Title: New in 2012/2013.
Post by: Erik on September 17, 2012, 12:20:23
Enjoy, and thank you to the original German poster! :)

I like the new fairies, and the "Super plus" wizard(s) and "wolf warrior" too!!!

Fi?ures series 4.
A bit "weak" in my book, but I LOVE "Gandalf the green" and the BLUE alien!!! ;D
(And is that a "hula" girl I see, or just another Indian maid?)

OH HOLY! Thank you for sharing! Like the new fairies, too. The wolf knight kind of makes me think of the Assasins creed series. But -of course- I love the new animals! They brought back the mountain goat AND his family :woohoo: :woohoo: and did I spot there new types of cows?! AND the marmot?     Again: thanks for sharing!

Ibex!   It's finally been re-released! :yippee: Love that theme, the sky car is great, and will be useful in many themes! And I see some things i really like in that new vacation theme, like the changing rooms and the new tents! Did I see Snow White and Rapunzel in those F?gures?

I just noticed in that angel and devil special, the angel is sitting on a cloud! I had talked a while back about how playmobil clouds would be awesome, they could be baseplates for a flying things theme. I think they spy on us here.

Thank you, Erik, there are some interesting things there, especially the cable car.

Looks like being a cheap year for me, with no new big theme that I want all the sets of.

The Fi?ures are getting less interesting with each release too, 3-4 of each set of 12 that I'm interested in, the rest are just repeats of existing figures with very little variation.

Here's hoping for Ancient Greeks, Aztecs or Feudal Japanese for 2014.

Thanks for sharing. I like most of what i have seen. The wolf knight looks like they used the torso from the medicine man special with the legs of the cavemen. Im not into fairies but i like the boat.

I also like the boat, though I think green would work a lot better (and not scare away insecure males! ;) )

I see a lot of useful stuff in that fairy theme, too, especially the boat. I'm not in to fantasy themes at all, but I often buy all the fairy sets because of baseplates, plants, and other parts. Plus I see the afro hair is in there, and sleeveless black arms. Plus I like those arms that are green three quarters of the way up, like gloves. Really beautiful and could make a very elegant lady custom. Those giant butterflies could also be useful for a sign or decorations outside an insect exhibit or butterfly walk-through at a zoo.

Was rewatching my fave Xena ep yesterday, and though about how useful those arms in BROWN would be, to make myself a Queen Melosa

Yeah, that's an arm style we have needed for a long time. It has a lot uf uses in fantasy, gothic, victorian, even modern customs.

Actually, I kinda strongly dislike it as a glove for a fancy woman...

End OT  :-[

Are those cows in the pics? With something on their heads? What? Can't wait for better pics. (tonight I shall lock the wallet someplace.. just sayin')

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out what's with the cows, too. Maybe I just don't know enough about Switzerland. Btw, the marmots are fantastic too. Now I'll have prairie dogs in my western scenes! Not to mention a prairie dog exhibit!

And those tents... Are those plastic? - not the core theme not the core theme not the core theme not the core theme not the core theme not the core theme not the core theme not the core theme. This isn't working.

Yeah. In their case, it's the latter. There's been plenty of those sets.

I wish they'd put the pics on the site

What's with that weird open-petal-like thingamajig? Looks to belong with the aliens too..  The elves' vegetation looks awesome.

I could do without another freakish tall clown... But a new alien.. and a roman! :)  And I guess the got the OBVIOUS. That hair is PERFECT for a mad scientist!

I really like the mountain house.. must cost a fortune :(

I hope, but I know its a slim chance, that the house is expandable.

In the US the tall clown goes for a super premeim and to get one for $2.99 is great news. I saw a custom tall model made with one and it was very clever

Yes those plants look great, and I wonder if that open pedal thing will close up and look like a flower bud ready to open?

Yeah, shame about system WHY. It's just that the house would look good in a more ancient setting, I think.. Though I need to look better at it (and the price).

About the clown, we just recently went to the mount 3 to get a pair of tall legs back... for the sake of completion.. I never liked those, and we traded most of them..

I think the petaly thing has a blinkie-winkie.. not good...

