Title: Playmobil castle 3666
Post by: Lindama on November 15, 2011, 02:16:27
My castle has arrived! It was indeed New In Box and I cant describe the feeling of seeing all of those sealed bags! As George suggested, I will do a review. It will take me a while though (work, children etc must intrude  ;) ).

Here are some shots of the unveiling..

The set was very well packaged.

The front of the box. Some of the original tapes securing it closed were still in place. I am unsure it it had ever been opened to look at the contents. There was a tear to the front, but the box was otherwise in good shape.

First peek inside. As you can see, the contents were unsecured, with larger pieces just randomly placed inside, however some wall pieces were held in compartments at either side. The building pieces were secured by elastic bands and the small parts were all in their sealed bags (except for one trunk!).

The set contains two carboard "drawers" - each holds a number of pieces. This photo is of the top drawer (jumbled unfortunately, as I was excited).

This is the second drawer.

Both drawers side by side.

:omg: Magnificent set, Lindama! Now that they are no longer produced, it's like the end of a dynasty! Thank you for showing us this true gem!

The 3666 indeed is one of a kind. It further has 8 klickies! 8, huit, eight, acht!!! Today none of the current sets in any theme has 8 klickies (the hospital has 7, the school has 9 but most of them are children). I think the last set with 8 klickies was the viking longship

In my eyes this castle would have looked even better if it had the green bull's eye glass windows.

Excellent review of the best set thatn playmobil has EVR created . i had the joy to buy 3 or 4 i am not sure 3666s new and eveytime opening this huge box was a great joy , i still recall my first in 1994 ...

The current castle line and the previous system x ones pale in comparison to the greatness of this set , the plastic quality is superb, the detailing is amazing, customisation and different designs possible, the round tower and the lowering gate were massive improvements over the previous aged steck castle that lasted from 1977-1993  has to be noted !!!! and the 3666 didnt do very bad in terms of life in the shops, especially when compared to the horrid system x castles and the current one that look like chinese doll houses if you ask me  :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

However as  a collector and steck enthusiast and havign a bit of steck quantity by now , i think the greatest achievement of the 3666 and the medieval sets of that time was that they linked and combined so well together , the heraldry made sense , the sets were associated very well with each other and the intro of magic and dragons into all this was a welcomed move by all . Never again has playmobil done so well in medieval sets . the silly ugly castles of today, the strange xmen like weapons and lights, the actual armour and siege machines are sooo unrealistic and out of proportion they might be selling but they are ugly and contemporary .

The 3666 is eternal !!!! :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow:

I guess you've never had the 3940's cannons in your hands  ;D

I know, I'm making the thread going off-topic, I just can't resist... ::)  :P

I got to agree with all the good things said about the 3666, I got mine last week finally after wanting it for 20 years.
There are just so many possibilities with it.. finding the flaws would be harder.

The only one I can think of is that the storage room under the living space is fully closed, it could have used an open wall so the inside could be played with.

Thanks for sharing.  Wouldn't it be cool if PM rereleased this set!  I have two so far.  Would love to get a new in the box one!

The 3666 is one of the great sets.  I am with Giorginetto on this - I think its the best.  It was a real thrill to get a boxed set.  I got it off e-bay for £50 about three years ago and it was close enough to collect so no postage.  It was virtually complete - missing just a couple of small accessories which I was able to replace.

(I have two 3940s and they are in a strong second place in my affections.)

Same here best thing ever made after sliced bread. (nothing beats sliced bread of course, good luck eating it whole. )

Theres just so many possibilities since this castle is not strictly millitairy. Probably the only playmobil castle ever released where only a quarter of the included clickies are soldiers or knights.

Exactly. I've thought about keep some special sets MISB, but the thrill of receiving the set pushes away any desire to keep it boxed. <*)

Thanks for sharing this gem again. On a side note, the only reason I have boxed playmo is because I haven't had time to open theme yet.

The 3666 was the first big set I ever bought for my sonand I, and it has a special place in my heart. Truly a great set. The world needs more Playmobil like this.

I have not yet opened any of the sealed packages. Part of me wants to keep the whole thing pristine but I have a little boy who doesn't know I have this and I think he would be thrilled to put it together with me - just waiting for the right moment.

Maybe after watching a movie or cartoon about medieval times?  Unless you plan to visit Europe sometimes to see a real castle.  :)

Man, the best set I never got...  Though I think the only piece (other than klickies) I don't have through the purchase of other steck sets and add-ons is the staircase...  Man, I want that staircase...    :'(  Nice purchase!!!

Wow!  very nice purchase with the box and everything!

Funny thing....I also was able to get my hands on this #3666 Knights set this week-end!  no box :'(, but I was so happy to get it and assemble it....

You'll have so much fun building it!  don't leave this gem in the box... Play with it and enjoy!

Boot gypsy, I bought it on eBay Australia and it was not cheap- all up I paid $260au, but as George would say, worth every cent! I subsequently bought two smaller castle sets on eBay.com and postage was more than the cost of the sets but also worth it! Keep searching eBay and you will find them listed and you might just get one for a good price.

I am dreaming of a re-released "super 3666":
instead of the house another one similar to the tavern including a balcony, chimney and double-arch, maybe a second building (museum style). Maybe also including the 3667 (small castle)... then a third building would be nice (bakery), and it could also include the rock tower...

Best,
HDL

It is a great set. I bought one last night locally via kijiji for $50 without the figures, though it did come with other knights, vikings even Romans!.  It was a bit dusty but I have cleaned it all off and set it up for the boys downstairs. It's our second one but after the fight over who owns the first one I'm happy to have two now.  (My older son even put all of his brother 123 klickies as a surprise).
For the debate between 3940 vs. 3666.  They are both the "Gold standard" of their respective catergories.  Like the 5300, for mansions or 3773/3806 for Western Forts.   I'm still partial to 3740 myself. (But I think more for the klickies).

This is my first and only castle.  I absolutely love it.  Had to buy that dang circular roof off of ebay and i'm still missing one or two wooden posts but all in all it looks fantastic.  I wish I had a bigger place so I could leave it set up all the time.

Anybody looking for a 3666, or any of the parts, should look on German e-bay. There are loads for sale. I recently got one for 41 euros.
