Title: All the ghost pirates...
Post by: Wolf Knight on December 28, 2010, 21:23:06
I know Customiser has done some very nice reviews of some of the following sets, but I thought of putting all these ghost pirate sets together just to give you a complete file!

First here is 4802 Shell with cannon!!

We have a really nice shaped shell, with white teeth, and when it opens it reveals a cannon...(so don't dare come close and annoy it... ;) ) the yellow inner part has holes on which you insert the cannon and the footholds for the ghosts...I like the variations on these ghosts...they are actually the same design, as you'll notice later, but each have different items, colours and characteristics to reveal unique characters!!! This set also inclused a small sea serpent...good companion for a ghost  :D

4804 Giant Crab...

No matter how hilarious it sounds, i think this is quite a sinister set...I can recall seeing a whole army of these giant crabs at a diorama and it just gave me the creeps...

There is not much to tell really, apart from the fact that the top of the crab is an interesting design to allow the ghost piaret to sit on it... you can also see that one claw is bigger than the other and that it can also open and close!!! While playing, i am sure theat this crab can squeeze mani enemies in its claw!!! :o
I find the klicky to be quite intersting, that sash has a great vivid red colour! and the orange hair... something to give nice visability in the dark waters!!!  :D

4803 Ghost Whale Skeleton

This is actually a very interesting and well designed set! The skeleton is glowing in the dark...(too bad I was not able to make the pic look good)... and it rests on a rock which makes it look more like a bastion... so imagine having the ghost ship attacking this rock... Under the skull (which has a nice design that allows the officer in charge to sit on it and start shouting commands at his warriors) there is a cannon that enables the ghost in charge to protect the rock from any attacks...a very imporant feature is opening whale ribs, as if to allow the thorax to work as a prison!!!

The ghosts that come with this set are interesting ... especially the one with the blue colours...

4805 Three-Headed Sea Serpent

No introductions needed!!! This serpent makes Nessie (forgive me Sylvia  :) ) look like a lamb...

the rest will have to wait for tomorrow boys and girls!!! I am off to bed!! Thanks for your patience!!!  :)

cool!  I love the pirates theme, as you know, and have always been fascninated with the ghost pirates but have never gotten the nerve to really drop the cash on any of the sets (just the clickies).  I actually really like the crab just for itself.  I think it's kinda cute and neat!  The whale bones are cool too;  which it were a full skeleton though.  Not crazy about the clam.  And I love the hydra, way cool.  Nice review!  Now you must also do the ghost ship!

I think our own Macgayver did that diorama featuring the ghost crab army! Thanks for the reviews on this strange theme, Panos! Maybe it will persuade some of us to purchase these before they are retired!

Yes, thank you for this review. It has given me some appreciation for this theme. Maybe I won't let chris use the next ghost pirate we get free with an order for target practice!

I like the whale skeleton. It has interesting possibilities.

Nice series of reviews, Panos, thank you.  The claws on the crab might have use on some major fire brigade rescue equipment I suppose -  - but overall I'm confirmed the theme isn't really up to Playmobil's best, although there are some clever ideas in it such as the whale's thorax doubling as a prison.

Now you must also do the ghost ship!

Well Atto, I will post some pics later on with the most important features of the ship, but I think Customiser has done a really great review here: http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=2763.0

I think our own Macgayver did that diorama featuring the ghost crab army!

Hmmm maybe he was... i really cannot recall...

Yes, thank you for this review. It has given me some appreciation for this theme.

Good to know Bonnie!!!  :)

but overall I'm confirmed the theme isn't really up to Playmobil's best, although there are some clever ideas in it such as the whale's thorax doubling as a prison.

Yes that is indeed the case Gordon... I visited my biggest local toy shop today and the themes that sold the least for Christmas time were these ghost pirates... maybe they are uterly fantastic for children too...

Thank you all for you feedbacks  :)

4801 Stingray Rider

For reasons that I am certain you will understand by looking at following pics, I find this to be the most hilarious set playmobil has ever made... Although I like the ghost pirate klicky (he is the only ghost pirate with an eyepatch  ) and although the coral keeps the stingray ''floating'', the stingray tself is a bit... ok its too... well... i cannot find the word...  :giggle:

Title: Re: All the ghost pirates...

it kinda reminds me of the teacher in Finding Nemo.
It has been a reat reviw Panos, thanx.... still I don't think I would buy these sets.... I DO WANT A GLOW IN THE DARK MONKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Someone has one to spare or trade?

