Post by: Giorginetto on June 22, 2010, 07:13:20
Well at the greek forum meeting i bought another 20 romans , these are to add to my existing roman army

Will buy another 100 or so romans and very soon will make a significant  buy i reckon of egyptians. Will also buy some more green roman tents and build a roman fort with wooden walls from old western forts ( might need a couple more actually), watch this thread as there will be a lot of addition very soon , before setting my mediaval collection will set these first !!!! Shame i couldnt find a pic of my 4 roman ships. I an planning hoping  buy 3 pyramids , 2 sphinxs, 4 gates, 8 houses, 20 horsemen, 6 chariots and 200 egyptian soldiers ( thats the plan anyway) .

That's a great set up already and what you plan will look fantastic.

Are you planning to buy a larger house, too, so you can have everything on display at once - Playmobil through the ages starting with Egyptians, then Romans, then Mediaeval etc?

At the moment i can set one at a time in the storage room i have currently in boxes all my playmobil , which is approx 40m2. Sometime in the very near future i will utilise an underground garage i have , converting it into  a playmo haven  and also have a sofa, playstation etc there, that area is over 100m2 so my long term plan is to have everything on shelves as Wolk Knight and/ or on tables on permanent display, as you said ear era on its own. romans/egyptians, mediaval, pirates and redcoats, western and the very few old modern city i have plus my dungeons and dragons collection .  That wont happen right now its for the future though !!!!

Just wondering, did the thought making public dioramas cross your mind. Did it cross your mind when thinking about your talks with the PM Hellas GM?

For me personally the defining moment was seeing the dioramas at Playmobil planet! That was when I realized I was not alone with this hobby (of course I have the luck to do it together with my wife but that is different, you know what I mean). It would be great if they would give diorama space to people for a couple of months isn't that like a win win situation?

Or maybe a convention, I don't know the possibilities seem endless.

I am sure you can set up a display that will dazzle the visitors :-)

..  dunno if i have the time to do all this !!! Playmobil is a lovely hobby of mine which costs me lots (   ) but so is travelling , sighseeing , cars ( Wolf Knight had a ride in my other crazy passion ) and a million other things, i would love to do this but not sure if i can find the time unfortunatelly. I am planning to take 3-4 days off work in august to set my romans and arrange all my mediaval etc etc  ( i might divert to my original plan to set all the mediaval up) there is never enough steck but also no time ... a great dream though

Wow, great to see all your Romans lined up! I need to get on with digging mine out properly and seeing what I have. Wouldn't it be great of Playmobil did a few klegionaries with a differet base color? Then we could have a Blue legion, green legion etc.

I notice you have your men lined up in 100s, but actually all cohorts after the 1st actually contained 80 legionaries (the 1st containing 160). If you split out the extra men and add them to your third secion you'd have 3 full centuries.

Like you, even now I barely have room to display my Roman army indoors, so I kept my centuires as representative rather than realistic, with 20 men per century plus three officers.

Which Special are you referring to?

I can only find:

4740 Kid with baby Donkey (OK)
4741 Space Robot (Not my style)
4742 Woman on Mountain Bike (meh)
4743 Conquistador (Very nice one)
4744 Mother with baby and Rocking horse (Cute)
4745 Mogolian Warrior (Love this one)

None of these have a green shield or seem appropriate for the current toppic. What am I missing?

Very impressive collection!!!!! Thanks very much for the pics. I do not have that many romans.

About special 4632, is it coming out in september???? It is already out of stock here for a number of years!!! It is my favorite (also my first roman). How can this be???

It is also still available at Playmo DS Canada. Can I order from them here in Holland? Cause I need some more. I´ve been hunting them down here, but I can only find about 1 per month. I have 18 of them now.

That's a wonderful and most impressive Roman army, Giorginetto!  You have grand plans for an Egyptian army as well!

