*************************************************************************
Registration for this event is now closed and the final list of partners has been drawn up. :)
*************************************************************************
The idea is that each member who wants to participate creates a custom figure as a secret gift for another member. 8-)
On other forums which hold these types of events, the people involved are sometimes given the names of their intended recipients, but I tend to favour a more random approach as it seems more fun - and also fairer - not knowing exactly who will receive your figure. I am willing to act as a central receiving point (I'm based in the UK) and to redistribute the gifts. :)
Edit: The above idea has been altered slightly since first conception, since a number of members voiced a preference for knowing exactly who would be receiving their custom figure. All participants will now be given the postal addresses of their selected recipients (privately) and will be able to post their gifts directly to that person.
The figures can be as simple or elaborate as you wish - it can be a classic custom created only by swapping of original Playmobil parts, or you can make it more unique with some paint or self-made parts. No fancy boxes or gift-wrapping will be needed, but you can of course include a small card with your klicky. :yup:
I know that Christmas is traditionally the time to hold such a gift swap, but this holiday period is a very busy time of year for most of us due to family commitments. It's also more difficult to predict postal delivery times in December, and there's more chance that small items can get lost due to the increase in packages being mailed at that time of year. :-\
Ideally, I would like to hold this event in November as a celebration of PlaymoFriends entering its third year on the web! :confetti: <:D :bdaycake: :**: :woohoo:
Some of the members here have already expressed an interest in this idea by PM to me. :)
Please post to this topic if you are enthusiastic about joining in PlaymoFriends Birthday Klicky-Swap. :D

I'd be happy to join in, but if you dont know who your sending to, how do you know what you should make?
TT
-
Sounds like fun, Sylvia ... but er ... if you're going to do all the distributing; will it not be incredible expensive from your side ???
Bogro
-
Count me in, sounds like fun (and cheap for me since I live in the UK)
It'd be easier to create something appropriate if we know who the recipient will be - they needn't know who made the custom klicky (though you will).

Good idea Martin!!

good initative dear

You can count on me too.

I'd be happy to join in, but if you dont know who your sending to, how do you know what you should make?
You should just make whatever you feel like making. I'm sure whoever receives your klicky will appreciate it regardless of the theme or style it belongs to. :)

If necessary, I could use some of the PF membership money to defray the postage costs - it would really depend on how many members decided to take part. (This is one of the reasons why the subscription system was set up in the first place - to aid in funding projects (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=106#msg664) which benefit our community.)
It'd be easier to create something appropriate if we know who the recipient will be - they needn't know who made the custom klicky (though you will).
I understand where you're coming from, and to a certain extent, I agree. Last time we held an event like this, it was left up to the organisers to randomly select the recipients and also to distribute the gifts. No-one knew who was going to get their customised figure until it was revealed at the end. This added an extra element of surprise to the whole event.
But if everyone is in agreement that they would prefer to know the identity of the person they are making their custom for, then of course we can do it that way. :yup:
That method, however, does remove the necessity of having a central receiving and re-distribution point. It would make more sense in that instance for each member to send their item directly to the recipient since they will already know who that person is. ;)
I can collect the postal addresses of all members taking part and relay them via PM to the people who need them. :)
-
And perhaps every person can mention his main interests with his adress? :)
Do we then need to put something with season greetings in it like with christmas, or does it stand off side the holiday season? Lastly, perhaps +/-a month notification to who you are sending too or when to ship your custom, etc.
this should be fun ;D
TT
-
BTW - you can count the count in
I would prefer to know whom I am making it for. That way it can be more appropriate.
Allthough, like you said Sylvia, I think the recipient would like it anyhow
Bogro

And perhaps every person can mention his main interests with his adress? :)
Maybe a little detective work, searching intro topics or last posts would help people get the same information? ;)
Do we then need to put something with season greetings in it like with christmas, or does it stand off side the holiday season?
I thought it would be nice if we can do this before Christmas. Sometime in November would be ideal because we can use the event as a celebration of PlaymoFriends' second birthday. :D In that case, you could just include a general gift tag/card with the figure, rather than something seasonal. For example, sometimes people like to include extra information when their customs are based on actual people from history or something similar.
Lastly, perhaps +/-a month notification to who you are sending too or when to ship your custom, etc.
We'll have to try and work this out as soon as possible. :yup:
-
ok, thanks :)

