Title: Sorry I'm late ...
Post by: Richard on November 30, 2005, 03:24:33
Hello, Playmofriends ...

What a great name, Playmofriends!

The name suggests a group of "friends" all sharing their marvelous hobby with each other.

I am so happy to be here! ... :)

I have been collecting and customizing Playmobil for a very, very long time. Regardless, I am quite certain that I do not even come close to knowing everything that there is to know about our hobby. So, I am here to learn new tips and tricks and to share in the excitement of everyone's surprises and discoveries.

Many of you may know me from Garden Wargaming. However, what you may not know is that I am fervent and impassioned pacifist. I'm also a vegetarian ... :)

Thank you, Sylvia, and your dedicated Playmofriends, for creating this new forum.

My personal goal is to be a positive addition and contributor to the Playmofriends forum!

All the best and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone,
Richard

  Hi Richard, and Welcome!!

Aside from Playmo, I'm going to have to pick your brains on vegetarian recipes!  My niece is vegetarian, and I'm constantly on the lookout for tasty recipes for her, especially since we're all together so much during the holidays.  Besides, I like to have vegetarian meals for my family at least twice a week.  ;D

I'm looking forward to hearing more from you  :)

Hi Richard,

We've not yet formally met but thanks for the cash!    (Now that will get the tongues wagging? ;)  Though it's really not a tongue wagging sort of site...unless it's tongue in cheek.)

I've heard lots about you from Sylvia, Guarrenzino, and others...not all bad. :D

I love Garden Wargaming even though I just lurk and I adore PlaymoFriends (and your avatar!)

An incredible welcome ... Thank you everyone.

In time, I hope to thank each of you individually for making me feel so welcome here.

For now, I would like to just respond to David's request to fully "expose" myself ...

Hello, Meg ...

I love both VI's ... The Virgin Islands and Vancouver Island. In many ways they are somewhat similar. Friendly happy people, beautiiful scenery, magnificent water and clean air. The biggest difference is one VI has pine trees and the other VI has palm trees ... ;)

St. Thomas is a little bit more convenient than St.John. However, we have lived on both islands and love them equally. Vancouver Island is very large and has all the amenities of mainland living.

I could go on here forever, but after all this is a Playmobil fansite ... :)

Thanks for showing me your avatar.

You are very welcome. I'm pleased that's all the '"exposing" that has been requested ... ;)

All the best,
Richard

Vancouver Island is lovely! We were on Orcas Island (in the San Juans) for a short vacation in October and it was beautiful in the Fall.  I've been to the British Virgin Islands and to Antiqua but never to the U.S. VI.  It sounds like you travel a good deal...you'll have to share your adventures. :)

...you'll have to share your adventures. :)

Hello, Diana ...

I would love to share my "adventures" ... But, is that permitted here in the "welcome" forum?

Later, when I finally get a bit settled everywhere, I'll be able to include little Klickys in my adventures. But, for now, most are still in their shipping cartons, waiting patiently, at our home (which we are renovating) on Vancouver Island.

We are also totally renovating our home in the Virgin Islands (which should take a year or so to finish). Hopefully, our home on Vancouver Island will be finished sometime in May when we return to Canada. In the meantime, we're travelling back and forth between our condos in Fort Lauderdale and St. Thomas. Great fun ... :)

Please let me know what the "rules" are here at Playmofriends, as I want to be a "law abiding" member ... ;)

All the best,
Richard

That type of info would be great in the NPZ forum. There is a board for "Families and Hobbies" where travel adventures would fit just great. :)
They can even be Klicky free until your little guys get settled.

That was an interesting thread on your new avatar, Richard.  Thank you for giving us the background to it.

At first, I thought the one based on the Confederate soldier was very elegant and a possible winner, but the one you have is certainly the best - quite astounding.

It's nice to hear, too, that Cap'n Henry is still flourishing.

I'm pleased that you visited the GW-PC forum, Gordon, and that you enjoyed seeing all of Cap'n Henry's great custom avatars. I also liked the Confederate soldier. It was a difficult choice, but somehow "Richard the Lionheart" just seemed to fit ... ;)

No question about it David ... Our friend Capitan Enrique is quite a talented customizer. I wonder what would happen if we ever turned him loose with some Milliput? ...

