that it will begin to get out of hand if racial, ethnic or religious slurs are used, as some are offensive whether said playfully or not.

That is a true out look of how this could turn into a bad situation! People who live in the United States are being labled as infidels, so it is a word not appreciated here.

Yopu havent offended me at all. I just share the same view as some others that we all , including me have to  try be a bit more politically correct etc thats all  and the last think we want is misundertsandings etc , nothning personal at all , after all ..

I thought the word was used "in character" between one klicky and another, not to refer to real people.

I'd be all for the removal of all this "banter" though, it's extremely boring to read, and putting me off visiting this thread for actual news of the tournament.

Maybe we could have a separate thread where people introduce their klicky jousters and entourage, and keep all the hot air for that.

Title: Introducing Sir Sigismund of Sweetwater

Sir Sigismund earned his knighthood when he defeated the slimy serpent of Slippery Bottom in single combat.

Together with the knighthood he was awarded a coat of Arms, black serpent on yellow field, to commemorate his victory, and the custody of Castle Slurpy.

Well thanks.  What he hadn't been told was that the castle was also in the Swamp of Damp Regrets. He decided to dismantle the castle stone by stone, and move it to the nearby Pile of Concrete Edging Bricks.

A Partial success. What he had forgotten to tell the architect was that the castle would also need rebuilding at the same time. No wonder the quote was so low, and they didn't even clean the stonework.

Nonetheless the costs wiped out his small treasury, so he determined to rebuild his fortune (and eventually his castle) by fighting in tournaments across the length and breadth of the High Kingdom.

Hencely he set out, accompanied by his squire Sam, son Larry the Gullible, bowman Bill, and his scribe and coin-counter Fat Freddy, who always seems to be the best fed of the whole group.

Here they are seen crossing the Lawn of Infrequent Mowing.

What other adventures and perils will they encounter on their journey? Only time, and the author's focus and energy, will tell.

Got my lances in today. The final pieces I need to finish my champion. Will get to work on it this weekend.

By the way, I like Martins idea to put the pre-tournament banter in a different thread.

Anyway, great photo series, Martin. Love the background story. How did you get the boggy smell off your playmobil?
