5th Wheel Dolly
« on: June 26, 2010, 11:37:11 »
Hello

Here is my 5th wheel dolly that I have made.

5th wheel dollies allow a trailer that would usually be pulled by an articulated truck, to be pulled with a regular style tow hitch.

It is a very easy custom, as the chassis, drawbar and wheels all come from the mobile crane, and a 5th wheel is added from one of the artic trucks.

The 5th wheel has to be sanded down width ways to fit between the wheels, and then on the bottom, to provide a flat surface so that it can be glued on with strong plastics glue.

A real one:

Here it is in use with a tractor and bale trailer:

Real life bale trailer with a fith wheel dolly:

It has many uses:

Thanks for looking,
Damo :)

Great work, Damo!  Another very neat, workmanlike job.

¡Just tie a cord to the tractor, drag it through a few mud puddles, and you’re good to go!
Serously, though, VERY clever. ;D
If I’m jealous, you did SOMETHING right. Keep it up. :D

Your work keeps amazing me Damo. And like Baden, I am really hoping that you would share some of your trade secrets. It seems like you have a lot of experience with customizing but some of us are rather new at it, so we could use some tutorials :)

Thanks for sharing.

Trade secrets?

I don't really have any,  I just take a close look at the world around me

I just dismantle, cut, glue, and sand until I get something that I am happy with wherever my imagination takes me :)
