Title: Driveway Layout
Post by: batrugger on February 22, 2023, 16:58:15
So here's a quick layout I setup on the driveway to help me learn how the track works and to see how much track I have accumulated since I started buying pieces in 94. Once it was up I wanted to see a train rolling so here’s the video of my 4050 diesel engine pulling 11 cars. All the cars have metal wheels and ballast weights and this is probably right at the limit for this engine since it needed a little help to get rolling. Because it’s a driveway, there is a slight grade so it struggles when it goes to the left and accelerates when it goes to the right.

Looks like a good start! And a wee diesel hauling 11 waggons - nothing to fuss about I dare say! Pure brillant!

Maybe 16 feet by 10 feet, possibly narrower.

just put a tape on it. It is 15x4.5 ft.

Ah, so the big difference between the apparent diameter of the nearer end loops and the further ones is perspective and not that you have R2 and R3 curves at one end and R1 and R2 at the other - both ends are inner curve R1 and outer curve R2.  But that means that the width must be something like 5 feet 3 inches.

Counting the sleepers it should be R1 and R2 and nine 30cm straights each at the long sides. That's 1.6m x 4.3m or 5.1ft x 14 ft - in theory. But when looking closely you'll see some tracks aren't layed out properly. Inner and outer curve should end parallel (as they do on the right side - but not on the left). So the layout is slightly lopsided which might be the reason for different figures.

Thanks for that, jj, and your eagle eyes.  The clarification is much appreciated.

Yeah the track has been shifted a little bit and I didn't use connectors, because I'm trying to work out the isolators and power. The day after the video when I took the pic, we had a day of high winds with 80 mph gusts, rain, and snow plus the three big dogs I have that hang out back there. This has been going on for 3 days now so this track is experiencing it all. I took the measurements last night in the dark so I'm sure its moved a bit. Here's a part list for you. All the track is LGB except for the 2 Aristocraft switches on the left and 4 straight pieces in the middle

Spectacled eagle, Playmofire, only spectacled as I'm getting older .

Wind and snow shouldn't cause trouble to the tracks. I put my bets on the dogs...  8-).

Ah, I have been "spectacled" since about seven years of age, so it was very strange for me January last year when after my first cataract operation I found I did not need to wear spectacles except for reading, and those 3.5 dioptre off the shelf at the pharmacy.  It was better still when the other (worse) eye was operated on a few weeks later, although I still wear glasses now but to a much lower prescription and only so as to fine tune the weaker eye to work better and for reading.

That's a great layout. 11 is a lot for one motor. I feel like about 6 is the max I want to pull without adding a second motor.

That's good news, Gordon. Poor eyesight is a real burden and makes it hard to enjoy many things. I'm short-sighted, which is great for close-up work (I have discarded my specs to type this on a tablet, for example) but rubbish for seeing detail at distance - even with specs!

Too true, Graham.  For me the world is quite literally a brighter place after the op.

Yes sir, that little engine was struggling and I don’t want to strip the gears. I believe your right about 6 cars, maybe 7 will be okay. Once it stops snowing here, I’m going to add some more track and then use connectors to make it all more stable. I’ll put up a design and parts list too.

(https://abload.de/img/westerncreut.jpg) (https://youtu.be/v-1o0n1v1-g)
Clip (click to watch) showing my "record-train" pulling 12 waggons (the long ones counting as two as they're running on twin bogies) and pushing a Steaming Mary - allouwdly there are two engines running to get the train over a 2-3% gradient.

Great layout, super compact with lots of options and sidings

But I noticed your concrete density is a bit off, looks like 5000 psi and not the typical 6000psi mix for driveways . Your 1/2 aggregate is best to be updated to the 3/4 version. Also your crack weeds needs a bit of attention . Is that a 1.5 ton aluminum  floor Jack ?  :P ::)

Loved the video , that  diesel sure is “the little engine that could”

Thanks, I've expanded it a little more and added another siding.

Lol, the concrete is a disaster waiting to happen, the jack is 1.5 ton harbor freight jack, and I'll get right on those weeds.

Here's the design I finally came up with. It is more direct and simpler to get the trains onto all the sidings. I also really wanted to use my two level crossings so I pushed out the track at the end. A large custom freight dock will be on the left and a large custom station will be on the right. The MAN crane will be on the spur at the top.

The supervisor is Marcus and he’s a 130 pound Husky/German Shepard mix. He’s a gentle giant. You can see Luna, an Aussie Cow Dog, in the background.

Very nice lay out , you fit in so much in a small area

Looking forward to the addition of buildings, vehicles, running stock, klickies, etc……..

Old school Rabbit , nice , wish I still had the GTI I killed

Looks more like a freight dog what I percieve at the left  8}

Schicker Gleisplan!

Nice layout! Loads of shunting fun to be expected! If possible (I don't knwo how far your driveway still extends to the right) you might want to consider an eight-shaped layout instead of a double circle: Station in the middle, one circle then heading left, the other right. That would make it look much more interesting. Looking forward to seeing some rolling stock...

They are so beautiful

Thank you!

I suppose they are not overly interested in playmotrains? When I first got the nostalgie (I only have RC ones) our cat sat in the loop looking, but I guess the scale is too large to really be very attractive... if it was smaller it would probably be pounced on...

Coming along nicely and two great looking dogs, too.

The "wriggle" factor that you get with a crossover joining two ovals adds greatly to viewers' interest and also adds interest because the two ovals are offset.  In one you can have town and the other country and sea.
