Title: Victorian City Life 5955
Post by: toyologist on July 26, 2012, 21:40:58
It arrived today! I've taken pictures and will be uploading them directly.

There are no curtains or blinds for the windows. That's quite a disappointment. The holes are on the walls, so they can always be added. There is wallpaper. That's a relief. But, there are two different patterns on the 3 walls. One of the patterns is from the expansion floor. The other was is the 5300. Oh, but there's no attic wallpaper. Another letdown, but as you'll see, the attic is closed off anyway.

Minimal furnishings are included. There's a table (plain top) 4 chairs, tea service with cart, fern, fireplace, end table, and grandfather clock.

Anyone who wants this set primarily for the klickies will probably be pleased with the offering.  There are 8 adults, 2 children, and a baby. Most adults, and even the children, are well adorned.

Well, I guess I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Mine also arrived today. I'm going out of town tomorrow morning, so I didn't want to get too involved with it and start putting it together. I did open the box to take a quick look. The baby, dressed in green, was not in any of the baggies... just laying on the bottom of the big box... and it's missing one arm. So I guess I got a "special" baby. :)

ThanX 4 the pix!

Are this house and the fence the same color like the old 5300 house or are they both lighter like the new fence (DS) 7477 or is only the fence, which is like 7477 ?

ThanX 4 the answers.

Looks like a great set but the house really is oddly small. With all the windows there doesnt seem to really be a good place to put the fireplace thats included with the set.

Also, the clicky with the red pants, blue shirt and grey beard reminds me of papa smurf.

The pictures are great!  The house and the fence are the original colors.  I was disappointed with the foundation opening in the back, it looks unfinished to me and not up to Playmobil's standards.  The finials on the dormers and the door handles are made from a different plastic than the original ones, but otherwise the parts are a match to the original 5300.

it looks like a fantastic set! and the box really beautiful!
Love it!

Pity they used the same baseplate than in other sets but here as it has nothing attached to it, it seems unfinished  :(
Didn't cost them much to use the same wallpaper for the 3 walls, I can't think of any reason for this desicion, other than to give versatility to the set, but anyway... a weird choice!

all in all... I'd love to get my hands on it!

A very nice set indeed, thanks for the detailed pictures!

As mentioned, the 3 different wallpaper-designs and the unfinished baseplate are odd. Lots of nice klickies & accesories though and the car and carriage are great.
But at around 130 USD + shipping to Europe + possible import duties and custom taxes...  ::) I think I'll skip it!  Luckily I already have everything from the original sets (except the house because I chose for the 5301-mansion and it's yellow colors for my Carribean settings)...

Thanks for posting the pics!

I'm kind of disappointed on the house and the tea cart. It looks like the house is just recombined elements, and they even closed off the attic  :(

I do really want the carriage and the green car though, so perhaps if there's a good sale...

that trolley is not new. it has been used in the magic castle theme several times. it's quite different form the victorian and it's very nice.

to open the attic just don't place the panel with the window at the back side of the house!  ::)

I was able to buy two blinds for the attic windows. An ebay seller has them for $2 each. (She has more!) I'm going to buy curtains from the same seller, as soon as I can decide on the color. Any opinions?

I too wonder why Playmobil closed off the attic, when it's such a valuble space! Perfect for a bed.

You will need two pair the special curtain rods that fit the windows at the corners (30 60 8400) and one pair of the regular rods (30 05 9760).  I didn't know about the corner rods until Gaston (tonguello) brought them to my attention a while back.  I don't usually bother with the curtains or the rods.   Although I have had some success with cutting my own out of felt using an old pair as a template.

??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???  i thought the baseplate is the same its just trhat in 4297 ( i assume) its the same as in 5300,5005 which means they all have the same baseplate but for the opening sections there is part that covers the lower level of the baseplate which is open....

No the pavillions do not come with the floor piece like this set, so if you want to convert a pavillion into a house with a second floor you will need to order the brown floor piece.  :)

thank you for such a wonderful review, Toyologist!

the quality looks good to me. Owning most of the original victorian theme I am not particularly thrilled about this set because there is nothing new to me - however it makes me happy that non-mib victorian fans can now get some of those pieces and figures at a more reasonable price.

i wish there was an official come back in a more updated version, but may that's too much asking for ;D

Thanks, Joe! You saved me some money! It's been years since I assembled my 5300. I'd forgotten all about corner curtain rods.

With two wallpaper patterns in one room, I had a tough time picking a curtain color. I've always thought that the burgundy looked best from the outside and with the formal furnishings, but I didn't like it with either wallpaper pattern. So, left to decide between pink and blue, I chose pink. Not so much because it looked better with the walls, but I thought it did look better than blue from the outside. Matched the flowers, at least.  :)

Thank you for the complete review. I was aware of some changed/odd/missing parts from the original 5300 but overall I think it is a nice set, specially for the people who has no part from the original victorian sets. I am particularly happy they have kept the original exterior color of the walls and fence, and too the tiled floor and original wallpapers, but I find strange this mix with different designs, too. To be honest, I would prefer they had chosen another design from the living or dinning room, according to the interior furnishings, instead of the kitchen/bathroom ones from the 5300. I miss the curtains too and a wallpaper for the attic.

