Title: 4082 Mega THW set
Post by: playmofire on September 29, 2008, 12:06:49
Having eyed up the THW sets produced for the German store Kaufhof, I finally succumbed to temptation and bought two, the 4082 mega set and the 4089 compact loader.  As the THW work closely with the German fire brigade and as my own Playmobil fire brigade's appliances are based on German ones, I felt there was some case for including these sets.

The THW is a largely volunteer civil emergency organisation which can be called on to deal with natural disasters such as floods and man-made emergencies such as major road and rail incidents and building collapses.  You can find more information on the THW here:

http://www.thw-ffm.de/english/

I bought the set on a buy it now offer on UK eBay from VW Aircooled Classics in Aachen who I can recommend.

The word "mega" is an accurate description of the 4082 set and I was surprised by the size of the boxed set and Diane was shocked!  It was 90cm by 50cm by 15cm and weighed in at 5.6kg!  It contains five vehicles, five figures and lots of accessories.  In addition, the necessary batteries were included by the seller and a free THW figure keyring.  Delivery was by DHL and very prompt.

To start the review, then, here are a picture of Diane (looking suitably serious) with the box, front and back views of the box and a line-up of the five vehicles, a digger, a GKW (equipment truck), an equipment/lighting trailer, a dropside/tipper trailer and a dropside/tipper lorry.

The main vehicle is the GKW or equipment truck in the middle of the line-up. This is basically the 3880 fire engine produced in THW blue and with some variation in accessories.  This is quite acceptable as in real life the THW equipment trucks are based on fire service vehicles, often externally being quite indistinguishable from them apart from the colour.

The main differences between the 3880 and the THW version, apart from the colour, are the finish of such items as the roof rails and access ladder in white rather than black, the white THW logo and the absence of the hose reels and the roof  monitor.  The hole where the monitor fitted has been blocked off in the casting process, while two blanking plates are provided to fit into the apertures where the hose reels would go on the fire engine.  (Here, maybe someone in Germany could help me - the THW certainly have turntable ladder fire engines, do they also have the 3880 type of fire engine?  I have a THW custom in mind if they do!)

On more photo of the GKW showing the interior of the rear section.  This is exactly the same as that of the 3880, which in some ways is a disappointment as the pump panel is redundant, although the storage area for the portable pump is still needed.  A revised rear area with a space for the portable pump and storage for other equipment around and above it would have been nice, although I can appreciate Kaufhof's and Playmobil's wanting to keep costs down.

The equipment/lighting trailer is a revamp of the 3178 fire brigade trailer, the major difference, apart from the obvious ones for its new role, being the replacement of the hoses with "ropes".  Maybe in view of its lighting role, imitation electrical cable may have been more appropriate, but this is a minor quibble and the "ropes" provide more play value.  A more serious criticism is that the wheel rims on the wheels supplied were to big to take the blue hub caps securely and so these kept falling out.  Rather than glueing them in, I got out a spare set of wheels from the 3178 trailer and the blue hub caps fitted these perfectly.  Whether mine is a one-off for this problem I can't say, but it does seem that the internal diameter of the wheel rims has been slightly increased.

All the road-going vehicles with the exception of the trailer for the tipper truck carry registration plates using the letters THW just like the prototypes do.  (playtown on Klickywelt has pointed out that the numbers on the plates run from 70000 to 70006 but without a 70004.)

The  main feature of the equipment/lighting trailer is the working lighting mast which when travelling is disassembled and stows neatly on the top of the trailer, the mast itself being stowed at one end and the base at the other on the roof.  The battery compartment is under the trailer body at the towing end of the trailer and there are four outlets so up to four lighting masts can be plugged in.  The power source is three AA size batteries.  There is a neat projection for storing the cable when  the lighting mast is not in use, the design of which is the same as on the real thing (although it is aligned horizontally rather than vertically as on the prototype).

The lighting mast can be used either on the top of the trailer or on the ground and the light comes from four blue/white LEDs, one on each of the four lamp heads.  (The original 3178 LEDs were a yellow/white.)  There is an on/off switch in the side of the lighting head.

Here's the lighting mast being used at ground level, and also a photo of the ropes being got ready for use.

Inside the trailer is a double storage area, one side being a single rectangular area which can take large items and the other side being two slide out trays for smaller items, e.g. the red and white barriers.

For stability when parked, the trailer has a neat, fold down foot at the towing end.

