Title: A Victorian Cameback

A VICTORIAN COMEBACK
By Tonguello

A lonely and forgotten road 222km from Buenos Aires cuts the green immensity of the fields of La Pampa.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/2.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/2.jpg.html)

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/3.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/3.jpg.html)

A car surfs the somehow well-kept way at an elegant speed. It’s April and winter is finding its way sooner to these secluded parts of the province.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/4.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/4.jpg.html)

-Ma’am?
The passenger at the back sit moved her sight away from the field to look at the driver.
-Ma’am I wanted to tell you… we are all very happy you have come back.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/5.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/5.jpg.html)

-Thank you Mathew, Thank you. She whispered the last words.

To come back. She had never thought she could. Not after so long, and after such pain. It was a miracle. She didn’t choose to leave though… she was forced to go, she had to. When the Government at the time felt she was a threat, they decided to let her know she was their enemy and they took her husband away to show her what they could do. To teach her a lesson… she was not untouchable.
People say that “to leave” is “to die a little”. So then, to protect her baby daughter she left everything else behind. And so she died.
She took refuge in Europe where things were not better but at least she was not alone, and she was free. Family and friends gave her all she needed and she built her new life there. She knocked on every politician’s and royalty’s door making use of her title, asking for help and advice. She was Countess von Hess after all. She survived, she blossomed.
And now 37 years later, she was immersed in the middle of a green, grassy dream. She was going home.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/6.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/6.jpg.html)

-Ma’am, we are there.
They have come to a rotten kissing gate, the former entrance to a magnificent Estancia. Today, a dead, decadent pile of wood and wire that presented no resistance to strangers, nor a hopeful welcome sight.
From the distance she could see the main house, still there but quite different. The trees were long cut and used for fire. The park was un-kept and the flowers all dead, the sculptures long gone and the birds lost.
The closer they got, the better she could see the devastating results of neglect and vandalism. Close enough she saw someone in the attic, watching the car in the distance.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/7.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/7.jpg.html)

-Surely one of the men waiting for me - she thought. –I told them not to get in without me. I wanted to be the first one.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/8.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/8.jpg.html)

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/9.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/9.jpg.html)

Two men she didn’t know were there, and also a friendly and familiar face.  Finally one. The car parked near the main entrance, or what was left of it. Mathew got out and helped her to descend.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/10.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/10.jpg.html)

-Ma’am it is a pleasure to have you back here. Welcome.
-Thank you Mr Mayor, it is a pleasure to see you again.
-Let me introduce you. This is General Charles Mellen.
-Nice to meet you Ma’am.
-Enchanté
-And this is Chief of Police Arthur Perz.
-A pleasure, Your Highness.
-A pleasure for me too. Please, call me Ma’am, or Mrs von Hess. Tell me gentlemen. What happened here all these years?

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/11.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/11.jpg.html)

-Well, at first the State was taken as a summer house for the members of the Government, a sort of recreational spa, if you will. Later on, it became the clandestine Head Quarters and torture site of the parallel government…
-Please, avoid that sort of information Mayor.
-Forgive me Ma’am. Eventually Democracy was restored and the house was abandoned. Times were very tuff and people needed a roof… and you know… vandalism, thieves, and homeless people took over all the states like this one.
-Yes, I can imagine.
-Mrs von Hess if you allow me. What are your plans for this house? - Asked General Mellen.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/12.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/12.jpg.html)

-Well, the Estate is mine and I’m here to claim it and restore it to its prime. I already talked to the architect and works will start next week and will go on until I come back from England. I am going to spend the summer at St. Regent Street and visiting friends. -She said going to the main door.
-But Ma’am you can’t… he started  but was shut by her look.
-General, are you going to deny me what is rightfully mine? Again?
And with that he spoke no more. When she was approaching the door she turned and asked them.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/13.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/13.jpg.html)

-Is everything alright inside? Which one of you did I see in the attic from the road?
-Ma’am we haven’t been inside yet, as you requested. If you saw someone, it must have been one of the people that have been taking shelter here. Let me go in with you.
-No, thank you Chief Perz. I must be mistaken. - She lied. –I want to go in alone.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/14.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/14.jpg.html)

She went in and her heart sunk. Everything at the main hall was destroyed, the furniture gone, the antiques missing, the wall paper ripped off, the beautiful parquet and the staircase banister burnt. Her memories seemed the only untouched thing in there.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/15.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/15.jpg.html)

She walked slowly trying to breathe everything in. Room by room she went, studying with shocked delight the floor with missing tiles, the burnt carved frames, the soiled ceilings,  the ruined tapestries and the shelves which must have been full of books, now stolen or destroyed on the floor. Years of history lost.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/16.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/16.jpg.html)

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/17.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/17.jpg.html)

She went up to the first floor afraid of the stairs might fall under her feet. Again, a view that froze her blood. She needed some air; the stench of years of decay was starting to get her.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/18.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/18.jpg.html)

She went out into the terrace and watched the sunset for a while. The first sunset of her new life. What a spectacle compared with what was inside!