It looks like the house is a front only with open back for play, you can see sky through the windows. That means you're only really getting half a house. I suspect it'll retail for $50-70, and for half a house, even a nice new style of house, that's a lot.

It looks to me like it has a full roof and is pretty much square, not just a house front. Of course it has an open back, how else would you see inside?

Well, the ancient west ones had doors on the back. And even the old assembly ones had an open frame in the back... but they weren't just a front...

I believe the cross on the mountain top is an accurate landmark, not an attempt on the part of Geobra to promote Christianity. It's common in that area to mark the summit with a cross.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summit_cross

Playmobil does include objects having to do with worship for other religions, when it applies to a set. Like Kachina dolls in the indian sets (and medicine men), african masks, and Roman Standards, which were revered like idols much more than flags are in modern times. And the egyptian sets had items having to do with ancient Egyptian belief in the afterlife, not to mention a temple and incense. So I think it's unfair to say it is propoganda.

Yes plamobil has made some other classical religious items but the ones were quite hard for a kid to recognize. A kid will instantly know the Christan cross and this one has a very prominent location. I am not complaining I just want to see more for diversity's sake. There are a lot of other modern religions on this planet

Very happy about the cable funicular, I've been wanting something like that fir use in a zoo for a long time.  A bit like the cable system at the San Diego zoo.
Great mountain animals and the Swiss cattle will be a nice variation.
It all seems a little short, like we are missing a theme or two compared to recent years.

Yep. ;D I had the same thing in mind, to try to modify it for a zipline to fly over the elephant exhibit. Or I might just leave it as a cable car to fly over, so that it's more available to young children, the disabled, etc.

It's very nice to see a new theme and I agree the mountain house looks pretty great (although I'm a bit concerned about the inside). It's a lovely combo of wood and stone and it looks very authentic.

I'm not too sure about the fairy-type theme though. Maybe I need a better look, but it doesn't look that good imo

thanks for sharing and thanks everyone for your reviews.

this is the first time I've seen the Fi?ures 4 AND 5 :P
they definitely overshadow the Specials.....so thank you Geobra!

but if I may say a little about the ninja & samurai :-\
the samurai looks even more wrong(I bought the samurai special and will buy one of these golden(???) samurai too just out of curiosity).
(shy to say, Geobra totally ignored my customs :-[ )
no improved legs (maybe I'm wrong...will wait for clearer photos)

and the ninja?
much better (I cant wait to see clearer photos of his new legs...I need tons of these legs in multi colours for samurai soldiers and fighting monks YAYYY  ;D)
but only will have to improve on his head cover...easy ;)

...I suppose these Japanese Fi?ures look just fine to western kids and are easily interchangeable with other Fi?ures' parts for playability :-\

But this is only the interim 2012/2013 catalogue, Tim, not the full 2013 one.
so dear Gordon, a full ancient Japanese theme in late 2013 is still possible? ;D  ;)

Thanks for posting these pics!!  :wow:

Fairy theme;
Hmm... not for me, perhaps just some parts here and there.
Isn't the boat based on the vikingship's hull?

Special Plus's;
Not much for me there though I'll have to get the princess and the pirate, of course.
At first instance I believe the pirate's torso has the same blue tatoos as the give-away pirate from the Nürnberg Toyfair 2011. (like the pirate captain from the 5135-ship, but blue tatoos instead of green ones)

Mountain Theme:
(is it debatable if it's Switzerland or Austia?); if that house turns out to be more then a facade I could perhaps use it as a 18th century country/farmhouse, so that one will need a closer look.

Figures 4 & 5:
Some very nice ones there!!

Pirates' schooner:
Darn, another one!!  It is extremely similar as the black-blue schooner from sets 3029 / 3860 / 4067, with the difference that the blue colour is now green and the seasnake on the main black sail is red instead of white. The klickies are exactly the same ones as in those previous sets... :-\
But of course I'll HAVE to add this ship to my collection, though I'm not in a real need for more schooners so I'll probably stick to buying just 1 this time.
I wonder how expensive the ship will be, considering the high prices these days and the inclusion of the RC-module.

