Title: Douglas DC3 / C47 Dakota
Post by: National Playmographic on April 10, 2016, 19:27:57
Hi everyone!

New (and probably long) project.. I've made up my mind to transform a 4310 passenger jet to a classic propeller plane.
As always, the process will be documented here. Ideas welcome!

 :o

First, some reference pics i'll use for the design/adaptation

(http://i.imgur.com/nfIqWkN.jpg)

Then some ideas and scale reference from blueprints.. seems this is going to be a complete overhaul of the playmobil flying machine

(http://i.imgur.com/mY546FV.jpg)

I'll keep you posted with the progress

A classic Dakota, that is once again a very interesting project!

Ideas welcome!

Maybe parts from the 5560 firefighting aircraft could be of some use, like (partly) the straight wing, the engines with the propellors, ... ?

Thanks mcruran and hadoque!

I gave the 5560 a thought, but afeter a moment I realized the engines are quite bigger than those and probably have to be built from scratch. For the propellers i'll be using triple ones (from a 5916 chopper), and 5560's are double.

I'll try to post the first pictures later today.
Cheers!

This is going to be the most difficult part, the fuselage and wing joint... ideas welcome

I assume you´re going to shorten the propellors? (otherwise it would look too much like a V-22 tiltrotor-aircraft)
The fuselage-wing joint indeed seems the most challenging issue...

Yep, the propellers will be properly shortened and rounded of course! In fact, if you closely inspect the last pic, there's a mark with the intended length on the inner blade.

I'm also looking for a playmo part for the landing gear resembling this. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot everyone for your kind comments

Could be a nice homage, but no... it'll be an adventure plane, three or four seater cabin and lots of cargo space, ala Indiana Jones, for our National Playmographic Society

Some progress btw...  Still no luck with the piece for the landing gear-- Ideas??

with the motor cycle cylinders! :)9

@Jimbo   Thnx mate!  :wave:

Some progress, this project is developing slowly but surely  8}

Rounded doors, there will be one extra door inscribed into the cargo door, opened independently, with stairs and rope rails

Some progress pics for you to evaluate and comment...
Bit of trial and error with the wings, it's the first time I build something so difficult  8}
I'm quite happy with the engines result, so much work left!

(http://i.imgur.com/Qc8o9bE.jpg)

This solution is no good, the threaded rod is too high and crosses the cabin

(http://i.imgur.com/myKI7jk.jpg)

This one a bit better but still no... will close the holes afterwards...

National Playmographic,

Love the aircraft so far, one observation, I am assuming that the rear most window will be removed and filled in as the DC-3 only had 7 and I count 8 on yours?

Cheers,
James

Der Anfang schaut mehr als verheißungsvoll aus. Ich hoffe, die Luftfahrtgesellschaft ist nicht pleite gegangen und wir werden hier noch weitere Bilder zu sehen bekommen!

A very promising start! Hope that airline didn't crash (financially) so we're going to see some more pics of that great project.
