Title: Hotel (5265), accessories (5270, 5271, 5268) and extra floor (5269)
Post by: Birdie on October 27, 2012, 22:56:54
I decided I could use a treat so I went to get the new hotel 5265 and some related sets today.

For a while I had been in doubt wether or not to buy them, because of all the pink and fuschia colours. The front of the box, showing the inside of the hotel, reminded me of a Barbie dream house. But then I took a good look at the front of the building (with the balcony and palm trees, resembling a Californian hotel) and I was sold  :)

I went to toystore Bart Smit (Belgium) and payed 99 euros for the hotel - it has a similar price in the Belgian PM webshop: 101 euros. That's expensive but it's a pretty big building with some nice details and it comes with lots of accessories.

This is my haul  8-) I could choose four clickies to take home with my purchases, because of some special deal in the store. That was a nice bonus. I got a Roman soldier for Dimitris, a gardener with plant, a pirate with one leg and what looks like a hobo with a cool hat (it has wholes in it).

The bell-boy has a very nice cart that would fit with the Victorian theme as well IMO

The cleaning lady has a pretty uniform and I like all the accessories (vacuum cleaner, iron, foldable ironing board, a device to unplug the toilet  ;D)

The hotel shop (5268) is my favourite set: so many trinkets! I've never seen these postcards before and the deck of cards is a very useful item. It comes with a enormous amount of coins (must be a lucrative business  :)). I forgot to take pictures of all the items inside, but I'll post some photos later of the hotel fully furnished.

And then the huge system-X building... The box says it takes 90 minutes to assemble it, and that is a lie. It took me over two hours and my fingers are still a bit sore from pushing a hundred white plastic pieces into a hundred tiny little holes. Such fun, such fun!

Luckily it looks amazing, especially from the outside.

And then there was another floor to assemble   ;D I couldn't resist taking the extra floor. My clicky town is now ready to accommodate the rich and famous. Don't you just love the bottle of champagne and the golf clubs? Don't like the rock star clicky, though.

A very nice touch: if you'd want to add even more stories to the building, you could use the extra stickers with room numbers reaching up to 501.

And this is what it looks like in full:

I'm very happy with my purchases and the hotel will fit in perfectly with a beach or holiday diorama. The only negative things is the colour: I don't like the pink walls, beds and carpets. Has anyone ever stayed in a hotel with Barbie-pink beds?
And I didn't use some of the stickers: no pink logo, to keep the counter and reception desk more versatile. And no stone-type floor stickers in the bathrooms. They look odd, IMO.

I like it, not the colors but the overall design look of the hotel. Thanks for sharing.

Here are some pictures of the inside of the hotel.

The pool is something I've wanted for quite a while, and I decided that a hotel like that simply needs a pool to go with it. Welcome to my very first Speedo-dad clicky

The breakfast room looks great with those big windows and the buffet layed out. I really like the capuccino machine (hadn't noticed it on the box). For some reason, there was only one table for two clickies. I thought that was a bit sad for the family of four in room 101  ::) I managed to squeeze another table in there, using smaller ones from the rooms upstairs.

I really like the blonde cleaning lady's hairdo. In this photo you can see the shop as well.

Rooms 101 and 102:

And the master suite:

Oh, I hadn't mentioned the elevator before. It works, but it's open on one side and it has no roof.

Oh, this is so awesome, Birdie! Wow, what a treat. :o Thanks for all the really great pics of the details. The capuccino machine is fantastic, I hadn't noticed either! Nice touch! The pink is really annoying of course. ::) I will probably be using some paint on the roof pieces and the bedframes to de-Barbie-fy it. And I'm the same way with stickers as you, I save them but I never use them. They make it harder to re-purpose pieces. Nice to see the pool put with it, too, that's a must for any hotel, for sure.

One question, the maid that comes with the maid set, with the black hair... does she have the slightly darker skin tone like some of the women in the new F?gures? She looks a bit darker to me.

Great review Birdie - I love all of this, despite the colour
It will definitely be on the Christmas list.
One thing I do find strange though are the large windows in the bathroom!  :o

Congrats with your purchase, and thanks for sharing pics!

Totally not my league this theme, but I do have a question about the rockstar-guy in the hotel-set:

I see in your picture the figure has no rolled-up black sleeves as shown on the box and other official pics, but standard black short-sleeves... I assume he came like this, and you haven't customized him already?