Actually, the plane fare from SEA to FLL is fairly inexpensive ... And, beginning the 15th December, Spirit Airlines has an incredibly low fare from FLL to STT. So, please tell me about your construction experience ... ;)

BTW ... A separate Playmo-Room for the St,Thomas house (Villarisa) is included in the plans ...

All the best,

Green chiles? I remember peeling those darn things. Just about took the skin off my fingers.

Living in Texas for so long has made me a jalapeño kinda guy.

But, mojitos? Now that's something we might want to talk about. (Yes, I'm working my way through all the threads ... ;) )

BTW, Serenity ...  What would your new hubby have to say about your putting yourself up for adoption? ...

Perhaps a better idea might be ... Maybe we could all get together in a year or so down in the Virgin Islands for a big Playmofriends get together ... Whatcha think?

All the best,
Richard

Well there were numerous rafts I built with my cousin David and some actually floated! And I helped my Grampa build his house on his ranch but I mostly was allowed to pull out bent nails and call 911 when he drove the back hoe into the unfinished basement! (Hey, that was an important job.) I've built (and mended) countless fences and renovated an old barn for a horse. Then there's system X.... ;)

That works! :D   In fact, in 2008 we're hoping to be out that way to renew our vows ... so, we have to scout locations, yes? D  You are all, of course, invited (I can't think of a better counterpoint to our families ;) )

September could be very exciting! Especially for anyyone who has never been through a Category five Hurricane ... ;)

Early summer or late spring isn't too bad as the temperature doesn't vary much in the Virgin Islands. Also the air fares and hotel rates will be a bit lower than during the winter season. (However, having been in the travel industry, you already know all this.)

Regardless, my advice would be ... the closer you can get your date to the winter season the better. The air is drier (less humidity) and the nights are a litlle cooler.

A Playmofriends Windjammer cruise could be a lot of fun for everyone! We might be able to get a great group rate if we start working on them soon. I wonder how many "friends" might actually be interested in a Playmo-pirate cruise in the Caribbean?

Unfortunately, we have several college students and teachers in my family, so unless it's Christmas break (undoable on several levels), winter is out ... at least for vow renewals.

I wouldn't mind just doing a PF Windjammer Cruise, and they have great group rates, and low group numbers.  6 people (not cabins) constitutes a group, and if you sail in January, you get 2 free passengers (for every 6 paying) ... that drops the price of the cruise per person a nice bit.

OK! I´m with you! I`ll cobble together a raft and take our local river the Dill down to the Lahn and after a pretty cruise I`ll be in the Rhine; from there the current´ll take me to the North Sea. Then it´s plain sailing, through the Straits of Dover , down the English Channel and a hop across the Atlantic. If I start in the spring I should just make it. ;D ;D

Only two things (that I can think of) that we might want to ask:
1. How many "friends" seriously want to go on a Windjammer cruise?
and
2. Can we schedule it so that Guarrenzino's arrival coincides with our departure? ... ;)

Psyche, will you visit more of the continent than just Gambia

Serenity,
Having traveled with a person who use to run tours in Kenya, and then Tanzania, he would recommend going to Zambia or elsewhere because Kenya and Tanzania are so heavily touristed. ;)

Travel talk! Wow we have gone off topic on Richards welcome have we not? ;)

Meg: Yes, the plan so far is to fly to Europe (Amsterdam) spend a day or two, then to The Gambia for a week or so. The Gambia is in Northwest Africa so we won't be heading South to Tanzania (though Chelsea loved it there) but rather down the West Coast through Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, etc.  These countries are not touristy at all and are primarily Muslim countries.  On the way back we are considering a few extra days in Central Europe (i.e. Zirndorf???)

One very interesting thing we've discovered it that the predominantly Muslin African nations have much lower HIV/AIDS rates than the predominantly Christian nations. But in West Africa the poverty and malnutrition is extreme. Here's a cool map  (http://www.library.northwestern.edu/africana/map/) I found where you can click on an African nation and it will link to the CIA fact book for that country.  8-)

Serenity Windjammers are much fun and go lots of places in the Carribean. Having been on one though I wouldn't recommend we try to share a 6 person "cabin" as it's about the size of 1 small bedroom and barely works well for 6 teenagers! The 2 person cabins are much better suited to couples but are still mostly a place to keep you stuff, shower, sleep if you wish. (I mostly slept on deck when I went on The Flying Cloud!)

