I guess they changed it bc oriental eyes must have been more complicated to manufacture with the molded-in eye base, maybe?
I'd like to know the answer too, I don't want to have exhausted-looking klickies :)

Yes, but I have seen photo stories where seriously injured klickys had their eyes closed, and weren't smiling.  :'(