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/19.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/19.jpg.html)

With courage she went up another floor to the attic, an empty huge storey fill with dirt. Something caught her eye the instant she was there. - Someone had been here after all, - she thought.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/20.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/20.jpg.html)

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/21.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/21.jpg.html)

There, in the middle of the dusty ruined floor, there was a fresh yellow Lily, her favourite flower.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/22.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/22.jpg.html)

Excellent job Gaston! :wow:
The abandoned house is magnificent.
And I love the story, very sentimental.

Just one thing,
Your Highness was reserved for Princes and Princesses,
I think Counts and Countesses had a different title.

Other then that, great script,
and superb story. :wow:

It is subtle, yet captivating and we do indeed follow this wonderful Lady walking back in familiar steps after such a long time

You have a real talent for story telling  :)

Thank you all very much for your comments! I appreciate it!

@Luis, I made myself the coat, hat and fur trim in the skirt.

@Wot, thank you for the data, but in fact Chief Perz is not very smart, he got to be Chief based on his friendship with bigger fishes, but he lacks character and most of all wits. He is quite illiterate  ;) ;)

You did a really great job on them! They look proffessionally done. It's that same stuff from that guy again I guess? (wow, that's vague... I haven't had coffee yet.)

Excellent story and photos, Gaston.  You have a great way with words.  I like the phrase "with shocked delight" especially; it sums exactly what must have been her mixed feelings on returning.

The costume you have made for her is truly wonderful - it looks just right, it could be Playmobil's own.

And the lily?  Is there a long lost admirer who has waited all these years for her return?  Although if she's off back to London so soon, he may have waited in vain.

Thank you Jenna, Panos and Gordon!  ;D

@bb, yes same stuff, I have to check but I think I had presented this outfit in the customs gallery, I don't remember now....
@Gordon, thanks a lot Sir! I take your prays of my english with shocked delight!  ;D Seriously, thanx a lot! I can't say much about the lilly yet.... I love the suspense.  She is already in England as you know if you have read Karim's story so this is really a flashback...there will be another one (a short one) quite soon.  ;)

What a moving story, so well written with the thread of intrigue running through it. I'd find it hard to write such as story in my own language, let alone one which was my native tongue.

As for the setting, and the photography. It's fantastic.

I am very much looking to the next installment.

Thank you.

Just one thing,
Your Highness was reserved for Princes and Princesses,
I think Counts and Countesses had a different title.
It would be "My lady" or "Your ladyship" in Britain, but can't speak for anywhere else..

Wonderful story and pictures, Tonguello!

I am excited to read, what happens next!

I remember, you already talked about the homemade stuff whith the secret recipe, you use for the dresses.
I still have one question, has it different colors, or to you tint it, or paint it afterwards?

Thanks Bad Mum! and Daniela!  ;D

@Daniela it comes only in white, it looks like made from flour and water in fact, but when it is dry it turns pearly transparent. (I hope you understand the term) It is very ugly looking BTW. So I paint it afterwards. I think you can tint it before but it would be a mess as you have to model it with your hands before it dries... and the color would be fresh... mmm bad combination.  8}
I hope it ends being a secret soon. I'm gonna have to go an beg the guy again to tell me the recipe before he dies! Im sure he didn't invet it so why not tell me???!  >:(

Great beginning of an interesting story! The pictures are full of emotions. I really love them.

But Mrs. von Hess is another highlight. An excellent custom. She looks like an original klicky. Very, very good work.

SEVERAL WEEKS AGO…

-Ma’am? Here is your correspondence and the news paper.  Is there anything else you need?

-Right away ma’am.
-Thank you

She stared at  the envelopes and revise them one by one. “Not the news I’m expecting ” she thought.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/5.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/5.jpg.html)

The view from the Hotel’s balcony distracted her and she lost herself in the beauty of the garden. She had missed this air so much. It was a mid-autum day. The distinct glow of the morning sun in the southern Buenos Aires countryside transported her back to her childhood. Ever since she had been in the mansion, these ghosts from the past disguised as memories, have caught up with her. And the lily has haunted her hopes  every minute since then. Before she left that day, she placed a note over the lily. Surely he would find it. He must have found it, she was telling herself when...

-Excuse me Milady -.  A shy hotel maid said with a smile, looking at the silver tray, afraid to spoil the tea.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/7.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/7.jpg.html)

-Oh yes, sorry, thank you dear-.  She answered putting the letters away.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/8.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/8.jpg.html)

-There is a gentleman at the lobby  to see you Ma’am. He said you are waiting for him.
-Oh yes please let him join me here. It is a beautiful day. I wouldn’t want to go in.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/9.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/9.jpg.html)

Moments later the butler came in accompanied by a fine gentleman. He showed the gentleman to where the Countess was and waited by the table.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/10.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/10.jpg.html)

-Señor  Bustillo, thank you for coming, it’s a pleasure meeting you-. She said raising and extending her hand.
-The pleasure is all mine Ma’am- He answered taking her hand and kissing it.
-Would you like some tea?
-No, thank you; very much.
She nodded to the butler and he left bowing.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/11.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/11.jpg.html)

-Afraid we may spoil some tea on the blueprints?-.  She asked with a naughty smile.
-Well, you know how tidy we architects are. We prefer not to mix food and beverages with plans in the same table!-.  They both laughed at the silly joke.
-Tell me Sr. Bustillo, how is everything going?

