Title: Images not displayed in posts
Post by: tahra on November 01, 2020, 15:49:02
Since several people are coming across this issue on several threads, I decided to put this here (copied from the PROCESS)

Apparently there was a recent Chrome update that "upgraded" unsecure urls (starting with http) to secure (with https) - that happens to me if I access The PROCESS on Chrome. By replacing all images to load from https, it breaks it, because I don't have a certificate for playkingdoms. So, while http://www.playkingdoms.com/temp/avatars/tahrapk.jpg  is perfectly fine, https://www.playkingdoms.com/temp/avatars/tahrapk.jpg  is obviously wrong (since there really isn't a certificate).

Found a workaround here: https://help.salesforce.com/articleView?id=000355099&language=en_US&mode=1&type=1

Click on the icon next to the url in the address bar
Click on Site settings - there is a long list of options
On the "Insecure content"  - choose "Allow"

I don't THINK this is a problem for playmofriends in general, unless the site is hacked... I don't recommend doing this with banking sites, ebay, paypal and such. Please also keep in mind I am not a security expert.

If that workaround stops working, and if that is the problem (and I think it is), I don't see it fixed in the near future, at least as far as I am concerned -  it is not in my plans to pay for a certificate (the site is purely a fan site, I make no money at all from it, there are no transactions or anything, and frankly, it costs me enough as it it :( )

You can also try to use another browser, to see if it works (I usually use Firefox, and didn't see that YET - but it may be coming, I think.)

Considering google thinks it's a great idea NOT to display even an error messages, I doubt this issue will go away by itself.

I've tried this and it still doesn't load images on PF. :(

Odd - I managed to make it work when I looked into it...  :(

Worked for me, thanks for finding that solution Tahra!

Ah I got it to work!  :woohoo: I thought I was supposed to go to e.g. playmokingdoms and allow insecure content FROM that site; NO. It's playmofriends.com that needs the permission changed!  :!:

Thanks again, tahra, for walking me through this recently!
I'm glad you posted this here for other folks who are as "technically challenged" as I am.   ;)

Thank YOU, for the heads up. I had not realized, since I don't usually use Chrome, except for work.

I´m not so enthusiastic to change my settings to allow all insecure content from PF...
PF has been hacked a few times before IIRC, and on several occasions I have also received security-warnings/alerts of my 'anti-Covid'-system about malicious things when visiting some PF threads or clicking on some attachements...

... well, that is just my non-expert opinion....  :-[

Might be just be my bad memory but this forum has never actually been hacked  :eh?:
Maybe you’re thinking of another one.
There was one occasion in the past when someone with a grudge against a certain member got access to that person’s account and deleted some of their posts. As far as I can tell it was because the password had been either knowingly shared or it was used on multiple other sites, one of which had a data breach. It was not because PF itself was hacked.

Hi Sylvia, I chose the wrong wording, I should have written 'forum down due to infection with malware or similar'...
At least that is how I remember it... Or am I wrong on that as well?

Nope, never had an issue with malware either.  :P
Maybe you’re thinking of Playmoboard?
That went down a few times, if I recall.
And after the last time it just stayed down.  ;)

No, it was much more recently, a few years ago, so certainly not Playmoboard.  ;)
How did I then get that idea...  ???
I´m pretty sure my anti-virus/-malware & such went nuts a few times (in the past) when visiting Playmofriends or paricular threads / topics, maybe it´s that and I assumed the whole forum got infected...  :eh?:

Thanks, Tahra! I finally got around to apply the fix and can now see your pics (and Lufty's) without changing browser! :apple: :cheerlead:

Thanks for the advice, tahra. Pictures in The Process failed to appear for me yesterday, both in Chrome and Samsung Internet browser (the latter stopped working with eBay a few months ago too) on my Samsung (Android) tablet.

I'm posting this in case anyone else is having difficulties.

I tried all the suggestions given, but couldn't locate any reference to allowing mixed or insecure content. I looked in Settings, tried the Desktop site, allowed Automatic Downloads, all to no avail.

So I am now using Firefox, which works fine!

My tabby is basically useless... can't get it to update, can't access the store.. no idea :(
(mind you I got it in 2012..)

Odd... I never looked before or after it, since I usually use Firefox too.. though it may be a matter of time until it happens too. I still don't understand how a silent failure (kinda, because IT WAS NOT a fail if left alone - it was http, but not a fail) is a positive thing. Or errors from the stupid blind replacement of http with https.
(end rant)

So I am now using Firefox, which works fine!

I take that back. I cannot see the whole width of some pictures in Firefox (on Samsung tablet) and there seems to be no way of scrolling sideways or zooming out. This is not a criticism of PF, but of browser software which is not optimised for this platform. It seems I will have to get out my laptop (Windows, Firefox) every time I want to look at pictures on PF.

I get that sometimes on the computer too - some images are really wide...  but I can usually scroll (normally by pressing the middle mouse button)

I quit long ago trying to look at threads with loads of images on the tabby..

I found a setting in Firefox which allows zooming and now I can also scroll horizontally.

I like the 'tabby' for many things, but its reduced functionality (compared with a laptop, for example) can be frustrating. For example, I often lose what I have written in a reply box on here, if I go to another website to look something up. I guess its got quite a small brain!

Well, I really need a full keyboard to actually WRITE something in a timely fashion..  :-[

Plus, my tabby is old (2012), put that with the user not being exactly new, and it's a disaster!

Sorry, been reading too many ebay adverts.  "In Sealed Box" and "Mint In Sealed Box"...

I'm having the same problem, I have a Fire tablet which I mostly access the internet with, & that uses the Silk browser (no Firefox available for it).

I had a look to see if I can change the permissions for playkingdoms & couldn't find a way to do it on my tablet/browser.  I had looked here already.  Without rooting my tablet (which I really don't want to do - have done it before & had issues)  I'm stuck.

That seems surprising. Try this? https://www.technipages.com/kindle-fire-silk-browser-alternatives#:~:text=Yes%2C%20good%20ol'%20Firefox%20is,or%20any%20other%20Android%20device. Thanks Graham, I did know about this, but see below..

I don't know much about tablets... is there another browser you can use on it?

No, with the Fire tablets you're stuck with the browser that comes installed (Silk).  There's no other browser choices in the Amazon app store.  With older Fire tablets you had to root them , but now I think you can just DL an APK & choose to allow apps from elsewhere, but it increases risks that things will go wrong on your tablet, & I haven't felt like risking it.

Right now the only way I can see the images, is if I go to quote your post, then copy & paste the URLs you've embedded into my browers.  For those of us who're having issues viewing, could you add a link to each image that we could click or would that be too much of a pain when you're posting?

for example..

image 1 (http://www.playkingdoms.com/temp/playmoproc/9502d1.jpg)

That way for those of us who can't see a displayed image, we can see the link & click on that to view the image (which works fine for me).

And the browser doesn't mess up the link?

It is a pain, but I will try to  ;)   Thank you for going to the trouble to figure out an alternative!

Works fine for me, I tested before posting (didn't want to waste your time otherwise).

If you have the basic tag: (url=)image(/url) (with ( ) replaced with the correct square brackets) all it needs is just an extra paste of your link & adding the image no, & that way we all get to keep enjoying your PROCESS shots!  8}
