Post by: cachalote on January 18, 2009, 02:31:29
some of the new knights (the specials) maintain the same box format.
others seem to come in a totally new re-designed box (no blue frame).

4684, Schwertwächter, february

4689, Schwanenritter, july

4774, Mitnehm-Barbarenfeste, january

4775, Mitnehm-Drachenritterturm, january

WOW! :o

These look really good! 8-)

I like the Swan Knight but it has been totally eclipsed by those "Wolf" Knights (or whatever they are known as). The tarnished effect on the bronze/gold armour is fantastic. I hope that it looks as impressive in real life as it does on those box pics.

Also very pleased with the new box design with edge to edge images on all sides.

Thanks for the close-up pics, cachalote. :)9

The 4807-4812 Wolf Knights are a kind of self-contained sub-theme, and I think they're great, I'm certainly going to be getting several of each when they reach the UK, which unfortunately isn't going to be in 2009.

These chaps are clearly intended to be individual personalities, and with just these (and someone to fight) I can see boys having a great time. My main concern is that it's all so combat-oriented with no signs of a life beyond battle. Because there are six in the set, and each comes with one part of the missile for the catapault, Playmobil seem to be aiming for a collectible theme, more than previously. The merfolk are the same.

:yup: i agree wit you sylvia, the new box design looks great.
i think this is the right way to "appela" to consumers - beautiful boxes instead of big ones (you always get disappointed when you open them).  :'(

Again - thanks for the great pictures. Some of the shields are quite nice looking. Unfortunately I am a little tired of knights, and knights, and even more knights why I find these "novelties" a little less than inspiring.I hope that, if there are more knights coming this fall there will be more than just
- one knight with mercenaries
- one knight with catapult/ canon
- one knight with this
- one knight with that

Hi Michael
Most of us serious medieval collectors are disappointed with the drift of Playmobil's "knights" theme.  You can still find some remnants available, like the knight family, which despite some people not liking the actual figures, represents a rural knight with his wife and two children.

But, yeah, much of the resources to make good medieval themes are fading, like with the vikings off-market.  I have a medieval winter scene that I need to clean up and photograph.

You can still do a lot with medieval.  Unfortunately, you have to scrounge from other themes and have some access to recently discontinued sets.

Actually, they are - they are promoted with a remark "Sammle Spass" which transfers roughly to "fun to collect".
Besides; it isn't only the stones that need collecting; the wolves provide the musscle to pull the catapult. In the same way the large seahorses provide the pulling power for Neptunes' ride in the merfolk theme.

As to the demise of the medieval theme and only the knight theme (with just knights and more knights) remaining; I think that has been explained more then enough times. That's a marketing thing and unless we can change the buying habits of millions, I don't think it's going to change  :'(.

I like them all.  The tarnished look is interesting,
and the Swan Knight is great :yup:

Best regards,

Thanks for the pics and the information cachalote!  I don't see myself collecting these new knights, but I'll probably buy one of the Swan Knight Specials and I like a couple of the Wolf Knight shields.  Also, I think the black feather on 4807/4810 is new, which I can use.  I'm still curious about how the tarnished gold armor looks in person.

Interesting thing about that knight's shield, the red label (the crenellated bit at the top of his shield) indicates that he's an elder son, and heir to his father's coat of arms when his father dies.

We've had a white Swan knight before, but I don't think we've had a black swan knight?

Thanks again for the great pics. I am sure that a lot of work, research und copy-paste went into this project and the kids will love but I can call this issue settled for me. Was I really thinking that…..? The advent calendar looks quite nice, though.

mmm - I am not that sure anymore. I must admit that whatever the otcome - there are some items in the new theme at least. For the rest ... I reserve my comment until I've seen it more close up and for real.
It is very Fantasy, though ...
I wonder what Saskia makes of it - after all; she is a Dragon lady

I'm going to have to take your side also Bogro! It favors the current Pirate theme Spanish harbor lighthouse design  :-\! I will need to see the actual product before rendering an opinion  ???! Looks like more stand alone designs, not being able to be expanded through DS any longer  :'(!