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/12.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/12.jpg.html)

-Well Ma’am. Everything is fine, and just ready to start. All had been schedule and  people are waiting for instructions.  I brought you some blueprints for you to look at and approve…

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/13.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/13.jpg.html)

-I don’t need those, I trust you completely. You know the house and you know I want it exactly like it was when we lived there. Money is not a problem, you know that too. I might need some expansion later but so far I want to see the house exactly as I see it in my memories.
-Ma’am you honoured me with your trust, but I insist. I prefer you take a look…
-Sr. Bustillo-, she interrupted. - You’ll do fine. How long do you think the whole remodelling would take?

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/14.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/14.jpg.html)

-I would say between five and seven months.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/15.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/15.jpg.html)

-Perfect. I’ll spend the spring and probably the summer in England. You know where I’ll be staying. Please send me a report every 2 weeks. I want to know how all develops.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/16.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/16.jpg.html)

The butler came back a little agitated. It looked like he had hurried up there.
-I’m sorry to interrupt Ma’am, but this has been left for you at the front desk. We don’t know who left it but as it says “urgent” in red ink, I hurried here.
He handed her a dirty note. She took it nervously. Her hands were slightly shaking but she tried to seem calm as this was nothing out of the ordinary, though that paper could make a world of difference. As soon as she saw the handwriting she knew! “Yes!”  She thought with internal jubilee. Finally!  She stood up elegantly and the architect raised after her.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/17.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/17.jpg.html)

-I’m very sorry Sr. Bustillo, we must end our meeting now. There are urgent matters that need my attention.
-Don’t worry Ma’am, I hope everything is fine. We will be in touch-. He said kissing her hand again before leaving the terrace.
When she found herself alone she turned her view to the garden and for an instant she stared at the magic glow of the morning sun. Or was it the note that brought that glow?
So… she opened  it.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/18.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/2x1/aaa/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/A%20victorian%20comeback%20part%202/18.jpg.html)

At 6pm she had gone down and found Charles with two guests  in one of the terraces of the Hotel.

She told him she would be volunteering at the hospital for a couple of hours and would be back at the hotel at 8pm to have dinner alone in her room.

“No socials tonight?”  He thought. She had said no to his offers of getting a coach or a car for her. “I’m used to the bus” she said. And without goodbyes, she left

Charles stayed there, thinking how unusual this was. She wasn't like that at all.

She walked alone through the deserted suburban road surrounding the hotel, she even pretended to wait for the bus, but when she felt safe under the half light of dusk, she detoured and went into the woods. It was a full moon night and there were clouds in the sky which, for moments, bathed the earth with shadows.

She hadn’t taken that way in years. She had thought she would never do it again. It took her a while to decide to go in.

Even so, here she was, in her woods, covered in a cloak and sneaking into its familiar noisy darkness.

At first everything looked well-known and safe, but as long as she kept going into the heart of the woods she started to worry. So many years had brought too much new life, new greens, new sounds.

The trees she knew so well back then were now too tall for her to recognise, and new plants were covering the path, almost not there anymore.

Blindly she moved forward, taken only by her memories and guided by her heart under the filtered moon light.

After minutes walking she got to a clearing where she saw it.

The old shed. It was not as she remembered. Its state was a lot worse.

Half of the roof was gone and paint had been washed out by so many rains! Now, new life had spread here also, taking the shed as hostage.
She checked her watch. She was early. There were still a few more minutes to 7pm. She went closer to the shed. No one seemed to be there.

“He will come” she thought. Standing by the entrance she took a walk down the memory lane.

A breaking noise shook her up. She turned looking for the origin of the sound. Another one. Stronger.
“Who’s there?” she shouted scared. “Show yourself!”
Footsteps were sounding louder. “Please! Who is there?!”
“Who are you?” a man’s voice shouted back from the darkness.
Knowing where the voice came from, she turned. “I’m here to meet you”
Silence first, then rushing footsteps getting closer and a golden glow.

“Kristine?!” asked a shaggy old man coming out from behind some bushes. He had recognised her face.

“Thomas!” She cried and run to meet him.

They met into a strong embrace. “Oh Tom! You are all right!  Tommy!” she said crying, holding him and stepping away for moments to take a look at him, finally to hold him again.

“Kristine! Thank God you are here, I thought you would never come back!
“Tom, I didn’t know! No one told me you were here. When did you come back? Why you meet me here?”
"I‘ve never left  K.”
“What?” She asked surprised. She stepped back and only then she realised his haggard appearance.

I stayed. I couldn’t leave. I’ve been in hiding all these  years, I’ve been living in this shed. Time has been unkind to me K” He added with a smile.

