Ok, I have to start by saying that it has been a really long time since I have fallen in love with a playmobil set the way I instantly fell in love with this one the second I started putting it together. The wagon itself was AMAZING. THe first playmobil set I ever had was a covered wagon, and it was love at first sight. I don't think I ever have been so awed by another set until today! Maybe I just have a thing for covered wagons. But I think the design of this wagon is the best thing I have seen from playmobil in a long time! It's really really really cool!!!
Anyway, enough talk, here's some pics. ;)

First the bad guys
(http://i800.photobucket.com/albums/yy289/bonniebeth2/100_0272.jpg)
And a back view. The one problem I had with this set was I got two right spurs. :( Too bad, too, because I LOVE the spurs! So happy to have spurs that fit on newer style feet!
I had to show a pic of this guy without his belt and bandana so you can see the printing. I think it is the first time we have had a chinese face with an eyepatch? And I think the torso print is really nice.
And the good guys. Love the print on the guy on the left, and I got an extra bandana like his. Also love the chaps on the other guy.
And the back view. Love the fringe!
And a shot of his hat.... and hairy chest. :P
(http://i800.photobucket.com/albums/yy289/bonniebeth2/100_0281.jpg)
The horses...
And on to the wagon itself!   I'll start with the one thing I don't like about this set, the blue whip. ::) And btw, the whip felt cheaply made compared to the older whips. But the new barrels on the side are great, and notice the holes in the cover, for flaming arrows.
a back view, showing the new bucket.
A front view
(http://i800.photobucket.com/albums/yy289/bonniebeth2/100_0288.jpg)
I absolutely love the spring seat
(http://i800.photobucket.com/albums/yy289/bonniebeth2/100_0289.jpg)
And it does lift up and has a nice storage compartment under it.
There's a gun rack on the back of the seat, and a place for a spare wheel! I was very surprised by these features.
But I think the best surprise was the compartments under the floor of the wagon! I had no idea this wagon had that, it doesn't show in any of the pictures online.
A perfect spot for hiding away some bags of gold.
There's also a tailgate that really opens on this one.
And this was great news to me. The old-style wagon cover fits! It's a bit of a tight fit, but I got it on there. So it will be easier to vary the look a bit.
Some of the accessories that came with it, love the new barrels!
And the munitions box
(http://i800.photobucket.com/albums/yy289/bonniebeth2/100_0298.jpg)
And an overview of the set.
I'm absolutely wild about this new wagon! :inlove: I want lots and lots more. I definitely recommend this set!

Nice set! Every day I think I am getting closer to starting into the Western theme. 8}
-
This is a great set, Bonnie. I love the wagon and all of its little details that you showed.
Would the harness fit the Noriker horses too? :hmm:
Joe
-
Thanks for the comprehensive look at this set! Now I want it even more!
-
what a great set, I need to get so many of these   :apple: :cowboy: :indian: :confetti: :woohoo:
Thank you so much for the great review of what look to be one of the best new sets in the theme :**:
-
Another great western set! Love the klickies and those floor compartments. My super minor complaint would be 1848 plastered on everything.
Thanks for the review BB!
-
Glad I could convince some people they need this set. ;D
Would the harness fit the Noriker horses too? :hmm:
I don't think so. I haven't actually tried, but I tried a saddle from this style of horse on the noriker the other day, and it didn't fit. There are harnesses for the norikers in this set: http://store.playmobilusa.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-US-Site/en_US/Product-Show?pid=5249&cgid=Western though they are blue. :hmm: I think I would take these two with their harnesses and hitch them to this wagon.
My super minor complaint would be 1848 plastered on everything.
I totally agree. I hate having anything printed on, because it ruins the versatility of the item. Chris and I were noticing what I hadn't really thought about before, this theme is somewhat centered around the California gold rush. Est. 1848 is written on everything, with pictures of pick axes, so it would be the gold mining company that was established in 1848, right at the start of the gold rush.