Richard Apologies for thread-jacking!  If I were you I'd report the lot of us to a moderator! ;)

As you may have gathered my daughter has been invited by the Peace Corp to go to The Gambia to work on infant mortality/maternal health and HIV/AIDS issues for two years.  She is scheduled to leave the end of January and we plan to visit a year from now (next December/January).   :D

Certainly NOT!  I wouldn't put 6 in a cabin no matter HOW friendly everyone was!!!   I know the Windjammer cabins are especially small.  It's going to be tough going with DH and the little guy as it is.  We were talking 6 as Windjammer's official number of people in a group.  But the picture is going to crack me up for days

I would like to do Botswana as well.  Actually my brother and his wife have gone several times (DINKS, you know), and we'd probably tour with them through Kenya and Tanzania.  They have a foster child in Kenya.  Considering my brother hates crowds, I'm sure they have figured out all the best non-touristy places  :yup:

Since we are sitting around the kitchen table swapping stories, here's my horrible one.  :( The beautiful Windjammer ship my husband and I went on (http://www.fortogden.com/fantommiamiherald.html) during part of our honeymoon trip to the Carribean sunk in Hurricane Mitch, crew aboard, four years after we were married. Very very sad. I am still a bit haunted by what happened.

How  very sad Red! :(

In the "it's a small ocean" department, my father was on that ship for his 2nd honeymoon back in the 70's.  He and Stepmom #1 loved it so much that he gave me my "barefoot crusie" for graduation a few years later.

Thanks Richard for letting us swap tales at your kitchen table. :)

Oh oops... sorry!  :-[ Perhaps I deserve a wet noodle for that. I certainly didn't mean to scare anyone. All passengers were put off this ship when bad weather was threatened, and you would be  too if in the same situation. But seriously, I wouldn't book any trip down there in hurricane season now that the Atlantic has entered a new active phase, likely to last the next decade at least, depending on the effects of global warming, if only just to avoid having your trip shortened or cancelled. Being a resident down there, you would probably recommend this as well Richard?

The trip sounds like a blast and I'd love to come too! (Not sure I could get my hubby on a boat full of playmo-addicts though!  ;))

... I wouldn't book any trip down there in hurricane season  ...

Hmmm ... Hurricane season seems to be getting longer and longer every year. I remember when we only had to seriously worry about the latter part of August, all of September and the first part of October. Now it seems like we need to be on alert from June to December ... :(

Perhaps we should sink the cruise idea and talk about hiking in the Green Mountains. About the only dangerous thing that I can remember about Vermont in summer is Poison Ivy!

All the best, Kim,
Richard

BTW ... How does one award someone a "wet noodle?" ...

We were lucky when we met Gary and Suzy (ms omega) because they are interesting and cool people, but the DH is none too sure about Playmobil gatherings.

We could always room together, if  that would be acceptable to you.
I dont snore.

Hmmm ... Since everyone needs as much "good" Karma as they can get, I would be very reluctant to ever "wet noodle" anyone. It's unfortunate that "wet noodles" are not separate, as I would probably enjoy adding to one's "wet noodle" score ...

When I told Paul of this idea (not the Playmo part, the cruise) he was "Yes"!  Then I told him the Playmo part and he was all "I don't know about that..." so, me thinks we have enough "sticks-in-the-mud" to keep each other occupied during playmo activities (which won't be all day after all.)

Plan B: We leave 'em home with the kids and cats!  :P

Plan C:  Meeting in British Columbia!

really, i thought poison ivy grew everywhere.

learn something new everyday.

As to our stick in muds - we could inform the spouses that there will be others there that do not share an interest in Playmobil.  They will be able to organize their own activites.

I'm for BC, too ;D  I'm trying to talk my family into having our 2007 family reunion in Portland OR (my nephew lives there).  If we do, DH and I have already agreed to do a 2 week vacation, so we can drive up the coast to Vancouver.  Last time we did Portland, we drove down the coast to San Francisco.

We've already laid out the 2006 family reunion in Las Vegas, since it will be my niece's 21st birthday. ;D

As for our 'sticks-in-the-mud', Meg and Psyche both have it.  They don't have to do the playmo activities (DH would be perfectly happy to stake out a deck chair and read), AND we wouldn't be doing playmo all day, every day.  Me, personally, I don't do structure well  8}

"BC" I understand. But, "structure?" ...