Wow, I'm trying to get my head round why Playmobil would release such a huge set, instead of making it 3 or 4 smaller sets. How many of these do you think actually sell?

Very interesting to read about the THW on their site, thanks for the link, Gordon.

I'm wondering how the authorities divvy up work between the THW and the regular emergency services, such as the fire brigade. I'm impressed that so many people are willing to put in so much time and effort, and put themselves in the way of danger, with no financial reward.

Hi Martin,
From what I have read about this THW organization, is all young people are given a choice to join the military for a period of time or volunteer in the THW or other emergency services for 6 years. That is a definite way to keep the manpower issues taken care of  ;)! Most people start their training at a very young age! I am sure there are members on this site that can elaborate on this topic for sure! I am definitely interested since Playmofire has brought this theme to light.

Aha, kind of like National Service in the UK, that was got rid of back in the 60s.

I can come up with so many reasons why National Service would be good for both the individual and the country they serve, it would be top on my list of things to reinstate if I were in a position to do so.

If anyone's interested in my theory, let me know and I'll start a separate thread.

Hi Martin,
It would be an interesting poll to conduct to see what the "opinion" of the current younger generation is on the subject of volunteering their time toward helping others in times of natural disasters, & inhumane suffering, such as fires, building collapses, etc. It seems its more of a "gimme" attitude floating about!
I volunteered for nearly 20 years on schedules as an EMT/EMT-I, & 8 years as a volunteer firefighter/rescue tech. In dark times of my personal life it gave me purpose, & kept me from making some very bad choices. I think sometimes youngsters have to much idle time on their hands  ;)!
This causes unfavorable consequences!

More information about the organisation of the Technisches Hilfswerk can be found here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technisches_Hilfswerk).

In Denmark we have a unit similar to the THW called "Beredskabsstyrelsen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danish_Emergency_Management_Agency)" which has the similar tasks.
Denmark has conscription and in this connection 18-year-old men can choose between the Military or the "Beredskabsstyrelsen" for 4-6 months.

The German fire service also has a strong young people's section, no doubt because many of the fire brigades are volunteer ones.

The set was produced for Kaufhof, an online retail department store (link here: http://www.galeria-kaufhof.de/sales/aktionen/catdetail.asp so there's no marketing involved by Playmobil or risk for them.  As sets appear on eBay fairly regularly, maybe Kaufhof resell the sets to other sellers.

I imagine through local and national government depending on the scale and type of emergency.

The nearest the UK seems to have got to anything like the THW is the Civil Defence, although that was largely seen as useful during war.  For a time in the 1990s there were Community Defence Advisers (I was one) but I cannot recall any emergency leading to them  being used.

Now for the truck which is both a dropside and a tipper.  This is the only item in the set which requires stickers, the THW logo above the radiator, the headlights, red and white striping, front and rear number plates and rear lights all being stickers.  The cab roof is removeable for access to the cab and the flashing blue light is also separately removeable.
Title: Re: 4082 Mega THW set

With the rear body tipped there is access to a storage area on each side of the chassis.  In addition, although it's not specifically designed with this in mind, there is a central area between the main chassis members which could also be used for storage, e.g. of ropes or cables.

A word of warning, it is very easy to reach out and pick up the truck by taking hold of either side of the cab roof - don't, it comes off easily!

To give some idea of the size of the truck, here it is with a crew member posed alongside.

The cab comfortably takes a crew of two and there is storage for a fire extinguisher and a place for a tow-way radio in the dashboard.

Amongst the accessories is some 90g of "rubble" as a load for the truck or trailer.

A bit premature, here is a photo of the truck and trailer together.

Now for the trailer which, like the truck is both dropside and a tipper.  |It also has a tow hitch of its own, so a train of trailers could be towed if necessary.

On to the loader now.  This is BIG and doesn't really meet my needs for that reason, partly because of the space it takes up in a display and also because of the size a display would have to be to if it were not to dominate the scene.  For these reasons, I also bought the 4089 compact loader, review to follow.

The engine cover lifts up to reveal the engine block with some nice detail touches for what is a representational plain silver piece.  On one side of the block is a high voltage electricity warning and on the other a removeable filler cap for either the radiator or the hydraulic system.  Maybe the latter is more likely as the machine will depend so much on hydraulics for its operation.  Whichever it's for, it's bits of detail like this which makes Playmobil what it is and goes some way to mkae up for the poorly fitting hub caps on the lighting/equipment trailer.