Such a change from rolled-up to short sleeves - as opposed to the pics - was also the case with a male figure from the Hotel-bus, as I've read on Klickywelt
So, it seems it is probably not a one-off production-mistake, but it is an intended difference. Maybe to save a bit of plastic? Though the strap-with-button sleeves aren't completely right for klickies in historical scenes, I preferred them over the short sleeves for such use...
Or maybe Geobra is changing the mould to rolled-up sleeves without the strap-with-button, and so meanwhile they're equipping figures in a few sets with short sleeves??  ???  :crossed:

One thing I do find strange though are the large windows in the bathroom!  :o

Well, that's all the rage around here, but not in hotels! Every house built for the last 20 years has a picture window over the master bathtub, and it isn't fashionable to cover them.

Thanks for all the wonderful pictures, I like it more and more but will seriously consider painting it a neutral color so its not quite so SF

Thanks a lot everyone! I had a lot of fun doing the review  :)

@ Bonnie: There are several clickies with a slightly darker skin tone in these sets:

The guy on the left is wearing a shirt with fluorescent orange stripes (instead of the red stripes as shown on the box). It looks aweful
And Hadoque is right about the sleeves of the rockstar clicky. No rolled up sleeves, just short ones.

The roled up sleeves would have looked a lot better, but since I dislike his outfit entirely, I don't really mind.

@ Elaine: There's also a window in front of the showers  8} I've tried moving the bathroom furniture around, but it only works with the tub in front of the window. Let's assume there's nothing but the open sea ahead  :)

Wow they certainly seem to be good value sets very well equipped hotel, like the way you've set it up particularly the gift shop and the use of the pool outside, I agree that the colours wouldn't be my first choice but, they don't look to bad with this set. Looks like it comes with some great Klickies as well I've got to say that inspite of the brghtness I quite like the look of the guy in the brightly coloured shirt  :)

Pink color aside, it looks fantastic. Great theme indeed.
It's nice that they included tanned klickies to push the idea of a sunny vacation spot even further.
The accessories could be useful with many other sets.
Bummer about the rolled up sleeves becoming regular short sleeve.

Thank you for your detailed review.

Great looking hotel, aside from the colors.  :)

Just needs to be recolored, be called the cocoanuts hotel and have a clicky for all the marx brothers added to it.    Then you can replay the classic scenes of that movie.

This theme is awesome!!!!!The price is normal, because hotel is fully furnished!!!!!I want to ask another thing!Railings on the balcony are System X?Is it possible walls to be used instead railings,to make the rooms bigger (which means that doors will be removed and replaced with walls) and supposing you have extra system x-parts!

About this,do you know if it's possible or you have tested it???????

Well, you need the gift shop set to create a gift shop for your zoo, and then you need to buy the big hotel set because it has micro animals you could sell in the gift shop. ;D Then once you have that set, you might as well buy the others, and use the klickys as visitors for your zoo. That's what I would do. ;)

Well, my reasons for purchase, in order of importance:

1) It looks sweet!
2) I have a birthday coming up.
3) The cold and the coming winter make me gloomy: buying a PM hotel is cheaper than booking a flight to the nearest sunny location.

But what bonnie said works too  ;D

@ retronio22: If you remove the railing, there are several empty holes, so it should be possible to put walls there. But I think it will be a bit tricky: you would have to find enough wall pieces that fit neatly around the edges of the base plate. Most corners are not 90°. And there's the elevator to consider: there's a hole in the baseplate where the elevator is supposed to be.
If you would replace the doors and if you had enough white wall pieces, it could work. And then you could use it as a house as well... Interesting idea  :)
But then you would have a lot of holes in the floor of your house.

Yes, Birdie, this I mean (supposing to buy also 1-2 extension floors). It's a good idea to convert it into an exotic house! In the reception room to put kitchen, and in the living/dining room to put sofa,tv set etc!The holes can be covered by putting carpets inside the house!!!!!

thank you for the very nice review, Birdie. You seriously got me into actually considering buying this set!! At first, I wasn't so thrilled about the color, but now when I think of it, it will be good to have a seedy hotel in my little klicky town. I mean, I never noticed a hip and trendy hotel in a small town, so that won't be too big of a problem. But since I'm a student the price of the box will unfortunately be a small obstacle...

That's actually a really good idea. Put two twin beds in each room, old-style tube TVs, mis-matched furniture, have desks in each room with laptops and open books. Leave the tile stickers off in the bathrooms so they don't look up to date. Better yet, just have one shared bathroom per floor if it can be arranged that way. No palm trees out front but instead some boring bushes.

Your whole medieval setup could be one of those ''living museums'' where people dress up as medieval people. Then you could have the hotel outside for tourists.  ;)

That's a great idea, Viviana! Looking forward to see how it turns out.