A thought:

As the 2012-2013 cataloque is already out and these new sets weren't included, then in which catalogue will these new sets appear??
When from an already leaked 2013 catalogue, then the other new sets/themes for the 2nd half of 2013 should be included as well ... Or will there now be a 1st half 2013 and a 2nd half 2013 catalogue?!

We were just commenting this morning that it was strange that the creepy rabbits hadn't shown up. Me and my big mouth.

Wow, thanks so much for the detailed pics, zookeeper!

Nice to see the inside of the chalet, it looks pretty good.

Those fairies have anime-inspired eyes! :o That's terrible! Hope that's not a trend.

Nice to see another indian maiden in an egg, it will be easy to buy multiples, and we're always short on women. One in the F?gures, too.

In that pool set, I spy a clear water bottle, and arm floaties!

I hadn't even noticed that! I thought they were two different sets! Anyway, the whole set (except of the tent) is pretty usefull for the beach or even the zoo   , if you remove the "camping" sighn.  Well, maybe you can use the tent for the beach theme somehow...

But there is always a reason to buy more Playmobil, you know.

Well I have taken time to study the photos of the sets we know about and I am largely very pleased with the new batch.

I do like the camping theme although I'm not sure about the SUV, as it looks very large and perhaps out of scale.

The Swiss mountain theme is great and reminds me of some fab holidays. The cable car is excellent!

I'm keen to see close-up photos of the fairies. The faces look a bit 'Avatar' like but perhaps they have the option of normal faces too. I do like the boat.

The specials plus and the Fi?ures series 4 and 5 will all be added to my collection also, as will the easter eggs.

I am surprised that there are not more photos at this stage as there seems to be a shortage of sets if this is a full years worth of releases. I suspect this may just be the first half year. I expect to see a new hospital theme in 2013, probably including a maternity ward now that we have the pregnant woman mold. I also expect an asian theme in 2013 too.

My wallet is cringing as I'll be buying it all

Is it just me, or are they less creative with female figures than with the male ones?

Theres always some nice ones there, but always quite a few that seem rather generic. Like theres always two or three princesses in a fancy dress.
The tennis and mp3 lady also seem very similar.  The princesses seem to pretty much always wear pink too, they should at least go for some other colors.

I don't know. I tend to like the girl figures better than the guy ones. I don't want aliens and clowns and stuff, I just want historical and fantasy figures. I could definitely use less pink (how many blonde princesses in pink dresses do we need?), but I'm a sucker for the hoop skirts. Anyhow, Snow White has blue and yellow, and there's a Special princess in a lovely yellow dress.

I think it's a matter of taste and interests. To me all the boys F?gures seem repetitive and uninteresting, just a bunch of knights and various warriors, and some sort of space dude or alien, boring. The girls F?gures seem absolutely fantastic to me!

From these pics, I don't really have a problem with the eyes... I think they're good, and would look good on males too.. I just wish they had normal mouths, same color. Now what I can't see is if the mouths are common playmomouths done in some weird lighter color (redish/pink), or it's one of those.... less... tasteful ones, like the working lady in the saloon. Those are NOT good for a fairy.. IMO.

Nice to see the harp in a more reasonable color this time. I don't like the trend of the painted details on the unicorns like the pegasus had. I like my animals to look like animals, even fantasy ones. The fairies in general are looking a lot like the styling of the Schleich fairy worlds (http://tgftoys.com/World-of-Elves-Fairies_c614.htm) sets except without the nice looking males.

I love the schleich elves - got the boat last december or so..

And then playmobil makes a ... PINK.. boat?!

Is that a "wrap around" skirt, or new legs for the bikini figures (the black fairy and the blond on the boat)?

They don't seem to sit :(  Guess we'll have to wait.

on closer inspection I see what you mean, though I would guess that it is actually 2 new skirts (probably complete leg pieces) as the black fairy skirt looks like it have more slits/design through which you can see both feet at the bottom.

I agree. This makes them look so... I don't know. I do notice Playmobil is really making a big diffrence between boy and girl pm. All the girl sets become more and more pink and anime :(
btw, I spotted the 'new' fox with black eyes :) I do like they are bringing back the forest animals like the raccoons and skunks.

