Title: How to make steck flooring?
Post by: Ali Baba on June 13, 2010, 21:47:21
As far as I can see there wasn't a thread about this topic yet, so here it is.

Like many others I do not have enough flooring for my steck project. I was thinking about making my own.

I was thinking about using plywood with plastic bars stuck to the underside. These bars would have to be shaped at the ends to hook into the wall pieces.

Or does anybody know where you can buy ABS (*) panels or sheets?

(*) abs is the plastic playmobil is made of, right?

There are a number of suppliers in the UK and I can look out some addresses for you.

I was going to try plywood all the way. Havent looked into it yet though but I'll let you know of my experiences. Very curious how yours fare.

Playmofire, I'd appreciate that. Thanks.

Gis, plywood is layered and that shows. Maybe solid board will look better. Like the wood of cigar boxes. It's tropical hardwood I think.

Might try something this evening.

Here's a link to the only supplier I now know of in the UK:

http://www.ema-models.co.uk/catalogue/0006-sheet-materials.html

I have some sheets of ABS which are not needed, but they are rather long and may need cutting up for sending but if you want them, then they can be yours.

Thanks playmofire, I might take you up on that later.

First I tried some woodwork. I do not have a jigsaw, so I made due with a normal saw (see pic) and some knives (see pics) for the first rough cut (pic 1)

I used my multi tool to clean it up (pic 2) and to cut the wall braces (pic 3). Now it is late. Tomorrow I will work on this some more.

Mind you, this is only a prototype. The parts are a bit on the rought side. I'm only exploring the techniques involved. Might buy some extra tools. Hmmmm, nice.

I used 4 mm plywood, 3 layers. My room smells like scourched wood now.

This is a very interesting topic!! I always have trouble with flooring my steck designs as I give my buildings different shapes and always realisisng that there is need for a different floor pattern for my needs!

Keep the ideas coming!!!

Pic 1 + 2, removed top layer of the plywood to receive the wall brace.

Pic 3 + 4 brace glued in place and slot carved out.

Next one has to be more precise. I wanted one withe the slots. Bigger floor pieces have these braces on both sides and give extra strength to a building. It is of course much easier to make floor pieces without the braces, so they just sit in place.

Well, finally found some time to finish my first steck floor. A bit of a miracle really, because it's 30 degrees (Celsius, 400 Fahrenheit) outside and we are having friends over for a BBQ tonight.

Anyway, I used woodglue to glue the parts together. With a grinder bit in my multitool I adjusted the slots, so the floor would fit on a wall.

Some of my findings: you'll have to work rather accurately, because otherwise you'll get a wonky bit of floor. That is only a problem with this bit of half floor, because it is fitted to the wall only on one side, on two brackets. Square pieces of floor  or those long ones are probably easier.

It's probably best to make some cardboard templates for the parts, so you can make the parts more accurately. This prototype was often done a bit freehand. Especially the cutting of the slots.

Next time I'll make a bit of square flooring. I allready bought a pattern paper at a doll house shop, to cover it with.

Thanks guys. Maybe this week I'll do some sawing in the garden. It's pretty nice weather here. So no wooddust in my room upstairs.

@playmo1989: have you not heard of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves?

Mr Ali Baba I admire your patience to make this flooring which looks very nice by the way. When i was a kiddo and there was no ebay and very few steck pieces i had , I used to glue steck toasts to small pieces of brown cardboard to make such stands, they looked awful but I did have flooring all round my petite fortification and for my lit army , they were only bout 30 nuremberg guards , bless them all !!!!

It was the first custom I made. As I'm doing a fairy tale project I decided to call him Ali Baba.

Thanks Flatcat and Giorginetto,

I'm building a flying castle. The first floor shouldn't be made of wood. And do not have mucht flooring to begin with (although I now have 4 houses, 2 castles, 1 schuldturm, and 3 loose roundtowers).

I had some free time wednesday, so I did some sawing in the garden. I can now make an improved version this weekend. More pics coming up.

Hi Ali Baba

Your floor looks very nice!
I have found that Baltic birch is excellent for that kind of work as well,
although solid hardwood would be very good too.  Just for fun, you might
like to make each "board" separately.

Would you mind if I tried your method?

Again, very well done!

Best regards,
Jimbo