I liked the Secret Santa concept on PMB
maybe you find some inspiration there for the newbies
lot of members signing on to this initiative here have praticipated that event several times
just some thoughts
btw . Thank you Sylvia for taking the responsibility to organise this
will take lot of time
take all good care

A week since the last post... I think it's time to bump this topic. ;)
Thank you to the following people who have agreed to participate in this event:
tanotrooper
CountBogro
Martin Milner
arab warrior
macgayver
Little Jo
Tiermann
Surely we have some other regular members who'd like to join in? ???
-
I'm in ;D
PS: what about yourself, Sylvia? and what about Richard?
and maybe this would be a good occasion to reenact David ;)
-
Surely we have some other regular members who'd like to join in? ???
It seems like there are quite a lot of regular 'members' who dont like to join in latley, so as a result of this i will not be taking part. Its quite hard to find the enthusiasm to go to the trouble of sharing any of my creations with the rest of the forum of late.
Tim
-
and maybe this would be a good occasion to reenact David ;)
David is quite welcome to take part, just as much as everyone else here is.
However, he hasn't logged in for over a year, so I think it's pretty unlikely he'll want to get involved with this.
I will, of course, support this swap event by creating a custom gift!
It's not always easy to find enough time to devote to the forum lately because I have a lot going on at home (and I'm sure I'm no exception and many other people find themselves in the same situation ;)), but I do try my best to keep a regular eye on things here and to stay enthusiastic about Playmobil. :)
-
Sylvia,
Count me in. I really like this adventurous idea. I have to admit I also spend less time on any of the forums because I'm very busy lately, but my playmoheart still beats :yup:
Cheers,
DD.
-
This year, I'm afraid you will have to count me out. With trying to move house it's been a fraught year and, having thought about whether to join in I've decided not to, rather than saying I will and then having to drop out. Having a trip to the dentist last week, two trips this week, plus one next week and another two in December, the last one the day before we go to Malta, have also influenced my decision!
-
I have been AWOL for a while, and may not be around much (at least until I find a new job - long story) but this sounds like fun, and I have not done anything Playmo-related in a long time, so this will force me to crack apart some little plastic people once again. I'm in!
-
I think it would be a good idea to remind people that it is not necessary to spend a great deal of money or copious amounts of time on the custom figure they intend to send as a gift. Keep it small and simple, if possible. :)
I don't want to dampen anyone's spirits or be discouraging about the whole event, but sometimes items do go missing in the post... or the recipient fails to thank the sender... and that can lead to a disheartening experience for the creator of the gift. :( Hopefully, nothing bad like that will happen this time. :crossed:
I also think it would be a really good idea for each person to make a photographic record of their custom figure before they post it off. This way if the recipient of the gift is unable to take pics, the sender can still share their custom work with the rest of the members at a later date. ;)
This year, I'm afraid you will have to count me out.
No problem, Gordon. :)
-
just to confirm I'm in, since we got a mail. I'm looking forward to the exchange! :yup: (creepy emoticon)

I would like to, but Its hard for me to do something simple. Generally, my customs take quite a bit of time and its hard to know when Ill get parts and materials for the projects. I dont think Ill be able to whip something out by November. Sorry. Its sounds like a fun Idea.

