I do for starters!! Girginetto does, and everybody else who wants to have troops to rival the pirates!!! Many collectors buy hundreds of them for dioramas too!

The British Redcoat is an iconic character of world history, right up there with the Roman Legionnaire.
The basic three-man set makes an easy-to-build army, with or without accessories (tents, artillery, etc). That is why they sell so well, and thus why they are still being made over a decade and a half later (I know it’s been at least this long, because one of my first sets was 3Ø54 Harbor Guard (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3054) back in ‘96 or so).

Funny - the last time I went to order some of these from the local Funpark, they told me they're out of production. Despite the fact that they feature in the latest Add-ons catalogue  ::)

Yes, my first inkling was they didn't sell and that's why they were still available.

Have the English soldiers from the Big Bertha set ever been on the add-ons catalogue? If not, why? Same goes for the red/yellow Spanish soldiers from the rowboat set. You have to keep buying 4295s to get them, unfortunately, and end up with more rowboats than you need  ::)

Hi

Yes if they were very unpopular and the old school stocking method that Gordon mentioned was still being used that would explain why there are always for sale. They just have way too many and need to push them. If they discounted them they loose 25% off the receipts. Perhaps enough get sold to collectors they just keep them at full price. They are also small storage items and will not take up too much room in the warehouse. Then when the stock finally dwindles we will just see them gone one day.

The redcoat captain is sold at 7 EURO here, which is outrageous.

But I really love his hat and feather decoration.

I dont think they are popular, but just have too many in the inventory. If playmobil produces the figures by judging their popularity, why arent the royal guard 4577 issued as add-ons? I guess with the upcoming new redcoat, they will start to be pulled off from the catalogue :o

I don't know if you misunderstood me, but what I said was that I was told that they are not available anymore - this was about three or four months ago. I don't think they had any reason to lie to me, because with the same order I placed, they DID get me the Romans I wanted. Though it seems that people around the world are still getting them without any problems.

Also, I don't think the figures from the add-on catalogue are actually stored in Malta, because it takes more than a month for the things to arrive, after you've placed the order.

Hi

No I thought I understood you correctly I am just shooting in the almost dark and theorizing why such an Add On is around for so many years.

I guess the next question is , Are the add ons figures made in Malta and then shipped to the various warehouses to be sold ? Then if so once the warehouses are saturated is the figure cut from production ?

Well ... I have another question, while we're at it: whatever happens to unsold stock? For example, I'm having trouble finding the last crusader special, the one with the golden legs (the funpark shop no longer stocks it). Is it because the whole lot was sold, or were they removed in order to clear the way for the new batch of specials? If it's the latter, where did they go?

I think it is still there because it has been succesfull. Many older DS sets which are still available often appear in the "special deal" section on the website or have a yellow circle around their price, indicating it is the last piece of stock.
This years DS catalog even featured a redcoat soldier on its cover. I would go out of my way and think it is the best selling DS set!

I want to buy 300 of these redcoats , they cover such an interesting time span for playmos , pirates, victorian, can be combined with steck cities etc . Really want to buy such a number. Add 30 or so western cannons and all 100 horsed redcoats and a lovely victorian army is built !!!!!

That's because they sell very well!

Taken separately, all the parts can be used for customising. Think of it: cuffs, shakos, high boots,"brêlage" (the white braces), rifle, , silver collar, bayonet, and feather! So many ways to use them all!
The only trouble is the shade of the coat that almost doesn't fit any other red part issued by Playmobil. Though, there's a sailor's jacket...

Well, now, I have a question: what are these figures supposed to be? They're sold at the pirates' page in the DS catalogue but by their look I'd say they're the Marine Infantry, aren't they?

Cheers.

they were realesed with the pirate theme as this set : http://www.gardenwargaming.com/armies/playmo1900/Images/3054guards.JPG  so the would go with the clipper ship 3740 also they were again realesed in this set http://www.collectobil.com/images/items/3857.jpg  to go together with 3859 prison http://www.collectobil.com/catalogue/items/3859.htm so the pirates will have someone to fight with you see  ;)

Here's a British Royal Marine from 1815 - not exactly right but not a bad match for the Playmobil figure.

Nice find, Martin.

I've always thought they were early 19th century British Marines meant to fight the pirates.  I'm using them with tricornes as mid to late 18th century British Infantry, but the coat style isn't really right for the time period.  I also wish they were a more vibrant red, but I guess their tunics have faded.  I'll probably replace mine with a modified version of the new blister pack redcoat.

Playmobil needs to make a 2 klicky blister with a redcoat and exacntly the same klicky with blue colours and a different insignia. So simple it would sell so much as this would make the basis for building opposing napoleonic era times armies !!!! Someone tell playmobil !!!!!

That's a great idea, Giorginetto!  I'd like to see the upcoming blister pack redcoat with a rifle and bayonet instead of his sword and one of the older blue and red French soldiers with a rifle and bayonet as a blister pack.  I think both collectors and boys would buy them like mad!

As Arnaud says: These redcoats are so successful for being the most useful spare part treasure trove ever being sold by geobra!

I nearly never use a redcoat as a redcoat. Every single redcoat gets disassembled as soon as being unpacked. And every single part and accessory will be instantly used for several different customizing purposes. There will be no useless remnants at all.

This is something no other set known to me can claim to accomplish. So this is the secret of the redcoats success.  :)

Need to to some Googling for yourself Georginetto!

However...

The Victorian Era started in 1837 and ended in 1901. During her reign many foreign wars were fought but on home soil it was a time of peace and prosperity (if you were in the right stratum of society). The Redcoat was still the standard uniform for most of this period, being replaced by khaki only by the Second Boer War, after experiences during the wars in Egypt and Sudan in the early 1880s showed that camoflage was useful.

When the Redcoat was worn the trousers (pants) were often black or blue, with a red or gold stripe down the side, so the uniform was closer to the 4577 Royal Guard than the Redcoat we are discussing with white trousers and black boots.

It's a huge subject, I recommend you do some research both on the internet and in your local library!

Yeap, very interesting indeed !!!! I remember seeing many types and variations of redcoats in the war museum in endinborough, scotland , never forget the hadwritten note there of the british soldier that fought its way and captured the emperor's flag at the battle of waterloo, a painting of tha era was adjacent to his hand written description along side the emperor's colours  which are still there ( well  i am a bit surprised they werent returned to france , isuppose the fall under the category ' winner takes it all'  ;D ;D ;D ;D), well worth visiting that museum for that and for that only !!!!!

i want to buy these redcoats even more now !!!!!