Is "structure" an English word?

I don't believe that I know what this word means.

Is it a verb? A noun? An adjective? Or some kind of yuppie jargon?

If anyone else has ever heard of this word, i wish that you would explain it.

Thanks and all the best,

Hello, Serenity

Anytime in the summer is absolutely gorgeous on Vancouver Island!
(BTW ... Even though our island is an island, it's not a little island. Vancouver Island is almost 300 miles long!)

I wonder how many Playmofriends, who really want to get together, will actually do it ... ???

And, if this is something that we might possibly want to do in 2007, when do you think that we should start making some "serious" noises about it?

All the best,
Richard

The launch date (when we invited others to join) was November 10 (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?action=calendar;year=2005;month=11), but I first set up the forum on October 23rd - at least, that's the register date on my profile. Which one would you say is the birthday? :eh?:

Personally, I believe its the unveiling date.
So, to me,  Dec 10 would be our first month birthday.

Sylvia,
think of what you (?we) put together in 18 days.
Thank you for giving of yourself.
At least the youngest ones can get a drink, and make a sandwich on their own  ;)

Richard and Meg...behave...er...or stop bahaving.   Richard, I've known Meg a long time and she has the uncanny ability for straight talks...so sometimes her humor is a bit easy to miss.

Meg, I don't know Richard much at all yet but can see he's trying to behave.  (And I know you were just joshing with him but not everyone get's your sweet teasing baby. ;) )

So, my sage??? advice is Richard, tell us about Gordon S. and even though Meg sounds serious...don't take her TOO seriously (especially when she has the whip! ;) )

I met Gordon over a 2 day visit to Minneapolis, with Suzy.
I found him charming, and very into his toys.

He had done some excellent customs.
I really enjoyed seeing his drawings, and hearing his story.
He has (at least) one letter signed by Hans Beck, himself, thanking him for his designs.
As evidences, Geobra used them.

I found him shy, and charming.
I just didnt know that others knew of Gordon.

And I am very happy for Gordon, that Richard has given Gordon his own page.

Hmmm ... Sorry, Diana, but it seems like you got caught between two conversations that Meg and I were having, albeit on two different threads. My bad! I should have copied the other conversation over to here (or at least linked to it).

Since Meg and I seem to be finiished "yanking each other's chains" on the previous conversation here, please let me now copy my post from Tim_w's thread over at the Customs & Conversions Gallery.

Tim,
I met a man in Minneapolis.  His name is Gordon Smuder.

Hello, Tim ...

Yes, Gordon Smuder has been feeding Playmobil ideas for many years ...

Some of his drawings and ideas are hosted in the GW Gallery which you can access by clicking on the image below.

(http://www.gardenwargaming.com/gallery/smuder/images/s05.JPG) (http://www.gardenwargaming.com/gallery/smuder/smuder.html)

I agree with everyone who suggested that you share your beautiful off-road dumper with Playmobil.

Our own Playmofriend, Customizer (Andi) can tell you the person to contact in Zirndorf. Just send him a PM or an email.

Thanks for sharing your splendid creation.

All the best,
Richard

---

I hope that this all makes sense now. Again, sorry for the confusion.

And, after all that ... There doesn't seem to be much left to say about Suzy and Gordon as y'all seem to already know more than I do ... :)

All the best,
Richard

Hello, Serenity ...

 ... "I don't care, I'm still free ... You can't take the sky from me ... "

Don't believe it!

After more than thirty years of living on the Gulf Coast, we had to leave. They did indeed take the sky away from us. And, with it all the clean air!

Now when I'm in Florida (on the Atlantic East Coast) and the wind blows out of the west (from the Gulf Coast), they are threatening to take the sky away from me again! ...  :(

So be prepared to fight for your sky, because they can take it away from you!

All the best,
Richard

Well, in the mundane, real life sense, I have to agree with you.  However, those lines are from the Firefly/Serenity theme, so they refer to flying (or space travel in that case).  We're supposed to be good and not discuss politics, so I won't go into me feelings about the Gulf here  ;D but I'm a bit disturbed that they're opening up restaurants and getting tourist things going again ... I'd be staying away from that water for awhile

I've been meaning to tell you, ever since I told my husband about your post, he's been calling me "Mal"  ;D

Hello, "Mal" ...