I dunno why, but I like the stingray!  It does look like the teacher in Finding Nemo, lol.

As far as creatures go, though, I WISH playmobil would release a GIANT SQUID or GIANT OCTOPUS.  THe biggest one they have already just isn't suitable to attack a full-size ship.

Yes, if you're going to do fantasy creatures, make them legendary ones, like they already did with unicorns and fairies. A giant squid is a good idea. A yeti would be cool too, or a bigfoot. Or a chupacabra.  ;D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra

Thanks Panos for the review :)

Does anyone know if the whale skeleton actually matches the size of the living whale from the marine world theme?
Title: Re: All the ghost pirates...

I just bought the whale ( I couldn't resist)  and just by looking at the pics...I could say the skeleton is a lot bigger.

The teacher from Finding Nemo... yes! maybe that was what it felt familiar with it! As for the monkey...you never know  ;) let me see if I can do anything...

Cartoonish? ugly? Weird? All of the above?

More or less...yeah...

What were they thinking?

Haven't the foggiest... maybe a fantasy theme that can attract more buyers?

As far as creatures go, though, I WISH playmobil would release a GIANT SQUID or GIANT OCTOPUS.  THe biggest one they have already just isn't suitable to attack a full-size ship.

Now that would be indeed great to see!!!

Now your hand's itching, right Luis? Just another playmofriend to drag down the hole  ;D!!!

I just bought the whale ( I couldn't resist)  and just by looking at the pics...I could say the skeleton is a lot bigger.

Well done Gaston!! I am trying to get the exloration ship...didn't managed to get it today either... but... ther'es alwyas tomorrow!!!

And Gaston is right Luis, the skeleton is a lot bigger than the whale!

ahh ohh, thank you both for the info on the size accuracy. :)

Panos, actually my hand's been itching ever since I knew this theme existed :o :-[
Since these sets will be around for another year in the US I've been resisting to buy them - First I need to complete themes from the years I was not into collecting. ::)

4800 Three Ghost Pirates

This set represents variations of ghost pirates already shown in other sets! The main klicky, which looks to me as a first mate, is the same as the one in 7969 - Ghost Pirate Game (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=7969)

The weapons are the most interesting parts in this set, especially the rusty scimitar and axe and the big pistol!!! The odd one out: one of the ghost pirates has a katana!!!

I know what you mean... I try to get hold of boxed knight sets from the 90's but all the ones I find are so expensive...
I visited my major local toy store this evening again...the ghost pirates and the safari theme are the least to sell...

OMG how so?? :o
well, more for me then

before I came back to the pm fan forums I thought this theme was a hit...not I see it's all the opposite :(
I once posted a thread on Playmoboard saying the ghost pirates would be one of my top desired themes - I'm glad my wish came true, it just feels weird to be almost the only one who is happy :P

Well lets face it, these sets are not exaclty state of the art... I like them, but not that much...
Construction sets have sold the most these days mainly because boys would associate themselves with an impressive big yellow constuction tool easier!
The safari theme probably did not do well because, well, there is no appropriate zoo in the city (forgot to tell you about that Bonnie) I doubt there is anything decent in Athens either...so no wild animals for the children to relate to...
Finally, its a greek motherly mentality to keep children away from anything monster-like ... its ok with dinosaurs, but not with fantastic monsters, even reality based ones...

No zoo where you are?  :(o): I couldn't deal with that! I can't imagine kids growing up without seeing real giraffes and elephants.  :( Though truly the zoo in my city isn't so great either, but there's a really good one in New Orleans, about an hour away.

The only way I endorse zoos are if they are housing animals that can not survive in their natural habitat due to previous injury. If the animal is healthy they need to be free not imprisoned.

Yes but what most people don't realize is that the animals in zoos today were born and raised in captivity, and as such, they cannot be released into the wild. They will slowly starve to death. Better to give them a comfortable home in a zoo.

Also, zoos perform an important function in preserving species that are extinct or nearly extinct in the wild. Most modern zoos participate in Species Survival Plans to try to keep these animals from dying out. They also help educate people about animals and their environments.

However, i have to agree that certain animals do not belong in captivity. It's sad to see a tiger pacing up and down trying to find a way out of its cage. These animals usually have a territory of 60 square miles, and simply cannot be happy in a zoo habitat no matter how much enrichment it recieves. other animals seriously don't seem to know the difference.

I also don't approve of keeping large marine mammals like orcas in small tanks and making them perform tricks all day long. Not much better than a circus if you ask me.