Yes, definetely 2 designs (the black fairy's seems to be leafy on the bottom)... but my concern was the "type"

(this is all my opinion, DUH!  :D )

Agree on the mad scientist (it IS the ONLY obvious use for that hair, IMO)... The "singer" must be one of.. THOSE "singers". (to me, apparently not even for parts, with those silly striped pants that seem that needs a change of diaper  :P)

About the girls, my sister thinks the top right one is a hawaiian (sp?) with a straw skirt and a flower necklace (bet she's not topless!  ;) )

The one with the sword must be a pirate, like someone mentioned. After all, Pirates had a female one this last time.

Figures 5, the first is another lady/princess/whatever.

The archer, with those colors and designs, to me is obviously something along the lines of an elvish archer  (shame the green of the gloves is no match  still, probably my favorite)

I am glad to see unicorns with saddles like I wanted, but they look so bizarre and too colourful.

A pain because you can't use the "bracers" on them :(

You can use the thick wrist version bracers, but those aren't nearly as good. The thick wrists allow for much less customisation. :(

The fairies in general are looking a lot like the styling of the Schleich fairy worlds (http://tgftoys.com/World-of-Elves-Fairies_c614.htm) sets except without the nice looking males.

I thought that too! Interesting...

I agree, I like my animals to look like animals too, I was like that even as a kid (no purple teddy bears for me). I don't mind it quite so much on fantasy ones, though. I think the unicorns and pegasus could be easily customized into carousel horses.

These new adult unicorns are completely different from the old ones. They look to be based on the new style horse molds and are much larger than we've seen in the past. There's a possibility the new style horse tack will fit on them.

Ah, I didn't think of that. I just looked at some of those newer horses - do they not have indentations for the saddles? It looks like they just wrap under the stomach of the horse. That'd be great if those could be used on these new unicorns.

What's with that rockety things? Can anyone who actually speaks german enlighten me?  :-[

Here is a very poor translation (from Bing):
Double spielspass with the power rockets. the white rocket revolves around its own axis the black produces sound. simply desired rocket stuck up, objective target and shoot down. Yeah! the power rockets are material made of ultra lightweight and you can on the gurtelclip anywhere to be taken.

So . . . I think the idea is that you use the rockets to shoot down the ultralight planes on the opposite page and then the pilots (from the planes) parachute to safety.  Does that make sense?
Title: Re: New in 2012/2013.
Post by: tahra on September 20, 2012, 15:15:22
Well.. I don't think the pilots will parachute by themselves.. (probably doesn't even fit the plane with the parachute)  I think the parachutes work as those of old..

Giving kids rockets to shoot at planes is, IMO, not a good idea. Some idiot could think birds make nice targets..  Anyways, odd for a company that doesn't even have infantry.

Also, the rockets don't take the klicky up, right? So he's just there because.. it's cool to bring a klicky, and it'd be odd to call it playmobil when it has nothing to do with playmobil?

spielspass is matching game, and gurtelclip is a belt clip. So you can attach it to your belt to carry and go out and try to shoot down the flyers with it.

I think some are removable (the skinny bikini ones), but some must be the same, attached to the back  :'(  To make matters worse, that torso has an AMAZING sculpt, ruined by a square hole... Would be awesome if they fixed those. But I doubt it..

I still wonder about the other ones...

sounds great to me and the boys, and yes birds do make great targets, they are called European starlings and we shoot as many as we can. Around here they are an invasive pest that is killing all of our native, needed, bug eating birds. Those starlings just eat our fruit and leave all the bugs.

Big companies are spending a lot of money for market investigation, they hire agencies to set up official accounts in social networks (and to fake reviews at shopping-platforms) and they're annoying people calling them on the phone for customer questioning, all to get an idea about what the potential customers are thinking about their products. Nowadays an honest customer-feedback is pure gold in nearly every branch.