You might want to gather around your computer with your husband and watch (and listen to) Sylvia's beautiful Christmas story (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=319.0) at GW!

All the best during this wonderful holiday season,

Well, they're not animated (that would just be scary  :o :P), but I get "fancy Christmas toes" every year.  This year it's candy cane stripes.  I started doing it for my nieces right after my brother got his divorce just to make them laugh ... it's become a tradition.  DH says as long as the little guy doesn't wanting to paint his toes, he doesn't mind   :P  (keep in mind that I NEVER paint my fingernails or my toenails except at Christmas).

I am envious of your Holiday destination, Richard.

We have spent two different New Years in St John.

Cyber cafes are available, there.  So I would think cyber cafes are also on St Thomas.

Have a great holiday down on the Islands.

Yeah, but who the heck wants to hang out at a cyber cafe when you're in the islands?  I can think of several places I'd MUCH rather be!! ;)  :P

UNLESS, of course, you're going to post a picture of you in all your island glory, to make us all jealous, then, by all means  :P
Title: Re: Sorry I'm late ...
Post by: Meg on December 13, 2005, 23:51:36
You still have to grab a bite a eat.
One of the cyber cafes on St John is located in an Irish pub (?The only irish pub) on St John.
(The other one in Grand Cruz is located a short walk away, in a place that sends and receives packages.  the third is in Coral Bay, in the same building that collects the mails outlet there, it shares the same parking lot as Skinny Legs - a local bar that serves great burgers )

And you cant spend all your time on the beach, unless you have spf 1000 lotion.

St Thomas is a shoppers paradise, actually.
Charlotte Amalie is a duty free port, and depending on what you are looking for, you can get some decent bargains on luxury items.

Mal,
If I thought you were being serious, I would have wet noodled you. :whip:

Grand Cruz is the big town on St John.  It is located on Cruz bay, about 7 miles to the east of St Thomas.
Coral Bay is localed in Coral Bay on the eastern part of St John.  Some people moved there to be more isolated from Grand Cruz.
However, as with all things, more and more luxury residences are being built in Coral Bay.
So some local are moving east to get from it all.

Grand Cruz is about a 20 min drive over the windy roads from Coral Bay.
The East end is probably another 15 or 20 min drive away, and the roads are not as good the further east you go.

M

I've been to St. Thomas, but I've always wanted to go to St. John.  If they have places named after a Cruz, it sounds like a 'must do' to me ;)  ;D
Title: Re: Sorry I'm late ...
Post by: Meg on December 14, 2005, 01:25:51
Its quieter, more low key than St Thomas.

you need a car, unless you plan to stay in Grand Cruz, and use the bus system.
A 4 wheel drive is nice because of the steep inclines.  Some of the newest developements, and isolated beaches do not have asphalt paving.

I havent been to St Thomas, except for one night, and to travel to and from St John.

HOORAY ... Y'ALL ARE BACK !!!

I WAS GETTING LONELY HERE ...  ;)

Yes, I'm one of the lucky ones ... I get a tan.

When in March are you going to Florida? And, where in Florida, Mal?

Unfortunately, I won't be in Florida when Meg's there. otherwise we could have met at one of the Florida FunParks. But, I may be there when y'all are in Florida, Mal ...

All the best,

I'm not sure exactly when just yet, I'm still working out the details, but we'll be in Orlando for sure ... we have to go see The Mouse, and it shouldn't have to be mentioned, the Fun Park  ;D  Then up to Ft. Pierce for a bit.  My favorite aunt lives there, and it's where my father was stationed during WWII.

You'll still be in the state?

Actually, during the months of January, February and March I'll be flying back and forth between Fort Lauderdale and St.Thomas. So, maybe well be in Florida at the same time ...

BTW I just had to post these PMs here for everyone to enjoy ... :)

Have you had that mojito for me yet?

The trains are NOT yet set up. But, if DH wants to come up to the other VI in April, he can certainly give me a hand ... ;)

But, that doesn't mean that y'all can't also come visit us in St.Thomas. Just bring sleeping bags, as everything is still under construction ... :)

OK ... First: We won't tell the DH anything about trains until he joins PF.

Second: The little guy obviously thinks out of the box. (I wonder who he takes after?) ... :)

Third: Camping is fine.

And, Fourth: The "view" is from our future dining room.

Oh, yeah ... Fifth: Ditto on those darn cruise ships!

