Title: 4752 Celtic Warrior
Post by: Wolf Knight on September 19, 2011, 08:03:44
Hey folks, here's a new Special!!!

Another great special from Playmobil!!! And a good use of parts for customisation!!! Although I dont think these eybrows suit him  :-\

The only thing that I did not like much is the red colour of the shield,

the older produced shield in the Gaul warriors set was brown, and much better colour, me thinks!!!

Enjoy!!!

Thanks for the review Sire !!! Actually he is a very good looking klicky and will make a fine addition ( a 'few' of them ) to my gaul / viking army. I agree the red shiled is inferior to the brown one, at least they have a similar print / design

i assume this is available at the funpark, i cant believe i was there this weekend i bought all this stuff and didnt buy any of these !!!!

ALSO i want to make an important point. The DS gauls set with the three warriors was presented as GAULS . HOWEVER this special has a similar if not identical design and shield print but there is a drakkar in the background. Perhaps this and the gauls klickies were meant to be vikings from the start ????  :) :) :)

It's a bit boring if you ask me. And I'm not crazy about those blue boots. Give him a guitar and he looks like something out of an 80s heavy metal band from Germany.

The barbarian chief from last year was boring too ... and blue. What's the story with barbarians and the colour blue?

 ::) ::) ::)

Having missed the gauls/celts/whatever they are, I'm getting a couple of him.

:hmm: I think I'll agree with the colours Bolingbroke, Playmobil was never good at using colours... Then again, I dont expect to find historical accuracy or reality based depictions in playmobil ,even though they did some really nice work on other themes... think of him as a fantasy barbarian

The problem between Viking, Purple Barbarians, Gauls and now this ''celtic'' warrior, is that colours and designs overlap. Since I cannot keep a single klicky the way it was introduced in its original state and need to swap parts, and in most cases uniform everything, but not for these guys, I have a really hard time customising them... I mean how many vikings, gauls, barbarians can have a big belly and the same boots and torso markings  ::)

George, I bought this from a german ebay seller. It wont be available until next year in Greece...

A good point about the belly and boots sir !!!   I wish i had the time to make such customs etc ,

Next year ... awwww.. i was hoping i missed this klicky at the funpark on saturday's haul .. aw well....

The three DS gauls were very nice ... as was the gaul chief. But this one - like many other recent specials - looks cobbled together, unfortunately  :-\ :-\ :-\

I'm not expecting historical accuracy either ... but some semblance of accuracy would be nice. Imagine if they started giving us Indians in pink and bright green costumes for eg, instead of the tan and brown parts they give them now. I still bought a couple of this one, mind you.

He looks quite impressive to me and, if he were my theme, I'd certainly buy him and probably multiples to re-use parts with other figures.

That fur cloak looks very good and his hair style is new to me and his beard has new details I think, for example, the curve of the moustache.

As for colours, who knows what colours the Gauls, Celts etc had?  Maybe Playmobil has done some research on this.  Certainly, accepted ideas about the levels of culture in pre-Roman times amongst what the Romans called the barbarians are having to be revised in the light of new archaeological finds.  In early socities, colour meant high status, so why not blue boots?

Mmm. Im still not convinced. I dont even mind COLOURS too much - the 90s knights are a colourful bunch but they still look really nice. Or maybe it's the usual thing - something ... anything ... must first acquire a patina of sorts before it starts looking good: you can see this everywhere: music, films, fashion, vintage PM.  ::)

I guess PM could start adding variety to their sets by giving us little things. For eg - how come they never made a sword belt for fat klickies? Im sure they would have been great, and a godsend for customisers.

They did make a sword belt for fat klickies... but only one...

Its a clip-on belt fthat can be found on 30 13 1010 - Barbarian, black/magenta clothes, scale mail, brown beard (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-13-1010) They could do it in other klickes, even if it is a clip-on...

Ah. Didn't know that. Very very interesting.

What is also interesting is that the past couple of years have seen PM experimenting with their sword belts (and failing most of the time). First they gave us these unwieldy clip-on things that keep falling off. Then they tried fastening scabbards to the side of the clicky - where modern policemen pistols usually go (and it doesn't make sense unless the knights are left-handed).

I haven't bought any of the new pirates yet, but I am curious to know how the new rapier fits into the old belts.

It is lacking cool design.....very boring, but I might call it a safe design...

80% of the specials released in recent years are mind-numbingly boring (if not downright ugly).

Among the most pedestrian and forgettable examples:

And I'm only sticking to the themes I'm interested in, here.

I could go on posting pictures of utterly redundant specials but I dont want to waste the forum's bandwith. Koko the gorilla could have come up with better stuff. I wonder if the guys who design these specials ever come in here.  ::)

Good thing we can customise them  ;D All these specials have so many useful parts, to mix and match with other parts. So i think, if on this ''celtic'' warrior, we change hair, give him a helmet, and change arms and if we had one of those swordbelts that fit a fat klicky pieinted in blue, i think we could have a winner...

But being a chubby is not that great.... if you want to make an army out of this one... you'll get a very overweight bunch of guys.

Well, is some societies the one with the biggest belly is the leader

You mean like the klicky in the far right? I fits like all rapiers, alhough it does not look very nice...  :-\

Just as I thought.

Mind you - just in case people think I'm some sort of Jeremiah - let me assure you it's not the case. The English soldiers of the new pirate themes are really really pretty for eg. Maybe - I don't know, different designers work on different sets and it could be that the knights designers are a particularly untalented bunch?

I see your point re customisation, WK but for me it shouldn't be the yardstick with which to measure a klicky. As for WOT liking the last too ...  ;D you're not saying it to rile me are you?

