The 4046 Road Maintenance Truck has been out for over a year now and is the main multipurpose vehicle for the Construction theme. The truck is really quite large allowing it to be very detailed. I believe the chassis is based on a Mercedes Benz Unimog. Now to the pictures.
Also, I plan on using this set for a custom fire service truck, so there are no decals shown.
The picture on the front of the box gives you a great look at the hopper and the spreader but it really doesn't do the truck justice.
-
Now the front, sides, and rear of the truck.
-
The plow on the front is quite larger than the plows on older sets and features rubber tires and can be removed.
-
The hopper can be removed from the back with the use of the crane and has support legs to rest on while not in use.
-
On the driver's side of the truck there is a toolbox that can hold ALL the tools.
The spreader, when opened, allows all the contents of the hopper to empty to the street. ;D
-
The hopper has a plastic tarp type thing to protect the contents ( plastic rock salt ) from the elements.
The inside of the hopper is angled to facilitate the flow of the contents.
-
The cab follows the rest of the newer trucks from Playmobil with a detailed interior.
Amber lights are mounted on the top with the middle of the lightbar being painted silver.
-
Now the driver...
To my surprise, he is big klicky. I think this is because he sits in the truck while all the other klickys do the work. I already called him lazy, don't worry.
-
Alright, that's it. I hope you found this review interesting and maybe a little persuasive. >:D

Thanks for that splendid review, Ben. The truck is, indeed, basd on the current style Unimog. I had hopes that the new fire engine would use this chassis. Maybe there are plans for one based on it for the future. Meanwhile, here's a great custom by dreamteam combining the construction truck chassis and a 3880 rear body.
This was on my to buy list, but I'm really trying to limit my Playmobil buys at the moment (I have plans for the new fire station set when it comes out you see).

Excellent review on this beautiful set, Ben! It is definitely on my want list, Christmas list, birthday list, but so far I haven't gotten it yet ???! I don't understand :hmm:!
-
Thanks Firechief - you did what the box didn't.
You truly did the set right. And you are right too - it is a wonderfull set perhaps one of the best engineered Playmobil set at the moment.
Thanks for making that clear.

That is wonderful, Firechief!
I'm not into modern sets, but the way that you have described it, it even sounded alluring to me! I guess that my eyes played with it through your words! :D
Thanks a lot! :wow:

Looks like a great truck, very useful for snow season
-
Nice review, but I am upset. I have it in the road works on my main layout but I can not find room for it as a snow plough on my Christmas Layout.

Thanks for a really great review, Ben ... :wow: ... :wow: ... :wow: ...
I have always loved the Mercedes-Benz Unimog ...
I would have missed this beauty had it not been for your splendid review.
However, 4046 is not an inexpensive set. It is currently available from Playmobil USA at $54.99 USD.

Great review. My local toy store had these marked down 50%. I could not resist. It is a nice vehicle.

Hi
That is a deal I could not pass up. Here it sells for $60 and before I had one thought it was a bit expensive. Now that I have one and see all it has it actually is reasonable but at half off it is a great buy that would have me clearing the shelf.

It was a great deal. It was 55 dollars so I got it for 27.50. They had all their construction sets at 50% off. I picked up the asphalt cutter, the road directional sign with trailer and the set with the bricks also. I think they are making room for the new sets coming out.
-
I was able to get a deal similar to this on 3 of these trucks MIB with free shipping. They are great!

The way you re-serviced the truck reminded me of something…
Redding, CA (US) Police Department has a road repair vehicle (complete with the yellow arrow lights) they re-painted department blue and slapped an RPD sticker on the doors of (they left the yellow hazard lights on and I think they left the original engine, not exactly a high-speed pursuit vehicle) for primarily for traffic accident investigations…