OK, First:  DEAL!  ;D

Second: That actually comes from both sides ... DH is the quintessential 'absent minded professor'

Third:  So, what's the bug situation there?  :o ;)

Fourth: That will be a lovely view both night and day!

And Five: Yeah, pretty much cruise ships are only good from ONE side of that picture ... do the windjammers use that port, at least?

Oh, and too bad you're 2 hours (?) later out there ... I may have train setting up questions on Christmas Eve.  I, I mean SANTA got DH and the little guy a G Scale starter set ... I'll be up late putting THAT together.  ::)  :P

Well, the occassional windjammer makes up for the cruise ships then  ;D

I don't know where Meg got off to, probably night-time things ;)

As for bugs ... I was thinking 'tropics', which made me think Costa Rica.  I loved Costa Rica, but they had the biggest bugs I've ever seen  I almost put my hand down on a spider that was larger than my hand  :o  Regardless, it's still one of my favorite places  ;D

Yes, I'm afraid that bugs and tropics go hand in hand. However, growing up in South Florida sorta made me used to them.

We have lots of lizards. Beautiful birds (in fact we have lovely parrots up at our house that's under construction). And, various other little critters. But, no snakes! And, actually nothing that will hurt you!

It's about as close to paradise as most of us will ever get ... ;)

It's a great place to spend the Holidays or a lifetime ...

Its obvious to me that you are up on the ?hill that is the northern side of Charlotte Amelie

How far is the port from your home?
And where are you staying now, if your new home is being built?

The Charlotte Amelie Ferry stops early in the evening, around 8:00 pm if I recall correctly

The Red Hook Ferry runs til midnight, but then no cars.

So where is the Town house located?  There are no views of the port.
The Town house is a very nice place, though with little room for Playmobil ;)

Where in St John did you have a home?

When is the construction supposed to be completed in St Thomas?
You will give us a photo tour, right?

Hello, Meg (the Curious) ... :)

The town house is at the top of Hawk Hill in Frenchman's Bay. It is North of the Frenchman's Reef Marriott and Morningstar Beach (http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/STTFR). Flag Hill is between us and Charlotte Amalie, so we have no view of the harbor.

Where in St John did you have a home?

On St.John we lived above Hart Bay and Chocolate Hole just East of the Westin Resort (http://www.westinresortstjohn.com/).

This is a photo of the adjacent property on St.John that we still own.

When is the construction supposed to be completed in St Thomas?

In about 18 months.

You will give us a photo tour, right?

Absolutely!

Did you like living that close to the resort, and to Grand Cruz?

I love the view from your adjacent property

We really enjoyed being in Coral bay the two times we were there.
I liked the location of the first villa, it was a little bit down the eastern side of the bay, part way up the mountain, and you could hear the ocean.

The second time we were at the northern end, pretty far up on the mountain.
The villa was nice, but it was too far away from the ocean.
I like to hear the waves.

Thanks, Meg ...

We like the view too. But, it's pretty difficult to find a place here that doesn't have a great view ... :)

Even though our home on St.John wasn't that far from Cruz Bay or the Westin Resort, because of the hills and the dense foliage, they always seemed to be very far away. There were no lights in the sky at night, nor was there any noise. In fact, we could almost always hear the sounds of the ocean waves crashing onto the beaches below.

We also hear the ocean from our town house. However, we will probably not hear the sounds of the sea very often from our new home above Charlotte Amalie.

In another thread you asked about snorkeling on St.John. All of the beaches in the National Park (http://www.nps.gov/viis/VIIS/index.html) offer excellent snorkeling!

All the best,
Richard

You went snorkeling in a salt pond ... ???

On St.John, my personal favorite for swimming is Maho Bay. And, for snorkeling, my favorite is Hawksnest. (BTW Maho Bay is being threatened by development. We could use some help! Please click HERE (http://www.friendsvinp.org/maho_action.htm)!)

On St.Thomas, My favorite place to swim is Morningstar. I haven't yet found my favorite place to snorkel on St.Thomas.

You and Meg will have to start up a 'Great Places to Snorkel' thread in PFZ.  I went snorkeling in Maui for the first time 2 years ago.  Of course, I haven't been to a beach since, but I'd really like to snorkel again.  I even got a camera that I can put an underwater housing on.  8}

Well, Richard is right
Most of the beaches on St John have some pretty good snorkling

I have learned that you want to go to the cresents/edges of the beaches where the rocks are.  not in the center of the beach where is tis the most beautiful sand.