I am already quite busy, even at this part of the year.... 8}

Hi!
Had an idea...
Count me in too!
Jimbo
-
Hi I'm interested in doing this. Is it too late? Shall I send you (Sylvia) my address via PM? And, do I mail to you, or directly to the recepient? (If you're the distributor, I'll include extra for forwarding postage).
-Tim

Hi I'm interested in doing this. Is it too late? Shall I send you (Sylvia) my address via PM?
No, it's not too late. Happy that you want to get involved! :D
And yes, please send me your address. :)
And, do I mail to you, or directly to the recepient? (If you're the distributor, I'll include extra for forwarding postage).
At the beginning, I was suggesting we have a completely anonymous swap with no-one knowing who would receive their gift. This idea has since been changed because many members voiced a preference for knowing the identity of their recipient, in order to make the custom more personal. This now means having a central distributor would be a waste of time and money. It makes much more sense for people to post their items directly. (I shall have to go back and edit that first post I made because I think it's causing too much confusion.)
Could everyone else who has put their name forward in this topic please send me their postal address by PM or e-mail so I can pass it on to whoever is eventually selected to be their partner for this event.
Thanks! :)

That's a very good point. I hadn't considered that some people might need to order parts or accessories from the DS, and that alone can take a few weeks to organise. :-\
At this stage, I am thinking of making the recommended cut-off date for posting out gifts somewhere around the last week of November/first week of December, in order to give everyone sufficient time to work on their figures.
If anyone is still unsure as to whether they want to be a part of this, please try and make you decision in the coming week so we can work out who each person will be mailing to as soon as possible.
I'm sorry if anyone is feeling under pressure or rushed by the sudden announcement of this event. I really should have started to organise something earlier. :-[
-
Still in ;)
-

Perhaps we might help each other out? Most of us will have bits and pieces around. If some one needs a part he could allways try and ask?
Bogro
-
Also - customs don't have to be particularly elaborate
You can do a lot by just being thoughtful about who it is going to, I can't say I've ever met a klicky I didn't like
-
I'm going to be working out the partner/recipient list today (Friday 26th). <:>
Here's the current list of members taking part:
Sylvia
tanotrooper
CountBogro
Martin Milner
arab warrior
macgayver
Little Jo
Tiermann
Arizzo
deadeye dick
Captain Henry
Customizer
socrates
Jimbo
Timotheos
Any last minute additions can still be added. ;)
Once again, thank you all for supporting this event. :)9
It's going to be a lot of fun looking at pics of everyone's creations. :camera: :)
-
Registration for this event is now closed and the final list of partners has been drawn up. :)
Many of you will now have received a PM with the name and postal address of your recipient.
I still have to obtain/confirm a few mailing addresses but will forward them to those members still waiting on details as soon as possible. ;)
-
Any deadlines for finishing and sending the item to your partner?
Any special "instructions" about posting photos of send/received figures?
-
Any deadlines for finishing and sending the item to your partner?
My recommendation is for all items to be on their way to the recipients before the last day of November. If you finish the custom much earlier than this, you should just send it when you're ready to.
I would appreciate it if each member could send me a confirmation by PM or email when they have posted their gift. If they would like me to, I can pass this info on to their partners, or I can keep it a secret if they would prefer the actual timing of the arrival to be more of a surprise. I won't reveal who is sending to who, of course. ;)
Any special "instructions" about posting photos of send/received figures?
This is open to suggestions from everyone, but I think we should give the person receiving the figure the opportunity to post the first photos. Once this has happened, the sender can post any additional pics they have taken, if they would like to.
If, for whatever reason, the member receiving the custom is unable to take photos of their gift (as has sometimes happened on other forums holding these types of events), the sender can post the photos they have taken instead. Communication of this to the recipient should be made before going ahead, just in case. :)

Hello, Sylvia ...
OK! I mailed my gift today (14 November 2007) !!!
Is this where we're supposed to tell you?

Hello, Jimbo ...
Did you ship locally in the States, or internationally?
I shipped internationally, and was blown away by the postal charges!
All the best,
Richard
===

Hi Richard,
I shipped internationally, and the charges were only
$1.30!! I wonder if that means it will arrive NEXT
November ???
It probably will not be anonymous though, with all
the customs forms I had to fill out 8}
I sure hope they don't try to get it there by horse back :hmm:
Best regards

WOW!
That's great, Jimbo!
I had to pay $30.00 postage from the United States Virgin Islands to Europe! ... 8}
Please let me know how quickly your package arrives (and how you sent it), because I know that I NEVER EVER want to "air mail" anything again from here to anywhere! ... :'(
All the best,

I mailed my package on the 7th to an undisclosed nation in Europe.
It cost me US $1.80 and I had to fill out no custom forms! The mail clerk promised 5-10 day delivery. I didn't completely believe her about the lack of custom forms. But, I've mailed to Canada, Singapore, and China before without needing forms either.
Richard, the US $30 you paid probably includes the gas to get the clerk in his motor boat from the USVI to the nearest post office in Florida.

