Windshield replacement on 3203 Construction Truck?

My kids inherited my much loved 1970's classic orange Construction Truck 3203. It had a crack in the windscreen, and the other night I found a large portion of the yellowed, brittle windshield had cracked off.

For nostalgia's sake, I'd like to repair it. Does anyone have any experience, suggestions or gentle guidance? Is the part even available?

The part may well be available as the truck was a classic re-release recently in the add-ons catalogue.  You need part number 30 02 1100.