Oh bb you are killing me!!!!
This is a fantastic set!!!! I wonder why they keep making bandits, sheriffs and soldiers..... where is the common people?? ::)

this was the WILD WEST the only other people were indians
-
Yeah, I'd love to see some women and especially children, since there were very few kids in the original western series even, but at least these are some awesome men! And for a western town it does kind of work, because you would see men going into town for supplies and not bringing the wife and kids with them. But still there need to be some women and kids living in the town!
-
WOW!!!! From a designing point of view, that wagon is awesome!! So many compartments, so well designed sets and details like where the spare wheel goes make it seem so awesome!! I love this set!!! And the klickies look so great!!!
Thanks for the review and the pics, bb!!!
-
This is an awesome set, considering there are no knights inside! ;)
Wish the whip wasn't blue though!
The cowboy with the rolled-up sleeves is wonderful! Oh bb you are killing me!!!!

I guess by that time, you had to be one of those only! :)

This looks to be an outstanding set with some ground breaking features in design and manufacture, too, when you look at the versatility of the compartments in the wagon and printing - that check shirt is superb.
I share the reservations about the whip and the printing. I guess the whip and barrel ropes are made together for cost purposes and so have to be the same colour.
Maybe the holes in the cover are also for the occupants to shoot from when under attack.
EDIT: the printing will probbaly rub off without too much trouble or damaging the cover.
-
(thanks for another great review - my wallet is cursing you, btw)
Is that the original gunbelt on the first pic? They reverted to the ANCIENT ones? :o
Love the black ribbon on the hat and the printed chaps. Shame the shirt printings rarely include the back. Would be so much better (probably a lot more expensive too)
Hadn't really noticed the wagon is new.. A spare wheel? WOW. Seems really nice... the floor compartments look great. A very good thing the old cover fits :)
Must have one of those.. wheat bags? And the new barrel looks nice, but in brown please ;)
Agree regarding the blue whip and the printing.. they do LOVE their bright colors.
-
Anotehr great review bb , thanks !!!
Lovely set , so nice to see all the new features etc and i am so thrilled the wetsern is back !!! I love this wagon and klickies
Some old skool features are so welcomed and is great to see those very old parts still around !!!
-
Many thanks for the review bb.
It's a wonderful set, I like it very much  The wagon is fantastic with many new ideas of the old one. Great klickies too!!
Friendly George. :)
-
@playmofire: the barrel ropes are actually the same part as the canteen strap, so they are a rubbery type material. They would have been better in something besides blue too, but the canteen straps have always been blue, so I can see why at least.
@tahra: Yes! That is the original gunbelt, really nice to see it again. However, the new gunbelts, while they feel thinner and cheaper, the guns actually stay in them. The guns have never wanted to stay in the old ones and it's always driven me crazy! The ones from when I was a kid mostly eventually turned brittle and broke, too. :(
-
Great looking set, the wagon compartments add a whole new play level to it. Thanks for the review Bonnie
-
Some great clickies in there, all of them could be used as regular cowboys and townspeople it seems. I really like that clicky with the rolled up sleeves. :)
Those storage compartments does give me the idea that the two appearantly innocent cowboys could possibly be smugglers though.
A question about those barrel holders, could a clicky sit there as well with that seatbelt around his waist? a shame its blue, brown or black would have been better.
-
Wow great set that wagon is awesome with the hidden compartments the accessories are also great really like the look of it, like the whole fele of the bandit with the eyepatch not so sure about the other fella, like the 2nd pair cool shirt with the hairy chest as well, love the guy with the rolled up checked shirt :)
-
Good review, bb. :)
I read a smilar report on KW and got me this set too. ;)
The wagon is great and my intention is to use it in late 18th century scenes.
I also like the one-eyed bandit, though I'm not really a Western-fan (anymore. I used to buy & play with playmo-western as a kid.)
A question about such wagons:
In contrast with the previous covered wagon, this one has - as you pointed out - a springfeathered seat.
When did such springs got introduced on wagons?
I ask to know if the wagon could be used accurately for earlier historical scenes ,and even medieval ones. The old version was very often used by people in medieval dioramas as well, but I can't imagine that a spring-equipped wagon would be realsitic for Medieval times, I think such springs were a much later development.
-
You are right, Erwin, sprung seat was a development well after mediaeval times. Indeed, the use of springs of this type on axles was, I think, around the late 18th century. On a recent TV programme there was a reference to this as it wasn't until there were light, sprung carts available that horse-drawn artillery could operate effectively.