Thanks for the info, Tim ...
But, for some reason it doesn't make me feel any better about the $30.00 postal charges that I had to pay ... :'(
I've attached a photo of the postal clerk taking my mail out to the waiting mail boat. (He promised that they'll put it on an airplane as soon as they reach the mainland.)
All the best,
Richard

That's a really good picture, Richard!
Does anybody know how international mail works?
Does the receiving country receive a portion of the stamp proceeds from the sending country? Does the receiving country deliver without charge, as part of a trade agreement?
And, are customs forms something that the sending country requires, or the receiving? UK seems to require customs slips on anything leaving. But, maybe that is because the US demands it, whereas Europe doesn't? So I can mail to Europe without a customs form?

Thanks, Tim, for your kind words about the picture I took of our Playmobil pirate postal clerk ... 8}
Sorry, I don't have a clue about how any postal system works (or doesn't work).
I do know that I went back to our island post office (armed with the information that you and Jimbo sent about postal charges).
And, they told me that the reason our postal charges from the Virgin Islands to Europe are so expensive is because we don't have a "surface mail" option ... :'(
I guess that they are concerned that "surface mail" here in the Caribbean might get hijacked by those scurvy pirates! ... ;)
So ... it doesn't look like that there will be any wonderful Christmas presents shipped from St. Thomas to any of my friends this year! ... :P
All the best,
Richard
-
And, are customs forms something that the sending country requires, or the receiving? UK seems to require customs slips on anything leaving.
We have to put a customs label on anything that is sent outside of the European Union. :yup:
It's my understanding that the main requirements (regarding customs documentation) are set down by the receiving country rather than the one sending, but I think it's probably a mixture of both.
Some countries have very strict regulations regarding incoming mail. Canada, for example, insist on the sender's address being written in the top left corner of any package, rather than the reverse side. The US also prefer this, but (unlike Canada) I don't think they return as many incorrectly labelled packages to the sender. This is based on info I've picked up from chats with my local postmaster over the years.
I'm now in the habit of putting my return address on the front of all mail I send outside of the UK, just to be on the safe side. :P

Finally got my custom finished and packaged today, and I expect it to go out on tomorrow's tide... ;) This was fun, it has been a while since I have played with my toys, and we made this into a family event with Sirena and Merboy helping out as well...

When you look at the global situation, since the advent of the interweb, posting of letters has dropped off thanks to email, but posting of small packages and larger parcels has grown thanks to internet shopping. I'm sure a portion of this increase in parcels is international.
So the postal services are missing out on the easy money from letters, and have to lug about much bulkier loads, then try to deliver them when people are home to answer the door (actually the RM don't bother, and generally call during weekday office hours when people are most likely to be out, but I was thinking logically).
The UK Postal service, the "Royal Mail" though it's not owned or run by the Queen, has taken several downturns in customer service in recent years.
Despite the recent postal strikes (in which I lost a couple of eBay purchases altogether), and despite the closure of many local sub-post offices, they're running a series of TV ads to show what a range of wonderul services they provide.

In the US, UPS (United Parcel Post) and FedEx are competing neck and neck with the US post office. I'm generally satisfied with US mail (jokes about its slowness seem to trace to an earlier era). But, I no longer believe the post office is a needed government monopoly. UPS and FedEx both turn a profit, but provide a parcel delivery network nearly as extensive as the post office and likely more accountable.
I'm not eager to pay bills on-line, but if letter mailing became prohibitively expensive, I'm sure we'd find some method, like PayPal, to pay electronically without giving everybody direct access to the bank account or credit card (service providers in the states want auto-debit arrangements that strike me as dangerous if you decide to quit the service but it doesn't want to let you go).