The Legionary Special with the green shield was released years ago prior to the Roman theme, but it's nice to see Playmobil is bringing it back to some countries.  They released this Special and the Centurion Special in a blister pack in the US a year or so ago and I was fortunate to be able to buy quite a few at a bargain price.  As Martin writes, I ended up customizing both Specials into non-Romans.  I would really like some auxiliaries with green tunics and shields!

Does that mean it is in production again in Europe? Does Playmobil do that often, bring back older sets?

I must lie down for a bit. I feel feverish.

If I loose,
I will buy 10 of the Romans and ask for 9 of these guys for Christmas instead!

260+90= 350 leggionaires  equal  4 chohorts ( 4x80=320) and 30 spare ones. i ordered 90 leggionaires at playmobil hellas today to get these numbers .. egyptians to follow and i will set these up very very soon indeed !!!! By the way and that IS VERY IMPORTΑΝΤ  as i i have ordered 150 egyptian foot soldiers from playmobil hellas also  i told them i am not gonna buy them unless they get me enough egyptian leather shields for all of them , tomorrow they will tell me if thats ok or not, i will put a lot of pressure on them as i have spent a fair amount of money in playmobil hellas this year, so watch this space hopefully that will be the first of other such orders for everyone in greece , will kepp you all posted !!!!! ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

I have 30 Legionnaires,
20 Principes (Auxilary Units in a late Republic army (Ceasar's army)),
And I will most likely aquire 10 Triarii by next summer. (More Auxilary Units.)
So 60 inf. in total. 30 heavy, 20 light (or heavy, I could use them as either depending on what we need.)
And 10 heavy spear units.
I have a General's Bodyguard which includes 3 Heavy Cav, plus my General is 4.
And 1 mounted archer.

I have more auxilary units aswell. (If I were including my Eygyptian Auxilaries.)
Plus I have five Light Cav units (barbariens).

How many do you have in total?
I would assume we are not using the Eygyptian Auxilaries...?

Cool! That means 160 or so together.
Guess your Roman army was actually bigger then mine.
I was just going off what you had on the shelf before.

A 2 to one battle... easy as pie! :)
Not to sound like an old Grandpa but...
I once won a battle of 5 to one, so no worries Wolf Knight.
It might not be pretty, but we'll have a fighting chance! ;D

Unless Giorginetto buys lots more Romans. ::)

So many wonderful Roman armies are present here!

WarriorOfToys, your Roman army sounds as if it's coming along nicely with a good mix of troops!  Remember, however, that the Triarii, Principes, and Hastati weren't auxiliary soldiers but, rather, Republican citizen heavy infantry.

Giorginetto, I really hope you get everything you want from Greece's DS!  As with everything you do, you have grand plans and I can't wait to see the results.  Four plus complete centuries is a very large army!  Like Martin, I've only created representative centuries with each consisting of 20 men and 3 officers.  Even then, my "cohort" of 120+ men is difficult to find space for and move around the battlefield, but that's never stopped you!

If we are having a big international Roman civil war, can I too join in with my klickies? ;)  Martin and Richard also have some Romans.
Title: Re: My Romans/ Egyptians Collection
Post by: WarriorOfToys on June 23, 2010, 20:10:26
Justindo,
I do know what Hastaii, Principes, and Triarii are, but I was saying they could be used as Auxilary forces in a Ceasar type army. (Post Marion Reform)
Which did not contain Hastatii, Principes, and Triarii but the Legionnaires that Playmobil has already produced. So they could be a Pre Marion Reform type army, or part of a Post Marion Reform.

That was what I meant when I said they were Auxilary Units in a late Republic army. :)

I think it would be awsome if we could all be a part of it!
I only brought it up because I will likely be visiting Greece
(Athens particularily) next summer, which (it seems) is close to Giorginetto and Wolf Knight.

But I would be extatic if everyone could join!
How large would the armies we could field be then!!! :o ;D :o ;D :o ;D

Thanks for the clarification, WarriorOfToys, and you are, of course, correct.