For that it would be idiotic if Geobra would not take advantage of the different forums in their main markets while other companies are fighting for every "fan" on facebook. I'm sure there is somebody at Geobra who filters and summarizes the reactions about novelties, product quality and even new ideas (in word or picture). There were different examples in the past when new sets or parts had a suspicious similarity to customs that were presented by forum-users two years earlier ;)

@bonnie: I liked your idea about the cloud-baseplates much more than this cloud but its a cool thing for some future plane-in-flight-dios etc.

@tiermann&bonnie: My first thought on the new funicular was the cable-car at sandiego-zoo, too. That was one of my dreams for my playmo-zoo since i was a child and i still can't really believe that it'll become reality (still have to figure out where i get the money for 10-15 of this set  ). I hope there'll be a way to extend the line with additional poles to get a route around the whole zoo.

Well, since they're listening, ;D the next thing that would be awesome is a train that can be used as a train to go around the zoo. What zoo doesn't have a train? It's pretty much a necessity. It wouldn't even have to run on tracks or be electric, it could just be a roll-along tram. And a carousel is getting to be pretty much required, too!

I agree!  I think it is a beauty.  Do you think its construction is System X, Steck or a hybrid?  I don't see any holes in the floor or walls, so maybe Steck.   :crossed:

I too wish it was steck but I doubt it. To me it looks like it is 3 large rock wall pieces w/wood sections on top and they attach at the corners. For some reason it reminds me of the system the tree fort is made of.

I wonder what kind of oven is in there

I think you are talking about the red barn I had no idea where to put so just threw it in  I had so many parents say what a joy it was to see a toy look so realistic and why do they have to add all the colors to toys today? Many moms said their kids prefer toys to be realistic in design and look

It makes me think of the tree fort too. I think it's because of the shape of the roof.

Couldn't agree more about the realistic colors. I think that was part of what drew me to the toys as a seven-year-old. If the covered wagon had been pink I would have hated it.

I laso think the cabin is one of the best small buildings of the last few years. I've always hated the many cut-outs and 45° oblique floorplates in the buildings for so called higer playability. This is just a straight rectangular building with a beautiful design and colours. I like the wooden look of the 1st floor and the porch. The house will definitely fit a lot of themes.

As to figures 4 en 5, a lot of useful parts are there to keep customising forever  :yippee: :yippee: I like the new rapunzel style hairpiece.

As to the fairy theme, there seems to be a darker green version of the willow's leaves, very nice and a lot better than the first fluo green version. Those leaves were made of a soft rubber-like plastic and couldn't be painted well.

As much as I do not like the soft rubber and all the willow was one instance where it actually made the tree realistic in nature. Willow trees have this "bright" appearance compared to other trees. They also have a "soft" feel to them especially weeping willows .

I agree, I really loved the willow tree, though it didn't seem to have enough branches to give as full an appearance as I would like.

After going back through and looking at the pictures again I now wish for 2 trains!  One passenger train to go along with the Swiss Alps feel, the other a monorail type that could be used in a zoo.

I have so many ideas running through my head for many of the new sets (including parts of the fairy sets- and I generally dislike the fairy theme.)

My wishlist is getting larger and larger.  With the new mountain (and goats) we need a Snow Leopard!  I am planning an awesome zoo!

ooohhh...such nice stuff! I love the alpine cabin and was excited about the fairies until I noted the colours. Geobra - if you are listening - PLEASE don't give up the seemingly niche market of natural looking toys. Girls don't want pink all the time. Why couldn't the boat have been dark green or brown or something? Loving the green wizard figure. I must get more figures. I only have a very few from the first series.

--[edit]--

I'll edit this message, instead of adding a new entry.

I see people speaking so little about the new Special Plus, in this thread ... I like a few of them and, of the series of Specials that there's been lately, I guess this is the one I'll get to buy the geater number of them. (Usually in each series there's only one or two that I "must-have", in this series there's much more than only one or two.)

Here they are, in order of preference:

5295, Persian/Turkish (...) wizard with ghost: :love: perfect set;
5412, timber guy (too bad it isn't a medieval civilian ::) but that's okay ;) );
5408, wolf warrior: not perfect but quite cool :) ;
5293, a green knight: kinda' cool ::) ...;
[5294], architect-engineer (between brackets because not exactly a must-have, but I'll get one, I like it well ... I don't usually buy modern city 8} ).

