I have to admit I regret buying this set...
But, there are some good, useful parts in it... certainly not worth it for 49,99 euros though :(
(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x335/Baldthar/5919/DSC03208.jpg)
First of all, the sail is horrible!!! To a kid whose parent have bought this set might look awesome and adventurous but not to the adult collector...
The ''fort'' (   ) looks more like an abandoned little warehouse, a small room where tools for fixing boats were kept... but it has three interesting pieces:
the spiderweb window,
(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x335/Baldthar/5919/DSC03211.jpg)
the rock formation as its side, and the wooden railing at the back...
Lastly, and since there is not much to say about the set...
the soldier klickies are very useful!!! Either for customising or used as is... but the pirates... (how on earth two pirates attack a small ''fort'' guarded by three soldiers and a big bertha cannon    Hilarious lttle set!) they are the same as the ones in 5869 - Red Corsair (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=5869) ... and the captain has been used in a blisterpack as well...
Maybe this is another good example that playmobil wants to get rid of stock by creating these exclusive sets... But then again, the smell of the plastic is so fresh... it indicates that these pieces have just come off the production line... unless those littel bags in which klickies parts and accessories are sealed are keeping them fresh...
So if somebody wants parts from this set, better get them from DS ;D

I really like the pirate's legs... The one in shorts.. But that torso is quite common. <sigh>

Actually I hate those kinds of legs... even in the new english officers... the look like little boys... at least the ones on 4654 - Pirate (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4654) dont look that bad...
And yes that torso is common... I so would like to see the one that is similar to this one but has no red stripers 3791 - Pirate And Water Barrel (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3791)
-
PM have gotten a bit lazy. They never produced such English soldiers with the fat klicky mold. I liked the Spanish sets from the last theme precisely because there was a fat one among them, which made them look a bit less samey to me. I dont mind the legs. Better those than a peg leg.
-
PM have gotten a bit lazy.
Unfortunately, that has been going on for YEARS. When the viking theme came out I bought everything (duh). I remember when I got to the ship, most guys were FREAKIN REPEATS! It's plain stupid, IMO.
And I'm not talking because we had bought add ons, no.. they were repeats within the CURRENT THEME.
Same with some guys that appear a bunch of times... That fat wolf knight (not you Panos!)/bandit being one of them.
Gods, can you imagine having the possibilities they have, and come up with the same guys over and over again? (or some others that I think must have been made by a color blind 10 year old, but that's something else).
-
Nice review, Panos :yup:! When you said that the fort looks like an abandoned little warehouse, it made me laugh !
Ace :brownhair:
-
This is a strange, hodge-podge little set. Looks very much like american exclusive sets usually look. ::) Thanks for the review!
-
Bad set IMO ::).
The latrine fort could be of use, but that sail is absolutely ridiculous (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/luwerner/gif/hittinghead.gif).
Do you think you can remove the skull?
-
Thanks for the review Panos. The fort is also included in a TRU exclusive here so the whole thing is repeats (except for the colors of the gunboat).
5782 - Pirate's Hideout (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?set=5782)
-
How much does it cost?
When all is said and done, 6 klickies, a building and a boat (plus a decent amount of parts) is quite reasonable. Especially keeping in mind that the new island/ship only comes with 3/4 klickies and costs so much.
(for 90 euro+ i would expect a lot more klickies/accessories!)
-
According to Panos it cost 50 Euros. Panos, I need a closer look at the Green Dragon Knight army I see in the background. . .
-
WOW! WOW! WOW!!! Please tell me this is a new set! :D
I don't care for the whole set... I have one of the forts... it is as bad as it looks.
But the French soldiers and captain would be sooooo useful! :o
Thanks for the review, I do like the klickies for it. ;D

It cost him 50 euro I think. If its a US product it probably costs less.
-
Do you think you can remove the skull?
nope! I tried removing a pattern from another sail, and although i did fade, it was not removed at all :( But hey, when the time comes I can order the parts from ds to make this ship a 5140 ;D

5782 - Pirate's Hideout (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?set=5782)
hm... no wonder it looked familiar...
Panos, I need a closer look at the Green Dragon Knight army I see in the background. . .
All in good time ;)
And yes the set costs 50 euros, which is too much I think for what's in the box... then again just a 4444 costed 20 euros so it might be an alright price... Playmobil are so expensive in Greece :(
-
Not only in GReece. I did tell you in here that the Western Takealong + the new stagecoach cost me around 64 euro from PM Malta :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Yes tahra, what they did with the vikings was aweful... some were used in other sets too... being pirates or medieval folk :-\ and that fat wolf knight warlord was turned into a fat red dragon guard :( I tried many variations with all of them, especially the vikings, but its hard to customise new ones because of their colour

64? :o :o :o thats too much! I wonder how much playmobil hellas will be selling it in the following weeks to come
---edit---
on second thought, around 20 euros for the stage coach and 40 for the carry along is no that bad :-\

