This week a bought 4732. It was only available since this month and I was itching to get my hands on it.
I was a little bit disappointed by the helmet. It is quite different from the classic conquistador helmet like this:
Otherwise a nice special. Like the stripy clothes. There was a packing error though, there were 3 gloves in it.
Are there going to be more of these, as there is already the 2 conquistadors in rowboat with treasure-set? Maybe some Inca of Aztek in the future?
-
This one is kind of meh, agree to what you said, it would be better if the helmet could improve and reflect the real one. So, now without the special helmet, this kilcky is not special enough IMO
-
Thanks for the review, Ali. Despite the reservations expressed about the helmet, I think it's a close approximation to the conquistador one and overall a nice figure. Looking at that conquistador helmet, I think it would be a difficult and, therefore, expensive item to produce and so is just uneconomical. I wonder, too, if there was more than one pattern of helmet used by the conquistadors - the fancy one used by the officers and a simpler version used by the common soldiers.
-
Thanks for the review Ali Baba - I haven't seen this one yet, but I don't think it is that exciting :-\

Hi,
Nice review of a nice special.
I agree with the point about the helmet: it does seem odd ,especially when Playmobil have now produced a helmet much more like the 'classic' morion:
30 28 1080 - Helmet, morion (Spanish) (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-28-1080)
or
30 29 6830 - Helmet, morion (Spanish) (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-29-6830)
But then perhaps playmofire is right: this special is a regular soldier, and the coxcomb morion was meant for officers. In any event, it should be possible to get the coxcomb morion from DS.
Also, the helmet this special wears (a 'cabasset') was fairly common in the 16th century, so from an historical perspective, it does still work.
Anyway, it's really good to see this guy close up -- thanks Ali! I knew I wanted to get several of this guy, and your review has definitely confirmed that!
Cheers,
AndrewL

Oh wow!!! Great review of another great klicky Ali!!! Thank you!!!
I am also waiting this from the same seller I got the mongolian warrior!!! So waiting for them both to arrive!!!
-
May be there were more helmes tipus in spanish army in this age.
More exemples from our mate halcon28 http://www.playclicks.com/playforos/index.php?topic=29192.0
-
Those are very impressive. I like the full length pikes.
-
Exactly, AndrewL! That is why I was expecting a more classic helmet for this special. They already have the mold for it! Strange choice.
Very nice work by Halcon28!!
-
At first look the helmet does seem a strange choice when they have a better Morion available. However the Conquistadors were more of a voluntary militia than an organised army, and they had to supply their own materials, weapons and horses. This suggests a lack of uniformity is quite acceptable, especially in the early settlers and explorers, so his armor and weapons are probably quite suitable.
I'm wondering how common red hair is in Spanish and Portuguese nations.
I like his striped arms and legs, and the use of a "big belly" swordbelt to go over his armor, they may have picked up that idea from various customisers on the internet.
I'll be getting several of these to add to my Spanish units, and hoping for some Incan and Aztec warriors, or better a full theme.
-
You know, this klicky could actually work as a viking or gaul!!!!
-
I'm wondering how common red hair is in Spanish and Portuguese nations.
Very stranger here in Spain, maybe brown hair is more realistic.
-
I'm wondering how common red hair is in Spanish and Portuguese nations.
according to some historians, Christopher Columbus was a redhead ....
-
And some say blond.
But descriptions of hair color are often culturally biased. For a lot of cultures blond was a name for any hair color other than black.
Native Americans would have called a large range of hair colors blond, especially in the 16th century.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.. a very interesting thought ..................Perhaps to make him Venzizetorix at the siege of Alesia !!!!!

yesw yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes :lens: :lens: :lens: :lens: :lens: :lens:
that would be interesting to see...
-
.. to maek this happen i estimate i need another 120 wooden steck walls etc etc , to build the inner and outer wall, what a genius Caesar was !!!!!!!!!
-
I looked at him and thought the same think Wolf Knight.
I really want to build a conquistador army as well!
But it will have to be after my Medieval army,
Japanese army,
Colonial English army, (which I am now making into a period army)
And another Medieval faction!
All before I can make a Conquistador army! 8}
-
So many armies, so little time!!!
I just received the conquistador special this morning! Very nice!!!
-
Thanks for the review, Ali Baba!
On the whole, this conquistador looks pretty good, although I would have given him the newer morion design and dark hair. If I didn't already have a company of these guys http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30%2000%204352 and a company of customized Englishmen to fight them, I would purchase a company of these new Specials. Maybe I will buy a company anyway. :-\
Regarding the three different morion types, all are appropriate. I used the newer style for my Spanish, the style that comes with this conquistador for my English, and the oldest style for my late Medieval period men at arms.
-
Thanks Justindo.
I just mentioned the morion because the other one looks more like the classic archetypical conquistador helmet.
-
An army of these conquistadores , some old type horses and 3449 cannons pulled by horses with the old western wagon thingies plus the jungle temples would make a fiiiiiiiine diorama ' ElDorado ' or " Aguirre'
Awesome, awesome, i want an army of 300 conquestas, but still to biuld a bigger roman and egyptian armies, bigger gauls army, more mediaval, redcoats and of course union versus confederate armies .. so many armies i want to build ...................... :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[
-
LOL
Good luck Giorginetto!
Justindo,
I once heard that the English used the Spanish Morion more then the Spanish did.
Whether it is true or not I am not 100% sure,
But it comes from a reliable source. :)
-
I wonder if the company is planning any Aztecs/Mayans/Incas or as another Spaniard for the Pirate Theme?
-
Wesley, the classic Maya period was long since passed when Cortes arrived. I would like Aztek and Inca playmobil very much!
Giorginetto: Cortes had only about 500 men with him. You might as wel go all the way.

