I knew this theme would be amazing but I wasn't expecting to fall in love with it instantly. :cloud9:

It's even more fantastic than the Roman theme. Jawdroppingly beautiful, in fact. :omg:

I can't see how Geobra can possibly top this in years to come, but I expect they will find a way.

I simply must have ALL of it! :yup: :yup: :yup:

(Cost/lack of storage is no longer important. ::) ;))

Playmobil has definitely outdone themselves this year with the Egyptian theme.  There are sooo many details to these sets!!   These sets are not only great for collectors but look like great educational tools for kids.    I think I need to get a bigger house with more room......  :o

Thank you and Knusperkeks for the pics, Andi.  The new theme is certainly impressive, although it's not one I'll collect.  It looks as if it might be pricey, although oen can't be certain without knowing the size of the things like the buildings and the pyramids.  Presumably the decoration will be printed on rather than in the form of stickers, although either I would have thought would, again, be expensive to produce.

I wonder, too, how popular the theme will be in Europe and America.  Both areas see themselves as having direct links with the Romans, but ancient Egypt?  Maybe Playmobil is looking at other markets though.  I think they may be looking to areas such as North Africa and the Near East for new markets.

Fantastic series. I love the Anubis parts, and it looks like built in traps for grave robbers in the pyramid. For some reason the snake in the house set is a rattlesnake instead of a cobra. ??
The one thing that doesn't quite sit right with me is the Sphinx looking so human like instead of more klicky like if that makes any sense.

I totally agree, Tim ...

I don't understand why Zirndorf does that.

Occasionally, Playmobil does use Klicky faces. The Jungle theme was a good example:

Utterly wonderful - I'll have to get at least one of every set too, though I would never have thought I'd want to collect Ancient Egyptian Playmobil.

My one annoyance - why does the sarcophagus have an Annubis head? is there any evidence this was ever done? I've seen dozens of mummies and their sarcophagi in the British Museum (there's nothing we Brits won't pinch and show off there) and not one has a face other than human.

I do like the canopic jars - I hope there's a full set of four, I could only see two in the pictures.

This makes me want to study ancient Egypt again, and see who had the eyepaint on - I'd imagine that was reserved for wealthy and noble people, not litter carriers.

I'm also wondering if there might someday be themes on other ancient civilisations... Mayan temples (with human sacrifices mandatory), the wonderful buildings we see in India, Cambodia etc.

Oh, and I like the touch that the 4 soldiers have different patterns of cowhide on their shields, not just one print for everyone. It looks like they only did the four, but that's enough variety.

Nope, there are no sarcophagus with Anubis as the head.  There are plenty of models of them on Ebay though...  Makes you wonder.....

Actually, everyone did. I remember having heard that there had been a strike with the tombbuilders because their mascara had ran out and it hadn't been arranged for new ones. And I am NOT joking.

I've had time to ponder this wonderful series.  Wow!  I really like the ship.
It is simple, but so cool 8-)!  The chariot is a must have for sure.  The neat little
house,(reminds me of my Pueblos of years gone by ;D), has great potential to
expand...the well is awesome.  The accessories for the dromedary, blanket, and
baskets are a great addition.  (Great for my Nativity set up!)  The new figures,
like the bare chested ones can be used to customize a whole group of different folk.
The whole lot is just neat! :wow:

So....How do you get to Germany from here?

I am an American and I can't wait to buy the Romans I want and start collecting the Egyptians.  Does anyone know how the Egyptian boat and the Roman one compares, size wise?

First of all... WOW, move over Romans, this is so kool!!!

Secondly, can anyone tell how the Egyptian ship compares in size to the Roman one?

I can see great battles between Rome and the Egyptians, both on land and sea. The Roman Army was an Infantry army, now, watch out, here comes a mobil Egyptian Chariot army back up by troops. Very Kool...

I am still working on my Roman Legion, then a Gaul army, by that time, the Egyptians will be here in America.

Oh my, I am so going to be broke. Great job, Playmobil, I almost forgive you for not continuing the soldiers to fight the Red Coats and the loss of decent artillery. If Playmobil would re-release the Western ACW artillery sets for ACW and Napoleonic battles, what joy there would be.

Wow!  This looks like another amazing entry from Playmobil.  I'd say these Egyptians are at least the equal of the Romans, which I think are among their best work.  Based on pictures, I think the chariot, the soldiers, the ship, and the graverobber sets are the most successful in the line from my adult point of view, but I can see how the pyramid and the sphinx would be great for children.  The temple looks good too.  I'll probably end up buying them all!  I'm not sure I can wait until the arrive in the U.S.!

I can see a line next to the stairs on the left on the baseplate, so I'm guessing that'll be two pieces so it can fit in one of their current big boxes.

That is indeed huge, going to make a major centrepiece.

Rickshaws (from Japanese "Jin-rik-sha" : person-powered-car) are probably more emblematic of 19th century Shanghai or WWII Tokyo.

Medieval Japanese officials rode in covered palanquins.  Rikshas would only properly belong to an urban environment, used for shuttling locals and tourists (even medieval tourists) around town.

But that's OK.  I'm glad to see the Japanese fetish has shifted to subjects other than ninjas!!!

Brilliant observation, Jimbo!   :yup:
According to the info on playmobil.de the pyramid measures 53 x 53 x 35 cm (or approx 21" x 21" x 13.75") and, according to wikipedia, the ancient Egyptian Royal Cubit was 52.35 to 52.4 cm (though the standard today is one cubit = 18" or almost 46 cm.)

Is this merely a lovely coincidence?   8-)

Thanks for the new pix Richard & Andi!

Let's just hope that Direct Service stocks enough extra walls for all of us !!!
And, that the walls are easily removed and replaced !!!
And. that they're not "permanently snapped" into place like so many of the new sets that we've recently seen from Playmobil !!!

