Title: Continued work on the new rail line
Post by: flatcat on April 12, 2010, 12:26:39
The start of a underground railway line is being constructed before the rest of the main line can be completed.

This is the very start of the underground line with the first station. An overground station and the rest of the overground line will later be built on top as the underground work is completed.

Overground and the P&M site office:

(http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/1843/200908240014.jpg) (http://img411.imageshack.us/i/200908240014.jpg/)

A mini tractor pulls a machine along the length of the site which levels and grades the soil:

(http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/1082/200908240012.jpg) (http://img144.imageshack.us/i/200908240012.jpg/)

Because there is no vehicular access available to the worksite, machines have to be lowered down by crane and a road roller is far too heavy, so a wacker plate is used. It compacts the earth down ready for the track to be laid:

An excavator continues to dig out the earth:

There is now such a  vast amount of excavation material that the tower crane has to be used to load it into trucks to be taken away:

I know this isn't how they are made in real life but it was easier to do it like this than to try and mine a tunnel through the flower bed :P

You certainly have some great ideas, Damo, and it all looks very realistic and the shots are very well thought out.  I like the detail, you even show the tyre tracks of the dumper truck, and the photo looking up at the crane with the corner of the house in the background could be of a real crane.

Great photos, Damo !!!

Thanks for sharing ...

I wasn't going to ask, but I just couldn't help myself ...  ;D
(Maybe it's because I'm a big Playmobil train collector!)

Will your train actually be able to go through the tunnel when construction is completed?

All the best,
Richard

Thanks, Richard :)

I haven't tried it but I don't think that the train would fit as I hadn't dug the hole deep enough, and with the track on top as well there will probably be big problems :-\

Perhaps, we need to find a "smaller" train ... (http://www.gardenwargamer.com/images/lolsign.gif) ... (http://www.gardenwargamer.com/images/breakmeup.gif)
(I just love  my own jokes.) ...  ;D

BTW, Damo ... your photo from the cab of the tower crane is pure creative genius !!!

Thanks again for sharing your construction project. I am really enjoying it!

All the best,
Richard

Hi flatcat,

Yes, I've enjoyed these pictures a great deal! I'm not a 'modern' fan, but your setup and pictures are really well done!

And as far as not being able to bore a tunnel under the flower bed: well, some road tunnels are built using what's called 'cut-and-cover,' which looks exactly like what you were doing here, so I think your tunnel is perfectly realistic.

Many thanks again for sharing these fantastic photos,

AndrewL

 You have very good eyesight WoT!

I hope you can post in the rest of the underground railway when you are completed with your work!  :yup:

I'm afraid that I can't complete it anymore as plants will be in the way, and I had to fill in what I'd done so that Mum didn't have a go at me when she got home. Although she did get angry at me as I had accedentally left a truck in her kitchen! :-[

Thanks for the info AndrewL, I didn't know that :)

Excellent set up :wow:! The attention to detail is superb :)9! You can always tell your mom, at least you didn't dig the tunnel through the kitchen,...or you did you? ;)! Maybe you just left the truck as evidence of the bigger plan :evilplan:!

Hi !

great story and great pictures.

I love the idea with the underground train and station, but I guess I will not have enough space to realize it....

With a 3% inclination you need 10 meter rail to get down to 30 cm under the ground and another 10 meter to get up again plus several meter for the underground station, my garden is far to small for that.......

Rainer

Hi Damo !

Quite easy.

Imagine a big triangle...

Each meter rail with an inclination/declination of 3 % gives you 3 cm loose or gain of height...

so 10 meter with 3cm/1m gives 30 cm difference in the height....that´s the minimal height you need for a playmo train.....

So you need 10 meter to get down to the station and another 10 meter to come up again....

Regards
Rainer

It's a gradient of about 1,72 degrees. Correct? My maths is a bit rusty.

Any steeper and the train won't run properly, right?

If I am not wrong the formula is angle = arctan(0,03), but if have no calculator here.......

Yes, 1,72 degrees is right!!!

I used calculated the sine and used the calculator to convert it to degrees. But as I said, haven't done this for many years and my calculator has no arctan button.

This thread is part 2 of the railway contruction.

Damo, is there going to be more? Are you going to make the tunnel work and run a train through it?
