Title: LKWs
Post by: VicKlicktor on January 24, 2016, 19:12:43

LKW – Lastkraftwagen (Truck/Lorry). I will photo-review the Playmobil cargo transport vehicles in this thread. I like these trucks and containers because they are 100% compatible with the train theme and they look like the real ones:

There are 4 versions so far, 3 using the old style mold and one new.

I will start with the newest one, Add-on 6437:

Thank you for the pics..

Not sure why they made that last one with the colors all messed up... I was wondering if it was the cat pic that was bad, but apparently not...

I do like the others though... I believe I only have the first one..

Thanks for the look at these. I don't have any but the recent one at least really looks like the trucks the company uses in Germany.

Thanks for the review.  I like the way that Playmobil have always updated their range to take account of changes in the real world, whether it's changes in design or simply (as with some of the early fire engines) simply changes in the livery.

Thanks for the review. I didn't realize there were so many of these released over the years.

Following the review, some more photos of first set 4068, released in 2004 as an exclusive set for German store Vedes. I always wondered if the truck and container have those "Happy Birthday" signs related to the Playmobil 30th anniversary (1974-2004)

(http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q564/BiktopP/LKWs/DSC04450_zpsmarn5ojv.jpg) (http://s1164.photobucket.com/user/BiktopP/media/LKWs/DSC04450_zpsmarn5ojv.jpg.html)

(http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q564/BiktopP/LKWs/DSC04419_zps6qiuqisu.jpg) (http://s1164.photobucket.com/user/BiktopP/media/LKWs/DSC04419_zps6qiuqisu.jpg.html)

The nose of the truck is flat and the cab sits on top of the diesel engine as usual in European style. I think Playmobil owns us a long nose truck for easy access to the engine like many in the US.

(http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q564/BiktopP/LKWs/DSC04486_zpsuu9zafsw.jpg) (http://s1164.photobucket.com/user/BiktopP/media/LKWs/DSC04486_zpsuu9zafsw.jpg.html)

The container has a nice combination of blue tones. Later versions were different.

(http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q564/BiktopP/LKWs/DSC04488_zpseeh6thmt.jpg) (http://s1164.photobucket.com/user/BiktopP/media/LKWs/DSC04488_zpseeh6thmt.jpg.html)

The set has only one figure and no many accessories. Later versions came with few more little boxes. In any case much more should have been included.

How to forget set 3817. Released in 1995, the Sunset Express is already a classic. Color combination and stickers were very successful and accepted among collectors.

In 2000 Playmobil released set 3935, a heavy duty flatbed truck with flashing light on the cabin roof.

None of the old type trucks is compatible with the RC module but I like them anyway. This set came with tool box, extinguisher, warning sign, shovel, broom, vehicle stop mounts, elastic strings and hooks to hold the load.

We know the standard for license plates in Playmobil cars is “PM yy ssss” (where yy are the two last digits of the release year and ssss is the set number). I think the right license plate for this set should be PM 00 3935 but it came with a 20. Did the Y2K problem cause a mistake in the license plate of this set?

Racing truck in set 3613 is one of the oldest in this photo-review. It was released in 1994.

It has no many accessories but several small stickers give the truck a real appearance of a racing vehicle, besides the cabin roof, the protection networks in the windows and some modifications in the chassis.

One of the longest-lived sets in the history of Playmobil is the large dump truck in set 3141. Produced from 1986 to 2003. Over 17 years in the market!!! Even more, molds for almost all pieces of truck and trailer have been in use during 30 years, considering the sets presented in this photo-review. I think none of the models look too old.

There are two box versions for this set. Mine is from 2001 according to the mini catalogue inside. I just unpacked the box and assembled the toy. Set comes with enough accessories to play and two klickies, unusual in truck sets today.

Just to close this photo-review for now, I add the set 4323, truck and semi-trailer. Actually, same modern molds used in the very first set showed in this thread (6437) but using different colors.
Set 4323 was released in 2007 and it is compatible with RC.

I will update this thread with few additional sets. First one, 9314 Big Rig, released in 2018. I always dreamed of a North American style tractor unit with engine and hood in front of the cab (as seen before, previous units were flat nose cab over engine or European style). Playmobil used the same cab and chassis of Chinese truck series adding the sleeper compartment. The final product is cool and looks modern although it has some cons: main one, quality is typical of Chinese series and some small details like there is no access to the sleeper compartment from the cab, only from outdoor. Also, everything is pre-assembled and packed inside a second small box besides the main one.

Thank you for the detailed review..

I really want that truck.. and now I would love an extra container too - seems much better for stickers, and I do love the color.

Still hope it makes its way to this side of the pond... I don't want to deal with those... people... from customs.

A new version for the EuroTrans truck 4323 of 2007 was released in the second half of 2017 with an alternate color combination and without trailer. To date, this set 9370 is still on exclusive sale in the German hypermarket chain Real (although it was also available in the French PM site for a while). The features of both trucks are essentially the same.

In 2013, as the set 5467 main element, Playmobil introduced an all-new tractor unit compatible with RC module. Simple but elegant, it resembles the two axle Mercedes Actros.  A small sleeper compartment is integrated to the cabin. Besides semi-trailer and load, this set just includes one clicky, radio unit and facial tissue box. No tools, signal lights, fire extinguisher, wheel chocks, caution stickers for rear ramps, additional compartments or any other accessory.

It is a plus that the truss section can be use to extend tower crane in set 5466.

Comparison: Shorter than the three axle classical version, the cabin first time ever does have side mirrors! Silly omission before since Geobra never included them in previous versions of heavy duty trucks. The lowboy (low load semi-trailer) has three axles and it is longer that its predecessor. It comes with two short elastic strings to hold the load.
It's a pity that Geobra did not make semi-trailers compatible. The new version has the fifth-wheel (turntable) integrated to the chassis and it is fixed. Also, the new trailer kingpin is wider. So, the old lowboy kingpin is loose in the new tractor unit fifth-wheel and the new lowboy kingpin does not fit into the old fifth-wheel hole.

To me it doesn’t look right. The tractor has only one rear axle but the trailer has three axles. To me a three axle trailer signifies the ability to haul very heavy loads but then the tractor only has one rear axle signifying the ability to haul lighter loads .

I do like how the tower crane is now extendable

Toys R Us clearance in Germany last year offered set 5026 from 2012 at a very good price. It's a different color scheme of  tractor unit with lowboy seen in set 3935 from 2000.

Comparison: besides colors, the most significant variations are some stickers, dummy signal light vs flashing light bar on top and lack of tools, caution triangle and elastic strings in new set, although it includes a nice wheel loader.

So far, I have reviewed   13 tractor units   (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/your_set_list.pl?setlist=3141%0D%0A3613%0D%0A3935%0D%0A5026%0D%0A5467%0D%0A4447%0D%0A5091%0D%0A3817%0D%0A4068%0D%0A6437%0D%0A4323%0D%0A9314%0D%0A9370) in this thread. I will pause here until Playmobil releases new units of this kind or if I can ever get   Mega Construction Set 4084 (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/your_set_list.pl?setlist=4084)   which I'm missing.