Maybe I'll buy the little angel and devil too (5411).

(Must say something about red knight and pirate with cannon: they are shamefully ugly  :0 ... The night is another one that looks more like an astronaut than like a knight to me  ... Now there seem to be one in each series of Specials, from some time ago  what a shame, shame on Zirndorf!)

Others are indifferent to me. I should get one yellow lady, but I know I won't, and that's okay, but she looks okay.

I agree on what was said about the willow tree. I'll probably buy the whole set just for that.

+ I've been wondering about that very clear distiction between girls and boys sets too. Do you think this is what the surveys and customer reactions pointed out: 'girls want pink, boys want weapons'?
I simply hate that idea  :-\

There are now several big sets and even themes that I would definitely go for if they weren't so distinctly 'girllike': the princess castle, the hotel and all its add-ons, the fairy garden...

Post by: bonniebeth on October 14, 2012, 13:13:24
Well, that's the general trend in toys at least here in the US right now. THere are huge sections in every toy store of nauseatingly girly toys... pink and frilly and glittery and with disney princess faces plastered all over them. I was noticing at Target, even the shelving units are pink on half the aisles, and blue on half the aisles, in their toy sections. In the blue aisles are toys that really could appeal to both genders, like legos and electronic stuff, but every girl is going straight for the pink aisles with polly pocket, bratz, barbies, and princess dresses, plus things that could have appealed to boys, like zhuzhus and littlest pet shop. Seems a crazy thing for toy companies to be doing, severely limiting their markets on both ends. For playmobil, it's especially bad because it is placed on the blue aisles, so they can make girly sets all day long and girls will never see them because they are on the blue shelves. Unless maybe they are hoping to change that. But I don't like the trend at all. I grew up with one brother and no sisters and we played together all the time. Now I think it would be hard for a brother and sister to find anything in common to play with. :-\

Well when I first saw (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=11716.msg218874#msg218874) the cross on the mountain I was a bit amused to its propaganda-ish intent. I would be totally fine with religion as long as it is used to educate not propagate. If Geobra had released educational religious sets I would be more than happy as I would love to use toys to teach my sons all the diffrent religions that exist and one is not better than the other.

Seems Goebra now decided to remove the cross and not have it in the set, gee thanks Kenc

I know some of the Christians will be upset but think of the bigger picture and what it is teaching kids.

I think it is a good move for a "modern" set but for sets that are decorative in nature (nativity) and historical (or quasi-historical) I hope they will continue to produce "religious" figures... we won't ever be able to have proper Asian themes without including their priests and monks... and what use is a medieval setup without including the bulk of medieval history? We got Egyptian priests not long ago though so I am guessing this is a "we don't want to be taken out of context" thing... that and the PR department must have gotten notified that the cross was even in there... somehow    ::)

I'm AGAINST the removal of the cross and will complain about it's deletion!   :hehe:

Seriously, I'm not a religious fanatic (far from, one could rather describe me as an agnosticus), but a cross is part of  European and American culture! It it used indeed as a Christian symbol, and in mountainous Europe as a landmark as well.
In the Roman Empire in the centuries before JC, a big wooden cross was the equivalent of... a gallow in later centuries!

Darn, it is just a cross on the top of a mountain!! Oh yeah, but maybe the Taliban & Co. will get upset by such a toy and send suicide-bombers to Geobra's factory in Dietenhofen!  ::) What does one expect to get to see on the top of a Swiss or Austrian mountain? A Totem? A minaret??

Congratulations to the complainers, you probably have succeeded now in convincing Geobra to never release a Templar Knight, a medieval monk or a f****** nun again!  Not even mentioning a church. >:(

I don't think one would associate a cross on an Alpine mountain with executions.

The symbol dates back to ancient Egypt, and perhaps even earlier, and was not a nice symbol. However, I also think no one will associate the marker on top of a mountain with that or with execution. It seems an obvious choice since that is what is really used on mountain tops.