I agree with you about about sea world needing to be outlawed! They need to stop letting animals reproduce in captivity in order to break the cycle. To prevent species extinction, they need to start prosecuting poachers with life time prison sentences or death.

I certainly won't argue with that!

As to the zoo thing it is really funny, because the people who love and support zoos feel that way because they love animals, and those who hate zoos and want to abolish them feel that way because they love animals. Just two different points of view!

Going back to the topic: I actually love the ghost pirates.

I went for them because I could get the Hydra and the Stingray for half price. And I really loved the Hydra.
When I unpacked the Stingray, I really loved it (so long as it kept it's mouth shut). I actually bought two, so that it could form some sort of "flying patrol"...

Th  e one I liked least is the whale-skeleton. Will have to buy one, just to get the theme complete. But somehow it just doesn´t do anything for me.

Bogro.

Final set, at least from the first issued series and the ones availabe here,

4806 Ghost Pirate Ship

Just some overview pics to start with....
Title: Re: All the ghost pirates...
Post by: Wolf Knight on January 02, 2011, 20:19:11
... and a few features...

The cabin wall can be taken off for easier playing... (attachment 1)
The deck is very narrow and the cannons are actually stuck on each other...  ::) If I was a kid I'd fing that annoying... not much room to play in there... (attachment 2)
But what I really loved is this huge, anchor  (attachment 3) Its not hoold onto the hull by a rope but with a long(plastic) chain...very fitting for a ghost ship... ;D
Title: Re: All the ghost pirates...
Post by: Wolf Knight on January 02, 2011, 20:25:18
And here are the klickies ghost pirates that go with the ship... (Gaston, there's your favourite glow-in-the-dark monkey!!! (attachment 1)
Finally, tha most impotant, and fun feature of the ship, a movable deck to reveal the ghosts.... You just turn the pin clockwise and the false (swiveling) deck turns clockwise to reveal the ghosts... thus giving the impression that these guys are indeed one with the ghost ship  ;) (attachments 2&3)

Excellent review Pano,
I already have the 1) giant crab, 2) three head sea serpent, 3) three ghost pirates and the special offer that gives you from the Playmobil HQ when you buy more than 40 euros a ghost pirate nr 7969. I also love that ghost ship !!!
Title: Re: All the ghost pirates...
Post by: BlackPearl2006 on January 02, 2011, 21:50:51
thanks for the ship review!  I actually like this older style ship, but this mold somehow begs me to want to "fix" it (as macgayver has).  To give it proper masts, mend the holes in the hull, and make it un-haunted.

I wonder why it only comes with one set of ratlines/shrouds that just dangle on one side with no deadeyes at all.  The rear spanker sail makes no sense to me (as in, if you tried to reconstruct it pre-haunted days, it makes no sense to just be a hanging piece of cloth on a yard arm boom).   Also the holes for the cannons are just damage holes to the ship, not really cannon ports (though I don't think this type of ship typically had real cannon ports anyway).   I also wish it had normal railing (instead of bone railings).

My favourite part really is the anchor.  I wish I could buy two of those anchor seperately to use on my black pearl.  (btw, I know everyone always wants parts numbers to certain parts....is that because there is a place you can order individual parts seperately?  And in larger quantities?  If so, I would order a bunch of these anchors! sorry for my newbiness in this dept)

Interesting how this ghost ship and the 4290 ship both command three-digit prices on some listings in ebay.  Production-wise I can see why, but the product itself certainly does not justify the price, even at the original retail mark at around US$50-$60 dollars.  Just so playskool-ish.

But, I will be buying one of these ships when I can afford it, to customize.  :D

isn't this the one you can only get with mail-in orders?  The only thing disappointing about the ghostpirate clikies is they're not much different from each other.  This one is the same one in the 3-pack set as well as the ship from what I can tell, or very simlar.  I thought about getting him just for completion sakes, but he looks exactly the same, save for the extra barrels/game he comes with.

Thanks for this addition Wesley!! I have not opened my 7969 (despite the fact that I have four of these  ;D) and I see this klicky is different... the stripes of cloth on his legs are white whereas these stripes are red on the 4800 klicky... Its really a swapping of parts among all of them!

You will also find this site useful for part numbers:

I serached on "ghost" for you and this link shows you the ghost pirates, plus one or two other ghosts which got caught up in the seach:

If you click on a figure, you can find out which set they are from and call up the inventory for that set.

Thanks for this very comprehensive review Panos and Wesley.  I enjoyed reading it and seeing the sets, but they won't go on my shopping list.