It's a bummer - it's true. But with the vikings etc at least they DID swap some accessories around: a different hat here, a different cape there. In the 90s - we call it the golden age of PM - it was even worse. You got two IDENTICAL fleur de lys soldiers in two different sets, and there were other examples!

well, i dont mind uniformity in a medieval guard, on the contrary if i get different medieval soldier i turn them into a uniform army, but I do mind with vikings, pirates, medieval folk...this guy for example,30 00 7040 - Pirate, short red beard, green coat (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30%2000%207040) he is a viking and a pirate 8}
And look at this klicky 30 13 0700 - Chieftain of the Wolf Clan (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30%2013%200700) how similar he is with this one 30 13 0770 - Dragon Catapult operator, brown hair and beard, eyepatch (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-13-0770) used twice and on different roles in the theme ::)

At least he has a cool torso that can be combines with other pants/legs arms etc to make some nifty villagers... provided of course that you have some other use for 1000 pairs of red pants :)
-
True ... true.
-
not sure i like the greenish deck of the boat. does it glow in the dark? (would seem to be better used as a ghost ship version).
the only thing that bugs me is the pirate has medieval shoulder sleeves. Maybe the pirate just came from a Renn Faire?
The fort appears to be a simple tower from a system x castle. At least it has a working door on it that can be used for parts. My Knights Empire Castle towers have no doors on them whatsoever....I wonder if it would fit over the recently debated Castle bathroom wall?

Yeah I prefer the brown decks as well, Atto. The sleeves are more roman-like than medieval. I hate playmobil using these slevesn throughout their themes... Pirates, roman, knights... come on!!! ::)
Yes the little system x dungeon/fort/latrine  can be used on the Knights Empire Castle.
-
Think of them as stripped sleeves that have been rolled up. :)
-
Think of them as stripped sleeves that have been rolled up. :)
Sorry I cant'. You know me, I operate in specific and strict parameters  I have a huge pile of them unused... I've only kept the ones on te green dragonland knights, and that only for archers and pikemen.
-
Not so much a fort, more a coastal lookout post/tower which can be used as a signal/warning station of a pirate attack and maybe delay their landing while reinforcements arrive.

thats the most logical suggestion Gordon!!!

I love this set :'(
-
....... provided of course that you have some other use for 1000 pairs of red pants :)
is it only me who has got any use for legs with bright red boots? (I cant make any napoleonic drummers because I have no drums, even then how many drummers can one have when his napoleonic armies are very small :P )
I hope its ok to ask this here instead of starting another thread;
"what do you do with, say 10 pairs of PM legs wearing bright red boots?"
-
That was a question I myself was trying to figure out earlier today.
Since I chose instead to do something different,
You may safely assume I did not come up with anything I liked... ::)
However, if you are not limited to the Napoleonic theme,
Make a unit of knights. ;D
-
"what do you do with, say 10 pairs of PM legs wearing bright red boots?"
i really have no idea... i dont like, appart from the one and only pair of legs thats is whita and the boots are red and that specific pair of legs matches a king klicky...
-
Sorry Panos, I don't mean to bug you,
But I am afraid my reply a while back got mixed up and you didn't read it.
I had asked if this set was new,
but after looking for it on Playmobil and not finding it,
do I assume it is not? ???

You did? I cant find it :-\ maybe I got up too early
Its a new set yes, and there is a suspition that its an exclusive for the Athens Funpark, but I am not 100% sure.

Great News!!! :D :D :D
That might mean I could get old French soldiers from DS!

Not when you could get them from ebay for 40 euro the two of them, postage included! I always used to think that Malta was as cheap as Germany when it came to PM, but not anymore. There's been a price hike in the last year or so, and now prices are more on a par with the rest of continental Europe (France, Belgium etc).

Yes I got that deal from ebay too, thre or so months ago. thank goodness for the sensibility of some sellers.
So you are saying that its the same price for products nowadays for all products throughout Europe...

It's not the same - prices may vary from country to country and withing the same country according to the shop ... but I don't see that much of a difference anymore. Specials in Malta were still selling for 2 euro (sometimes 1.99) until very very recently, whereas theyve been selling for 2 50 in Belgium for quite a while. Now theyre 2.25 I think from Malta. Or maybe they just went crazy with the western stuff. I don't know. Id really like to send them an email but theres only a generic address on the website. Id like to ask them why Malta doesnt have a dedicated PM website for example ... I mean even POLAND has one for crying out loud!

I see. There are variations depending on import tax, vat etc too... so its only logical for variation of the prices... tou can find specials here for anything between 1.99 and 2.65 :-\
-
WoT, I put an DS order in to PM last Friday for bluecoats. I'll let you know if they come through.
Also I believe that Tahra saw this set at Cortes Ingles so it is not a funpark exclusive.
Specials in Canada cost between 2.50 and 2.90 Euros.

