I'm no expert with rifles...what is the (new?) shorter rifle supposed to be? (I like to check on its earliest year of use in case its post-ACW and meaning I can only use them for my Indian Wars) :)

I loved these photos - thank you for posting them!  Is it bad that the first thought I had was looking at the guy on the left and thinking 'those braces would be great for a customised white-shirted 1940's guy'  ;D

In answer to Justindo's comment about red trim and chevrons, perhaps they are just very mobile artillery troops?  (I'm imagining them galloping up, towing their cannon... um... no...maybe not!)

The short long-gun looks to be a percussion coach gun or, in the parlance of our times, a sawed-off double-barreled shotgun.  This type of shotgun would have been used during the Civil War, especially by Southern cavalry, and in the American West, especially to protect stagecoaches and in towns by Sheriffs.  It's a nice addition and I will be using them for my Western theme.

I know I will be ordering many of these for our western dioramas and using them just as you explained. Finally a 4th gun that fits in.

No, sorry, but in my rifles box there were two sizes... we had to look about to give troopers matching ones...