It's a monument! It's silly to pretend it doesn't exist in real life.

or just start making other religions as well, a better option in my opinion  ;) and it opens up new markets and set ideas. There are plenty of sets to satisfy the atheist but we are very limited in the religions of the world

They've done some Ancient Egyptian stuff and things that could be seen as druid-ish. It would be awesome if they did some Greek/Roman gods. Noah is present in three major religions (and nearly every cultural in the world has a flood story). I would love to see more Old Testament figures.

The options for sets for modern religions are limited because of design feasibility and cultural acceptance. It's easier to offend people and do ''something wrong'' when trying to represent a religion with an entirely different cultural background. Joseph can wear bright red, which makes no sense given the period and his social status, and no one cares. They've already made some faux pas in the Native American sets; imagine how much more risk would be involved in specifically tackling modern religions. Hindu gods and even Buddha would be very challenging to represent in klicky form. They could do Buddhist monks, though they'd look random since there isn't an existing theme for them, unless you just want to throw them amongst the modern klickies. A klicky Muhammad would get them death threats. Klickies can't kneel, so a mosque is out. A rabbi would be interesting, as would Hanukkah sets.

Ultimately, from a business standpoint, they know Nativity sets, Noah's Ark, and St. Nick will sell because these are themes that have a long-standing tradition of being represented as toys in their main markets. It's not like they did the Last Supper. They're picking themes they know parents will buy.

For me personally, I say, bring it on! I want saints and nuns and Greek goddesses and monks and menorahs and churches and cathedrals and chapels and temples....

And while we're at it, pink nuns would be awesome.  ;)

All very good points Ismene. You're right, nearly every culture in the world has a flood legend, so it is not unique to Christianity. Granted the set depicts it in the way usually depicted by Christians, but that is the way it is familiar to the entire western world, and kids wouldn't relate to it otherwise. That traditional ark looks nothing like the Bible describes, anyway, it's just a popular fictionalized way to depict it in children's stories.

And you're right that Islam would be difficult to represent... they don't believe in making any sort of images of living things, as they are considered idols, so the whole idea would be offensive to their beliefs.

But then why not do political monuments as well, they exist or at least the ones that have not been destroyed? Wouldn't it also be silly to ignore them as well?  They are a part of the culture and history of a nation.  You see if a company only were producing one political parties symbols and they never complimented it with other ones, then claimed "oh yes we did, just look at this 1000 year old one for the lost city of Atlanta" it just becomes a political statement/advertising for one modern party.

I again am not against the symbol, just that it should be accompanied with other modern symbols that are of different backgrounds. You can not have yang with out yin. I personally want lots more religion,  just more diversity. Its similar to why I do not want only white klickies in my towns. There are people of all kinds and I want them all to be represented for a realistic world.

Yes every one has a story, I was talking to some professors the other night and a few gave me this elaborate alien story. An alien was genetically modified with some ape to make slave humans to mine gold. The humans would not listen so they scratched the plan. A large chunk of ice fell into the ocean and created a wave to cover the land. One alien told a lone human to build a boat as it knew the ice was melting and would slip off and make the wave. ....you are all familiar with the repetitive, boring, unimaginative stories

You have to wonder what sort of person would complain about a cross symbol on a mountain, though. Honestly: don't people have better things to do with their lives? It's like those people who complain about crucifixes in classrooms, in Europe. What these people have to understand is that religion is not just about religion (as silly as that may sound). It is also about culture. And while I am not a particularly fervent Catholic, I am certainly proud of my Catholic heritage. It is what made me - and the continent I live in - what I am and what it is. I don't mind atheists, buddhists, hippies etc - they're all free to do whatever it is they do to get their kicks, but there are certain boundaries I do not cross and which I do not want others to cross. I am not going to a Muslim country and ask them to start removing their crescent symbols from atop their minarets, for eg - because it's not only their religion but also their culture. And I would like the same thing for Europe and the Christian religion. Now - I am not following what's going on over at the PCC because I haven't joined yet, so I am not really sure what's going on and whether PM has bowed to pressure to get these crosses removed. And lastly, I would like to point something out that relates to American members. Now: I absolutely love America, American people and the American way of life: last year I visited three times and loved each and every one of those trips. But there's a world of difference between America (and the outlook of American people) and Europe (and the outlook of Europeans. Sometimes it's difficult for Americans to fully understand and appreciate what is dear to us in Europe, and vice versa of course. And the Christian religion in its cultural form (as opposed to the plainly religious) - a cultural form that goes back two millenia - is one of them. There. I hope I haven't offended anyone this time around  :)

Personally, I find Noah's set offensive... though I never actually complained to playmobil.  Not that cross on the mountain.. and though I'm completely ok with their decision, considering the rest, I don't really understand it.

