Title: High Performance Athletes (Olympics) 5188 - 5202
Post by: bonniebeth on May 23, 2012, 01:38:47
I thought I would go ahead and review all the olympics sets together in one thread. The only ones I do not have yet are the tennis players, table tennis players, or the cyclist. But I will get those three on my next order and add the reviews then. So for now, here goes the first one:

5188 Beach Volleyball

Box front

box back

contents of the box (also came with a small catalog, but no instructions)

The ball is not a true volleyball, but rather a white basketball

front view of the two klickys

and a back view

5189 Gymnast With Rings

box front

box back

contents of the box. This is the only set I got that has instructions

rear view of the klicky

And our little guy on the rings.

Really love this set, particularly his white pants, very smart using the speedo design for this. I would guess they don't make as much profit on this set as some, since it is the same price as the others but with a lot more included.

5190 Gymnast on Balance Beam

front of the box

box back

contents of the box

A view of the completed balance beam

And the gymnast doing a flip on the beam.

I like how the beam has three different hand-holds for the klicky to do hand-stands. It might have been nice to have a foothold or two, like on the skateboards and surfboards, but then I suppose it might have looked strange. Overall a nice little set.

Contents of the box

front view of the klicky's outfit

Not a lot to see in the back

A view of the klicky standing by the bars, showing that the low bar is way too low. She should need to jump up slightly to reach the low bar.

And the klicky in the middle of her performance.

Back of the box

Fully assembled pommel horse, and a back view of the gymnast

And the klicky showing off his strength with my favorite move on the pommel horse!

5195 Fencers

We've already seen a review of this set, but I thought I'd include it here anyway, so the topic will be complete.

5198 Swimmer

Box front

box back

contents.... I applied the stickers before I took pics. :-[ But the treads and number were of course stickers. One thing I don't like is that the number 3 was the only option. Would have been nice if you could choose a number, would make customizing easier.

front of the swimmer

Love the back of her suit

A view with the swim cap off. As you can see the cap goes directly on her head, like hair.

5201 Javelin Thrower

Front of the box

back of the box

Box contents. The javelin is very bendable, which I guess is supposed to make it less able to poke eyes out. Seems it wouldn't make that much difference...

Back view

And an action shot. Love the sneakers with the bikini bottom. This same klicky could be used as a runner if you take away the javelin.

contents..... Chris actually put this one together, but I'm assuming the target came as a sticker which he applied

Front view of the klicky

great pictures bb, thanks. there are some things I did not know and now with your review I am able to adjust my order.

I am not sure about the use of the fat male klicky body, Maybe geobra should make a muscular body, it just does not look right for being ones who represent the top athletes of the world.

I am really liking this theme more and more and do hope it eventually get a second run

Great idea, skiing, skating, ice hockey, luge, lots of the parts are already in existence

I had no idea the IOC  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Olympic_Games) had so many issues

"The rise of television as a global medium for communication enhanced the profile of the Games. It created an income stream, via the sale of broadcast rights and advertising, which has become lucrative for the IOC. This allowed outside interests, such as television companies and corporate sponsors, to exert influence. The IOC has had to address several criticisms, internal scandals, the use of performance enhancing drugs by Winter Olympians, as well as a political boycott of the Winter Olympics. Nations have used the Winter Games to showcase the claimed superiority of their political systems."

thanks for showing all those close-up photos bb!
and we can see that PM is taking the trouble to print on their backs as well!

and special thanks for the red cap...I hope they make a black one someday....I can easily make some Asian 'hair cuts' and opera masks....assuming you can swivel/rotate those caps in any direction....I think the rear is thicker right? reversed and with eyeholes cut out, he'll make a fearsome wrestler's full headmask too
...there's so much possibilities fo this swimming cap even without thinking about it ;)

are the torso and legs of the (fat?) weight thrower new? (or exactly the same as the weight-lifter?)can you please take a side view, bb?

Darth Vader can sure use those 'unlighted' javelins too ;)

Excellent reviews, Bonnie, of some excellent sets.  I must say that the gym based sets are my favourite and I guess may be with children as you have more posing opportunities with them.

Look forward to the rest of the reviews.

Yeah, they're both fat klickys. I'll take a side shot of both of them this evening.

And yes! That javelin does look like Darth Maul's double-sided light saber. ;D

Excellent reviews, Bonnie, of some excellent sets.  I must say that the gym based sets are my favourite and I guess may be with children as you have more posing opportunities with them.

The gymnastics sets are definitely my favorites, too, especially since that's one of my favorite olympic events to watch, along with swimming, diving, pole vault, running, various boating events... ok I like a lot of stuff. But that's got to be my favorite.

I was remembering as I put those sets together, having gymnastis barbies years ago that came out during one olympic year, and how difficult it was to pose them doing anything exciting, even though they included little hooks so their hands could grip the parallel bars. Playmobil is much easier to pose on this kind of thing!

Great sets!   Thanks for the photos. I want them all!

I wonder where those athletes are from. Why don’t we guess it according to uniform colors, flags, sport tradition in country or any other parameter you may have? If we think about Olympics - someone has to be from Greece, London 2012 – someone from UK, Playmobil – someone from Germany and you may want to include your own country. My first guess:

Ok Cheng, here we go. First a sideshot wearing the cap normally.

Now I reverse the cap. It cannot actually snap down onto the head properly, just as hair cannot be snapped on properly.

A shot of how it looks from the front when it is on backwards, only half-way covering the eyes:

The inside of the cap:

Now, if we do tilt it far enough down to cover the face, this is how it looks from the back:

And now a sideshot of the two fat guys, who seem to have gotten in an argument about who is stronger. ;)

Hope those pics help.

I dont mind the fat clickies much, could always use other clickies in sportswear for it. All clickies in athletic wear seem to be thin, these guys could be used for clickies that want to get back into shape.  :)

thanks for those extra photos bb! ;)
ahh...too bad, the swimming cap is too short...its quite difficult to core underneath to let it be fulled further down her face and at least hide the rim of the rear of her head.
..and...too bad the weight thrower is just as fat as the lifter :P no olympics for me...maybe just buy the judokas for their belts ;D

looking at the sideview shot of the swimmer's cap, reversed, it can cover to just above the mouth but have to trim the head(a desperate last resort which i'm against of course) :P :o :D :P if i cant core/recess it further....so i'll custom a masked WWF wrestler with the weight lifter's body someday if Fi?ures doesnt launch one ;)

Can the legs of the gymnasts move independently?
I thought they were the same as swim suit klickies but I've seen an eBay advert where the gymnast is on the balance beam-one leg on the beam and one leg in the air.  :hmm:

No, they aren't made to move independently. It must have been a custom. It sure would be nice if they could!

for more muscular klickies, maybe it is an idea to use the (red) weightlifter and put the red armcoats from on of the arctic expedition guys (if it is the same red colour). Actually, I'm not sure if it is the arctic theme- I mean the sleeves of a wintercoat in that colour.

Thanks for the review!