What's happening with our Playmofriends Custom Klicky Swap Event?
The only two members who have posted that they have sent their "swaps" off are Cap'n Henry and me!
The only member who has posted that he has received anything is Tim (Timotheos)!
Am I just being impatient? Or, is this event not moving along as it should?

Thanks for the gentle reminder, Richard. ;D
Some members have advised me on their progress by PM. :)
Deadeye dick's klicky was complete and he was hoping to post it on the weekend just passed.
Customizer's was 80% complete last Friday, so it should be in the post soon.
My gift has finally gone in the post today! *phew*
I sent it by registered mail because I didn't want to risk it getting lost en route. 8}

Thanks for the gentle reminder, Richard. ;D
Hello, Sylvia ...
I guess that my reminder wasn't very "gentle" ... Sorry ... :-[
I'm a little concerned, because I put it in the post fourteen days ago and haven't heard anything about it arriving yet ... :hmm:
For what these postal bandits charge here in the tropics, I would have expected them to find a faster carrier pigeon ... ;D
Hmmm ... Come to think of it, I haven't seen any pigeons. I wonder if they used a carrier seagull ... ???
Can't imagine that carrier seagulls would be very reliable ... ::)
Well, this is turning into a real "nail-biter" ... 8}
All the best,

Hi Folks,
It seems I am to dumb to participate in such a complex thing as swapping gifts via mail :-\ ;) (and writing addresses ... ::) ).
I'm not worthy - I'm not worthy - I'm not worthy.
Please allow me to torture myself ... ;)
Explanation: I did sent my gift for someone in .... europe ... ;) at the end of last week - but forgot to write the destination country on the envelope (very clever indeed ::)) - consequently it today returned to my home. It will be posted again by tomorrow (this time WITH destination country). I hope it will reach the recipient in time before X-Mas ... :-\
To my recipient: I am very sorry for the delay :( - but it seems that my IQ somehow matches more that of a reindeer than that of a Secret Santa ... <*) ;)

And to prove once more that life is unfair, the idiot gets rewarded. :woohoo: :yippee: :woohoo:
I got my parcel the day before yesterday and will post some pics of it the next days ;).
cheers
Sven
PS: I like these new smilies ....

Could everyone please confirm that they have shipped their gifts? It seems there are quite a few people still waiting to receive theirs.
There's also several people still waiting to hear whether their packages have arrived or not, so please let us know immediately when you've received one. It can be very worrying for the sender, not knowing if the item has arrived safely or perhaps gone missing.
Please don't forget to take photos of your gifts when you receive them! If you don't have access to a camera or there's some other problem preventing you from posting photos, do go ahead and inform the sender of the gift so they have the opportunity to share their creations with the rest of the members.
Everyone's put a lot of time and thought into making their customs, and we all want to see the end results! :D

Hi Sylvia,
I sent my gift a month ago to Europe,
and am now confirming my concern that
the USPS may not know where that continent
is. ???
Still hopeful

@jimbo: There is a fancy difference at least between Germany and the US:
- From Germany to the US:
airmail: 2-4 days
surface mail: 5-8 days - From the US to Germany:
airmail: 3-6 days
surface mail: 4-6 weeks 8}
...and in both cases, the airmail/priority mail doubles the cost.
...just wanted to say that it might just take some more time.
never understood, why the german parcels are that fast on the surface... ???
best socrates
P.S.: Received one secret santa :inlove: and succesfully shipped one. :elf:
P.P.S.: pictures of mine are in progress... :-[

Thanks for the encouragement Socrates,
maybe I will not worry as much.

My Custom Klicky arrived, just in time for Christmas, beautifully wrapped and safely boxed and packaged! Many thanks Arizzo!
I'll be introducing him properly in a photostory soon, so I won't say much more here except that he's a really cool pirate with custom gold armbands and armed to the teeth.

I'm really glad the guy did make it in time for X-mas ;D
