Title: 4745 mongolian warrior special
Post by: Ali Baba on July 24, 2010, 23:05:51
Finally it is here, the mongolian warrior. I was looking forward very much to get this one. Only out since this month here in Holland.

But..........it is very similar to the easter egge mongolian horseman (4926). The klicky is basicaly the same. The color pattern is different, but the colors are the same: yellow and red.

And the katana(japanese sword) is back!!!!!!! It was only available in the old ninja set, in gold/bronze. But that hasn't been in the shops for years, here. And later there was a katana in the ghost pirate theme. But that one was coppery and had chips out it. Now here it is, in silver/metal. Good news for customisers I think.

But............why has a mongolian warrior have a Japanese sword??????????? (Yeah, of course he nicked it on a plunder and pillaging trip)

Furthermore the katana holder doesn't work well. When you put the katana in, the center of gravity is wrong. It tends to hang rather horizontally, so the sword tips out easily. see pic 4.

Not a problem for displays. But it is a problem when a child plays with it.

But I still like it. I'm very happy with it. It looks great. You recognize it immediatly as a mongolian warrior. Well designed.

And it is nice to see something from the far eastern theme again. Very little far eastern playmobil has been made sofar. More of this to come? I hope so. Would love to see a Djengis Khan (with tent and other mongols).

Enjoy the pics!

Thanks for the review. This is a very nice klicky. Regarding the japanese sword option, I guess Playmobil has generally defined it as the asian sword instead of just japanese. I think they are not accurate in asian theme. The clothing of the black ninja, should instead be an ancient Chinese.

Is it a viking shield? I always thought of it as a generic roud shield. It can be whatever you want it to be, depending on what sticker you put on it.

Mind you, the early ones had stickers you had to put on yourself. No they are ready printed.

Please note that the easter egg mongolian has a different shield.

Hi Ali,

Again, a very nice review of a very nice special.

It's really useful to see him up close! Like the Conquistador, I knew I wanted to get a few of this guy, and your review has definitely confirmed that.

Cheers,

AndrewL

:P Thanks, I am no archeologist and it is true we can put whatever pattern we want on the shielf~~

I have ordered quite a few of those lovely stickers for the viking shields, they are just amazing.

Thank you for posting the rear view of the klicky, maybe we can put another sword in the left side :)

A scimitar would look more accurate, I think. They had these long thin curved swords. A katana is way to far off. Never seen a playmo scimitar in silver/metal though.

About the scabbard, I think this piece is unique to this special. Should have put that in the review.

Another good informative review, thanks Ali!

The red/yellow colors are quire accurate to the dyes available to the Mongols, so I don't mind the colors being the same as the 4926 Easter Egg Mongol. Indeed I haven't had the opportunity to get my hands on 4926 yet, it hasn't been released where I live and I'm not paying triple through eBay, but I'll be getting half a dozen of each when I can, and customising some. I hate paying for an egg I don't want anyway, I'd rather have the figure without it.

The katana is indeed a strange choice, I'd have gone with a scimitar, though the Mongols did use different styles of swords, some with just a small curve at the end not dissimilar to the Playmobil katana shape.

I hope that when the full Playmobil Club is up and running we can address questions about these design "flaws" to Playmobil and have reasoned explanations.

Here is the 4926 Mongol! Just to compare!!! No catana here... and it might not fit, but I would prefer the special's shield to be hold by this one...

Hey, that is the easter egg mongol. Without his horse. How much did you pay for it?

@ Martin,

Thanks. I don't like paying for the egg as well, but it was easter and I still had some pocket money.

The pumpkins for the Halloween sets are very expensive. A regular special kosts about 2-2,5 euro here. The dracula with pumpkin kosts 5 euro (DS price). So 2,5 - 3 euro's for the pumpkin alone!!!

5 euro for the pumpkin sets is already very good....we need to pay 9 Euro for it :hmm:

I think owning one egg is okay, and now the more playmobil we buy, the more useless eggs are taking up my place. :(

Mongols is an interesting notion. I thing these klickies would fit nicely as Attila the Hun's  army .....

Hannibal and mongols??? Don't you mean Atilla the hun?

Why? I like having different shields, and a smaller shield is more manouverable and easier to handle on horseback.

@ Ali, I bought a dozen 4942c Easter Egg Knights while on vacation in Caen (Normandy) last year, because I liked the figure, but I would have bought twice as many if not for the egg. It would be nice if Playmobil released the egg contents separately as a DS item a few months after Easter, ditto the Halloween Pumpkin contents, for those collectors who don't need dozens of empty plastic eggs.

... :hmm: but both shields are of the same size ... :hmm:

well, no disrespect, but I think at least sometimes the collectors need to accept that Playmobil is a profitoriented company (and thus wants to sell their eggs) and that the toy is for children in the first place ...  ;)

... btw. lots of swampy coloured / painted empty plastic eggs would make up a perfect alien hive diorama ...  ;)

I am afraid they are not Arizzo! The special shield is the same as the viking round shields, while the easter egg one is the small one that the indians carry in all sets!

Thanks for the review and the pictures, Ali Baba!

While I have no intention of collecting Mongolians, he does have some nice parts.  His silver helmet and his shield will be useful for some of my custom armies.

No disrespect, but Playmobil have already confirmed that pure profit is not their top concern. They could make more money than they do producing modern warfare sets, but have chosen not to (so far). They could also quite possibly make greater profiyts producing licensed products (Toyv Story, Harry Potter etc.) but again have chosen not to follow the dark side.

However I think they could quite possibly make more money selling the Easter Egg contents without the eggs, simply because some collectors would buy more if they didn't have to pay for the useless egg. If they don't have to make and fill the egg then their costs come down, and I'd happily buy the contents as a DS order.

It's a tricky one, but trying to sell people a product in a format they don't want isn't always the best or only way.