“Tom…” She said with a sad look caressing his beard. “You are still my baby brother” she smiled back. “ I thought you were in Europe, looking for us at first. Then I simply accepted the possibility of your death”

“I couldn’t make it to the boat K. The night we were going to take the steam to Europe there was an upraise in the city. The police and the militaries went down on everyone and I had to hide. Dozens died that night. When I finally could leave my hiding place, I knew they were looking for me… shouting my name. I run. And then I just knew what to do. I found a dead man who had been shut in the face and I changed our documents. I was dead to them now. But with false documents and no money, I had no place to go. So I came here. I stayed, K”
She was looking  at at him in horror. Crying. She couldn’t speak.
“K, you must leave now. I just wanted you to see me. I'm all right. I wanted to see you. But now you must leave. No one must suspect. Go back!”
“NO!”
“Yes. You must listen to me carefully. You must go on with your everyday life until you come back from Europe to settle, as if nothing had happened. I’ll go on living here till then too. Listen to me K!” He shook her. “ Do not trust Captain Perz. He means no harm but he is a puppet. Coronel Mellen is who moves him and you must be careful. I’ll explain the rest later, don't tell anyone you so me.”

She was shocked and confused. She took money out of her purse, all she had and gave it to him. “Here, use it” she looked hopeless.
“I’ll be all right K, go on now. I’ll see you in a few months. I promise”

Shaking she said goodbye and took the path out of the forest, every once in a while she turned around to give a last look at him. Every time she did, he was there waving, until darkness swallowed everything.

She walked blindly out of the forest and started the way back to the hotel. She stopped for a while to pull herself together, and then she went up the stone steps leading to the terrace.

Once more she found the clerk there, this time giving instructions to a new gardener.
“I’ll take dinner now in my room Charles. And please send two maids. I must pack for Europe at once. I’ll leave tomorrow morning.”

“Yes Ma’am” He bowed and right after that, he followed her inside.

Awesome and touching story Gaston!  I really like the photos in the "dark".  Just enough light to see what's going on but still having the appearance of darkness.  Well done.

Oh dear, I was doing fine until the "You're still my baby brother" part and the tension and emotion got to me particularly as I read on.

You are the most incredible storyteller, Gaston, backed up with the most wonderful photography.

Thank you.

Hello everyone!

A while back I started this project based on a simple clicky that I love. I developed a character based on that clicky and with time it grew and evolved in my mind a thousand times.
The story got to a halt when the Countess went to England for Karim's (playmovictorian) summer garden party project. As I wanted the timeline to be real I was waiting for that project to end so the Countess could come back and continue the story here.
As Karim's personal life made the project's ending delayed I will change my idea about the timeline. So I have decided two things:
1) This project (therefore this story) will continue taking as a premise that the Summer Garden Party has ended and the Countess is coming back to Buenos Aires.
2) While the " A Victorian Comeback" machine starts working again, the Countess will share with you a couple of Plays "on the side". These plays has her as the star of the show, though the stories has anything to do with this one. She would be playing a role, I hope I'm clear about it... it is clear in my mind but I find it hard to explain ...

Anyway... look for the first play very soon at the Story-Telling section.

Time for chapter 4    ;D

She had delayed her returned to Buenos Aires longer than she had wanted, but her plans have changed since she found out that Thomas was alive so her new affaires in Europe needed her there.
When her visit to St. Regent Street was over she went to Paris and took a room at the Ritz as her operation base; to wait, to plan. She needed to tie some more knots, to knock a few more doors.
By now almost everything had been taken care of. Only one more thing was left to do. One more call before boarding the ship that would take her back to America; The Amazing Amazon.
She picked up the phone and dialed herself.

Riiiiiing, riiiiiiing, riing

-Yes? – A nervous voice answered.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5063_zpsd67b9e91.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5063_zpsd67b9e91.jpg.html)

-Miss Sillyn, this is Mrs van…. – she was interrupted.

-I was expecting your call ma’am. I took care of our business already.  I talked to my contact in Buenos Aires and I have arranged an appointment with Captain Brando for August 12th. He won’t know about it until that very same day, as you requested. My contact is very trustworthy ma’am– An awkward silence followed - All is ready Ma’am - She added.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5060_zps40e05030.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5060_zps40e05030.jpg.html)

-All is ready – the countess repeated pensively - Thank you so much, you have been of great help. There will be an envelope at the front desk at the Ritz Hotel for you tomorrow morning. Miss Sillyn have a good day.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5057_zps7b352ec9.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5057_zps7b352ec9.jpg.html)

-Good day ma’am and please call me Penny. – As soon as she finished the sentence the communication cut off.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5062_zpsc88a006e.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5062_zpsc88a006e.jpg.html)

The next morning Miss Penny Sillyn woke up early in her pension room on Rue Le Beck.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5064_zps57374661.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5064_zps57374661.jpg.html)

She ate the remains of her supper from the night before and drunk the cold coffee that was left in the jar.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5065_zps8fd54b90.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5065_zps8fd54b90.jpg.html)

Then she put on her best clothes to try to disguise herself into an upper-class woman.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5067_zpsa1afbfd0.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5067_zpsa1afbfd0.jpg.html)

–That won’t do – She thought looking at herself in the mirror.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5068_zps154c51aa.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5068_zps154c51aa.jpg.html)