(as for cruxifixes in public places, if they're PUBLIC, with MY money, I'm against it - but OT, and better not go there.)

Yes, I meant with everyone's money, including mine. The law is SUPPOSED to be that the State has no religion. So, they should NOT be funding one.  But we're VERY OT...

I  had to go and peer at the catalogue again to see what you meant here - buuut...(looking at the picture with the boat on it) you mean like with the yellow one, back centre?  (and the one on the swing, earlier on in the cataloge?) - um...kind of see what you're saying, but I honestly don't think I'd have noticed it if you hadn't pointed it out!
Trust me, it's not your eyes that are going ;)

 :yippee:

Maybe they're just prototypes? Cause the new bodies don't have the "space" to fit a skirt about like that.. I don't know.. I'm not too keen on these bodies, and I'm REALLY not ready to face a new type I don't like...

You got me thinking...and looking at the tutu's some of the new fairies are wearing, I trotted upstairs to my figures box and looked again at the series 2 cheerleader body.  Then I took her apart and tried the body with the legs off one of the others...a good few mm difference!

Now I'm VERY interested to see what these are going to be like - before your comment, the fairies weren't anywhere near the top of my interest list :D

Most themes are too generic to be placed in one specific city, so political monuments don't make sense. But if they were doing a specific city, then I don't see a reason to take out a famous landmark. And it's one small piece in an entire set. Why can't the people who don't want it just throw it out or not buy the set? While I understand your point about including other modern religions, there aren't many possibilities that will be as feasible or as marketable as their current/past religious toys (who, besides Christians, buys plastic representations of an apocalyptic event and gives them to children to play with?). If we continue the analogy of political parties, it's like we have two major parties, with a bunch of smaller ones. One major party buys toys with its landmark. The other major party gets offended seeing a representation of its landmark. And the smaller parties have really intricate landmarks but represent a much smaller part of the market. It's very different than offering klickies in different skin colors, which requires no new molds or new themes. Plus, unless they exaggerate features or play into stereotypes, merely making klickies in different skin colors isn't likely to offend people of those skin colors (though some of the early dark-skinned klickies were a bit questionable). They haven't done my skin color yet; I doubt they will.

Bolingbroke, I agree. It's not a religious issue. It's cultural one. I find it strange that there is no medieval chapel of any sort. That's a huge part of the Middle Ages.

I am interested to see how the fairies will be put together. Even klickies are on a diet these days! Maybe I can get some fairies as gifts, so that I can see them better without dedicating space to the pinkness.

oh, and all i have seen is series 1-3....are there photos of 4 and 5 available??? sheesh! i feel like i have been in a cave!

The fairies seem to have either the body of the series 2 fairy for those in dresses or the ballerina for those with shorter skirts. Except for the newly designed eyes on some, I don't see anything wrong with this upcoming series.

I can't wait to get a new tent for my adventurers. I hope that it'll fit in the adventure truck (4839).

It looks to me like it's a mix. The 'normal' ones are the yellow one with the harp, the white/green one on the boat, and the blue one in the big set. Can't tell about the one in the chariot. The rest are the smaller waist/new style ones. The obvious way to tell is at the waist. If it has a smooth waistline rather than the usual gap then it's new style body. Of course with them in long dresses I don't think they will be able to sit.

That's what I'm afraid of. That would be SOOOO LAME.  And it would have to be a new mold for the lower body.

The normal release of them will be one year after they are released in Germany. Lately they have been offering some to Toys R Us as exclusives, so right now we can get the Western and Horse Ranch themes from them earlier than they will be in general release shops.