I also liked retronio's idea to turn it into a big house. I've tried moving the walls to the edges of the baseplate - leaving out the balconies - but it proved to be very tricky.

I love the skaters, except for the stupid legs...  That skate park has been smiling at me whenever I go to London.

Wow, I missed this.  Thanks for the great review Birdie.  I LOVE this hotel after seeing it like this.  There are so many cool accessories and klickies.  I really like the bellboy and luggage and the champagne bottle.

I totally missed that the cards have been slipped in this theme. Looking at the pictures on the DB it only shows the playing side but I wanted to know what color the deck is? The last deck was green

It's green too, it's the exact same deck as in other, older sets.

Darn, I have many and even some still on the spruces. I would have liked red or blue for variety but I am not complaining as I will still get more of them. It seems the gift shop is a smaller set and easy enough to buy many of it seeing as the other parts in it are also very useful to us. Ordering from DS is so hit or miss in the US and then some other damn collector will clean out the warehouse anyways

It's a great little set, and even has 2 unique animal variations in it. I will probably get 2 or 3 for a zoo giftshop

Yes, I was thinking of making some improvements to my giftshop with them too. On the other hand, I may let mine stay one-of-a-kind like it is. In any case I will buy several of this set!

I find it interesting that you can download the instructions for building the hotel on the US PM site, but it is not up for sale here yet.  Is this true with other sets not yet available here?  :hmm:

Yes. I'm fairly certain the instructions on all the individual sites are only stored in one location. You can tell by the German fields in the addresses.

Well, whoever is in charge of the translations.. must be a machine. The portuguese site is a mesh of portuguese, brazilian and spanish. The catalogs the same. I find it a disgrace and an insult... Though we're used to it... unfortunately, playmobil is not alone in this.

Most companies won't shell out the money for actual translators, particularly once you get away from the main 2-3 languages they operate in.

2) the set comes with a mousse     Is it her pet? is it a rat infested hotel?  what's the deal? I don't think it's her job to get rid of those invaders.

The mouse is a very realistic addition and I was glad they included it, just go ask your local pest controll about them and coachroaches in hotels and restaurants. They probably added bed bugs too but they are so small you missed them

Yes, I love that there's a mouse! Hate to think of them in hotels I stay in, though. :o As for cockroaches, I've seen those a few times, but the worst is various times I've been to the Dallas area, at a certain time of year there is like a plague of crickets. They're EVERYWHERE, so it's hardly surprising they are in all the hotels. Not very pleasant, though. I hate those things.

That mouse is funny indeed :) Will get the hotel in a few days, can't wait. Also, I have noticed the additional floor you can buy via ds on the German website... Unfortunately, not on the dutch website, do you think I'll be able to buy at the fun park shop? Oh, it's this one:

Ooooh, hadn't seen this one yet  8-) I might have to get me one of those in a while.

If I understand correctly, you should be able to get anything that's currently on the market at the Fun Park shop, including DS. But I haven't tested this claim yet...

Like all extra floor, I imagine that it will become available online as the Hotel series become available in our respective countries.

I like the idea of the busy maid having a little mouse friend.

Probably not too much, if you look at a typical toy store or sales area here in the US there is a really distinct demarcation between boys and girls toys, with anything aimed at girls being heavy on the pink. I don't know quite why toys seem to be becoming more sexist. Disney influence?

I have purchased the hotel, kids disco, housekeeping set and bell boy but don't plan to assemble it until I have the penthouse, extra floor and the rest of the sets.

I was wondering if it would be possible to use the lighting set designed for the grande mansion in the hotel.

I have always wanted to light my Playmobil buildings but the price of the lighting sets has put me off, especially the one for the suburban house. I really must get the two lighting sets for my suburban house, plus an extra add on set as I have the fully extended house, but it would cost over £100 for all the sets :omg

I will have to bite the bullet and get them before they're discontinued as I always regretted not getting the lighting set for the previous suburban house.

I was wondering if anybody knows if it is possible to add two of these hotels together? I have seen in the pcc that someone took the shopping center and made one elongated one and it looks way better in my opinion. I would like to make this hotel wider so it does not end up being a 6 story tooth pick of a building. Something with a bigger footprint would look better 4 stories high.

If the elevator was removed could 2 hotels be fitted together ?

It would be difficult, because the shape of the base plates limits your options.
There's a gap in the base plate, for the elevator. If you take out the elevator, you could put another hotel there, but then it would be set back, not aligning with the front of the first hotel.

You'd also have a problem with the balconies. They stick out. I think all you would be able to manage is what would look like two hotels put next to each other.
But hey, prove me wrong ;D I'd love to see a huge hotel like that.
