Cora Pearl

Born in Plymouth, Eliza Emma Crouch found her self all alone in London after an unhappy childhood in a dysfunctional family. Young and vulnerable she made the acquaintance of Robert Bignell, owner of a renowned pleasure establishment, the Argyll Rooms. It wasn’t long before she came to realise that the life of the common street girl was a tragic one with no future and set her mind to become a woman with only a number of hand picked lovers, ones who were rich and could provide the luxury and financially means for her to take care of herself. On a trip to Paris she fell in love with the city. She adored its rich history, culture and course it’s colourful night life. |She did make it her home, changed her name to Cora Pearl and it wasn’t long before she became one of the most celebrated courtesans in Paris, being the mistress of powerful aristocrats and princes.

Whilst she made Paris her home she would return to London to visit all the fashionable places like Harrods, a department store that in her former life was only reserved for the rich and famous, definitely not for a vulnerable Covent Garden street girl. And yet here she was dressed in the latest fashion and expensive furs, waltzing through the grand doors of the famous London store, buying whatever she wanted since she was after all the one and only Cora Pearl

Miss Havisham from Charles Dickens Great Expectations !

Mrs Havisham was a wealthy spinster, once jilted at the altar on her wedding day, who insisted on wearing her wedding dress for the rest of her life. She lived in a ruined mansion with her adopted daughter, Estella. Dickens described her as looking like "the witch of the place" !
