Title: Luxplaymodays 2014 - detailed photos of 13 dioramas
Post by: Birdie on August 24, 2014, 12:44:58
It's a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon, so I've taken the time to upload detailed pictures of 13 of the dioramas displayed at the Luxplaymodays event of 2014.

Take a look, they're fabulous  Such original ideas and perfect execution.
I tried to add a photo of the creator(s) and the diorama title before the pictures. I think I missed two though...

A little photo of the seller's stalls in the smaller hall:

This was the first diorama to be seen as you entered the main hall. It's really unique!

This one was a real gem, but I didn't catch the name of the collector who made it. Does anybody know?

The Ostia harbour near Rome, it was breathtaking! Very inventive use of materials to create a Roman town.

I loved this one. It almost seems as though Brubil actually used all of the Playmobil animals for his Noah's ark  :o

Here's a translation of what the sign says (let me know if I've made any mistakes):

Collector Bruno Peeters, city of Boom in Belgium

"I'm a 57-year-old boy, who hopes to grow into an adult one day. But my doctor says: "Since you're infected with the Playmobil-virus, that will never happen!" He's probably right.
My life changed when I bought my first Playmobil boxes fifteen years ago. I was fascinated by the quality of this toy, and fast became a passionate collector. With Playmobil I can satisfy my need for creative work. Through the Internet I have access to the world of collectors, who share the same passion with me, and who have become a family for me in the meantime.

In 2006 I carried out my first diorama of the Roman world and I displayed it at the collector's exhibition in Wolfsburg. Further exhibitions of my dioramas followed, on different themes, at many fairs for collectors, and also at a Playmobil exhibition in The Netherlands. Another highlight was the co-operation with the author Richard Unglik, who used photos of my Playmobil presentation of a "Trip around the World" for the book "Le Tour de Monde".

My latest big project is Noah's Ark, which you can see here. It's a free interpretation of the world famous narrative, represented form the point of view of a child. You've probably never seen this many Playmobil animals together in one scene. Would you like to count them? Or do you feel inspired to once build a diorama of your dream scene? That would be a great compliment for me. Maybe next time I can admire your diorama at this exhibition!"

This one was my absolute favourite of the day  :)
It reminded me of the Museum of Natural History in New York City. Not only was the building designed and styled to perfection, the different halls all had little scenes and funny stories to discover. The marble floor, the attention to detail (there are restrooms, there's an office, a lab, a storage depot, elevators, a restaurant...), the lighting, the marvellous idea of using all of those animals and historic sets for a museum display...

Next in line was the "Fairies in danger" diorama by Incador and Ratatouille. It was magical, especially the lake  :) And great to see those new fairy sets displayed like that.

This is a diorama of a music academy in celebration (made by Anita, with the help of Lucie). I was in awe of the custom made buildings and the theater looked stunning. They're performing Snowwhite and the seven dwarves  ;D

These diorama builders came all the way from Spain.
Their display of Hannibal's invasion was huge, but still it was detailed to perfection.

Are you still up for more?  :)

This one was Mitri's favourite. It was made by four Belgian collectors, and it is pretty cool to see a genuine Belgian theme displayed here. It's a brewery from around 1925, complete with a very lifelike Belgian bar, or a 'brown café', as we call it. There's also a sort of fancy fair with freaks, circus artists, a fortune-teller, a sack race and plenty of amazing customized figures and carts.

By this time I had already picked a favourite, but really this one is just off the charts  :)  There are custom buildings made of Victorian, western and medieval steck parts, in such a wonderful variety of design and colour. And then there's the boats   It was a very big diorama, so I had to use the zoom a lot, which did  no favours for the quality of the pictures. Still, I hope you can see the brilliance!

The last one...

I didn't get a photo of the collector's name or country of origin. Maybe someone else can help me out with that?
It's an awesome medieval castle and Viking village. Kids were shouting with excitement over this one  :)

That was it, another splendid LuxPlaymoDays has come and gone. It was a very inspiring edition this year.

One other thing: I met Elise (or Elisa?) who did the beautiful Victorian dioramas in the Playmobil exhibition in Speyer. I was very happy to tell her in person how much I admire her work. She also sold me some wonderful sets. These pictures of her dioramas were taken at Speyer:

Wonderful displays, thanks for posting all the great photos for us. Lots of amazing work there in so many themes. Love the museum, it's a great collection of themes in one place. Love the ark of course by my dear friend Brubil. He does have most if not all of the different animal molds if not every color variation, and of course a few wonderful customs there as well. That harbor city scene was very interesting for the building combinations and colors used, very realistic in it's way.

Wow, so many great dioramas.. I'll need to look at these pictures several times more to really see all the details. This is amazing, really! Stuff is done here that I did not think was even possible!

You are right about that diorama that you prefer, it really goes way beyond what would be expected to be possible.  :o :o :o :o

Wow!!! Those are all absolutely lovely! I especially liked the Roman harbour city. The custom buildings were beautifully done, to look like roman architecture.

But my favorite was the museum! Absolutely awesome! I've been planning a museum myself, though of course not nearly on that scale, and I had some of the same ideas for what to display, including the giant mammoth skeleton in the center with the balconies surrounding it. Now everyone is going to think I'm copying. But it was truly magnificent.
