So it can be used as a "take-along pirates set" as well!

That's a massive model whale at about 7.65 metres scaled up, although in real life it a sperm whale that size would only be about half grown.

Thanks, Andi ...  :wow:

GREAT REVIEW !!!

That's a massive model whale at about 7.65 metres scaled up, although in real life it a sperm whale that size would only be about half grown.

Regarding scale, it seems that we both came to about the same conclusion, Gordon.

34cm equals about 13.38 inches;
(Playmobil scale is the same as LGB 22.5:1)

22.5 x 13.38 = almost exactly 25 feet.

Sperm whales grow to 60 feet (however, there have been larger ones).

So this "little" fellow is less than half grown (just as you said, Gordon)!

Wonderful addition to the Playmobil line!

Thanks again, Andi ...

All the best,
Richard

great review, Customizer!!

The whale seems to have two separated moieties, right and left, and just one nostril in one of the sides.

The real sperm whale has a most slender, shaft-like lower jaw. The Playmobil sperm whale is in this respect most similar to the wide-jawed Disney's Pinocchio (1940) whale, which is however better to play as it can swallow the pirates, given its reduced relative size noted by Playmofire and Richard.

It could be good to customize a pirate ship as a whaler (there would be minor adjustments, using more cold weather clothes in the clickies, and putting harpoons on the cannons -for this I would choose the Roman ballistae big darts). Whalers may fight the cachalot and pirates may assault the whalers (as far as I know, sperm whales are only aggresive against men when attacked).

thanks for the review andi.
i agree with pyrrhus - the lower jaw is totally wrong.  :'(
it should have been a lot slender and there should have existed little holes in the upper jaw where the lower teeth could fit (sperm whales only have teeth in the lower jaw).  :(
i must confess that this made me a little sad - i am a sperm whale fan(cachalote means sperm whale in portuguese) so i tend to be a little unforgiving about zoolical mistakes.  >:(
the picture of a poor stranded specimen shows what i mean.

they got the single-left-position nostrel right though.  :yup:
and the humps in its back also seem o.k.  :yup:

sperm-whales are beautiful creatures and quite shy and elusive, living between the surface and 3 km (2miles) deep where the pressure is incredible - 300 kg/cm2 (4000 pounds/square inch).
i have seen a lot of these animals in the atlantic slowly swimming near the surface although they all dived very quickly whenever i got into the water.
they are huge and no doubt this playmo-whale can only be a juvenile.
a real full-grown bull would be about 60 cm (25 inches) when scaled down to playmo-reality.

Somehow, in a way, the size of the boats may, not be accurate in scale, we could say ... In "Sawyer's Playmobil" (http://sawyersplaymobil.blogspot.com/) blog, there's in there somewhere* a photo -- very well conceived, by the way ... -- of a long-boat being lifted up as though it was to be brought into the ship ... Well, in the actual ship, there's no room for a long-boat ... (This is even the reason why the picture concept is perfect: it deceives us, and makes us think that it's possible to do that with the playmobil ship we have ... :D )

The boat is maybe a bit smaller than an actual ship, in scale ... As well as the Roman galley is much smaller than an actual one, which would have plenty of people inside, rowing (...).

In a way, it makes sense that the whale should be made smaller as well. It's, on another hand, to be thought that, in what concerns scale, it's a baby whale ;)

The ultimate purpose of Playmobil is to be a toy, after all ... (...) ::)

Hello, Cachalote ...

...i tend to be a little unforgiving about zoological mistakes.  >:(

I know exactly what you mean. Playmobil made another huge mistake with their "banana tree" that was included with the Gorilla (3029).

Every time I see that darn "banana tree," it makes me wonder if anyone did any research at all or if they just made a wild guess.

I just hope that the Playmobil sperm whale's lower jaw won't bother you as much as the banana tree has bothered me ...  ;D

I have to keep telling myself that they do make a lot of other things properly ... ;)

All the best,
Richard

You are right, Gus, surely it is not a mistake on Playmobil's part, but just the habitual procedure of Playmobil when there are things so enormous in relation to the clicky size to be impractical as a toy, such as castles, ships, pyramids, etc.

Indeed, to forgive the low possibility I have of raising large armies (because of the costs), this makes sense when I play battles with armies of 20 clickies each band (all things big are relatively small with Playmobil, so also are the armies) 8}

Isn't the banana tree only the little one in the front part, while the one that is in the back would be ... whatsoever else?? ???

(Cloudy-heaven!, that tree in the back cannot be a banana tree!!!

You tell me! ... I'm still waiting the first after-ten-years klicky that are arriving, that were unexpectedly caught in the Brasilian Federal Bureau strike that reduced the works to 30% of its eficiency ... :-\ So, maybe I'll still wait a little bit to put hand on a klicky :'( but I WILL SURVIVE!!!!!!! ... (If you believe in a god, do pray to him, ask in my favour! ...) Well ... I will survive. I'm trying to write out about it ... It usually helps me to deal with stuff the most different and diverse, and adverse. 8}

I wrote that the character "had a delay, due to have been caught in ambush, in his way back" ... ;)

Play begins even before Playmo arrives.