Ali Baba, I don't know if Playmobil really cares about historical accuracy anymore - look at the Romans vs Egyptians, for instance (or Pirates vs Knights).

Yes, but he picked up more men eventually didn't he?
From the army that had come to arrest him. ???

That may be so, but we as collectors do care.
And even if they dont seem to,
Playmobil is still supposed to be an educational toy. :)
-
Wesley, I made that remark because you brought the subject of the Mayas up with regards to the conquistadors, not because playmobil did.

That right. I forgot that. His absence was the reason for la Noche Triste in Tenochtitlan, where he lost a lot of men. Do not know how much he gained from the taskforce that was sent to arrest him. So, to be accurate, he started out with 500 men.
About being historically correct: it is a toy so it is based on archetypes and clichés and there for often on widespread misconceptions. For instance: the vikings didn't have horns on their helmet, but everybody thinks they did. We have Wicky the Viking to thank for that.
I do not mind a bit of historical correctnes, but it doesn't have to be 100%.
-
I belive it was 1000. :hmm:
-
500 men apparently..

Ita nice klicky but not sure i want vast quantities of it .. hhhhmmm, for a conquestador army one needs a few 3449 cannons and lots of horses and some of the old type muskets ( 3586)
-

No, the person sent to oppose him had 1,100 men with him...
Cortez managed to convince many of them to join him.
So about 1000, because he killed a few in the battle between them.

Cool , he was a mean dude anyways, those conquestadors were not exactly saints.... quite the opposite actually

Not a huge number,
But a couple, like 10? (For me atleast.)
You could also use these: 30 06 3690 - Rifle, flintlock (musket) (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30%2006%203690)
Yes, lots of horses. ;D
Hmm.
Might be better Cav if you switched the arms for armored,
And the Helms for the Morions. :)
-

That can probably be agreed on... :o

Looking at this klicky again , he is growing into me i guess, do they have these in Greece Sir Wolf ???

Here is a very good and brief biography of Cortez and his exploits in the New World:

I think this article is quite biased. Seems he was quite a hero and the victim of bad press.
But this site is a catholic encyclopedia.

according to some historians, Christopher Columbus was a redhead ....
Had to read that one again, I first read redneck instead of redhead
Just bought my first 2 of this Conquistador special a few days ago. I like him, the striped clothes in particular.
But I also agree the morion-helmet would be much better suited for a Spanish Soldier from the late-15th or 16th century.
Though the helmet wouldn't be completely correct again, I believe this special resembles more an English soldier from the same era.
He could be f.e. one of Sir Francis Drake's soldiers, aboard the English (and/or Dutch-Flemish) vessels which were fighting off the Spanish Armada in 1588...
Soon this set will be released:
http://www.playmobil.de/on/demandware.store/Sites-BE-Site/nl_BE/Product-Show?pid=4893&cgid=Weihnachten
The clothing of the black guy is wonderful, he's just asking to be customized to a Spanish soldier! :)

The article is not biased. It states that he strangled his first wife, was a threat to the state, etc. If anything it is very unbiased because it merely reports the facts and does not give an opinion one way or the other. As history is supposed to.
Maybe for the simple fact that it is unbiased that we, who are used to the VERY biased thing that is called "news" today it is hard to accept something that does not present an overt opinion one way or another.
-

i don't think so these only are available to germany and here we have the old ones ??? ??? now that i see it again i like him , i woul'd by 20 of them if they come here

History is never unbiased. History is always colored by times and fashions of the day. It is constantly reinvented. For instance we describe the age of slavery totally different as compared to 50 years ago, and even then history was already a science.
Furthermore this site is catholic. Why would they make another encyclopedia? What is wrong with the others?
I have a deep suspicion for religions. All religions (do not be fooled by my avatar). Religions bring out the worst in people. The conquest of America is a good example of that. No offence and peace to you, it is just my opion.
Furthermore this article makes a lot of claims, stated of matter of factly, but unsubstanciated.
I quote: For the sake of policy, Cortés was, in general, far from cruel towards the Indians.
Compared to who and what? Atilla the hun was cruel. Today we would describe him as a genocist.
Please compare the article on wikipedia, which at least states different accounts and opions to compare for yourself.
Sure the aricle doesn't seem to give a lot of opionons, but that is only appearance. A lot is left out: the roll of the native peoples in the conqeust of Mexico, the effects of different European diseases and the social upheaval coming from that.
And there is this sentence: The execution of Cuauhtemotzin on the journey to Honduras was another instance
That is a very colored description of what happened. The word execution is a link to an article about executions. It explains about due legal proces and capital ponishment.
In fact this man was interogated (tortured, as was the practice that day) and then hung, all of it taking place while traveling through the jungle. Would you call that execution? Even his comtempories thought there was no evidence to find this man guilty of a plot to kill Cortes.
I started my earlier reply with "I think..." It was only my opion.

Sorry to interrupt this very interesting discussion, but I think I should draw everyone's attention to point 6 of the guidelines.

Oops. This is about my remark about religions, right? Do you want me to edit it out?

Innocent people can, and have, been executed. I'd call this an execution. They hanged him and they didn't have to.

Hello
Sorry to jump into this with out really reading everything but please tone it down people :wow:
This is about playmobil, the sets and what they are lacking or not, so please stay on track. There are plenty of other sites to argue about the specifics of historical figures or do it in PM's THanks

Well I also got one of these yesterday and I like it. Thanks for the review Ali Baba!
-
Hopefully it will be available in Canada next year.
What would be really sweet would be a Spanish Galleon!!!
Yeah, you could paint up a pirate ship and use that, but I would rather see a whole new design - one that more resembles a traditional image of a galleon with a higher aft.

I agree but I sadly believe this is the closest we will get to such one...
