Hello all,
Well, finally I went mental and bought 40 4611 special soldiers....I do not think there is a single toy store down town Thessaloniki that has any left...
I was very anxious to see if there were any differences with the older special so i took one of the new ones out of its box, and started looking at it.... By accident, I also saw the only difference between the two....
But first look here...the one on the left (as you see it) is the old 4611 and the one on the right is the new one...
(http://img38.imagefra.me/img/img38/6/5/7/baldthar/f_grpn3qq3m_fb1da56.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)
No differences whatsoever...even the same mold was used...as can be seen under the feet...
(http://img40.imagefra.me/img/img40/6/5/7/baldthar/f_grpn3qqvm_e70501a.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)
But, and here is the major difference, once you look into the hat you can see it...
(http://img38.imagefra.me/img/img38/6/5/7/baldthar/f_grpn3qqxm_0023b60.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)
The left one is the old one while the right one is the new one....and the new one feels to stand better on the klicky's head, and no there is no difference between old and new hair....
So if you bid on any of them used on ebay, ask from the seller to show you the hat first, thus determining which edition is it.... (and here comes the question what if they show us an older hat on a new klicky.... 8} 8} 8} 8})

Great review Panos, those soldiers look great - but 40! :o :o :o
Are you going to make a set up for us to see? ;D
-
40 Royal Guards seems to be just about the right number, Panos ...
If you haven't seen Martin's post about 4611, you might want to click HERE (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=1661.0)!

That was indeed a most educational thread Richard!!! Thank you for bringing it to my attention! I too love playmobil for giving us history lessons!!!
And now that i think about it....can anybody tell me what admiral this is k3110 - Admiral (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=k3110)? I s he french? is he english??? I know i've seen Lord Nelson's portrait paintings with similar coloured uniforms...the design though seems to be french...

Thank you Damo!!! Lets just say that, ''in an old naval shipyard/base/prison on a desolate island, the Grand Admiral (or emperor) decides to pay a visit, so that he can see for himself its strategic importance...'' (what of a desolate island?????)

The Brits would never put North at the bottom of a map!
And, the moustache looks French ...

You're right Richard, I am holding this small map now in my hands, its a reversed map :o :o :o :o :o :o :o This is actually cuba and the coast of florida upside down!!! Is it not???
The moustache is french....but the uniform...still looks like a brit to me....werent french naval uniforms at that time red???
Logically, since all the soldiers that were made from playmobil at that time were supposed to be french this is indeed a french admiral.....but still....

You really know the Caribbean, Panos! Yes, that's Cuba and Florida, the Caribbean islands and the coast of Venezuela. All upside down.
And, you are correct about the French naval uniforms being red. I have attached an image of the French naval uniforms during the time of the American War for Independence. However, the French naval uniforms may have looked quite different during the time of Nelson and the battle of Trafalgar.
-
WOW :o! A fantastic soldier collection, Panos! You are quite a serious history source of information, well done :)9!
-
Look forward to seeing those guards in action soon, Panos.

Richard I remember a scene in ''Master and Commander, the far side of the world'' movie with Russel Crow.... He is the captain of a British ship during the Napoleonic Wars (1799-1815) and i do remember that he saw the captain of the French ship he was chasing and the french captain wore red....the american war of independence took place between 1775 and 1782....while nelson lived between 1758 and 1805... so i dont think uniforms changed significantly during this time period...and if you look at army uniforms in general at that period, blue and red colours seem to overlap....

Thank you Bill!! and i keep looking for more of these soldiers....Thessaloniki stores seem to have run out of... ;D ;D ;D mainly because of me, partly because someone else bought some, partly because the shops do not seem to keep large stock these days....
I did study history and social anthropology ;) but keep forgeting things....

I will try my best Richard!!!!

That's quite an army, Wolf Knight! When I found four of these at a toy store a couple years ago I was ecstatic, but 52 is incredible! Will the admiral's visit to the small island outpost be shown to us in a photo story in the future? ;)

Panos, as you may already know, naval (and army) uniforms were slow to change even after the orders went out for everyone to adopt the new uniforms. There were several reasons for this:
1. Mail was very slow in those days (especially if you were on the "far side of the world").
2. Getting the new uniforms made, shipped and delivered could take months (even years).
3. Reluctance on the part of officers and crew to replace good uniforms with something different.
4. And, I'm sure that there may have been some other reasons that I can't think of ...
The Playmobil blue "Royal Harbour Guard" were probably styled after the French of that period. The flag has a "fleur de lis" and the figure on the far right in set 7587 certainly looks like a French naval officer. And, let us not forget those French moustaches ...

All too true Richard!! Communictions were very difficult...Particularly interesting is the notion of reluctance... Many officers might have wore the new uniforms but they surely kept a lot from the old ones as well to wear as accessories...
And probably true that playmobil, after issuing the english redcoats, wanted to produce a french uniform...although hats show a great difference in the time period....
I also think you have issues with this french moustache.....don't you Richard?

No strange at all Alex!! I am a fan of naval history, and of course service in the navy drives you to become fanatic....I really love that period of history...and the uniforms (appart from the seabattles) especially!!!
I think that if i contacted playmobil hellas and asked them for a 100 of these they might have freaked out...and besides...its more fun to chase them around....

Usually a private buyer can't buy more than 9 of any individual Special figure direct from Playmobil in a single order, they seem to think if you buy 10 or more you plan to sell them on. Phoning them and explaining you want them all for yourself may get round this difficulty.
I see nothing strange in buying multiples of any uniformed figure, that's how we build armies, and of course navies.

Πανο, as you are a determined collector and these royal gurads look awesome i would advice on the purchase of a few cannon galleons to put this might army in and create a small yet powerful armada ....

Same here, and I have got a few tucked away somewhere, but not more than a dozen I think. They go in with my Pirate theme, and as their uniform is fancier than most, they will probably act as a personal honor guard to a bigwig Govenor or General, or as a Palace Guard.
I really like these figures, and wish Playmobil would use the Specials series to produce more unusual figures like this, rather than an endless series of variations on knights and pirates (of which I have plenty thank you).

Martin this is indeed a sad case...they are called specials because they are supposed to be something unique.....with so many variations were is the uniqueness???? I love getting them in quantities and buildin huge armies but i also want one or two of them to be...well... special!!!! :D :D

They look good but they repeat themselves. I the US they have the blister packs (the plastic packs with two klickies) in most of which these specials are repeated. Slowly the same happens here!!! This Teutonic knight (4625) is in the blister pack with the Templar knight...so what is special???

I on the other hand LOVE  that pack Wolf Knight.
I am an amature Crusades historian so I love being able to buy those packs and set up Crusading armies.
They are not so specail, but think of what would happen if Playmobil took away all of their "not so special" kights.
Like 7664 black lion knights, and 7768 lion knights, or any other 3 packs.
If they all were special we would not have armies, we would have lots of individual klickies.
And that to me wouldnt be very fun.

I'm afraid there wasn't a instruction included with those. I got mine from a friend (who had a friend that lived in Germany) and I've been looking for the numbers of those for ages.
I'm afraid to say that, unless Playmodb.org has them, I will never find out :(
Fortunately, I got a large number from Martin - I still want to recreate the Nuremberg Guards - still trying to find the right klicky for that