Perhaps you can do what I use to do when prived from buying playmos, Gus: getting dedicated to download Playmobil images from the internet!!" ;D ;D
If you cannot collect playmos, you can collect playmo pictures by now... ;D ;D

Indeed, as a child I was always worried by the amount of clickies I needed to make an army, and, when getting a set, I wished to have their enemies. Never felt me complete as a boy, even when my parents just bought me a new set.

Now, I think perhaps you may first look in eBay from your own country. I bought clicks from other countries different from mine and the aduana taxes were quite prohibitive. Once you have contact with some collectors from your country, you can even buy them by e-mail, avoiding to pay the comissions to eBay. There are collectors that buy at low prices for quantity and then sell their excedent, thus buying each set by a cheaper price than if they paided it for a single set, and recovering what they paided for the redundant sets. Once you know them (use to offer many sets on eBay) you can get many clicks most easily.

Thinking again, it'd be nice (maybe perfect (...)) if the whale was accompanied by a pirate in a fishing boat ... But Geobra wouldn't do it :P

You all probably realized that I like to make associations ... Well, I've been thinking about animals that go well with certain collections: there's two  (NEW!) combinations that fit perfecty ... (That I can remember now):

1. crocodiles + Egyptians (NEW!)
& 2. whale (NEW!) + pirates

You are right, Gus, no much attention was paid into the boat. Well, for my part, it is that I only like the non-contemporary sets, except for the animals and details that can fit well with my loved epic series.

Only animal I would rather like Playmobil to make is the giant squid (Architeuthis) to fight not the sperm whale, but the vikings!! More of Jules Verne than recreating a real fight, but nice stereotype of the viking times...

I think Egyptians and Hippos would be a closer association.

No way!: the wort condemnation to an Egyptian would be have his body thrown into a pit of chrocodiles: they believed that, so as to have a happy after life, they had to preserve their bodies, otherwise they'd have no bodies to dwell, when they were dead. / (This was also why their nobles had such great funerary monuments: not only the bodies, but the riches as well ... 8} ) (& pets ... :'( ) (If there were modern day pharaos, they'd be buried with their Playmobil! ::) ...)

However, the hyppo is a great beast to mix with Egyptians too! :yup:

yes gustavo, i have been as close as 10 m above water and maybe 40 m underwater always in the azores islands.  :)
these creatures live in all oceans - if you have unpoluted waters and a sudden rise in the ocean floor from depths around 1000 / 2000 m i am sure you can see them in brasil too.
they feed on giant squids (sometimes bigger than the whales themselves) and this sudden rise creates a rich "upwelling" of nutrients where they grow.
i am sending you a link - http://www.springerlink.com/content/u66x41786461177t/ - and maybe fernando noronha would be a good spot.

Açores ... :) Family there, or work? Or only whales? ...

It's almost a ... an obligation for me as Brasillian to go up and visit Fernando de Noronha ... They say it's very beautiful place. I didn't have a great desire yet of visiting open natural places, but your adventure, I have to admit, quite inspires me to consider doing it :yup:

I have to say, though, that I don't seem with myself to be quite an adventurous fellow :-[ ... Which possibly I may come to miss, in life. But I think it has to do with the character, and I can't help admitting that I don't find myself searching for doing so ... (Have a couple of friends who gave the round in South America on foot, hitchhike and the like; once they tried to take me with them as far as Belo Horizonte, which isn't so far away from Rio, not to me, because I am used to go to that town, to visit family -- only, not at all on hitchhike ... --. I went as far as Buzios (very near from Rio, where I live), and we got lost.

The ... more stravagant thing I intend to do is to visit Prague. It's very far from my home, but I intend to go there. I'd visit Portugal, Oporto, more often, I think, if I had enough moneys to spend in trips.

& I like to remember that I intend to visit Beijing, as well, although I've been living a period of little faith in walking around the world ... Actually, the inicial plan was London & Dublin, Prague, Napoli, and Beijing.

Concerning the adventures on open sea, ... it takes a lot of money too :'( ... I'd love that it could be easier. / Even because, I've been spending all that I can -- responsably (yet 8} ), but all that I can -- with Playmobil! ;D I have quite a delay to cover! ::) )

It's great, though, to hear these cases from (playmo)friends around ... In a way, we can share a bit of the happiness you had about going near chachalotes. (As well as understand a bit better, I believe, your ... demands, about the Playmo sperm whale ...)

About going near sperm whales, do you do it often, or was it one time adventure? (It's absolutely in the topic, and I'm very happy about it!!! 0) )

 ;)