Is that a baby dragon ? There really are some great parts in here . some need to be thrown away ( well maybe just put away ) and as a whole i am not to impressed with Playmobils decision on this new theme . At least they ( the accountant or marketer ) could have given us the option of just using all the building parts for other sets .  I just hate to be limited and not being able to show the kids how to customize or modify a design .

Some interesting new parts like the helmets, the horse armour and the fantasy shields, but I'll be giving the towers a miss.

I do like the hood I can see on one figure, somewhat like the lego hoods. I hope they come in a range of colours to match the cloak/cape colours.

I will have to go along with Bill and Bogro, I am not too impressed and the colors are awful but who knows, maybe its the lighting :D. I will be hunting pickelhaube and beatnik toys it appears. Thank you very much for the photos, it gives us time to plan and save!

mmm ... I am disappointed. Terribly disapointed.  :'(.
The castle and tower look more as if they are from one of the very cheap brands ...
The figures look nice, though. I might order them through DS, but I doubt I will buy many sets of them .... snik snif ...  :'(

The Dragon and Wyverns look nice though.

Great, now even the mounted knights have bazookas! Do like the rock stairs though and the towers could be signal towers but I agree with Rasputin in that I do not like to have my options limited.

I really really really like the dragons. (did I mention that I really like them  ;))

As for the rocks and towers. They look like cheap plastic to me, I'm hoping that they'll look better when I see them for real.

The towers look exactly like some toys already at Target.

I like the dragons too, even if they are almost too evil looking to fit Playmobil's style.

Notice the guy with the hood.  Also, I like the platemail barding on the horse.  It resembles 15th century armor.

:( I have to say that none of these new sets really excite me at all. It doesn't look like you can make different setups with these towers and rocks. I know system-x isn't as popular as steck. But at least you can make different things out of both of them. I don't think i'll buy any of these sets which saddens me. :'(

Initially, I'd have to say I'm dissapointed with the decision to go with a fantasy theme. There's too much of that available elsewhere. The toy world needs solid, quality historical toys. Real life is always more interesting than fantasy anyways. I'll reserve final judgement until I see them first hand... ho hum.

I agree with you totally, Gloobey. But I am afraid that fantasy sells  :'( and Geobra goes where the money is. I think we can't really complain too much - after all; they did bring out the Romans and the Egyptians. And I am no way sure that these themes were/are a great succes ...

I can be optimistic and think that perhaps this fantasy line is a hedge for the more historically correct lines, just as a bar will 'carry' a restaurant these fantasy lines which may be more financially lucrative can 'carry' lines with more depth but less marketability. :)

Like most of us who collect the Knights theme, I'll be taking bits from this theme and adding them to my existing knights theme.

I haven't got room or need for another set of castles or towers, and have a perfectly expanded good Rock Castle for the naughty knights.

You might be right about this Gepetto. I can see kids loving this stuff. I definitely want Playmobil to stay in business. I tend to shy away from good guy vs. bad guy toys. I'd like to see Playmobil do the same.

:hmm: lamborghini could also decide to start building and selling cars with wings and finns and jet engines and blades and shinning lethal extras.
:yup: they could even "inspire" themselves in designs taken from blockbuster movies like batman series.
:yup: ... and i am sure there would be a lot of "kids" loving them and buying them.
:yup: ... and i am sure an explanation that this design path would save them from bankruptcy could be accepted.
:yup: ... and maybe it woulb be a success.

fwiw a micro sample feedback from PM's target audience - our 2 boys 5 & 9 - responded enthusiastically to the new sets, especially the projectile-spewing weapons and new towers.  In addition, they have seen Mega Block's castle/dragon theme on the shelf for the umpteen time and it doesn't have any draw.

They also like the various novelties on the latest pirate ship (hide-away canons, etc) for the play factor (likewise the upcoming Egyptians) - so in a way PM looks to be successfully catering to their target audience.  The older one though has an eye on the steck-era knights, and is known to lament the simplification and "non-accurate/realistic" aspects of the newer knights (then again, I might have rubbed that off on him  ;))