THe 'knight' in particular, with his Roman shield and his Spanish helmet ... where's the pukey emoticon?
Title: Re: 4752 Celtic Warrior
Post by: WarriorOfToys on September 20, 2011, 13:17:44
The Morion helmet is weird on that klicky...
but, if you replace it with a Roman helmet, then it becomes a good Roman figure. :yup:
As for the archer, sure, the stripes on his clothes are... interesting.
But I envision them as patches, ;)
Since medieval peasants would have patched their clothes before sewing a whole new tunic. :)

I would say it is 70%
Apart from the design, use of parts...the colour schemes are always BAD
The archer could have looked way better, but with those colour out from the rainbow, he just looks boring. The green older one just WIN!!!

I don't know. I have mixed feelings about that. The archers from the old 3889 were a very colourful bunch for eg, but they're still very nice figures don't you think?

Having said that I would really like to see PM use more 'drab' colours for their medieval themes, like brown and so on.
Title: Re: 4752 Celtic Warrior

Too colourful for me...still.
I like the green special the best :-\
Using brown and other realistic colour really could stir up the whole thing and yield better balance IMHO

Brown, tan and black (maybe some green) should be the basis for most of these medieval klickies from a historical standpoint.

Independent of colors, the pot-belly kills that klicky for me.
Title: Re: 4752 Celtic Warrior
Post by: Bolingbroke on September 20, 2011, 15:24:50
Why? I don't mind it.

I would have liked to have had some fat Romans - plenty of them in Asterix. And maybe a fat emperor.

And I still want fat women klickies! Par condicio  ::) ::) ::)

well...if you see my customs you'll know I like browns, greens and dark colors, but this is a toy for KIDS... Kids won't get the brown lady or worrior... they'll go for bright colors. that's what gets their attention.  :-\
Title: Re: 4752 Celtic Warrior
Post by: PrimusPilus on September 20, 2011, 15:43:58
Why? I don't mind it.

In terms of variety the pot-bellies are welcome, of course, but not in numbers. So if you had the option of choosing between lean and pot-belly klickies I wouldn't mind a few fatsos (10% of your army/squad/force?), but not only pot-bellies. Besides, rare is the accessory that will fit because of that belly.

...but this is a toy for KIDS... Kids won't get the brown lady or worrior...

And if Geobra wants to sell to kids they better not forget that.
Bummer for us of course.

Problem with that archer, the torso is also used for a viking  ::) 30 00 9660 - Viking, long straight beard, chainmail hair (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30%2000%209660)
So my problem is why use the same torso in another theme  ::) ::) ::)

Luciano, no worries about the fat klickies, you can still get a huge lot of them for their accessories and use only 5% of them  :P I have lots of big belly torsos and legs laying around  ;D As i said before, I see specials as an extra resource for accessories and parts  ;D ;D

Like the celtic warrior too, especially his long hair. 8-) Makes him look like a tough celtic warrior!

Enjoy!!!

Besides the color, the print is somewhat different. Maybe a difference in a the shield from an irish celt and a "french" celt (=Gaul)  :)

I second Bolingbroke, here. I don't like this Special. I didn't like it when I saw the preview, and that was before Panos mentioned the red shield. They could have at least given him a blue belt like the Barbarian has. With these big belly clickies it always felt like they had grown so fat they couldn't find a belt their size!  :hmm:
At least, the body and boots colors match the double axe Knight: Panos, you can now make an ageing Sir Baldthar!  ;D ;D ;D
I agree it's a good thing the guy has angry eyebrows, otherwise you could think he's a fat Jon Bon Jovi custom! 8} 8}

I think all of us here love Jon  ;D so, no its not an insult, but you can only wonder what would Jon look like in in 30 years time (he is 50 now right?) although judging by his frame I doubt he will ever look like a fat klicky... Its rather the hair that give the celtic warrior a Bon Jovi look, and thats a compliment i think.

Sorry Panos and Tahra, I second George here! I don't like Bon Jovi at all either! BUT! I never meant the comparison as an insult! As Panos pointed out, it's the hair that's very Bon Jovi like. I mean, this guy spends more on his hair than on guitars, doesn't he?  Sory, I couldn't help!

BTW, the best band in the world is The Cure, everybody knows that...

I have an army of fatty  warriors sire .. there are the red bearded barons mounted on the latest dark metal armourede horses i have created - 45 of them and they are in the centre of Krulls's barracks .. all fatty ones      however they are most heavily armoured them and horses and are therefore a super detachment for a fast assault unit against archers etc etc  :) :)

Very nice! :wow:
The original is a little boring, your custom adds a lot of life to him!
Very cool, I would buy a troop of your customs.

Unlikely, I have not hear of vikings who wore brigandine.
However it is possible that a viking
after having gone on a raid in a distant country like the middle east
could come home with a new set of brigandine.

But even that doesn't work
since the brigandine would have been leather plates as opposed to steel.

However, I would accept him as either a late period viking, or an early period Dane.
(Let's say, from the early 1100s.)  :)

I love this clicky and I love the hair

But being a chubby is not that great.... if you want to make an army out of this one... you'll get a very overweight bunch of guys.

33% of my Black lion guards are overweights !!!  ..  no surprise my steck walls are a bit bend  :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

Thanks for the review and pictures, Panos. :)

I must say that when I placed a recent Playmobil USA order, I did not bother to purchase this Special, although I did purchase the new pirate Special.  The new pirate, like this Special, is rather boring, but he has a new torso and I can always use another pirate.  This Special, while not offensive, is nothing new and, in my mind, inferior to the previous version of this Special which had the same fur cloak but had more interesting arms and an interesting horned helmet (although I'm not using it).  I do like his hair okay.

I just really wish Playmobil would do something new and useful for their Specials like an ancient Greek Hoplite or a late 19th century British infantryman with a white sun helmet.  Most of the Specials that come out are "been there done that" and of use only for parts.