–With some luck they will think I’m someone’s secretary with this or a “vedette” from the Moulin Rouge with all this feathers. I certainly look like a Christmasy ostrich! - A knock on her room’s door scattered her thoughts away. She put the hat aside and answered.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/knock_zps5a5bd98d.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/knock_zps5a5bd98d.jpg.html)

-Qui est-ce?
No one answered.
-Qui est la? – This time there was a knock for an answer.
-Madame ; je vous ai dit que j’allais payer le loyer cet après-midi. Ça suffit maintenant!. – Another knock, harder this time.
She took a knife and moved to the door.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5070_zps4d6b3276.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5070_zps4d6b3276.jpg.html)

She opened it slightly. There was no one there, except…. She looked down and saw two parcels laying on the floor. Her first instinct was to take cover, then to look for some ticking noise but nevertheless she picked them up and put them on the bed.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5071_zpsc78a1c7c.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5071_zpsc78a1c7c.jpg.html)

The wrapping paper and the ribbons were too fancy to be a trap she thought innocently. She opened the first one and found the most beautiful dress she had ever seen.  In the other one there was gorgeous hat and a purse. She also found an envelope that she opened to find a letter and some money.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5072_zpse2669b38.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5072_zpse2669b38.jpg.html)

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5073_zps22ad8562.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5073_zps22ad8562.jpg.html)

“Miss Sillyn, I took the liberty of supplying these items for your visit to the Ritz this morning. I’m sorry but I must tell you I have been watching and you look dreadful my dear. Please follow these instructions, it is vital so no one suspects anything:
1)   Use this money to pay your landlady
2)   Dress normally and go to the Sacré Coeur in Montmartre.
3)   Take with you all that is precious to you. Your room might be searched by the police later.
4)   There is an interior Chapel being remodeled. Go in there, try not to be seen and change into the clothes I gave you. If someone stops you, tell them you are paying for that Chapel. They will understand
5)   At all times try to be discrete and not followed
6)   Come to the Ritz and pick up the envelope at the front desk
7)   Burn this note

Mrs. Van der Hess”

She read the letter thrice and still made no sense to her, specially instruction number 3.
Utterly confused she took a look at the room. There was not much she wanted to take with her, except for the picture of her mother; and her father’s pistol, which she kept hidden under a loose board on the floor.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5074_zpsf6b25bec.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/VC%20capitulo%204/DSCF5074_zpsf6b25bec.jpg.html)

She took those two beloved things and put them in the small parched suitcase she possessed, along with the dress and the hat still wrapped in silk paper. She left the room without looking back.

I finally took some time to read the whole story so far and I must say, it's extraordinary  :omg:

I agree with everyone: your storytelling abilities are fabulous. I loved the built-up suspense and it was a lot of fun to not have to wait for the next chapters and just keep on reading ;D Because of the setting and the lady from high society as a main character it reminds me of the novels by Isabel Allende.

I was sure the countess' dress from the first chapter was original PM, just because it looks so very elegant and 'real'. So excellent job on the custom pieces in this story  :hatoff:  That lantarn effect is genius! And the way they're holding the telephone

The backdrops you used are also perfect for the scenes! They really complete the look, like the sunset seen from the terrace (chapter 1) and the photo's of the hotel terrace (chapter 3). You've used beautiful lighting too. I'm amazed at how you were able to shoot those pictures in the semi-darkness. They look fabulous!  :)9

There are so many details I loved! For instance, the suits of armour guarding the exit doors from the hotel, the forest, the note in handwriting on the picture itself...

I'm really looking forward to the rest of the story and the mansion re-built and put back to its original splendour  :)
Will we see her husband or her child somewhere along the way?
Can't wait!

There is someting so British and so witty in your wonderful stories, dear Gaston

You have the perfect recipe with a touch of glamour, a zest of humour, a pinch of mystery to make it truly delightful in a subtle way !

I remembering reading the original story back in 2011 and having it back in 2013 makes me feel less guilty about having taken so long to come back with mine  ;)

Chapter 5

Penny Sillyn went down the stairs of the pension she lived in, trying not to be seen. She hid the suitcase somewhere in the back yard, and went back inside to pay the landlady.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%205/pension-web_zps48bd3c78.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%205/pension-web_zps48bd3c78.jpg.html)

She complained about the cold she had to suffer every night because the fireplace couldn’t be used and asked the lady again, to fix it, to reinforce the feeling that there was nothing out of the ordinary going on.
Then she took her suitcase back and walked through Montmartre and up to the Sacré Coeur.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%205/entradasacrecoure-web_zps572f4c83.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%205/entradasacrecoure-web_zps572f4c83.jpg.html)

She went into the church almost a trump and got out looking like a real lady. All had gone well and according to plan. Not knowing much why, she stopped, looked back at the huge white Basilica and whispered “thank you” into the wind, almost like a prayer, before heading to the Ritz.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%205/salidasacrecoure-web_zpsbc63a44a.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%205/salidasacrecoure-web_zpsbc63a44a.jpg.html)

The glamour of the famous Hotel shook her to the core. The instant she went in she felt small and poor, and for the first time since that morning she felt really nervous.  She walked slowly and scared to the front desk.