I find it interesting that while the lorica segmentata can really only accurately be used during the 1st and 2nd Centuries AD, which is fine with me since this is the period I'm trying to replicate, the lorica hamata is much more adaptable, as it can be used from the pre-Marian reform Repubican Army until the fall of the Empire and beyond.  I look forward to seeing your Hastati, Prinicpes, and Triarii.  Will you be creating some Velites too?  Ralf's example on Garden Wargaming is an excellent model, I think.

But I would be extatic if everyone could join!
How large would the armies we could field be then!!! :o ;D :o ;D :o ;D

As large as actual Roman Civil War armies? :(o):

Giorginetto, make sure you also get their helmets and weapons (if desired).  I'm short a number of helmets, which US DS was out of last time I checked.  This is making it impossible for me to field my Egyptian armies!

It would be awsome! So many soldiers!

I have made a War Elephant out of a rubber band and a steck flooring piece...

Awsome Gis,
If you are comming I am sure our side would apperciate the elephants! ;D
(You'd give 'em to us right? ;) I'll be your best friend! ;D )

All you would need to do is grab a rubberband and a steck flooring piece.
Place the floor piece on the elephants back...
Loop the rubberband around the elephants belly...
Secure the floor piece by twisting the rubber band below the belly (forming a loop)...
And loop the loop armound the flooring piece (holding the floor piece down to the elephants back).

TADA! ;D

All in due time.

I spoke with playmobil hellas , they  called me back , today i emailed me the quantities ( 150 of each ) for the egyptian hide shields and golden spears, i reckon they will process the order , so Playmobil Hellas after the pressure and big orders i placed seems now to take orders for parts . I have ordered 90 additional leggionares and 150 egyptian soldeirs , problem being witrh recent orders and purchases still in boxes i have lost count of how many klickies i have so need to check if they work out the numbers i had planned . too many klickies ? never , just like with steck, this week i shall be buying all the egyptian sets also and very very soon set all the romans and egyptians . A big thanks to Wolf Knight for concincing me to pause a bit the mediaval and get the egyptians ( well on the way a few more romans have been bought ... :P :P :P) , cant wait to get them all and show you pictures of it all !!!!

I've found it's far better to have too many klickies than too few! ;D

They are delaying us export market playmofriends from getting the new specials. We are one year later than you European guys. So we are stuffed with some older specials due to popular demand (they claim so). But luckily we can get 4611 :P

Do they still have his blister in US? I love the white centurion, but it is too old a special for me to recruit at a fair price :hmm:

4632- Roman Warrior ( see for example playmobil.co.uk )

I reckon so to get 160 of these to have as a different chororts ( x2 ) ...  ;D
160 of them
It is a good klicky, but I think the design is more like a knight rather than a roman warrior. His arms and boots, and the vest is just printed on instead of using another part. But his shield is nice though, which I cant agree more. ;D

Or another option is to buy normal leggionaires and also order these green shields and voila !!! you got another army with slight different colours. Romans look awesome in great numbers and formations ....

Unfortunately, I don't think the dual Roman blister pack is available any longer in stores, as I haven't seen it in well over six months.  The good news is that it will probably come to Playmobil's website within a year or so.  I'd like to get a few more myself!

What about the blister of 5824 with the red and orange gladiators? I have been looking for one, and initially worked out a trade, but unfortunately the lady sent me the wrong roman themed blister :'(

Wow!  :(o): That's a lot of egyptians. In some ways, the pyramid is very historically accurate (like the gold at the top -- I recently found out the pyramids originally had that), but I'm still not wild about it. Looks too toy-ish, but of course it is meant to be a toy for children! But what I usually love about playmobil is how realistic it is. To me, it just misses. But I will probably end up getting it anyway, I can't help myself!

That is a very good haul, Giorginetto!! Congratulations!

But hadn't you better save up for a bigger car? Then you can shift more playmobil in one trip.

I would call it historically accurate, I'm afraid. Most egyptian pyramids are mostly solid. There are historically other issues. The king Tut headdress on one of the characters is an anachronism, for instance. Priests were often totally bald. Etc.

But Playmobil is a toy so I do not mind. So it should be playable first. Love the Egyptian series.
