History of Playpeople in UK
« on: April 18, 2013, 21:17:48 »
Having acquired some Playpeople klickies from ebay recently, I decided to look into the history of this 'British Playmobil' further. Information is in rather short supply. Here are some useful sources, anyone got any others?:

http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=2576.msg29333#msg29333 gives a concise history of Playpeople
http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=2576.0 shows scans of a 1978 Playpeople catalogue
http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=2702.0 has some scans of a 1980 Playpeople catalogue
Playmobil Collector 1974-2009 3.Edition pub. Fantasia Verlag GMBH Germany 2009 pages 459-469; pictures of set packages
http://www.knightsandvikings.co.uk/factory.htmshows aerial photo and map of the Swansea factory, with staff photos

One question I would like an answer to is this: were any Playpeople klickies or accessories actually manufactured in the UK, or were they just assembled and packaged here? For example was the policeman's helmet (see http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=12712.msg237481#msg237481) made in Germany or UK? It is only found in Playpeople sets.

.
At that moment the ship suddenly stopped rocking and swaying, the engine pitch settled down to a gentle hum. 'Hey Ford.' said Zaphod, 'that sounds good. Have you worked out the controls on this boat?' 'No,' said Ford, 'I just stopped fiddling with them.' (With thanks to Douglas Adams)

Sir Gareth (Garry) Is the guy you need for all things Playpeople, as you probably will have realised from reading his posts. He seemed to know everything there is to know about Playpeople when I met him, so it may be worth contacting him directly if you want to learn more