-Il y a une réservation à votre nom. Faite par votre tante. (There's a reservation under your name. Your aunt made it)
-Ma tante?? Oh ma tante!! Hahaha! Quelle folle!  (My aunt? oh my aunt! Hahah that crazy aunt of mine!)

She opened the envelope and read as fast as she could. “Follow the lead”, the note just read. Under it: a ticket to The Amazing Amazone to board the next morning.

-Oui! Je vais prendre cette chambre maintenant. (Yes, I shall take my room now)
-Très bien, Mademoiselle Sillyn. Vos bagages viennent d'arriver.(Good, your luggage have already arrived)
Mes bagages? (My luggage?)  –she asked herself.
-Merci, Monsieur.
He nodded and watched her go following the bellboy.

A while later as soon as he saw the Countess coming out of the dining room he approached her.
-Ma’am, your niece is already here. She had been shown to her room.
-Perfect! Thank you Monsieur LeCloche. She is my favorite niece, please see to her every need and put it in my bill.
-Or course Madame. Have a good night.

The journey to America took 13 days.  The first port they reached was Rio de Janeiro and three days later Montevideo.
From Montevideo’s port they took two carriages.  It was dusk and the road they took out of the harbor was not what Miss Sillyn had expected.

In the dim light of the carriage Miss Sillyn took a deep breath and questioned the Countess.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%205/puerto4-web_zpsa598ad0f.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%205/puerto4-web_zpsa598ad0f.jpg.html)

-   Mrs. Van der Hess . . . why aren’t we taking the main road?
-   I thought you saw all those journalists at the pier, miss Penny.
-   Yes I did ma’am.
-   They were there because of me –She said looking out of the window -  I played my part and let them ask me some questions, take me some photographs and I, then, let them think I’ll stay at the Hotel Presidente. I need them to direct their attention somewhere else, you see?  They must be following the other carriage to the Hotel right now. We are obviously going somewhere else.
-   Where?
-   Have you ever been in an airplane Miss Penny? – Asked the Countess with a smile.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%205/puerto5-web_zpsf8a54f2e.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%205/puerto5-web_zpsf8a54f2e.jpg.html)

The road was leading them to a private farm, two hours away from the city. There, two airplanes were waiting.

End of chapter 5.
Thanks a lot to Cowabounga (Arnaud) for helping me with the french dialogues.  ;D

You are a wonderful Story Teller

There is something so British and effortlessly elegant as if you had a Master in Agatha Christie Studies  ;)

I love the idea of the Sacré Coeur and the Reception area décor is straight out of a Hercule Poirot Movie !

And the carriage arriving by night with its lights is just so mysterious and captivating

Me too!  I also thought the basement and it's lighting were very well done.  Then I saw the clever photography of the church and the beautiful lobby of the hotel, excellent job Gaston.  All this is a vehicle for a very well told story.  Thank you so much.  I can't wait to see what happens next!

I was longing to find the time to read the chapter slowly and to enjoy the marvellous pictures.

Now I finally did!

Let me say, dear Gaston, I will print this story and bind it to a book, when it´s finished.

I want to have it in my bookshelf, too.

It´s so thrilling and at the same time so heartbreaking beautiful, I really LOVE IT!!!

The Hotel Lobby with the combined dollhouse and Sys. X walls and all the stunning interieur hooked me.
I want to book a stay there immediately.  ;)

Go on, my dear friend, go on!!!

Chapter 6

The moon was full and high when they got to the entrance of the farm where two men were posted. They opened and closed the gates for them without a word. Miss Syllin could see, a short distance away, the golden glow of a few lights close to what appeared to be a big and plain house; and she could distinguished, even in the dark, the unmistakable shapes of the planes nearby.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/1-web_zpse81d87e8.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/1-web_zpse81d87e8.jpg.html)

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/2-web_zps3e18070a.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/2-web_zps3e18070a.jpg.html)

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/3-web_zps9b9cf9f7.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/3-web_zps9b9cf9f7.jpg.html)

What she took for a house was actually a huge barn and she could see the planes, now that they were closer, clearly bathed by moonlight.  She couldn't see any kind of track that could be used by the planes to land and take off. It was a certainty now, that theirs would be a clandestine flight and she had doubts for the first time about what she was about to consent. The barn surely was really a hangar, and the farm… was it actually a farm? she wondered.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/4-web_zpsde22c0a5.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/4-web_zpsde22c0a5.jpg.html)

As they stepped down from the carriage, men started to rush by, getting the last minute chores done for a quick and smooth departure. Everything was happening fast.  No one ever said a word, not even the Countess, as if everything had been rehearsed.  The icy silence of the night was only warmed by the sound of footsteps and the low voice of the only man that was giving instructions.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/6-web_zps625585d6.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/6-web_zps625585d6.jpg.html)

