Title: 4398 - Western Take Along (2011)
Post by: Gis on May 16, 2011, 20:44:56
Hello All, I have not been contributing much after the WJT, I guess I had a bit of a burnout!

But nothing helps you get back in the saddle more than opening more blue boxes and writing a review so here goes.

Wolf Knight said he would write a review of this set but I had already taken all the pics when I read that and I asked him if it was ok for me to make the review. Sir Wolf if you have anything to add feel free.

So after seeing the new DS catalogue I said I would order the Water Tower and Windmill but not start on the Western theme. However when I saw the take along set for 25 Euro I really couldn’t pass up on it and my wife happily agreed (she wanted the carriages).

First up are the box images where it is already clearly displayed what the “storyline” of this set is.

It all comes neatly stored in the box, you can easily fold the buildings together and take it along. These are not designated buildings as the big signs are stickers so if you already have some of the old Western buildings, say a Bank and a Sherriff’s Office, you can design a new sticker and make this into a post office and a drug store if you would want that.

Here is a picture of the loot that is included in this set. It isn’t much and personally I don’t understand why the Bandit is risking his neck for these meager spoils. I guess these are hard times in the west.

The arms that come with this set are ok but there isn’t any access. The Sheriff has a single holster and the Bandit has two, so that takes care of the three revolvers. There are four slots in the weapon rack, which aesthetically is best filled with two short and two long barrel riffles. This leaves one short riffle for the sheriff.

The klickies are very well done and a I think one of the reason I bought the set was when I took a closer look at this little guys. They all have a very well balanced design IMO. The legs on the Sheriff can be used for medieval klikies as well.

There is quite a nice amount of furniture that comes with the set. The old vault is of course a nice item, but I was personally very happy to get one of these beds. I plan on getting loads of them as they are ideal for medieval castles/inns.

The big cactus is always a great addition to any Western set and does wonders for the surroundings. The two horses are exactly what you’d expect of a this type of set nothing spectacular but great that they included one of those saddles with a blanket roll and a riffle holder.

Here is the first of the overview pictures. This story does end well as the sheriff was just in time to catch the bad guy and lock him behind bars.

Here is a better look of the Sheriff’s office.

This is the inside of the Bank it would have been nice if there would have been one more chair but that might have been pushing it.

And finally the overview shot with both office clearly visible.

So honestly, I am not moving into Western (yet) but this set is too much of a bargain IMO to pass up on. I love how this as a set on its own tells a great story, not seen since the Hansel and Gretel (etc) sets.

Unfortunately I either missed or didn’t have those type of windows that were apparently included in the German version that was reviewed on klickywelt which had some plastic in place to prevent stuff from falling out. It would have been handy so I have no clue what is going on with that.

The carriage is a lovely set for 18 Euro’s but it is a pretty standard affair so I won’t do a review on that (and my wife had it together before I could take the pictures anyway)

Hope you enjoyed the review and maybe we’ll see many new Western Collections start with this.

Great review, Gis!

I might have to get this one! :)

I too like the klickies very much, and I think that micro cacti is a new one too! :D

Damo :)

That's a really nice review. A pity thought you didn't get the "glass" for the windows...not much of a take along if you can loose everything on the way....  8}
I would get it if I could.... I love western!

To me it looks like the windows are on the box image.

I can see why your banker was robbed. The teller has a bed in his office. Your crook though has to sleep on the cold floor.  ;D

Great pictures and review thank you

Thank you for this pictures and review Gis! Now I am more anxious to get it, I believe, judging by the tracking number, I'll have it tomorrow. Neat set!

A sheriff usually had different rifles on his weapons rack so the different rifles are a good choise!

Just one thing, the bed goes in the cell, not in the bank  ;)

And most importantly, I love the fact they reissued the vault again!!!

Just one thing, the bed goes in the cell, not in the bank  ;)

I know that is how it is supposed to be. But the banker and the sheriff have no home. so I thought it would be weird to give the most comfortable sleeping place to the Bandit and have the banker sleep in his chair. The sheriff has his rocking chair out in front so he is sort of ok without a bed!

*grin*

I think maybe the banker is also a psychiatrist! :P Thanks for the great review, Gis! I'm definitely going to be getting this set. ;D Too bad you lost you window glass. :(

Thanks for the review Gis.  Very thorough.  I'm still excited to get these, but I now realize the interiors of the buildings are quite small.  But hey the price is right and they'll look nice nestled in a western town.

BTW, that was also an interesting note that the signs are just stickers, so you could buy more than one set and make alternate stickers to have different buildings.  :thanks:

Well im sorry.  :(
I thought the actual building would be ok, but the parts don't fit, there are missing parts and extra parts as I said. The best thing are the stickers. They are just perfect.
With a little work you could work something out, painting a triming some parts, but all in all it is a huge dissapointment.  :(

As you know we are all always happy to drag other with us into our holes. I am however sorry that the hole I was residing in was not available to you Gaston and made you jump in a hole that is in no way shape or form comparable to mine.

