Hello Cachalote

Not the easiest thing to identify even with the choices covering a 5 year span  ???

For me it would be like asking what child do I like best ? They each have such special characteristics how is one to decide.

I so far have it narrowed down to three choices .

79-83, 84-88 & 89-93.
If you hear the sound of the bell which will tell you that Grigori has been killed, if it was your relations who have wrought my death, then no one in the family will remain alive. They will be killed by the Russian people. :prays:

Hi Cachalote,
That is one tough question 8}. Like you and Richard, I have favorites
in each time frame.

It was great seeing the old pictures though. :yup:

Pondering for a while....

How very strange as I thought that selecting 1989-1993 would put me in a "minority" but it actually leads the way ???

I was only thinking about the Victorian Theme but it seems that other exciting themes were also released at that time...

1990 saw the first distinct boots and shoes appearing on figures, which make them look much more realistic, as long as they're not day-glo pink or purple or some other stupid colour, and the start of the Pirates theme which has been going strong ever since. I still have some pirates I bought new at the time. Probably 95% of my figures post date 1989, and I prefer the older ones for realism.

For me the 3666 Castle from 1993 was the peak of the Knights theme, when it was still recognised that a castle could not function with knights and nobles alone, you needed some workers too. The modern castle fails in that respect, and also isn't so nice to look at. 1993 saw a massive release of new sets in the knights theme, most of which are still greatly sought after by people who missed them at the time,
1994 saw the first Specials, and guess what, I have several of the original specials too. I only regret that after the first dozen specials I stopped collecting Playmobil for several years. This coincided with my buying a house and starting a new job, so I probably had too many demands on my time and finances to keep track.

Looking at the sets you chose for 1979-1983 ... man what I would give to buy sets from a store instead of cursing at the insane prices on ebay.

Time to win the lotery!

Because there seems to be so much interest in the "half decade" 1989 to 1993, I went back and grabbed three sets from each of the five years (in addition to the ones that cachalote had posted).

Even though these are five great years, I would still be hard pressed to say that these are the very best five. There are too many wonderful sets in the other half decades for me to say that I like any one half decade better than another.

Problem is, My favourite period is righ between two options as I think the release of the large castle (3667) was the herald of a wonderfull period where some of the most wonderfull and favourite sets were released: '93 - 2000 or so.

For me the 3666 Castle from 1993 was the peak of the Knights theme,

i agree 1993 and 1994 saw a great release of mediaval items. actually comparing these to todays new dragon sets well i think the early 90s were more realistic and expandable. barons castle, the robin hood figures the tournament knights well these in combination with the old late 70s houses mediaval make the perfect combo.

I also reckon the romans/ egyptians are absolute fabulus and hope playmobil expands the range of that historic era....
