Title: Greetings from the UK!
Post by: drbatesy on May 14, 2021, 11:35:27
Hi, my name is Steve and I and my five year old daughter are big fans of Playmobil. She has a broad collection, though most recently she has developed a serious love for the pirates theme! My collection is smaller and focuses on early modern history. Both are growing!

I'm not a 'modder' but I do like to supplement the sets. I hope that my experience in this area will be useful to other playmofriends.

We have started a blog, earlymodernplaymobil.wordpress.com, with the intention of posting weekly reviews and occasional articles. I would be really grateful for any constructive feedback and suggestions, both on content but also the use of of Wordpress and Twitter if anyone is very familiar with them!

Looking forward to 'meeting' you all!

Steve.

Thank you all for your welcome messages and especially thankyou to Flatcat and Macruran for your encouragement!

Tahra, I have enjoyed browsing your reviews on Playkingdoms. It's nice to 'meet' you in person!

Graham, I'm in Solihull (what we Shakespeare fans like to think of the Forest of Arden!)

Steve.

Hi drbatesy  from a recent member in the U.S.!

My favorite aspect of Playmobil has always been the historical-themed nature of many of the sets, which one doesn't find much in other toys.

You have some really great images on your blog, very crisp and clean captures! I am definitely looking forward to seeing more!

Thank you for your encouragement Clicky Ghost. The photographs are produced with rather amateurish tools so I'm glad they're coming out OK. I probably need to invest in a lightbox.

Buongiorno PlaymoCollector! It's great to be connecting with so many international fans of Playmobil!

Steve.

Hi Steve

Welcome to Playmofriends! I am very happy that you have decided to join. I hope you will like it here.

Like you I'm quite into historical PM, in line with my broader interests. My collection is way too big ā€“ I am working on that, but it is hard going ā€“ Buying is like making love, selling is like giving birth, to parody a Babylonian saying!

Best wishes from Munich
StJohn

What is the original Babylonian saying? (BABY-lonian, just noticed that  :D)

What is the original Babylonian saying?

The saying is quoted in the remarkable Dialogue of Pessimism:

Quote
Making loans is as sweet as making love, but getting them back is like having children!

according to one online translation (https://www.gatewaystobabylon.com/myths/texts/classic/dialoguepessimism.html).

Making loans is as sweet as making love, but getting them back is like having children!

At first I thought the second part might not have been intended as negative, but I read it in context and the line immediately after clarifies the meaning:

Quote
They will take away your capital, cursing you without cease. They will make you lose the interest on the capital!

  those Babylonians!

Making loans to my (adult) children has been easy, if not sweet. Getting them to accept they were loans not gifts- forget it, they've lost interest in paying back!

You need to tell them "It's the principal of the thing!"

Welcome to PF!  :welcome:

Apparently, I'm late to the party. We've already gotten to the Babylonians.

Hello and welcome! As someone else mentioned, the photos available on your blog are very crisp and clean indeed (Definitely something Iā€™m trying to learn more about). Excited to see more for sure.

Thank you Ismene! It's nice to meet people from across the pond!

Hi Brian, thank you for your encouragement. They come out surprisingly well given the amateurish process I'm using, which probably says more about the advance of technology than my photography skills! I've just been using a sheet and the camera on my (really quite inexpensive) smartphone. I then cut the image from the photograph using the 'Smart Select' function in Microsoft Paint 3D and paste them onto a white background in Paint. The images are then set to a standard size (500*500 pixels) and saved as .png files. I'm going to buy a pop-up photography light box to make the process slightly more professional!  ;D