saw it at TRU today, I passed for now, it was $40 :hmm: ouch... when you want to buy a dozen. I will impatiently wait till a nice sale comes around
-
Thanks for sharing. This set is awesome. I will look for kt this weekend. I did buy the US Calvary set last week but didn't see this one.
-
Nice looking wagon. I might have to get one myself. :cowboy:
-
Whenever I see covered wagons I keep thinking of a certain disney cartoon where goofy cowboys are attacked by goofy indians. :cowboy: :indian:
-
Oh, this wagon looks great, as do the klickies!!
Thanks for the review!

thanks for the super photos bb! and PF for kicking up this thread again, completely missed it. ..and very interesting question and discussion on the time line for spring seats and axles guys!
-
Thanks for the review and photos, bonniebeth. :) As I already have a couple covered wagons, I was thinking I could bypass this set and just order the klickies from DS, but seeing that it's a new wagon entirely, I think I'll have to purchase it. :cowboy:
As for the sprung seat, Erwin, I recall springs being introduced into coaches sometime in the 18th century.
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coach_%28carriage%29
In the eighteenth century steel springs were substituted, an improvement in suspension. An advertisement in the Edinburgh Courant for 1754 reads:
The Edinburgh stage-coach, for the better accommodation of passengers, will be altered to a new genteel two-end glass coach-machine, hung on steel springs, exceedingly light and easy...

I'm not into western, but your review makes me want to get that wagon. ;D
The cowboy with the checkered shirt is pretty cool. I really like that they slightly modified the classic Playmobil haircut to add more movement in the hair.
-
I picked this set up when it was on sale at TRU and set it aside until yesterday. Now that I've opened and put it together I love it even more than I thought I would. I like the figures, the wagon, and even like this style of horse in this case. The rock is a different color than has been produced previously. I like the color better than the last try at a light tan they did.
The bad guy with the grey hat - am I the only one that thinks he looks like Billy the Kid? The Black Bart type figure is great, but I wonder if he is actually Chinese, or is just squinting? Could be either one. Would fit well with a Kung Fu diorama/story.
I like this set so much it's making me want the mine set now too, and I had been thinking I could avoid that one and just order the donkey separately.

I opened my new covered wagon today (was waiting for pictures to move from camera to hard drive). I would not normally buy Western Theme, in fact, this one was purchased for me, but as I put the wagon together, I did like it. However, the pictures on the package show 3rd generation horses (2nd generation colours, but with more movement in the legs and manes) but I received 2nd generation horses. This is not a real problem for me, as I am fine with 2nd generation horses, but others may be concerned.
Has anyone else encountered this with newer sets, where the packgage displays one thing, but something else is actually in the box?
Thank you.

I'm sure I've read on here about someone/somepeople getting the same thing (earlier versions of horses and NOT the ones pictured on the box). I do not recall what happened, but I believe they were going to contact the company about it.

It happened the same to me, just now. :'( :'( :'( :'(
Im so dissapointed.
Did someone get the REAL horses from Geobra after complaining? Should I bother?
-
There was a thread on Klickywelt exactly about this; several people in Germany also getting the old (2nd gen) horses in this set instead of the new (3rd gen) ones.
After contacting the customers department, they got the right horses send over to them.
For getting the right ones you'll have to have kept your purchase ticket/invoice.

even if it was in a toy store in Argentina?? ???

I'm not sure how it works in Argentina, but here you have to prove you bought a set before DS will send you free replacements parts for it. If you're paying for the parts, then no proof is needed of course.

ok thanks!!! :)
i'll give it a try :crossed:

When my dino came with the missing teeth (in the PROCESS somewhere), I sent a couple of pics (the dino, and him with his "brothers") - there was no problem at all, they sent me a dino. Of course, it was somehow a different situation - it was easy to see the poor guy was toothless.

Thanks again for this review, Bonniebeth! I never realised how great it was until I saw your pictures and all the hidden treasures :)
I was able to get my own wagon a few weeks ago and I love it.