At once the Countess told her they would be in different planes and asked her to follow the men and do what was asked of her. Miss Syllin was overwhelmed with questions and doubts but something in the eyes of the Countess made Penny trust her.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/8-web_zps03050eff.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/8-web_zps03050eff.jpg.html)

She did what she had, and followed the men to one of the planes. The plane was smaller than what she had thought it would be: there was enough room for just one pilot and one passenger.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/9-web_zpsac3f46eb.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/9-web_zpsac3f46eb.jpg.html)

Once she took her sit, she saw that the Countess had been taken to the other plane and was being helped inside by other men.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/11-web_zps167e573f.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/11-web_zps167e573f.jpg.html)

The explosion of the engines being started gave her a fright and took her out of her reverie, and before she could recover from the shock, the plane was moving quickly through the bumpy field.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/13-web_zps7b5142bf.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%206/13-web_zps7b5142bf.jpg.html)

All of a sudden the shaking from the road stopped, she felt a thrust upwards and then the strangest feeling she had ever had. It was like peace and silence translated into the purring of the engine and the wind outside.  Her world was suddenly changed, the horizon was not straight anymore and all she could see was black starry sky and the huge white orb of the moon.

Finally I've read your story, Gaston...  what can I say? I've read all the comments too and there's nothing left to say. Love the story, the pictures, the customs, the backdrops.. and I could go on for a while. Only in superlatives! A shame I didn't read it earlier. Penny Sillyn.. penicillin? Ha ha ha .

One word: Fantastic!

BTW, do you use photobucket or something to upload your pics/ text? The way you post it makes it much more readable instead of using attachments like I do. Also are the sizes of the pics perfect, I didn't have to do left- right scrolling. What is the size of the widest pic?

needless to say you've got another fan,

@Lynx: yes I use photobucket, it's a very straight forward webpage, easy to use and with good results. You can also edit your pics in that site, so it's very convenient. About the size of the pics I think they are 800px by 600px or similar, but not bigger (I don't have my notes here, sorry)

Chapter 7

Being airborne was an unforgettable experience for Penny. She tried to forget all of her fears about the path her life has taken and tried to subtract her own self from everything else to enjoy the ride. From her airborne bubble she could see the fields below touched here and there by the moonlight and the dark blue hand of darkness.  It was the strangest sight: a dark blue field of silvery lights in front and above, and a green- blue sea of land pierced by starry golden dots below.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7a_zpsf3575c45.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7a_zpsf3575c45.jpg.html)

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7b_zps951ff66c.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7b_zps951ff66c.jpg.html)

They landed hours later on the fields surrounding Hessenhall; half a mile away the big house barely glowed under the ghostly light of the hour before dawn.
There were no lights coming from the mansion, which seemed still empty and unfinished in the distance. Penny saw that there were more houses nearby, all in the same style, but rather smaller; also in darkness.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7c_zps55d81347.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7c_zps55d81347.jpg.html)

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7d_zpsd03722fb.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7d_zpsd03722fb.jpg.html)

A car was waiting for them. The driver greeted the Countess very ceremoniously but strangely enough, something made Penny  think of certain familiarity and confidence in that welcoming, as if that man had been in the Countess’ service for a  long time, or as if he knew her very well. The driver welcomed Penny and then helped her inside the car next to the Countess. After a few minutes’ drive the car passed by the main house and Penny could clearly see that the constructors' work still had to be finished. Mrs. van der Hess didn’t look surprised, as if she already knew. Afterwards she will remember this as the first time she noticed something odd about the Countess. Nevertheless then, it was just a weird feeling.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7f_zps6b9eff70.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7f_zps6b9eff70.jpg.html)

-I thought the house should have been finished by now. – Said Penny.
-It should have been, yes. I asked for a few last minute changes and additions and that had delayed the works of course. It will be finished shortly; in a couple of weeks or three maybe. – She added.
-Are you feeling all right Mrs. Van der Hess? - asked Penny after a moment. - You sound strange. Do you feel ill?
-Oh! No dear; do not worry. My body doesn’t agree with flying, that’s all. I feel a little dizzy and my ears and my nose clogged from going up and down in the air.  I’ll be fine.
The driver parked by the barracks that the workers used during the week. The buildings had been clearly reconditioned a little more elegantly for someone to stay. The door opened and a man in work clothes stepped out to welcome them.

-Welcome back Milady. – The man said with profound respect to the Countess as she and Penny descended the car.
-Thank you Stevens you look good.  I see you managed to put everything together, it seems nice.
-Yes, thank you Milady.  I still need to hire some of the permanent staff, but Mrs. Clarks and I will be interviewing candidates during the week. Everything else is ready.
-Stevens this is Miss Penny Sillyn.
-A pleasure Miss. – He said bowing.
- She will be helping me with the work, as you know. She said as they entered the barracks.