I like the rest of the accessories, figures and vehicles very much, especially the characters respect the original ones.
This set is not cheap, and I think a little better effort in the contents would be greatly celebrated by fans around the world, so I would like they keep the original brown wood color in furniture and the original mould for the serving cart, but maybe this is only a question of taste or personal preferences.

I love the packaging, and if this set is released finally in Europe, through Toys'r'us or maybe through DS from Playmobil itself, it would be a good value, even if presented just in bag.

Greetings!

I like that the set includes the figures and almost the exact accessories that came with the original kiosk set 5350!  Great choices on those figures!! The kiosk itself is being re-released as an add on but without any figure. I'm excited that I can now get the figures too! Plus it seems to also include the entire carriage set 5600! (Minus the hat sticker.) That also is super cool. The fence is good, but not too many sections. The house parts are okay, but nothing fancy if you have several houses and spare parts already.  ;D

I'm still on the fence. I can live without the house, but carriages are $70 on Ebay, and I really want the carriage. I have a spare tea cart, so the gold one could be given to the fairy tale people (it matches that set better).

I didn't notice the hat sticker. If someone with the original could measure it, it wouldn't be too hard make a replica on sticker paper.

Um, weird question: does the outer shipping box say Toys R Us? Wondering if I can pass this under the radar...

I'm not sure, but I would assume that if they do, there would be some sort of option to ship it as if it were a gift. I suppose it depends whose eyes you want to hide it from and whether they could see past that or not.

Yeah, the outer (presumably brown or white) box.

I don't see an option in the cart, only that it's not eligible for gift wrapping, which isn't the same. I'm hoping to hide it from adults, long enough to get the box in my room and the items well-mixed with the others  ;)

I went to the garage to check outer shipping box (that's where I toss the boxes my Playmobil arrives in). Unfortunately, it's already gone. Sorry.

If it did say Toys R Us, it was in an understated sort of way. Maybe on a black and white label. Not big on the side like the boxes Playmobil uses to ship.

Good luck. Maybe no one else will be home when the UPS truck delivers!

One can only hope :)

Now I should probably get something for my niece's birthday (turning 3) as well, since it'll be free shipping anyway...

From the ones they send me it is just a plain brown box with the info on the label. I have not seen a TRU logo-ed box

When you order it they sometimes send you an email telling you the tracking # so you could always follow the package to your door and be sure you are home alone when it does arrive. If some one is home you could use the great effective line "here is $20 go get yourself something to eat"  ;)

Giorginetto, I suppose you could get an American to buy you some, but the shipping would be insane. Not to mention custom fees...

If the weight of 10 lbs per set on the Toys R Us website is correct, shipping for 3 sets would probably be around $100 (USD), depending on the box dimensions.

It really is expensive to ship things now. I just had a package come from malta and shipping was 1/2 the items cost. Luckily it was a big box with lots of stuff so it still worked out in my favor

Thanks for the tip on the FAO set being stocked in TRU. I will go check the store and start hunting for a sale

That would definitely save on the overseas costs. But I think FAO stores are only in the United States from what I've heard.

TRU owns FAO and if they can make a buck I do not see how or why they would pass. They are in the bussness of moving toys and if you can move 10k units then do it.

Currently there is only one FAO location in the world... 5th Avenue in New York... but FAO toys are sold in all the TRU's I've seen lately...

While the economy was on steroids FAO was really a big catalog presence with over the top items such as $10,000 tree houses and $5000 MBZ's for kids

I see. I've never heard of the store or its toys until these new sets were mentioned. If it's just one famous store, maybe there is a chance for the FAO sets to make it to European Toys'R'Us stores!

Because of the store specific box I doubt that they will... BUT I would expect that the DS catalog next year will include some if not all of the component sets as add-ons

Hi all, I have been gone for awhile from Playmobil, but this Victorian set has made me re-appear.
 :)

I just wanted to post to let you all know that, if you have seen the movie "Big" with Tom Hanks, then you are familiar with FAO Schwarz.  Playmobil and the "Big piano" at FAO make their appearances in that movie.

I visited FAO on a trip to New York in 2002, and there was a whole room set up with the modern theme - grocery store, airport, etc.  I am trying to attach pictures.  Thanks to that trip, I started my collecting frenzy, and it's been downhill ever since.

I used to take my class to FAO Schwarz as part of our Christmas outing.  The kids loved it (almost as much as I did.  )  We would then go down 5th Avenue and see all of the stores with their decorations.  It is one of my fondest memories.    :cloud9:

I'm a Playmobil nut from Canada, and since they wouldn't ship outside USA, thanks to a Smurfy collector living in the US, I just received this set this week.

Very nice set, with very unique box...... I wonder how many of these boxes are manufactured..... I know the pieces already existed, but from a collector standpoint, the box is also very appealing...

Cheers from Canada!