In itself this is not a bad little set, I prefer these soldiers to the dreadful red boots, and I can forgive the Roman arms on the pirate, treating them as ragged cut-off, though there are of course cut-off and ragged sleeves available which would have looked better. The sail is ridiculous, but it's easy enough to get a roll of material from a craft shop and replace it, using the original sail as a template.
What bugs me crazy, boggles my mind completely, has me hitting my head repeatedly on the desk, is the mixture of Steck, System X and System Why? (my new name for the clip system) currently in use in the Pirate theme. Don't Playmobil think kids might get more than one different Pirate set, and want to be able to combine them?
Right now on Playmobil US's website you can buy two pirate buildings, one Steck, one System X, plus the 5949 Bastion (Steck-based) and the Lighthouse (System Why?). This set, if it comes to the US, is System X. The new Harbor Fort is System Why? . You can't extend system Why? with anything, and you can't easily mix Steck and system X, so the Soldiers are forever condemned to defending tiny one room buildings like this dilapidated shed.
Forts in the West Indies and on the Spanish Main (and many other places as we have discussed before) were bigger then most Medieval Castles, and had bigger standing garrisons. Why can't Playmobil create a decent-sized fort for the soldiers? It doesn't have to be huge, but at least as big as a large castle.
I recently saw two new (to me) Playmobil ships in TRU, and put them back on the shelf unpurchased. One had the red-booted soldiers (I may have to treat these as Dutch), the other was a pirate ship with an ugly skull sail. I rarely pass up a brand new set in a theme I like, but these just didn't add anything worth shelling out a combbined $55 for right now. I'll probably get them later when they go on sale or clearance, but right now I seem to be Playmobilled out.
Here's hoping the Spanish soldiers, and the blue-coated soldiers with white trousers and black shoes, are eventually available as add-ons. Then we can populate towns/forts with at least three different nations (albeit dressed centuries apart).

A very constructive argument Martin!
Martin, I meant to ask you for sometime now, what do you think of these ''bluecoats'' with red pants and black boots as they were issued in 3111 - Royal Artillery (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3111) ?
-
(...) System Why? (my new name for the clip system) (...)
Can I adopt that? Can I Can I CAN I?
(it's BRILLIANT!)

i have several bue guys.... i assume playmobil intended them as british soldiers, but their overall scheme reminds me more of early 19th century french:
anyone aware of a more fitting british quivelent? perhaps 18th century? If one exists, it currently eludes my knowledge.
mostly, IMO the playmo bluecoats look most like 19th century American Bluecoat Continentals:
-
I always thought that the bluecoats represented the French. Right colors and the flags included with them had a Fleur de Lys on them.

that would make sense considering playmobil has obviously english redcoats and british naval officers, so they need someone to fight (in addition to pirates). sort of odd though because some sets come with both, don't they? but then again, playmobil doesn't specifically assert country designations, does it? (even though we can usually tell who they are suppossed to represent most likely). Although the latest ships do bare the union jack flag. (maybe there are other flags I just don't recognize).
-
No set comes with both redcoats and ''bluecoats''. The uniform certainly was intended for a french troop but as you have pointed out Atto it can also fit American Revolution uniform.

While we wait for Maritin's response . . .I have designated these as my Artillery and keep a small unit of them. I quite like the way they look even if they hae no basis in reality.

PM Canada got back to me today. My bluecoats are available and should be on their way soon. My order is tiny by PMFriends standards but still. Here is what I asked for and prices in Canadian dollars:

Naval Guard 30 00 8980 2 $2.85 $5.70
Black Hat 30 02 6020 13 $0.21 $2.73
Red Cuff 30 06 4980 26 $0.15 $3.90
Bayonet 30 07 0100 13 $0.15 $1.95
Rifle 30 22 5480 13 $0.25 $3.25
Shipping $8.00
Sub Total $42.63
HST $5.54
Total $48.17
Note that the 2nd Naval Guard only had limited availability although Stephanie at PM said they may have mre in 2 months (or longer).
-
Sounds exciting Ds dad!! ;D ;D have fun!!!
-
I will, already putting together a second ds list.
-
I guess these are french afterall; I just realized the flag that comes with this set is also a French Merchant Flag (blue field, white cross, small blue shield w/ 3 fleur de lis).
french reenactment of the battle of Pontesampaio against Spain early 19th century:
I do get confused though, because some late 18th/early 19th century french uniforms of this design look 99% the same as the late 18th century American Continental soldiers' uniforms. At the Playmobil level of detail the bluecoat clickies could totally be used for either one believably. EXCEPT the french uniforms of early 19th century had already phased out the tricorns (so playmobil's inclusion of tricorns isn't really accurate). It's suppossed to be more of a bicorn at this point.

Awesome! :wow: :wow: :wow:
Thanks for this, this is great! :D

I'm not Martin ;) but I'm using these bluecoats with the red trousers and black boots as my mid-18th century French army. This uniform isn't exactly historically correct, as the French army wore mostly light grey uniforms in a slightly different style and didn't wear boots at this time, but I'm okay with using this klicky until Playmobil introduces something better. I have my fingers crossed that they will make their new British redcoats in a light grey version with navy facings, waistcoat, and breeches. I like the red pants with the black boot better than the white trousers these klickies first came with.
As for this set, such a small structure seems absurd for a fort.