Salt pond is a most unpleasant beach.
its very stony, with bugs.
Its at the south end of island, on the eastern edge of Coral Bay inlet
But once in the water, it was great.
You have to hike in about 1/4 of a mile to get there.

Saw an eel, 2 rays, a barracuda amoung other things

Maho and Cinnamon Bay are both great swimming beaches.  I think Cinnamon offers more for the snorkler, because of the the small cay (island) just off shore.
Maho is where is is eco camping.
Cinniamon has a camp cround attached.

The Eco builder/developer who created the Maho bay Camp grounds loses his lease in about 2012.  He has been working on his own eco development, with housing along the eastern edge of of the Coral Bay Inlet.  Not as far south as Salt Pond

Meg

Richard,
I just read the link you provided about Maho Bay.
I have also just sent an Email to Fran Mainella.

The Simons propsal would ruin Maho Bay as it is.
I hope it never gets permission to do the damamge it requests.

No Richard, I didn't see it. Only have been on a few minutes since that was posted. Of course I shall send a letter. And will you send a letter to help us keep Walmart from destroying my little college town? I'll find the link (if there is one.)  While it's heartbreaking to see such beauty lost, it's also difficult to see historical downtowns and small communities wrecked by greedy big-box conglomorates that treat their employes like dirt...all so the rich can get richer.

Paul's home sick as a dog and the real dog (puppy) is wearing me out. I'll post a letter to save the bay later. And see what else I may have overlooked.

No comments on Antigua or BVI? I'm beginning to think my posts on this thread are almost invisible.  :P Ah well, I've never been to St. Thomas but I've married two men from Texas. That I do know I bit about. ;)

Serenity: There is a local group (and yes, it's a lost cause) but one has to (as Richard elegantly says) make a noise.  We are two very small towns 8 miles apart (Pullman, WA & Moscow, ID). They (Walmart) invaded the neighbor town about 7 years ago and about killed it. However, Moscow manages to limp along as they have a year-round populace.  Pullman, on the other hand (and in a different "color" state) has 2/3 of it's population (mysteriously) "disappear" during the summer (I'm thinking of pitching our situation to the networks...afterall, if "Lost" can make it...  8-)  "Summer in Pullman: Where Have All the Students Gone?!!!  :o).  Anyway, I'll see if I can find the info. Maybe letters from all over would at least lift morale. (And yes, I vote with my $. I never voluntarily enter a Walmart. Having been a teen in Arkansas...I steer clear of the Walton Family.)   :0

Richard: You've nothing at all to apologize for except the 2000 presidential election.  :P

As a Floridian...

Seriously...I do wish the link color was a bit more of a contrast from the text box background. I often miss links (or am the missing link?) as they don't jump out at me. Then again, I probably shouldn't need something to JUMP OUT AT ME in order to notice it. Time for coffee perhaps?  :-[

Have you had a chance to read this yet, RichardF.A.Q: Posting (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=76.0) ;D
Spell Check is included there. The SMF Help (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/Themes/default/help/index.english.html) section (accessed by the button in the top menu) is also full of useful tips. :)

I added the "show unread posts" and "new replies" links to the forum template because it doesn't usually come with this SMF theme. Maybe I should add a note about those to this page (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=106.0) because I think other new members have overlooked them too? They certainly do make life a lot easier. :yup:

Seriously...I do wish the link color was a bit more of a contrast from the text box background. I often miss links (or am the missing link?) as they don't jump out at me.

This is a slight problem that I have noticed too, which is why I recommend highlighting words (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=76#msg572) by bolding, bracketing or using other BBC tags when they are used to replace a URL.

All the links throughout PF are done in exactly the same style because they work from an in-built style sheet (css). I can alter the style sheet so that links automatically become underlined without users needing to add the code, but that would mean every single link (such as board headings, topic titles, member names) would then become underlined which might end up looking a bit messy. Not sure if we really want that, but I'm open to considering it.

I suppose we have to weigh up the aesthetic value against the ease of use....  :eh?:

... and do they even HAVE a WalMart on St. Thomas? ...

FIRST: Let me address Mal's question ... NO, we do not have a WalMart anywhere in The Virgin Islands! However, we do have a Super K-Mart! (And, we would only trade it for a Target!)