Penny, just then, realized she didn’t know what the Countess had meant by “the work”. So far she had been just the link between the Countess and her contact in the Police Station and thought she was there to make sure the meeting with Captain Brando took place. She didn’t even know why that meeting was so secret and important.
Penny imagined the Countess must have had a serious reason for that. She also thought the Countess maybe needed a secretary but Penny had had all along the suspicion that the Countess’ offering of taking her to Argentina hid something else.
Right now, Penny was sure that hers wouldn’t be a secretarial post. Nevertheless she felt grateful and loyal to Mrs. Van der Hess, though she wished she knew the truth.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7k_zps4573ac9b.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7k_zps4573ac9b.jpg.html)

As she had read her mind the Countess said.
-Penny, do take a sit, it’s time for you to know the whole truth.
-Stevens can you ask Lily to bring us some tea please?
-Right away Ma’am - He said and left.
Penny sat down and waited in silence for a few moments while the Countess took off her coat and hat. Lily entered with a tray bringing tea and biscuits for a light breakfast.
-Oh! Lily just as I expected. So efficient!

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7m_zpsaef02392.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7m_zpsaef02392.jpg.html)

-Welcome Milady. Miss Syllin. - She said bowing and Penny answered the same way. – I have asked for your favorite biscuits to be made. And here’s also your favorite tea with some honey, for your voice.
-Thank you very much Lily. It’s nice to be back.
Lily took the Countess’s coat and hat and left the room in silence.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7o_zps5bc45725.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7o_zps5bc45725.jpg.html)

The Countess filled a cup and handed it to Penny; then she filled one for herself. After sipping from it, she finally spoke.
-As you might have guessed Penny, we have entered the country illegally. Do not worry dear, you won’t be in trouble. – She stopped to think for a moment. - Let me go back a bit more and start from the beginning. My comeback to the country, a year ago, and my intention of getting back what was mine, have reignited in part of the upper class and the political “status quo” some of the fire that my ”departure” had turned to ashes. A lot of influential, rich and powerful men (I won’t name names for now) have been trying to clean up their past and get rid of evidence of their crimes and . . . activities since then. The thing is, Penny, that I am the richest of them all, although I absolutely lack power and influence . . . here. But that’s about to be changed. My friends in the old continent are a lot more powerful and influential than these . . . “men”, and it was not difficult for me to get informed . . . to say the least. That’s how I had the pleasure of meeting you. – She sipped a bit more tea.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7p_zpsdcbf2700.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7p_zpsdcbf2700.jpg.html)

-When I was here last year, I did more than just hiring an architect, but I won’t bore you with that now dear. At the time the invitation to stay at Regent st. as a guest of honor and all the publicity that the event would have had here and in Europe, was the perfect excuse to build up my cover story. You see? I wanted most people to think that I was just a rich, stiff and snob old lady who was interested only in ladylike things and activities, beside of course, “counting my money”. People seem to like that.
-I used my time in Europe wisely. I was in a couple of magazine covers, in news papers, I bought a Villa in Toscana and threw parties, I socialized, I did charity work, I showed myself in every social event you could think of, while “off stage” I used my influences to fit my plans here; London, Paris, Florence, Zirndorf, Madrid; all full of good and helpful friends.
Penny’s tea was getting cold. She was only drinking the Countess’ words, one by one.

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7q_zps26674c01.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7q_zps26674c01.jpg.html)

-You know this next part, Penny dear.  I will start pulling some strings with Captain Brando, thanks to you, but I needed some time in Argentina before that and I needed to get here under the deepest of secrets.  The farm where we were taken to in Uruguay, is mine, as well as the planes. Therefore, as I said at the beginning, we entered Argentine territory illegally though only people worth of my absolute trust knows it. Now: you must be thinking, and you won’t be mistaken, that someone might be watching me and following my moves. You must be wondering also, how I will “really” get into the country legally and publicly if I am already here – She paused to study Penny’s face.
–As you are aware of, another carriage left Motevideo’s port, a decoy carriage, with a decoy “Countess”.  I am staying at the Hotel Presidente in Montevideo right now and in two or three weeks time, I will enter back into Argentina as publicly and triumphant as I can (well, not really me).  I will be in all the papers and magazines and the people’s attention will be exactly where I want it to be: far from the truth. Now you know it all. – She finished.

Penny’s eyes were wide opened and her cup of tea was cold on her lap.
-Mrs. Van der Hess, that’s a lot of information for me to process. I’m shocked you confided all that in me as you barely know me.
-I trust you dear. – She said. After a while watching Penny’s wonderstruck face, she added. – I had you investigated dear, I am sorry.  I thought you had figured that out by now.
Penny had figured it out, but even so she felt violated.
-There’s something I still don’t understand – Penny said after thinking for a moment. –Why did you bring me here? Was it to work as your secretary? Or … is there something else?

(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/tonguello/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7r_zpsb462daba.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/tonguello/media/A%20Victorian%20Comeback/AVC%20capitulo%207/C7r_zpsb462daba.jpg.html)

-Oh dear, you almost had it right. You will have a secretarial post, of course . . . but you will not work for me, dearest Penny. You will work for Captain Brando.

hi guys!

I wanted to ask you if you can see the pictures all right or if they are too dark.
I see them perfectly in my laptop but I noticed today that in the monitor at the office they look super dark and none of the details are shown. I supose it is a monitor thing, but just in case I would like to know how you guys see them.

Thanks in advance!