Hi, Richard!  I am sure you are quite right about this:

We should never underestimate Jimbo's wonderful wealth and breadth of knowledge ... ;)

but the "coincidence" that I was marvelling at is that the Playmobil pyramid dimensions hew so closely to the ancient standard.  I was wondering whether the Playmobil designers had the cubit in mind when they designed the pyramid.

Hmmm ... I was marveling at Jimbo's uncanny ability to see that the pyramid WAS about a cubit, rather than Playmobil's forethought to MAKE it a cubit ...

I agree, Lars! This is indeed a very nice figure. In fact, it may become my favorite Playmobil Klicky of all time!

I don't know if we have any Warhammer (http://uk.games-workshop.com/warhammer/) fans here, but this Egyptian would make a great High Elf (http://uk.games-workshop.com/highelves/) archer.

The original Warhammer figures were bright and colourful (much like Playmobil) and really looked wonderful on parade (never thought very much about wargaming with them).

Thanks again and all the best,
Richard

Hi Richard I collected Warhammer back in 1990 and liked them a lot.  I wasn't experienced enough then to critically judge the rules, though it was my first introduction to the concept of mass routs, which no other game I played dealt with.

Funny--I went to a gamesworkshop outlet at the local mall recently and a guy in his early 20s / late teens was trying to woo me with a hard salespitch.  I told him I collected in my teens but have been out of it so long.  How long could that really be?  he asked, in his youthful experience perhaps mistaking me for a peer.  When I told him since the late 80s (probably near the time he was born) he bowed out and gave up on courting me...

But, Games Workshop--do they make a killing off their prices?  The plastic "economy sets" must be like gold in the bank, when you consider those are nearly the equivalent (material wise) of the little green army men you buy at the grocer.

I've been researching Egypt around the 18th kingdom (Akhenaten through Ramsses) and am impressed with PM's rendition of the Egyptian chariot.

The axle rested behind the chariot (as depicted by PM).  This made the chariot faster and more mobile (but required it to be lighter and more fragile)(the chariot was faster because with the center of balance so far back, it was less likely to hit a bump and fly forward over the horses--but conversely the horses had to support more of the chariot's weight so the structure had to be lighter).

Hittite chariots, on the other hand, were center-axled (like the Roman chariot) and less maneuverable.  The Hittites used their chariots as shock engines so this was "OK".  (Egyptian chariots were used like mounted archer platforms, whereas the Hittites, fighting with javelins, used their chariots in melee to a greater degree.

Thought that you might enjoy this Herget painting from October 1941 National Geographic.

I agree, Tim.  All things considered, Playmobil has done an admirable job in keeping the Egyptians and Romans fairly authentic.  Knowing this makes the one year wait for the Egyptians in the U.S. all the more difficult!

I wonder, too, how popular the theme will be in Europe and America.  Both areas see themselves as having direct links with the Romans, but ancient Egypt?  Maybe Playmobil is looking at other markets though.  I think they may be looking to areas such as North Africa and the Near East for new markets.

Historic Playmo reaches all the Western (civilization's) countries markets. Not to tell that there's a lot of Protestants that grow up reading the Exodus, and Moses grew up in Egypt ...

XVIII, XIX centuries fans ("pirates" & soldier garden-wargamers) will be interested at least in pyramids (and Sphinx), because Napoleon has been there (and spoke words that became famous ...) (Words that may have been interesting to be heard at that moment and place, if I were a French soldier (...)*, and that ... I was [interested], when in school ::) [, I mean, the words caught my attention, and made me say "AAWWW!! ..."]).

So, it'll reach.

I forgot to count in the garden-wargamers who wish to make Rome to fall from both sides, or that are searching for new enemies for their Romans ...

And there's also the kids who are growing up with the "Mummys" and "Returns of mummys" movies ... The people who like Stargate ...

I may have forgotten someone/group :P

Quote
If the labour intensive methods employed by the Egyptians were used, then the cost would approach US$18 billion. It would be a brave government indeed that would suggest pyramid building as a cure for unemployment.

The paranormal gets my goat, too.  Though arguably all that clowning around from the 1850s through the 1970s is what has generated the interest in Egyptian history that makes it so well-researched today.

When I was eight or so I remember visiting my Gramps' house with Daniken's "documentary" based on "Chariot of the Frauds" playing in the background.  During my writing "career", I made "friends" with a successful Western writer who planned to venture into fantasy with a conspiracy theory novel based around the Bhagavad Gita encoding secret wisdom buried under the Pyramid at Giza.

Worse, my blank stare at such nonsense (I doubt he believed his premise, but hoped to ride off DaVinci code) helped earn my reputation with him as being a dim-wit.

But, seriously, just as you start to think you've seen everything, you run into educated, prominent people who believe the most bizarre notions.  I ran into another writer, a successful romance novelist, who after making jokes about weirdos she met on booksigning tours turned around and expressed some equally weird idea about aliens, pyramids, and Chinese medicine.

PS. Chinese medicine is another fraud.  All that talk about Chinese medicine being "holistic" and about the "entire person" is equivalent to an American believing Europe to be a land of enlightened, tolerant bliss where everybody is accepted for who they are.  A feature of Chinese hospitals are long lines stretching from the doctor's office, five minute interviews, and a prescription for a mass-produced pill from the pharmacy.*

* Actually, in my case, a foot rash, the medicine actually made the rash go away.

But, we have a huge entertainment industry centered around the hope for the existence of better, more enlightened worlds, whether this be Pyramids built by eccentric space aliens or disheveled Chinese peasants who can cure cancer just by being nice to you.

Among those who cracked open Tut's tomb, the average age of death was higher than their home country national averages.

That mummy's curse business was media driven dribble.