SECOND: I think that we may have pushed the limits of the Welcome forum well past the stretch point. We may be very close to the break point. Which means that maybe we all need to ask ourselves, "How successful will Playmofriends be without rules?" Especially as it continues to grow.

I've known Sylvia from other boards, and this is not the fun-loving good time lady that I remember. We're all having a good time while Sylvia seems to be carrying much of the burden of trying to maintain order and some semblance of balance. If Sylvia just threw her hands in the air and said, "Here it is, let's all have fun!" Would we have absolute chaos. And, would we destroy what y'all have worked so hard to build?

I don't know the answer, which is why I'm asking the question.

All the best and Happy Holidays,
Richard

In my opinion on rules,
It is good to have them, and to try and enforce them even-handedly.

As to the wandering of this WELCOME topic.....
It is my opinion that this it is not against the rules, because a topic does wander.
If you, Richard, were to complain about the fact that this topic has wandered, and no one was welcoming you anymore, then splitting the topic would be in order.
It is my opinion that finding out more about you (or any member) is appropriate for the WELCOME topic
Since you have yet to complain, I dont think there is a need to split the topic, unless is becomes unwieldy and then it could be split, or a 2nd topic started to save hassle for the server (The reason why we started a 2nd Freudian word thread)

I dont think any of us want to be overly officious.
We want fun and friendship.
We want members to feel welcome and enjoy their time spent at this site.

As moderators, we want members to feel comfortable with us.
If they do have a problem or a question, we want them to come and talk to us.

Richard, the gentle meandering of this topic hadn't escaped the notice of any of the mods, so please don't think that they have been lax in their duties by allowing it to continue. ;D

We have discussed it and we all agreed that the topic was doing exactly what it should be doing - helping you to get to know everyone here and have some fun -  even though it wasn't strictly adhering to the usual conforms of a "welcome" topic. ;)

Maybe I have been overly indulgent, but I didn't see that we were causing any harm or too much forum chaos by allowing it to continue. If you'd like to make a final post I (or one of the others) can lock this topic if you really want us to. Otherwise, you could make another topic in PFZ and direct people there if you'd like to continue the discussions that have recently begun here. I'll leave it up to you! :-*

Well said Meg and Sylvia. And yes Richard, Sylvia does put in loads of time as  Founder and Administrator.  Meg, Serenity's  and my work on guildelines, ideas, format,  testing, and everything from "what to call & how to time the kudo/wet noodle function", etc. came mostly before we opened the doors, yet continues to a lessor degree "behind the scenes."  We've not been called on to do much serious moderating as yet as our numbers are small and our membership amazingly well mannered, cooperative, and fun!  ;D  But we are watching... 8-)

Sylvia: the tip on using bold or italics for links is a good one and will help. I'll be sure to pass it on and perhaps we can make that more prominent a "tip" in the posting guidelines....now how to get folks to read them.  ???

Oh, and Meg is correct in our "off topic" policy. We are trying not to be rigid but reasonably flexible. So, for instance, if a "how to" or "parts request" topic goes significantly astray, we will split or redirect it as need be for it to serve it's purpose. However, this is a discussion forum and "discussion" do then to wander at times...so we'd like to leave that natural aspect of discorse intact wherever possible. None of us feel very comforatable wearing the "police" hat but will do our best to keep things orderly here.

And Richard: Rest assured that if (Zeus forbid) Sylvia "throws up her hands" and runs off to Tahiti, the forum will not turn into total chaos. (At least not right off. ;) ) As much as Sylvia is valued and needed, we've got her back   and we did build in "back up" support from day one. :)

Ok, I'll step aside now and let Richard decide what he would like to do.  I do think a PMZ thread for a meandering topic such as this would be fun...and more readily accessible to the membership. :)

Very tempting, if only to get some sunshine and relaxation, but highly unlikely at this point in time. I'd have to rob a bank first. :P

Your new avatar looks very magical! :D

Ah...then you must have this lot (http://cgi.ebay.com/Playmobil-LOT-Bank-Heist-Collection-4-SETSRelief-Effort_W0QQitemZ6024006889QQcategoryZ2575QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)!  >:D  Ok, I know, a touch of advertising, but it's for a good cause. I can hold back the cop if you wish while you make your getaway! ;)