The loader bucket is operated by the black handle and has four positions where it is fixed in place.  This means that the bucket can be filled with material and then the loader can be "driven", for example, to the truck and the bucket emptied into the truck without the "driver" having to hold the bucket mechanism in place.

Hello pingo,
I had this similar problem with other vehicles that incorporate the small wheel center caps you are referring to. The correction to this situation short of totally replacing them like Playmofire did, is I found a small metric nut socket that was just large enough not to go in to the center of the retainer fingers on the inside of the wheel cap. I warmed the center cap in hot water to make it pliable. Then you insert the socket into the center of the rear of the center cap to spread the fingers apart. Next you cool the center cap with the socket still in place under cold tap water. Remove the socket, & insert center cap into wheel. It should be noticeably more secure.

Here in the USA there are Eagle Scouts, Boy Scouts etc. Through these organizations start explorer groups for young boys that maybe interested in continuing into this line of work as they get older.

Young girls join the THW, and jugendfeuerwehr (young firefighters) too.   The attached picture is the Karlsruhe young THW.

Looking at the picture more closely, it looks as if boys are allowed to join as well as girls!

That's your opinion. Though I have seen it have a positive effect on young people in a lot of cases. Many of the junior firefighters that came from the Explorer programs, turned out to be the most dedicated, & well trained certified firefighters when they turned of age that I served with over the years.

Now for the crew.

A total of five klickies come with the set, four male and one female.  The first thing to notice about them is the detailed printing of the uniforms.  Printing a light colour, yellow, on to a darker colour, blue, is prone to problems as the darker colour is likely to show through, and this is the case on the more curved area of the arms and is probably most noticeable on the arms of the female figure.  On flatter surfaces such as the front of the figure, showing through of the base colour is not a problem.  As it is, the problem is only really noticeable in close-up photos.

I find that slightly offensive and a bit 'stereo typical' to be honest. Obviously you have formed these views based on a bad experience or very little knowledge of the Scouting movement, in other words ignorance. I am 30 this year and have been involved in the scouting movement for 23 years in one way or another and have never found it prejudiced or overly religious. I have been a leader of both cubs and scouts for 14 years of that.
In 23 years i have met many people from different backgrounds and walks of life. Quite a few of these have had physical disabilities or learning disabilities of some description but they are never treated any differently to anyone else. Infact we had a Cub with Downsyndrome for a year or two before he left to join a local athletics club. Along with the scouts perhaps you consider people with disabilities to be of no general use to the public good ? Just to draw your attention to what the scouting movement really do for the public good i went to the World Jamboree last year. Whilst there we met a group of scouts who were giving demonstrations on land mine awareness and how they help disable land mines in their country. If that's not serving the public good then i really don't know what is :hmm:. Dare i even mention what the Scouting movement did for my country during World War 2 or is that a taboo subject ?

Three different types of helmet come with the figures, two construction type helmets, two safety helmets (as used with then forester) and one fire brigade style helmet.

Lastly, on the crew and specially for Heather, a rear view of the female klicky showing the hair style.  You can also see the problem with the printing on the arms, although, as I said, this a very close shot.
Title: Re: 4082 Mega THW set

On to the accessories now.

In the equipment line there is a chainsaw, welding/cutting gear and two cutters of the sort found with the 3880 fire engine and used, for example, to free people trapped in vehicle accidents.  Obviously, while work with this equipment is in progress there is the need to keep the area clear of onlookers and other people who shouldn't be there, so two barriers each with two orange warning lights and two triangular warning signs are included.

I'm puzzled why two cutters are included rather than one set of cutters and one set of spreaders (as with the 3880). It isn't because the THW don't use spreaders because they do.  Maybe it's a sign that new extrication equipment is on the way in 2009, possibly combined cutters and spreaders.
Title: Re: 4082 Mega THW set
Post by: playmofire on September 30, 2008, 13:50:08
Especially where spillages or flooding are involved there is a need for cleaning up equipment and so this is included too.

The portable pump from the 3880 appears in THW livery for helping pump out flooded properties or wash down spillages on roads.  A shovel and brush can also be useful in these circumstances, so these are included too.  However, I'm not keen on the blue finish of these and so I'll be replacing them with the standard grey versions.  In addition, a spade is also included.

Some spillages need to be contained more than others, so two barrels are provided together with a folding trolley for moving them.  For shifting solid rubble and waste, there is a wheelbarrow.  The bucket, funnel and pouring can with a spout will be useful both in dealing with spillages and clearing up, while the fire extinguisher is handy to have by when dealing with inflammable materials.

