I'm never clear why they try to limit the upper age on Playmobil.

It seems they don't consider collectors like us  ;)!

Maybe it's supposed to be a hint from Playmobil that we aren't taking.

But seriously, the maximum age is pretty lame.  The limits, I suspect, were intended to assist in gift-giving...?
But, without providing standard deviation, how confident could a person be that a child pushing the upper age limit would find Playmobil appealing?

Question:
Why on the instructions that come with sets, under the "WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD - SMALL PARTS" blurb, does it read:

"Ne concerne que les USA"
Translation: "Not a concern except in the USA" (???)

Is that for the sake of Quebec, in which dual French and English statements are required, except, because the warning specifically addresses US law, therefore, it doesn't fall under Quebec's jurisdiction and can be left untranslated?

PS. Worse, I know people who actually need these warnings.  Only in America (?).  "No, you don't understand, my two year old is smarter than other kids and can handle it unsupervised."

Why do Mickey D's beverage cups say something like WARNING: CONTENTS MAYBE HOT now  ;)? Maybe they should have put,.............never mind we are talking about adults for that label aren't we, we won't go there, only in the US !

Not to worry my dear Playmofriends ...

Mr. Louis Marx (former owner of Marx Toys and Playmobil UK licensee) appeared to me in a dream last night. He asked me to please assure everyone that the label does not read from ages 3 to 9 (or 12), but the label actually reads 3 to the 12th power! (Louis said that they originally had it at 3 to the 9th power, but that he didn't think that was quite old enough.) ...

All the best,
Richard

Heh, we joke about how Americans appear to lack common sense due to the plethora of pithy warnings--

But naturally the less humorous reality is that our tort system, over staffed and under-employed, capitalizes on any opportunity to file a lawsuit.  There are even law firms that file lots of penny-ante lawsuits from recruited clients because the likelihood of the defendant settling out of court (cheaper to pay than fight) amounts to easy money for the lawfirm.

But, yeah, the ubiquitous warnings, even if they actually are in place for legal protection, leave one feeling like one lives in a sheltered, domiciled environment.  I visited the ruins of a mughal sultan's fort near Aurangabad, India and was amazed how, completely unsupervised, I was at liberty to stand atop unbarricaded tower turrets and stare straight over the edge.  Then, of course, return to America where the 25 cent kiddy rides at the mall have seat belts...

Very true, but I guess that's why there is one set of rules for the rest of the world, & another separate one for the US, it's called CYA. In all reality, the woman that caused this warning to be imbedded into the lids now, I heard ordered hot coffee in the drive through, & spilled it in her lap while driving away, cha-ching...

Bill, Quebec does the same thing with its dual English-French mandate (which is why those North American releases have both French and English on the box cover).

Can we mellow out with the nationalist jabs?  I used to think it funny also, until I realized everybody making fun of us has a ton of problems in their own backyard no better or worse from us.

I was making light of what you said about the tort system, & how you said people think their children are smarter than everyone else's until something happens to them due to negligence, & then uses the system to blame others.
It's not a nationalist jab, the way you put it out there, it's reality, & as you said & I quote "Not a concern except in the USA"( ???). What does that mean?

I'm guessing:
Playmobil was required by US law to put the small parts warning in English.
By Quebec law, Playmobil must provide dual French translation for all English print.
But since the English print is only answering to US mandate, Playmobil is recusing itself from the Quebecois mandate for dual French (ergo the explanatory: "Ne concerne que USA")

Very true, but I guess that's why there is one set of rules for the rest of the world, & another separate one for the US, it's called CYA. My mistake about the nationalist jab accusion.  I mistook CYA for "see ya" and thought you were joking everybody wants to emigrate because the US sucks so much.  I finally figured it out.  CYA = slang for "Cover Your Rasputin" (around here the term is sanitized to "cover your butt" so I didn't recognize the acronym).  Yeah, CYA pretty much cripples our culture.  We live in a nation of platitudes and chilly hotel hot tubs because somebody somehow will find a lawyer.

About three months ago some clown on the forum was doing the "I'm from Europe, Hear Me Roar" thing and earned the unofficial nickname from me of "Mecha-godzilla" (I don't remember the guy's actual username, "Aerosol" or something).  With the Bush administration winding down and the European-approved candidate taking the helm, I'm hoping that Aerosol finds a new pet peeve closer to home.

We always laugh with the warnings on bottles when we are in the UK. (never been to the states) "Turn right to open", " Do not consume packaging ",... I find it strange that countries like the UK and USA which are way more liberal then Socialist Belgium, have way more petty rules and restrictions. Ah well...

On another note (just recieved a package) DOn't you just hate it when steck parts look completely good on their pictures on ebay but are completely yellowed when you recieve them.