There is still some room in my hole but I guess you'll have to wait a while before you're able to join me. Hope to see you here soon :)

don't worry, I broke my leg jumping in that hole but I will heal! Thanx anyway  though they are not great they are good for customizing. my antex shipping boat ended up being pretty beautiful, so I'll do something with these too.

Alex they are not expensive here. I guess they are only expensive on ebay because they are being sold as rarities or becuase shipping form here is expensive...that's my guess.
Remember one Special here is 10/12 dollars. And this 2 buildings were 80 dollars. Pretty cheap.

sorry to hijack you r thread gis...I will say no more!  0)

Yep. Not real glass, of course, but fake glass at the windows to keep things from falling out, since it's a take-along.

Great review Gis
I'm undecided as to whether I want the buildings, but I do like the klickies - especially the banker, and the furniture would be useful.

No worries, sometimes conversations just go left right and center...as long as they end up center again it's great :-)

Elaine are you not doing a Western theme for your dios this summer? I really think that these will look great in any western town, it's two houses in one. Soorry for being so enthuiastic but this really is an awesome set if you are planning to build a western town :-)

Definitely a great set to build up a little town with. I have Sheriffs offices, Saloons and Banks aplenty, but no normal businesses such as a Dry Goods Store, Barber, Undertaker etc., and no normal houses for people to live in, so the stickers will not be applied in my case. The Sheriffs office lock-up wold make a great store room for a dry goods store.

Shame they make the Sheriff's desk and chair red. Why? Why? What's wrong with a normal wood color? Is his desk not fashioned from wood? Maybe it's from a Californian Redwood...

Nice review Gis! I'll be getting two or three when they ride into town!

Here is a picture of the "front parts" of the buildings. The first and third parts are the roofs. They have four connectors that fit System-X holes. Hope this helps :-)

I couldn't resist and bought this as well!

This is a lovely set and although it mostly uses old parts, it is the best set for me of 2011!
Couple of remarks:
I had the glass windows as well, maybe yours were simply missing?
The quality of some parts is different: items are more shiny, klicky's bend more easily and hats don't stay on to well. This set is completely made in the Czech republic. I guess that is why they could make it so cheap!
Absolutely love it!

Well, the Czech Republic is a neighbouring country of Germany and is part of the European Union, so possible production there is subjected to the same quality-demands/standards as products made in Germany or any other EU-countries.
Though labour costs there (and also in European countries like Slovakia, Poland, Baltic states, ...  and most certainly the poorest EU-memberstates Romenia and Bulgaria) are indeed still lower there then in Germany and other countries in the Western part of Europe.

Firstly my set does have the plasticc glass over the window frame. (attachment 1) Gis are you sure its not there?  :eh?:

Secondly, the clips that keep the counter and cell bars in place are good designed and keep the bars well in place. (attachments 2&3)

My verdict: this is a really great set!!! For a caryying case it provides so many possibilities!!!! you can easily seperate the two houses by loosening the hinges and use them as seperate house in a western town diorama!!!!

As far as the made in Czech issue - I'm sure expense is part of the reason but I believe capacity is also a factor. They are building a big addition to the plant in Germany right now, so clearly they don't have enough room for their current volume.

Great pics and review. I want one of these too...

The only problem is.. how many banks and sheriff's offices can a western town have?  ???

I fell for the old western buildings  on ebay sometime (as I tend to do). Shame they're not compatible :(

They may not be compatible but they are roughly the same size. and if you don't want to have a lot of banks and sheriff offices you can always customise them and turn them to something else!

Yes, I'm just not very... confident on my abilities to do that ;)

The klickys are awesome though... The bank guy is real nice!

And as it uses stickers you can easily design some new stickers to go on the store-front-boards. So it shouldn't really take any customizing at all.

Thanks for the review and pictures, Gis and Panos!

Although I'm not a fan of the take-along idea, as I wish these were free-standing buildings with three or four walls and a roof, the klickies and accessories look great.  As a big Western fan, I'll definitely be picking this up. :cowboy:

Went to my local shop to pick up some green dragon knights and some specials but what do I see?  This set and the new stage coach. Of course I got both and ditched the green dragons. :)

This shop prices their sets a little high but if you bring in your reuseable bag you get a 10 % discount. In other words, the stage coach was 32 dollars and the take along was 49. I think they are high but I love the western theme.

They were close to the same price here and this store typically does not mark up, maybe on some special sets but even then its only a dollar or two. Our store does a 25% off sale once a year so I may have to wait because I do want a few  of each .