A large metal box is provided for storing equipment.

To wind things up on the equipment side, there are two open top tool boxes, a lidded box, and two sets of tools, a seven piece mechanic's set and a six piece set containing a hydrant key.  Lastly, there is a length of chain for securing items or for pulling purposes, e.g. pulling tree branches away from the roadside.

One more piece which doesn't usually come with this set is the keyring figure, item 4091.

The catch for securing the sides and tailboard of the tipper and trailer may be of interest to anyone with the old 3476 truck with a catch(es) missing.  The part number is 30 61 5200.

Oops! forgot some parts.  There are a number of miscellaneous items, torch, radio, petrol can (it's in yellow which suggests it might be for foam concentrate, but maybe it was just a handy colour), axe, megaphone and a red bucket.

To wind up, value for money and what I call the "dangers" of the set.

The set itself cost me about £80 and postage on top from Germany took it to £100.  Looking at what I got, prices per item based on equivalent items from the main Playmobil range look as follows:

Equipment truck - £25

Lighting/equipment trailer - £25

Truck and trailer - say £30

Five figures - say £2.50 each - £12.50

Loader - £30

Total main items: £122.50

Value for money, therefore, very good.

Quality in general is up to Playmobil standards apart from the hub caps for the lighting/equipment trailer.  The drop sides of the truck and trailer are quite a soft plastic and one had become slightly curved in the box (they are not attached to the truck and trailer in the box), but once fitted to the trailer the curve quickly vanished.

The "dangers" of the set now.  The main one is the possibility of custom models and adding extra equipment.  An officer's car is needed (I know there is the Smart version available, but it is too modern for the time setting of my fire brigade) so a custom based on the blue family car is planned.  This will replicate my fire brigade staff car, but in THW livery.  (See http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=1579.0)  I have already got or have on order the parts for an extra trailer (I would like to make a canvas cover version), plus extra figures (e.g. the officer, the other female member), and the trailer with the 4323 set is just crying out to be converted into a THW trailer.

As regards extra equipment, well, THW members are trained to use BA (breathing apparatus), so we need four sets of BA, plus extra spades and brooms and shovels, work gloves all round (only the welder qualifies for work gloves in the set), timber ofr shoring up, chocks for stabilising vehicles, torches, radios, portable lighting gear - you see the problem?

Thanks for taking the time to follow this thread through and I hope you found it interesting.

Thanks for taking the time to put together such a extensive review of this big set . I only wish it would come to the US shore in some form or another. I guess it is hard enough to sell the regular sets here and to release such a large set could be risky or not financially lucrative . Thank you for such an exhaustive review Playmofire, even though I am not interested in collecting this theme I really enjoy reading about it and find the subject matter itself very interesting. I have also learned a lot about Fire/Rescue and the THW.

One of the beauties of the forum and having people with varied interests is that it does expand your horizons, make you pause and think and hopefully appreciate the diversity that is available to us here. BTW I noticed in several photos your figures had stands, I am assuming these are old stock and did not come with the kit? Do you know if they are still available?

Thank you, LHAAP, glad you enjoyed it.  As for buying the set, I'd say buy it if you can and while you can as it may not be available indefinitely.  On Galeria Kaufhof the only set I can find is the compact loader and their new special sets produced for them are farm ones.

Thank you, Rasputin, glad you enjoyed it.  The official THW blue is  RAL 5002, Königsblau (Kings Blue) (thank you Jochen for that).  Whether or not Playmobil have used strictly this colour or one very close to it (after all the blue trailer I use for the compact loader was produced in that colour a long time ago), I don't know.  Maybe a German member can confirm if it is the actual THW colour.  Even if it isn't exactly the same, it gives the right effect of a very smart livery.

Thank you, Gepetto, glad you found it useful and enjoyable.

The stands are currently available.  I'll check the part number and post it.  You can also buy them in white or black.

Hello Gordon  :)

An epic review, it must of taken ages to prepare. I have to say i really enjoyed reading it and looking at the pictures. I can see the 'dangers' of the set aswell Gordon but then we are both like minded . I can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeve and the direction in which you are going to take this new THW theme.

As allways truly amazing work on your part, thank you Gordon :)9

The part number is 30 24 3590 and I last bought some in June 2006.  If you wanted black ones, I have some spare and also a few white.

Got it, thanks Gordon.  (The black and white ones I've listed already.) I can't find what set it came with, though... do you know, or did you order it blind from DS?
